Wexler On Impeachment: "This Is Not The Lunatic Fringe"
thinkprogress.org — Today on the Ed Schultz Show, Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL) discussed his effort to increase public pressure for the commencement of impeachment hearings against V.P. Dick Cheney. Wexler has launched a website — WexlerWantsHearings.com — to collect signatures in support of his call. "This Is Not The Lunatic Fringe. This Is Mainstream America."

Sure there are some fringe idiots like yourself that probably think he doing a great job....but I think most of the Americans...most True Americans....not the neo con wing nut phsycopaths like yourself.....really are worried about the direction of this country...
Now I'm sure you already have your NAZI swastika tattooed on your forehead, and are really looking forward to the rest of us joining you......but I think the rest of us are little less inclined to meet you out there on the fringe.....
I'm just going to hope that some of the elected officials begin to understand there will be repercussions for not impeaching two KNOWN criminals and maybe a couple of them might even grow a spine and do something about it.....- LukasSmith, on 12/21/2007, -21/+1repercussions? ahahaha. Democrats will hate Bush forever. But who cares. I dont see Bush or Cheney crying about it. Man I swear those two have real balls. The democrats are just crybabies. Democrats need to stop crying and realize Billary can never win and Obama? ahahha. yeah right. Yup democrats will lose white house again. Not that it matters much. I cant say Billary seems like the holiest candidate ever. She seems to love special interest money from criminals and business alike. And the fact she didnt stab Bills balls indicates she is totally happy to be her husbands first ride as long as he can give her image. Cant wait to find out who our new Republican president will be. Consequences? ahahaha.
- Pherdnut, on 12/21/2007, -0/+20Hahahahaaa 4000 Americans dead, allies alienated, terror a BIGGER problem, civil liberties in ruin! 9 Trillion in debt. Whoooo! And the only guys who have anything to show for this mess is Halliburton, who got plenty of tail in the only way those assholes know how and will have a very nice set of stock options waiting for Dick when he gets out of office. WHoooooooo wheeee! But those boys sure got some balls.
- LukasSmith, on 12/21/2007, -16/+1yes they do 9 trillion debt not caused by Bush alone or just republicans for that matter. Civil liberties secured unless your name is mohammed. 4000 americans were already dead in 911 or did you forget? 4000 soldiers who are paid to fight possibly die. They are called soldiers and not bhuddists for a reason. THe rich get rich the poor get poorer nothing new there. Yes Bush and Cheney have balls and those pusssie democrats know they are owned.

- andrgo, on 12/21/2007, -0/+6Yeah, why are you on Digg wasting your time bashing Democrats instead of fighting in your war?
Bush lied and you know it. I don't hate Republicans, or anyone else for their political affiliation, but when people lie and screw up our country it pisses me off. In 2001 Bush had a clean slate and had the chance to become a good President, now it's practically unanimous amongst Americans, regardless of their party, that he's one of the worst, if not the worst President ever.

Of course, if you actually did the math, your little dream would be crushed mercilessly.

- OffPiste, on 12/21/2007, -20/+5We never impeached FDR and he really did lock up Americans for no crimes (Americans of Japanese ancestry), spied on Americans, authorized the construction of the A-bomb and would have dropped it had he lived a few more months, and supported the firebombing of civilians. Yet somehow current generations don't look at him with disgust. Ohhh I forgot,he was a Democrat. If you're a Democrat you can be the party that supported slavery, segregation, eradication of the native Americans, but you'll get a complete pass.
- JimmySpaza, on 12/21/2007, -19/+1Well said. Bush may suck and be deserving of impeachment, but the hypocrisy on the left is astounding.

