What happens if liberals no longer have a Canada to run to?
onthewriteside.org — Back during the Vietnam war, Canada was the place of choice for draft dodgers and military deserters. Apparently Canada is in no mood for a massive encore.

- finkx, on 07/16/2008, -5/+4brazil is always good. i remember in WWI they used to shoot deserters / those with shell shock. now we have the sense to realise not everyone can commit murder in the name of their country and not suffer psychological damage. well, some of people realise that anyway.
- 03FightOn, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1you remember? uh-huh.....pull the other one, it has bells on....
- onthewriteside, on 07/16/2008, -1/+23Conservatives have never had a place to run to plus we actually like our country.
- gbudavid, on 07/16/2008, -1/+19I thought maybe Mexico, Or Jane Fonda's??
- obamanation, on 07/16/2008, -1/+24Or maybe Cuba? After all, Micheal Moore says the place is GREAT!
- shauncorleone, on 07/16/2008, -1/+17Canada is definitely right in doing this. There are no draft dodgers this time for obvious reasons. Instead, we have people violating an agreement. It's not like I don't have a humanitarian bone in my body, but know what you're signing up for first.
- Rikety, on 07/16/2008, -1/+8Yes, Ike, preferrably he could do it by walking in front of Humvees being sure there is a buffer of at least 100 yards between him and those following.
- alanhlake, on 07/16/2008, -1/+9Guys like him don't enlist because they want to stand up in their country's defense. They enlist because of the perceived benefits. "Gimme the benes not the responsibilities."
- LoneRanger85, on 07/16/2008, -2/+11Would that they DID run to Canada. But like everything else liberals do these days, it's just an empty threat. Liberals "threatened" to leave if Bush were reelected. But they stayed. They know that this is the greatest country in the world. Canada apparently realizes now that their gene pool was irreparably damaged by the losers who ran up there during Vietnam. A little historical note. Al Gore was nearly one of them. He was packing his bags and his mommy was going to go with him, when his segregationist daddy laid down the law and told him his future was dead if he left.
- MoniqueMoniCat, on 07/16/2008, -1/+3you are HILARIOUS and have a great way of stating things! the comment about the "gene pool" was most hilarious.
- LoneRanger85, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Hatred accomplishes nothing. I've found that mocking liberals cuts much deeper. They have such a high opinion of themselves that humor is a much more effective weapon than the bile they spew.

- Indyanna, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5On the subject of Canada, some of you might be interested in checking out Wikipedia re: their current Prime Minister Stephen Harper. He's socially, politically, and economically a conservative. I don't know what, if anything, Harper had to do with this decision to send the deserters back to the US, but I'm sure he's totally in favor of it.
- MoniqueMoniCat, on 07/16/2008, -1/+4Well, I don't suggest it, but there's always HELL. You know, the place they say doesn't exist and the place they brag about going to when they die so they "can meet up with their friends?"
No, but seriously, any pacifist or anti-war person should do the honorable thing AND GO TO JAIL which is the punishment for desertion. As the Italiano mafia says, do the crime, have the balls to do the time. - BigBenKlingon, on 07/16/2008, -1/+2You guys seem to be forgetting one minor detail. There was a ***** DRAFT back then.
You think pinko-libs are joining the Army voluntarily, in DROVES, only to change their mind when they get deployment papers? Yeah, I didn't think so...
So let's take a long hard look at who's deserting, and WHY. But wait, that takes some critical thinking now doesn't it?
Hmmmph...I'm in the wrong thread.- Indyanna, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2"You think pinko-libs are joining the Army voluntarily, in DROVES, only to change their mind when they get deployment papers?"
In droves? I sincerely doubt it. But are there liberals voluntarily joining the military? Yes, of course there are.
Is it primarily liberals who are deserting? Conservatives? Who knows. But it doesn't matter. If you go AWOL, you're in trouble. Case closed.- BigBenKlingon, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1"Is it primarily liberals who are deserting? Conservatives? Who knows. But it doesn't matter. If you go AWOL, you're in trouble. Case closed."
My point exactly. Did you mean to join me in refuting the premise of the article?

- Indyanna, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1BBK - You made a good point, that the overwhelming majority of people enlisting in the military aren't going to be liberals. And therefore, it's highly likely that some/all/whatever of the deserters aren't political liberals.
When reading the article, the main thing I got out of it was that Canada has changed its policy regarding military deserters, at least in the current situation in which the draft is no longer in force. And for that, I'm glad. I think they're doing the right thing.
