- otheruser, on 10/10/2007, -1/+54This is just half the story.
"Despite Bush’s repeated statements that the report will reflect evaluations by Petraeus and Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, administration officials said IT WOULD ACTUALLY BE WRITTEN BY THE WHITE HOUSE, with inputs from officials throughout the government. And though Petraeus and Crocker will present their recommendations on Capitol Hill, legislation passed by Congress leaves it to the president to decide how to interpret the report’s data."

The only way to get Petraeus to talk will be to have him sit in front of a Congressional committee, under oath - but like the story says, Bush doesn't want that... - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+27Can't let him testify, he might tell the truth.....
Don't have to worry about that with Gonzo! - rumorsofdemise, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21how long is going to take for the public to get fed up?
- xoxuxox, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21Congress: Do you feel we are making progress in Iraq, Gen. Petraeus?
Petraeus: I don't recall or have any recollections to that effect. - Jmuduke, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18How do people not see through this bullcrap? I mean honestly, do they think we're stupid?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20That is because the White House, GW, Cheney, et al, don't give a flying ***** about our troops. They truly hate our troops. They cut funding for the VA, They are fighting tooth and nail to make sure PTDS does not get covered by insurence. The highest rate of suicides since Vietnam, and Bush does not care about our troops! What spineless scum!
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -2/+16Bush: "We listen to the generals on the ground."
Well, what the *****, man? - TruthforAll, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Yes they do... and unfortunately, unless we actually do something, we are proving them right.
- Randinn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11When it's too late....

The Whitehouse is writing this report because the Congress requires it to do so. - bremstrong, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8The less anyone thinks about what's going on in Iraq the better, from this administration's view, lest the electorate be reminded of the $4000 / taxpayer cost of the war, the casualties that increase from year to year instead of decrease, and the tremendous cost to the Iraqi citizens.
And for what? There was no reason for this war. Iraq had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks, was not a base for anti-American terrorists, and had no biological or nuclear weapons.
Just an expensive disaster, disaster, disaster..... - CronoTrigger, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8It must be going really well if he doesn't even think that we need to hear from the general. Obviously. Take that Loony left defeatists!!!!
- GorfTron, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8This war is apparently none of our ***** business.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8F U C K Y O U!
Hey do you have an RSS reader? If you do sign up for reports from an insider in Iraq.
http://www.iraqslogger.com/index.php
After you get done spending a good 3 to 5 hours catching up, come back and I will talk to you. - Kinkistyle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4From the very same report, Page 27 Line 10:
(3) TESTIMONY BEFORE CONGRESS.—Prior to the submission of the President’s second report on September 15, 2007, and at a time to be agreed upon by the leadership of the Congress and the Administration, the United States Ambassador to Iraq and the Commander, Multi-National Forces Iraq will be made available to testify in open and closed sessions before the relevant committees of the Congress. - Dweller99, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6If you cant answer that question on your own then its hopeless to even attempt to open your eyes to why this is a problem.
How about this. You explain to us why it's NOT a problem that the White House is writing the report and that the General in charge wont be delivering the report? I would love to hear your rational that makes this a good thing. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3What?
- kimb00, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3What does "winning" the war in Iraq mean, anyway?
(honestly. I'd really like to know) - Dweller99, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Why does it matter that the White house will be authoring the report and will not let the General in charge deliver it?
Wow, your ability to defend this administration truly knows no bounds. - relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -1/+4ITS THE WASHINGTON POST! JESUS CHRIST!
I love how people see the wax seal on the story and get an instant gag reflex. - sibhod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3They have. Remember 2006? This is a republic, so citizen influence barely extends beyond elections.
- Novagenesis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah, but what if the Washington Post claims Bush is shooting lazers (sic) from his eyes?
- gropo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The Germans have a word for what p0s3r just did right there:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolchstosslegende - qazyhoods, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8I am absolutely sick of this administration. At least now I can tell my grandchildren that a lived through the worst presidency in United States History.
- simplynix, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Anyone in front of the public has to be pro-administration and trained in the ways of double-speak, spin, and obfuscation. I guess these guys don't fit the bill.
- epicstruggle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's going to boil down to something like this:
--Surge is going welll
----Many examples where AQI has been removed and locals have switched from being on AQI's side to working with Coalition Forces.
----Number of attacks has been reduced, drastically in many areas, not so much in others, but a general lower number of attacks.
----Some talk of Iranin/Saudi/Syrian influences in insurgent activies.
--Reconstruction
----Going on, but it only takes one attack to set back any progress. Not much that can be done, but too keep doing it.
--Political situation in Iraq
----Sad to say, but almost nothing has been accomplished in many key areas. Extreme set back.
----Locals are depending more and more on themselves and not expecting the Iraqi government to step in as fast.
--Iraqi Forces/Police
----Much progress. They are going to be taking over some areas, but many units still have troops that are more loyal to outside forces than their government.
--Troop Pullback/Redeployment
----We will certainly see some redeployment out of the north, and maybe some from the An Albar province so that the Iraqi troops can take over security of those areas.
----Limited information on what future moves will be made. (no need to telegraph your game plan to AQI)
----May be some discussion on british withdrawl from the south.