Why it it whenever the word hypocrite comes up Spaza shows up?
What's the matter, did your JamesSpaza account get banned for being an ass?
Shouldn't you have enlisted by now, so you can put your money where your mouth is?
Like most of the right wing you must've figured out it's better to be a coward on the couch than a soldier in the Iraq.- JimmySpaza, on 12/21/2007, -4/+1"Yeah, it almost registers when compared to right wing corruption and scandal."
Please, both sides of the aisle have a huge list of scandals and corruption. Let's not get holier than thou, thanks.
"Do we need to post the ridiculously long list of GOP crimes again?"
Why? It's been stated over and over again. I'd just like to see the leftists dump their hypocrisy and post the list of Democratic scandals...and there are tons.
"Or will you right wing asshats at least admit you KNOW about the crimes?"
If you didn't use bad language so much, maybe more people would pay attention to you and respond.
"Why it it whenever the word hypocrite comes up Spaza shows up?"
Just pointing out hypocrisy where it exists...and the leftists seem to be full of it.
"What's the matter, did your JamesSpaza account get banned for being an ass?"
No, for not spewing liberal garbage. It wasn't for trolling because I engaged in discussions with many people. It wasn't for name calling or bad language like YOU use. The Digg moderators never would own up to why they disabled the old account. It must be censorship.
"Shouldn't you have enlisted by now, so you can put your money where your mouth is?"
Already did, son. Probably well before you were even born. Been there, done that. Have you?
"Like most of the right wing you must've figured out it's better to be a coward on the couch than a soldier in the Iraq."
Some day you may learn about courage and have to stand up for something. May it be done away from your dorm room and in the face of danger...just like many of us have done time and time again.
You talk tough. Have you ever been in a hot zone? How about serving in the military ANYWHERE? How about visiting a third-world nation...even if it was on vacation with your parents?
OK...how about this? Ever volunteered at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter? Ever volunteered in a hospital? I have. Have you?
No? Then you're all talk...and a hypocrite for demanding such of others with whom you disagree. Get back with me after you accomplish something and we'll discuss it.

- chicofaraby, on 12/21/2007, -3/+20FDR also was in a real war, not some nonsense about some tiny nation that is somehow a threat using invisible, magic weapons. Get real.
- tsotha, on 12/21/2007, -20/+1This is why we don't take lefties seriously. You realize more people died on 9/11 than died in the Pearl Harbor attack?
- tommymctom, on 12/21/2007, -0/+21and what does 9/11 have to do with the war in iraq?
- chicofaraby, on 12/21/2007, -0/+19That doesn't make Iraq a threat to the USA. Nor does it justify the illegal invasion of Iraq. Nor does it make Al Queso a serious threat to the USA. Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany were real, actual threats to other nations including ours. A few Arab criminals running planes into buildings just isn't. Again, get real.
- Speed, on 12/21/2007, -1/+5It should also be mentioned that FDR wanted to join WWII earlier, but didn't because Congress said no until Pearl Harbor, and FDR didn't want to violate the constitution.

