- GoKings, on 07/16/2009, -1/+81Jesus 400k+ for McCain and 435k for Baucus? Nobody should be allowed to receive that much money from special interest groups. Notice that both Republicans and Democrats are receiving a ton of money. All corrupt bastards if you ask me.
- BlacklabelSAR, on 07/16/2009, -1/+62oh yeah, our system of government isn't broken at all.........
- steelersfan7roe, on 07/16/2009, -1/+48This is why our country is broke.
The people's voices are not being heard. Our politicians have dollar signs in their eyes. - LPfmAAF, on 07/16/2009, -3/+39Why is this not illegal?
- Lucas123, on 07/15/2009, -3/+31You had me at "2007 Average Senator Salary $174,000". New Hampshire legislators work part time, yet somehow our U.S. senators can't seem to make ends meet making almost $200,000 a year.
- GhostInAShell, on 07/16/2009, -3/+29So Max Baucus is getting $435,000 and is one of the major pushers of healthcare reform and the public option?

Does anyone realize that we are probably about to be swindled somehow in the most brutal of manners? - Ragarnok, on 07/15/2009, -3/+28Man Jhon McCain sure made a lot from those HMOs maybe he could fund universal healthcare?
- Lane, on 07/16/2009, -0/+20Let's use our thinking caps shall we?
*ahem*
All in favor of outlawing the obscene amounts of money, free vacations, kick backs, and various other material and immaterial goods awarded because of the influence we have earned by sitting in these seats say I!
Awaits crickets..... - fury420, on 07/16/2009, -0/+14don't forget their amazing healthcare benefits & pension
- Atario, on 07/17/2009, -0/+13This would be much more useful as properly-formatted HTML, with searchable text and everything.
- fooljoe, on 07/16/2009, -0/+12is this really news to anyone here?
- MelvinSchlubman, on 07/16/2009, -0/+12Because it's hard to write a law that's precise enuf to outlaw* this, yet doesn't violate rights of speech?
* And which isn't worked around. - GhostInAShell, on 07/16/2009, -0/+10Yeah, don't ignore Baucus either.
- fooljoe, on 07/16/2009, -0/+10even if it were made illegal the bribes would find a way to corrupt pols*. anyone who wants to put a stop to this needs to realize the law can't do it, only voters can. stop being fooled by the two-party system, stop putting incumbents back in office, and reserve your vote for a true *representative* who will sign an affidavit that he will be bound in his important actions by an online vote of his constituents or some other such device. if no such person exists then run yourself.
*remember these values are just what is declared - don't believe for a second that this graphic shows anything close to all the money or other favors used to buy these senators. and don't believe that a senator's hands are clean just because he has a 0 here. - Jordan117, on 07/16/2009, -1/+10FiveThirtyEight had an interesting look at this too, going so far as to predict how many (and which) votes are being swayed from what they would have been by insurance industry lobbying alone.
http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2009/06/special-int ... - jezsik, on 07/15/2009, -2/+10Another fascinating info-graphic from Good magazine!
- radialturkey, on 07/17/2009, -0/+8aye*
- tgc1, on 07/17/2009, -0/+7They are. People who argue partisan issues are missing the whole ***** picture. It's right there in front of us if we care to see it. They're all corrupt.
- Waiting2awake, on 07/16/2009, -1/+7Just to play devils advocate;
Why should the peoples voices be heard? They clearly don't give a ***** or else there would have been marches, and riots and protests.... but none of that happened. The only reasonable conclusion is that the American people are quite happy being stolen from and having the wealth of the future taken from them them and their kids, just as long as they themselves don't have to get off the sofa aqnd put themselves in risk. - socialweapons, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6The straight talk express must be carpeted with lobbyist money.
- Aroundtown27, on 07/16/2009, -1/+7From that article it doesn't appear that he is for the public option at all. What he is mainly pushing for is insuring everyone in the country. This would drive so much money to the private companies with getting the 46 million uninsured insured. Now if you get 46 million people covered which previously weren't the private companies will make a killing.
There is a large difference between what he is/was (article from Nov 2008) pushing for and the public option. - acknotSW, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6That they get for life.
- ghatid, on 07/17/2009, -1/+6It's interesting that we (Digg) focus on special interest groups like this which are run by larger companies. There are a lot of special interest groups that we don't complain about. For example, all of this clean energy, solar powered stuff is being supported by special interest groups. The gov't saves baby seals because of special interest groups, not because the stuffy representatives actual feel anything towards animals. These companies profit hugely whenever the gov't decides to make things "greener" etc, but no one seems to complain about that.