Overall:
--Surge going very well
--Political gains almost nonexistent
Everyone will have something to get out of the report to make their talking point. - HaywoodGiablomi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/15/AR2007081501281_pf.html
Just follow the links, OK numbnuts? - pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2we listen to the generals who repeat what we tell them to say.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3from: http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=110_cong_bills&docid=f:h2206eah.txt.pdf#page=22
This is the bill that defines the report and it's requirements. Now check out this next, most amazing quote:
"(B) The President, having consulted with the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Defense, the Commander, Multi-National Forces-Iraq, the United States Ambassador to Iraq, and the Commander of U.S. Central Command, will prepare the report and submit the report to Congress."
Page 26, Lines 9-14.
So if the President DOES NOT prepare the report, he's violating the requirements laid out in the bill. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Hey dumb ***** how does this qualify as a question "It's not like you morons would believe him if he says anything even remotely positive."
You also said "What does it matter?" That is a rhetorical question. It's not a true question.
Hey kid, why do you hate our soldiers? - evilbob333, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2For some reason I have a hard time believe that if Bush testified before congress, that anyone would believe him. Even if it just consisted of reading verbatim, a report written by General Petraeus while hooked up to a lie detector that would shock hsi genitals every time he told a lie.
- geekee, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Digg readers certainly don't. They've made up their mind before the "surge", not to mention this report.
- diggbot7, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That is the view from here (Canada).
- gcauthon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You don't think we're stupid?
- Homerr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2How is the White House going to claim Executive Privilege on this one?
...wait, they'll find a reasoning however flawed. - NotAChickenHawk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4That's funny. You, without doubt, would believe him no matter how obvious or far fetched his lies are. Every tiny bit of good news is spun completely out of proportion, and every bit of bad news is never mentioned. More to the point, Bush has, through this entire ordeal, shown himself to be as completely incompetent at solving Iraq's problems as he is at solving America's problems. The Iraq Study Group told him that a diplomatic and political, and not military solution, is required. But formulating a diplomantic and/or political solution requires that the civilian branch of our government become engaged, and that the President become engaged, and so he won't do it for fear of revealing his own ineptness. Instead, he passes the buck to our military, straining it to the breaking point, getting men wounded, maimed, and killed because he's too much of a coward to do his own job. The caskets of fallen American soldiers - no, fallen American heroes, are hidden from the media and from public view, money is cut from troops salaries and from the VA, combat tours are extended, rest periods between combat deployments are reduced - yet this man claims to support the troops. He' lied to us about the reasons for starting the war (WMD), he lied to us about winning the war (Mission accomplished) when it suited his purposes, he's lied to us about the reasons for continuing the war (Al Queda), he lies to us about the current progress of the war (8 of 18 benchmarks have satisfactory progress - only a closer examination reveals that the 8 are the most unimportant ones and calling the progress satisfactory is questionable), he lies to us about whose idea the "surge" is (hint: its not the generals, its a conservative think-tank), he delayed re-evaluating his strategy, pending the Iraqi Study Group report (while men were dying daily), then promplty ignored the report, and now he has lied to us about waiting for Patreus's evaluation of the "surge", which will neither be written by Patreus nor presented to Congress about Patreus. So, us "morons" (the ones who have been paying attention, and not accepting everything at face value simply because he says it, but rather digging deeper and comparing what he says vs. the facts on the ground) will not believe anything that he says, good or bad, because he has destroyed his own credibility, and that of his administration, to the point where the White House looks like the Iraqi Communications Ministry under Sadam, and Bush himself looks like the former Iraqi Communications Minister, aka Bagdad Bob.
- Novagenesis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2All the democrats, huh?
Every ***** democrat in the whole goddamn country?
Wow, that's a lot of people to ignore one man.
But I guess -all- the liberals in the entire world are stupid moronic hypocrites.
And -all- the conservatives in the entire world are religious extremists who value their faith more than their family, friends, and country, and who think they should carry around guns to kill liberals with while they reap in their capitalistic profits.
No wait..wait...the world isn't partisanship. Only you are. - xenuxenuts, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Obviously, the surge is going well.
- Novagenesis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You're such an anti-patriot expat... letting this info out lowers their morale! You have to be 100% behind the president and any war, or you're not supporting our troops.
Support our troops! - twinklyJesus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1surprise! The US military does not want conscripted troops. Too many idiots and ***** wits come with the draft. They remember Viet Nam and the problems at all levels from sub standard pickings. As it is, most of the ***** wits will be left alone, in mom's basement typing truther conspiracy ***** on Digg.
- UrbanOne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"how long is going to take for the public to get fed up?"
The public is fed up. The problem is that (1) the public doesn't know how to act/respond to the maniacal deviancies of the White House and Congress, and (2) Bush knows that he can do anything he wants to do, and could care less what we think, because no one has the guts to stand up to him. Gosh, am I sure glad that impeachment was off the table months ago... We need some suggestions on WHAT to do and HOW to do it. Anyone?... Bueller? - krnldmp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1He'd better get a Lot more specific than that. What the Iraq war has developed into is not for winning. I just hope Petraeus has the stones to stand up for the lower ranks. This is not their fault.
- Timetheos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Like all of this good news: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/08/16/iraq/main3173600.shtml
- CourtesyFlush, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Says the guy who reads Raw Story.
Man, the irony is palpable. - sibhod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I can boil it down simpler:
We're making progress. Another 6 months. - simplynix, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2But am I wrong?
- twinklyJesus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1U r stoopud
- rcook18, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Are you going to contact your representative to demand a public forum for this or are you going to sit on your ass?
- in2deep, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Wouldn't surprise me....the whole thing is corrupt with that maniac in the White House!