- chicofaraby, on 12/21/2007, -1/+15Yes, I am saying that ***** that happened 65 years ago is probably not germane to the crimes that George Bush has committed in office. I'm saying that bringing up crap from 65 years ago only makes you guys look more foolish than usual. I'm saying get real.
- tsotha, on 12/21/2007, -20/+1This is why we don't take lefties seriously. You realize more people died on 9/11 than died in the Pearl Harbor attack?
- UrbanOne, on 12/21/2007, -0/+21"We never impeached FDR..." Exactly. Which is why we need to impeach Cheney and then Bush. So, in the future, people don't say, "We never impeached Cheney and Bush..." We need to set the standard. This is not about living in the past, it's about living for the future. If we don't protect our Constitution today, we won't have it tomorrow.
This is not a time to pretend there are more pressing or important issues. Bush & Cheney's oath of office demands that they "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic". The President and Vice President have not fulfilled their oath of office. They must be removed from office, as should any other official who does not fulfill their oath. We do not have the right to NOT seek impeachment. If we decide to not act, especially in a case that so clearly demands action, we are setting a precedent to allow future elected officials to continue to degrade their office and subvert the Constitution, the very same Constitution that they have sworn to support and defend.- fluoro, on 12/21/2007, -0/+9"We need to set the standard. This is not about living in the past, it's about living for the future. If we don't protect our Constitution today, we won't have it tomorrow."
This is well-said. While OffPiste's comments were correct, he seemed to be using them in such a way as to argue, "Well, we didn't impeach FDR and Bush is doing the same kind of things FDR did, so we shouldn't impeach Bush either." All kinds of violations of the Constitution have been going on since WW2, including every single "war" that has happened since then. Rather than say it's okay for Bush to do what he's doing since he's doing what has been done by presidents before him, we should impeach him now in an effort to keep future presidents from doing it again. Also, in addition to that we should respond to people like OffPiste by saying we're not the same citizens who were around during FDR's time, so the mistakes of that generation don't bind us to continue making the same mistakes again.
- fluoro, on 12/21/2007, -0/+9"We need to set the standard. This is not about living in the past, it's about living for the future. If we don't protect our Constitution today, we won't have it tomorrow."
- userperson, on 12/21/2007, -6/+2You forgot Social Security, which will allows the old to steal from the young, and may eventually collapse the whole thing.
You're also forgetting the depression which in large part could've been avoided and the lead up to WWII which the U.S. involvement could've been avoid, or at the very least the attack could have been avoided if not had damages mitigated.
FDR was a fascist. Not a fan of Democrats per se (or Republicans), but that's a bit low even for their ilk.
- JimmySpaza, on 12/21/2007, -19/+1Well said. Bush may suck and be deserving of impeachment, but the hypocrisy on the left is astounding.
- darkciti2, on 12/21/2007, -0/+12My family just buried a time capsule that will be unveiled in 75 years. I had to write a letter to future generations to include in it. I wrote a description about America as it exists today and a description about the freedoms that we enjoy today and the things that our Founding Fathers dedicated their lives to.
It was a long letter and I ended it by saying that I would not let them down and that I will dedicate my life to preserving the civil liberties that we enjoy - that we do not have to show "national papers" (aka ID cards); etc.
I won't be alive in 75 years, but my promise to them will...- joepaterno, on 12/21/2007, -5/+0When my family buried a time capsule when I was a kid, I stuck CDs, action figures, and baseball cards in it. - cambob76, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2And the rest of the world dude. The rest of the world will find it easier to forgive America if these criminals are brought to justice.
- BlacklabelSAR, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3Future generations will only learn the truth if We the People win our country back. Otherwise, future generations will only be able to read the propaganda of revisionist history.
Just like we are taught that Lincoln was one of the greatest presidents and freed the slaves, when actually he used the Federal Government to usurp the power of the states, and therefore the people.

- OffPiste, on 12/21/2007, -15/+7I still don't get what this will truly accomplish other than having another "blowjob impeachment." The Republicans didn't have the votes to convict Clinton so all we got were a few years of the House wasting time. Now the parties have switched power so the same thing will happen, impeachment but no conviction. Can't Congress do something real? Do they really think the Republicans will vote to convict? The Demms just don;t have the votes in the Senate.
- userperson, on 12/21/2007, -2/+2Shh! maybe this will take up time/energy they won't have to piss away money!
- fluoro, on 12/21/2007, -0/+8OffPiste, you're probably right. But why give up just because we assume it's going to fail before it begins? The point here is that we believe the Administration has done something criminally wrong here. It's not a blowjob with a fat chick this time. It's countless deaths. It's countless amounts of taxpayer money being wasted. It's the obvious lying and deception that's been going on. Torture. Refusal to admit that torture is torture. It's making us all not proud to be Americans.
I think if we don't try to force our congress to impeach, we're doing ourselves and our children a huge disservice. If you just say, "Oh they'll be out of office soon and it'll all be over" then you're a ***** blind idiot. The ***** they're doing isn't new. And this won't be the last time some US administration tries to do this ***** if we take the position of letting them get away with it. And that's what is really important about trying to impeach. Punishing them for criminal behavior is of almost negligible importance compared to the duty of trying to stop future administrations (either Democrat or Republican) from doing the same type of stuff. - mightydavefish, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1Uhhh, Clinton didn't commit any crimes. Adultery is hardly a worth impeachment.
Why is it the right wing can't see the difference between getting a blowjob and lying to America, spying on them, starting wars in two countries, and murdering a million innocent people while plunging the nation into debt and recession?
It seems to be a fundamental failing of the right.- pcghost, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2Not exactly. He was actually impeached for lying to a grand jury that he shouldn't have had to face in the first place. Right wing wing-nuts like to forget that last part, to keep up their illusion of reality and their hate of Slick William I.
- theclar, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2The difference between the two is that they tried to find something on Clinton and there wasn't much there but once this impeachment gets going they will find out all the ways this administration has broken the law
- mk1288, on 12/21/2007, -18/+6No, bad idea politically. It will hurt the Dems in 2008 just like the Clinton impeachment hearings cost republicans a lot of seats a decade before. They'll never get the votes and will be portayed as lunies bu MSM
- tsotha, on 12/21/2007, -8/+3As a conservative, I would love to see it. The Dems have already managed to go a whole year without doing a single thing, and it wouldn't break my heart if they made it two, especially right before an election.