- appleofdischord, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5THESE ARE MY THINKING CAPS
- hasslinthehoff, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4So much for democracy.
- KibblesnBitts, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4Yeah Lautenberg - make New Jersey Proud....Yeah Menen.....nevermind
- ChiaGod, on 07/17/2009, -1/+5An excellent point, though I may have to explain why it's different. In most of those environmental lobby situations, even though they may be supported by companies that make their living through selling green solutions, most have benefits that the taxpayer can appreciate and benefit from.
In the case of the HMOs and Pharmaceutical lobbies, they try to get legislation passed that benefits them and only them with little or no benefit to the taxpayer.
Cases in point, when legislation was passed a few years ago that prohibited Medicare from negotiating drug prices and the legislation that prohibited American's from purchasing drugs in Canada.
Those two pieces of legilation had 0 value for us taxpayers (and really ended up costing us money in the form of more expensive drugs) and were only enacted to ensure profits for the pharmaceutical companies. - geekee, on 07/17/2009, -1/+5They have their own lobbies. You think they want students to know about what goes on?
- viol999, on 07/17/2009, -1/+4What have I learned? Democrats can be bought cheaper than Republicans.
- PhantomRogue, on 07/17/2009, -1/+4Ohhh, I get it. So long as you agree with the Lobbyists, its OK to buy a senators vote. Gotcha.
I don't give a rats ass about what the "cause" of a lobbyist is. The Senator/Representative should vote based on what the people he represents want, not what the highest bidder wants. He represents the people living in his district, so should his vote reflect that. - inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3"Oh, I’ll play your game, you rogue."
- praisethelard, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3The fact that it's an info-graphic (aka "image") is retarded. The information would be served much better as a web page. edit: Nevermind, I see it's made for a book. I suck.
That said, the information itself is fascinating. - dball48, on 07/16/2009, -5/+8Too bad most public school teachers would never use something so relevant, practical and important in their curriculum.
- fooljoe, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3pols as in politicians
- natpatben, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3::sigh::
- STPZ, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2Last law reforming contributions was McCain Feingold...**references infograph**...aww *****
- radialturkey, on 07/17/2009, -2/+4enough*
- Leminnes, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2That is quite unnerving. I'm sure there's more her we don't know, though.
- dirtymerkin, on 07/17/2009, -2/+4Our government sucks.
- fooljoe, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2good point. as much as money has influence in today's policy, the ultimate power still lies with the voters, so the problem is that too many are just lazy or stupid. perhaps the best alternative would be a wikipedia-style model, where all have access, but only those who care contribute.
- datatribe, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2I'd like to see also how many of those senators are trial lawyers and how many malpractice suits have been brought against doctors participating in the same HMOs had malpractice suits brough against them by trial lawyers. Then, we should also include the cost to insure a Dr. against such suits, the increase in charges to patients by Dr.s paying higher MP insurance, and the increase in cost of patients who patronize these Dr.s and HMOs.
If you're going to play the "follow the money" game - follow it all the way. - EskNerd, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2Way to go, Herb Kohl! I love Wisconsin's two senators. The richest man in the senate (Kohl) needs no funding and is thus relatively incorruptible. And the poorest man in the senate (Feingold) actually aims to serve his constituency because he knows their will alone got him elected--he could not, and still cannot, afford an expensive campaign.
- jjb123, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2Wooo! My Senator, Carl Levin, took $0!
- Ashes42, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2You think he's dumb enough to bite the money hand?
- bshock, on 07/17/2009, -1/+3Once again I'm ashamed that "Lying John" McCain is my senator.
- ZenMojo, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2What do you mean "all corrupt bastards?" 15% of Senators don't take any money from the insurance companies.

Arizona can go ***** itself, and McCain has always been a corrupt little bastard, but look at Oklahoma. - mparker21311, on 07/17/2009, -1/+2Hate America? Me too, that's why I continue to vote for both parties.
- Elranzer, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1"Infographic" = auto-bury.
Also, it's not a word.
Also, don't circumvent the Images section just to get your submission viewed by Diggers who only view the News section. - Elranzer, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Stop using the word "Infographic."
Also, pics go in the Images section. - inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1The Ol' Mav hey?
