- alpharaptor, on 08/01/2008, -2/+18so, wal-mart with a unionized workforce will unfairly have to treat it's employees like human? OUTRAGEOUS! and having their massive profits slightly diminished would force them to make more financially responsible decisions regarding moving product (to store and on shelf) and market saturation in turn creating a more stable business model with steady profit... the horror.
- Suneet67, on 08/01/2008, -2/+15Damn it must suck for Wal-Mart with prospects of having to treat its employees like actual human beings through providing them with health insurance and workers rights. How socialist of Obama
- wjreynolds, on 08/01/2008, -0/+10Yet another reason to vote Democratic this fall. As if I needed another reason...
- peticsu, on 08/01/2008, -0/+10wal-mart is pretty pathetic, they will close their store if they even suspect the workers are trying to unionize
- Jauladeoro, on 08/27/2008, -1/+8Man, yet another reason to add to the never ending list of why I need to stop shopping there. I want to boycott but we need to get by on the money we have, (which is not much). I hate that so much.
- theutopian, on 08/01/2008, -0/+7Wal-mart should not be the only business quaking in their boots.
Corporate America is going to be put under a microscope come Janurary 20th. With good reason. - ctkatz, on 08/01/2008, -1/+7the only reason i shop at walmart these days is because i got a $100 gift card from my parents from them last christmas. i still have over half of that left on the card this year.
this is not the reason why don't shop there, but it further enforces why i think its a good idea not to. never thought i'd say this, but walmart is bad for communities. not because they often price out the local shops, but because of their business practices such as this, their unequal pay opportunities, and their exploiting the medicare system so that my tax dollars instead of going to public projects that matter went to walmart employees because walmart won't give them a decent health insurance package. and remember that story of walmart suing one of their employees with brain damage to get their insurance money back? absolutely horrifically disgusting.
thank god that i have a meijer that is either a little farther away or a little closer and maybe a little more expensive, but at least they aren't as disgusting about their business practices that i know of. there is still time. - flossdaily, on 08/01/2008, -1/+6Unions are the only thing that can fix the US economy.
The greatest trick the rich ever played on the poor was convincing us that unions were bad. - flossdaily, on 08/01/2008, -1/+5Unions are the reason we have weekends, and 40 hour work weeks, and lunch and bathroom breaks, and sick days, and child labor laws, and a minimum wage, and workers comp., and fire escapes, and workplace safety standards.
You need to read a history book. - algaeturd, on 08/02/2008, -0/+3Half of the reason we're in the very situation we are in now is because of the ways that unions were demonized and chased out of the corporate environment. You fools gave up the ONLY ***** thing that you had that might even the playing field and then you're SHOCKED because you lost all your benefits because you had no organization and no voice in which to fight the billionaire team of their lawyers?
Americans can be fools. I don't care if you think it's a racket; unions were the ONLY thing that gave laborers ANY rights or wages during the coal wars, which is what most labor industries were based on.
Oh, your labor jobs are gone too?
Hmmm...when did that happen? Around the time that you guys decided that unions were a rip off?
Let's see......pay a small wage to organize and gain some power or just completely lose your job altogether and have it shipped to ***** china.
GREAT CHOICE!
That was about as good of a choice as electing Bush twice in a row.
Self-defeating country....it's almost like you're not happy unless you're miserable so you shoot yourselves in the foot to make sure your life will be ***** up to a degree.... - flossdaily, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1Your "fact" is anything but.
The manufacturing base in this country decreased in size because greedy companies that were already making profits decided they could make even more profits if they went overseas to use labor pools that didn't have unions making REASONABLE demands, like a living wage, REASONABLE hours, and safety standards.
And if you think an unskilled worker isn't worth $20 an hour, you really ought to re-examine your values. Why shouldn't a man who mops a floor 40 hours a week- good honest work- why should he get paid enough money to live comfortably? $20 isn't a fortune. Besides, when unskilled labor kids good salaries, the skilled labor wage rises to compensate.
The fact that you think the natural state of things is for unskilled workers to live in poverty shows how much big corporations have brainwashed you. They have you out here arguing against your own best interests. - inactive, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1A little too much ketamine with the frosted flakes this morning, exgop?
- Ymeg, on 08/01/2008, -1/+2Unions have become
- exgop, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1How? , its a fact that the manufacturing base in this country decreased in size due to unrealistic demands by union thugs. Idiots who have only a high school education and NO special training or work in a dangerous job are not worth $20 an hour. FYI Im not talking about plumbers, electricians or pipefitters.
- exgop, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1Communist piece of ***** you are
- Bith8654, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1So we should just let businesses decided how to treat their workers? I guess that makes...I mean it's not like the allure of making more money would convince higher ups that giving their workforce good working condition and benefits aren't necessary. /sarc
Oh and sadly quitting your job doesn't guarantee another job will be available, and the job market is pretty bad right now. You can only choose where you work from what work is available and willing to hire you. - eliot2000, on 08/02/2008, -1/+2I can never understand this mentality of "screw the poor, they had it coming" that people have. Seems like a lot of the commenters here have never had to deal with adversity- never had to live paycheck to paycheck.
I work in a union job where we compete with non-union companies that pay their people less than half what we get. Despite a company full of people making living wages with health benefits, we're still making more profits than any other corporation in our field. It's completely possible to succeed in business without ***** your employees. There was a time in America when it was the norm. Who's going to shop at Wal-Mart once all the good jobs have gone overseas? - pedepy, on 08/01/2008, -1/+1sorry but I gotta agree ... you guys don't have it as bad as we do here up north, where Unions have become just as greedy as the big companies they're "against"...
Yea, it did take that to get better working conditions, but there's a line.. and most unions have crossed it nowadays.
That said, Walmart's conditions aren't up to par with what you said.. - exgop, on 08/02/2008, -1/+1A quick an easy way to ruin a business... Unionize the work force.
- pedepy, on 08/01/2008, -2/+1yea, dems hate our freedom to not unionize!! ...
- fragmanlivith36, on 08/02/2008, -1/+0So does this mean I still have to dress up to go to Wal-Mart?
- Alegoo92, on 08/02/2008, -2/+1People are pathetic. You can choose where you work and you should live with your choice. You can always quit.
- Ymeg, on 08/01/2008, -5/+3Unions have become such *****.