Nice try, though; and very typical of a Republican liar and cheat.
You are what's wrong with this country, and we're going to clean you out in 2008.
Democrat across the board in 2008 - it's better than the past 7 years of Republicans (across the board: White House, Congress, etc)- tsotha, on 12/21/2007, -3/+1Seven years of Republicans? Typical of a Democrat liar and cheat. I don't know if you've been keeping up on current events, pal, but the Democrats control congress. The reason they can't get anything done is they aren't trying to get anything done - there are lots of issues they could work with the Republicans on, but they don't want to.
They're trying to ride Bush's low polls to victory in 2008, running yet another candidate who stands for nothing but "I'm not Bush". And fools like you let them get away with it. Maybe someday your party will stand for something, but that day isn't today.
It took the Republicans twelve years to get too comfortable with power. After promising to have the most ethical congress in history, they Democrats have managed to put the most corrupt of their number in positions of power. Wake up and smell the coffee, pal, you're gonna lose the house, and the presidency in 2008.- mightydavefish, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2Yeah rightard, the Dems just can't get it done, even with the cooperation of the GOP.
C'mon *****, be honest.
They can't get anything done because the GOP BLOCKS everything they can, and you KNOW it.

- bluesnowmonkey, on 12/21/2007, -4/+20There a LOT of people in DC who have committed a LOT of crimes. I have this nagging feeling that even if we managed to impeach and convict both Bush and Cheney, it would be this titanic, and the nation would be so exhausted from the effort that we would get tired of hearing about all the other corruption left behind.
If you're upset about the war in Iraq, don't lay all the blame on Bush. Congress can get us out any time they want. They always could. They don't want to.

That's why we went from having a Republican majority Congress to a Democrat majority Congress. The problem is that they're deliberately not doing what we voted them into office to do.
So here's the real question: if you kick out the entire Congress for not doing what you want, and then you get a new Congress that still doesn't do what you want.. then what next? There's clearly something really b0rked in the system when you can't ***** FIND anyone who can run for office and will actually do what the people want.- darkciti2, on 12/21/2007, -2/+6The Republicans know that they've lost the White House. They are trying to save face by preventing a majority of Democrats in the Congress.
They know that a Democratic/Progressive President and a Democratic Congress will crucify BushCheneyCo and their pro-Oil corruption.
They are trying to trick the American people into removing the Democrats that can't do anything because the Republican President Veto's everything, so they can take a few seats in the Congress.
The bottom line is that Republicans are trying to trick people into thinking that the newly elected Congress isn't doing anything, knowing full well that they CANT do anything because Republican George Bush is preventing them from doing anything.
It's a typical (and shameless) Republican tactic.
The bottom line is that Republicans have been in control of the President and the Congress for the past 7 years and our country has gone to *****.
The only solution is a completely Democratic government in 2008 for at least 2 years. In 2010, we can evaluate the Congress and if they are not doing their job, we can vote in a new party.

- darkciti2, on 12/21/2007, -1/+2It's not the new Democratic Congress, Republican Bush is veto'ing everything that Congress wants to do. He's a Lame Duck President and when he's out of Office, he'll be tried as a war criminal - but only if we can keep a Democratic Congress and White House.
The Republicans are trying to gain more seats in the Congress by shifting attention to "the do-nothing Congress".
They know they are going to lose the White House, so they are focusing on trying to take some of the Democratic seats in the Congress... Why? So they can avoid being INDICTED.
Republicans have owned the Congress AND the White House for the past 7 years. It's time to TAKE THE POWER BACK !- wramos, on 12/23/2007, -0/+1Yes comrade lets take power back

Quite frankly, I don't give a damn if 'mainstream America' is laughing at us; all that matters is that we're trying to shake things up and fix the mess Bush & his administration have gotten us in, unlike anyone who finds that amusing due to being egregiously uninformed and/or too complacent for their own good.
'Mainstream America' has already shown us that they're more concerned with Paris Hilton and Oprah's dogs than the well-being of the US. And that means any laughing directed toward us 'fringe Liberals' by them doesn't quite phase me. The mainstream media is the present-day empathy box.

- comand, on 12/21/2007, -2/+6This is the most common argument I hear against impeachment. In my opinion, it doesn't hold much water. Impeachment in this case is not about making problems go away, it's about meting out punishment for crimes committed while in office. If it takes a long time, that doesn't matter -- the country will be getting along with things in 2008 anyway. Applying your argument to the issue means that it's acceptable to let officials get away with even worse crimes, as it would be obvious to them that the public won't demand justice, because it "takes too long" and "won't solve the immediate problem."
- fluoro, on 12/21/2007, -1/+4"Look I dislike the president too, but I'm not going to pretend that impeaching him will instantly make all our problems go away."
Nobody is expecting all our problems to go away. We just feel like it's time to set that dangerous precedent of upholding the law and the Constitution. We realize it hasn't been done in a few decades. But that doesn't mean it should just never be done.
This isn't about making problems go away. It's about trying to prevent them from happening again by setting a precedent that people will be held accountable for their actions. - roystgnr, on 12/21/2007, -0/+643% of Americans (according to polls, not "projecting") is not a majority, but it is not a lunatic fringe, either.
I suspect if the latest poll questions hadn't been limited to the false dilemma "Cheney should not be impeached" vs "Cheney should be impeached and removed from office", support for impeachment would have been even higher. The country is polarized, but hopefully not so badly that there aren't people willing to say "Cheney should be impeached, and then either removed from office or not depending on the results of the impeachment investigations".- Dibou, on 12/21/2007, -2/+1"43% of Americans (according to polls, not "projecting") is not a majority, but it is not a lunatic fringe, either."

It would do no good and would be a waste of time.

AMY GOODMAN: Why stop short of hearings on impeachment?
"REP. JOHN CONYERS: Well, because, unless we’re going to impeach the Vice President and the President within this space of time, I think we could be very seriously compromising the greatest important—most important thing, in addition to documenting any misdeeds that may have happened, whether we continue to have Bush enablers continue to shatter and tear the Constitution to shreds. And so, all of this, academically, is great. I’ve got a number of books from my friends about which articles would be best and which ones we should go after more. But it seems to me that the time element and also the feasibility of whether or not there is any possible chance of success—there is a very stark reality that with the corporatization of the media, we could end up with turning people who should be documented in history as making many profound errors and violating the Constitution from villains into victims. And those are the kinds of considerations that have entered my mind in thinking about this process, Amy."
Stop worrying about your own asses Democrats. I don't care if you are worried that impeachment proceedings might scare a few swing voters away from you in 2008. - ZenMojo, on 12/21/2007, -5/+8The Right is so comfortable creating war out of whole-cloth vapor that they have driven the Left down with battle fatigue. At this point the Left is gunshy in the face of any potential conflict, and there is where the Right will gain the upper hand.
This is all based on a simple perversion of logic that the Right has managed. Every loss the Right suffers is a win for the underdog, for the common man. But the greatest success the Right managed was collapsing religious hegemony into both military might and racial/cultural homogeneity. This means, no matter how hard the Right cracks the whip on its constituency, the constituency feels unified with their slave masters and feels that obeisance to your own is better than solidarity with "the other."
This means, unfortunately, if the Left overpowers the Right, the layman on the Right will see it not as a triumph OVER power but the triumph of SPECIAL INTEREST power. This is, surely, a retarded conception of how power is grown and where it is fortified. The truth is, the Right is the power of money, greed, and tribalism, the Left is the power of tolerant populism and civil rights. There is room for some on the Right and room for all on the Left but the Right will convince you that to be on the Left is to lower yourself to the mongrels, the parasites, and the heathens.
This creates a problem. The Right can be as corrupt, petulant, and perverse as it wants and nothing happens within its ranks. People it abuses will openly CHEER them, and if they cannot cheer them directly they will sneer and equate them to the Left or say, "At least they're not the Left." The Left can only truly win by appeasing the Right, and in doing so they are guaranteed to lose as the Right demands more and more and more concessions.
It's a funny little irony.
It all comes down to tribalism for the Right. Do you want to be one of "them" or one of "us?" If you are one of "them" then you can no longer be one of "us," so no matter how poorly we treat you and how harshly we destroy your government, your health, and your welfare, at least we won't treat you as badly as we treat the others.- Deeh, on 12/21/2007, -3/+4Right against left, left against right...is this all just some sick twisted puppet-show?

As if this is mutually exclusive to the right. We are on the doorstep of 2008, and in 2008 there will be a presidential election - why would people want to push through all the rigors of impeachment at this point in time? It makes little sense in all honestly, about as meaningless as the Clinton proceedings. - ralph12c41, on 12/21/2007, -3/+4Buried....inaccurate ....sorry to break the news to you....this is beyond the lunatic fringe..have a nice day...
- udahlen, on 12/21/2007, -0/+7During Watergate, America showed what a great democracy it was. Even the President wasn't above the law. What has happened to America now? The President lies and routinely ignores the law, and (almost) nobody cares? Is one horrible terrorist attack all it takes to bring down democracy?
- Delphium226, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3Looks like the neocons did bin Ladens job for him.
- GhostyBoy, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1They hate our freedoms so we got rid of them right quick!
- easyfnmoney, on 12/21/2007, -3/+3Impeach Cheney? What a novel idea! It's only about 7 years too late... erm
- Barbarino, on 12/21/2007, -4/+3Um, yes it's the fringe.. Bush has 12 months left, impeachment is just plain silly and the mainstream people in this country do not want to see it. But here on far left digg, it's another story..
- Pherdnut, on 12/21/2007, -0/+0I used to feel that way but they finally hit critical mass on my tolerance for BS. Future politicians need to know that you can't take it this far and get away with it.
- Delphium226, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2If members of the government break the law. They should be brought to account. The application of the law is supposed to be absolute and not a matter of having to generate enough publicity so that pressure is put on people to do something. They should already be doing their jobs, with or without public pressure. If someone robs a bank, you don't go around getting signatures or taking out ads in the paper to get the sheriff to act on the crime. The fact that popularity determines if you get away with a crime or not is a sad reflection on the state of the nation. If we let this slide, then we have lowered our standards and things will slide further into chaos.
Those who support this slide into chaos, who applaud and take joy in the unwillingness of those who should be doing something to do something are traitors to this nation. They are putting party above nation and that is not what a patriot does. That is the path to tyranny. - valkyrie123, on 12/21/2007, -1/+7Clinton got a BJ and impeachment was happening. Dubya and Co. has killed over a million innocent people, destroyed two countries, destroyed the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, hell he’s done everything but rape and kill babies on the White house lawn, and impeachment is considered “the Lunatic fringe”. WTF is it going to take?
- nimbleprune, on 12/26/2007, -0/+1since when have Most liberals cared about the Constitution accept when it serves their political agenda?
- GreatSunJester, on 12/21/2007, -3/+2Yes is it the Lunatic Fringe -- only they believe that:
1. Bush will be impeached
2. It will matter (Clinton proved it does not)
All they will do is posture every once in a while, stir up attention for themselves as politicians who care and ultimately let Bush leave office normally. Most politicians can be counted on for one thing only when it comes to judging other politicians..... they will not do anything that can be used against their own.- Dibou, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2I'm for the impeachment though because it would guarantee Democrats won't win the White House.
- GreatSunJester, on 12/21/2007, -0/+0Interesting thought -- why? that would put Cheney in as president. He could legitimately win 8 years afterwards (not that there is chance one he COULD win). So we are left with the same old, tired field of potential candidates. All can think is once Bush is out of office, the "I hate bush" glee club would be spent and have nothing else to live for.
- Pherdnut, on 12/21/2007, -0/+0The impeachment is for Cheney. After that they may just censure Dubya and let him leave office in disgrace with his puppet strings cut.

- bshock, on 12/21/2007, -1/+4Mainstream America wants impeachment.
Lunatic Fringe wants... well, let's just say it involves sharp instruments and pikes. -
