WH Admits: No Email Backup Tapes From Start of Iraq War
motherjones.com — The White House acknowledged in a court filing last night that it no longer has backup tapes of email from between March 1, 2003 and May 22, 2003, a period that includes the beginning of the Iraq war. How convenient!

- portnoy, on 05/07/2008, -4/+16Hey, it worked for Nixon with his erased audiotapes didn't it? You got to hand it to the Bush administration, they do learn from the best.
- BlacklabelSAR, on 05/07/2008, -3/+8So you are not about obeying the law, it's about "your side" winning? So if your agenda is not about America being a nation of laws, and honest representation of We the People, then what is it? Christian Jihad?

- chicofaraby, on 05/07/2008, -3/+116I guess the questions then becomes; why did the White House knowingly break the law and who will hold them accountable?
I don't expect that either will be answered.- inajeep, on 05/07/2008, -2/+8The CIO Theresa Payton who made the decision will get fired if she isn't already gone.

- sremick, on 05/07/2008, -2/+12Even if they were punished, the punishment for breaking the data-retention laws is on orders of magnitude less-severe than the punishment of what that data contained.
Making sure there were no backup tapes was a calculated risk. - dexter411, on 05/07/2008, -4/+5The Bush administrator was brilliant by carefully calculating a mischievous excuse for an unnecessary and politically-motivated war that convinced most Democrats as well as the [liberal] mainstream media.
and
The Bush administration was dumb enough to simply erase backup tapes rather than editing their contents.
Do you guys really believe this *****?- Memitim, on 05/07/2008, -3/+3I'm not one for conspiracy theories but it is a damned sight easier to erase backups then to scour thousands and thousands of emails for information that you would prefer others didn't see. The one inside tech needed to kill the tapes is a hell of a lot easier to keep quiet than the legion of staffers needed for such an undertaking. Seems like it would be a lot smarter to accept the risk of being caught improperly maintaining backups then to be caught organizing a massive revision effort, regardless of the threat presented by what is actually in the emails.
- dexter411, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2Assumptions made by the conspiracy theory:
- There was important information in those emails
- The administration decided it was worth the risk of obstruction of justice to erase the tapes
- The administration didn't assume people would get suspicious over said tapes going missing
- The administration could have conspired to simply erased offending emails, but decided to include even the routine WH.gov emails, as well, for some unknown reason.
Assumptions made by the official account:
- Tape backups are fallible
It seems ironic that the same crowd that criticizes religions for using Intelligent Design to explain life (i.e. not first starting with observations and then building up to a theory) gladly apply the same flawed logic to anything that floats their political boat.
- dexter411, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2Assumptions made by the conspiracy theory:
- glycolized, on 05/07/2008, -2/+4Anyone that uses the phrase "liberal media" in 2008 is a total jackass. You think the "liberal" media will give any press time to this crap compared to, say, Monica Lewinsky?

- dexter411, on 05/08/2008, -2/+2Well according to TV.com, his show is on for 3 hours a day, every day. 12.5% of the network is radical; another 80% or so is liberal based on the Obama-loving.
- chicofaraby, on 05/08/2008, -2/+3"based on the Obama-loving"
Certainly not based on reality. GE isn't exactly "liberal." - dexter411, on 05/08/2008, -2/+2GE doesn't have to be. Newsweek is. So is MSNBC. So is Joe Scarborough, so is Chris Matthews. Add to that the ridiculous pass these guys give Obama when he comes on their shows (and their slamming of the last Democratic debate while focusing solely on the incendiary questions posed to Obama) and you have Obama girl in a suit.
- chicofaraby, on 05/08/2008, -1/+3Yeah, "liberal media" we've all heard about it.

- biotch, on 05/07/2008, -3/+9Oh right.... so who then was Bush going to nominate that would be willing to enforce accountability?.... If the dems were stubborn about it we just simply wouldnt have an AG and some right wing nutcase would be appointed by default. Its naive to think all the dems had to do was wait for an appointee that would eventually go after Bush.

Wake up, the future is now.- Dumbledorito, on 05/07/2008, -1/+5Oh, it goes far beyond that. This sets a LEGAL precedent. If a president does something and isn't prosecuted, a future president can point to the previous one and claim legal justification.

- 1shawn, on 05/07/2008, -1/+9Bush and Cheney lied too, yet they aren't getting impeached like Bill did because they're covering up the truth. When the truth comes out, they will have a hefty price to pay for all this. Hopefully this will happen soon so impeachment proceedings can begin to get the criminals out of office ASAP.

- kenplaysviola, on 05/07/2008, -1/+4Because our elected officials won't put them up for trial. Too bad us Americans are forgetful and will re-elect these same officials. And here we are, wondering why nothing ever gets changed in this country. I get sick of people always blaming Bush and Cheney. Don't forget that your elected representatives since they are just as responsible for letting Bush and Cheney do what they want to do. So next time you feel mad at Bush and Cheney, don't forget about your elected representatives. They get to hide behind in numbers with the amnesia of Americans. I'm personally voting against my elected officials who haven't done what I wanted rather than just their political party affiliation.

- Memitim, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Hell, we can't keep our people from archiving every byte they receive. We constantly get requests for bigger mailboxes and .pst transfers when deploying PCs.

- maisis00, on 05/07/2008, -2/+12WTF! Every company I have ever worked for requires record retention including backup tapes equal to the last seven years. Who in the hell is running the White House IT department?! I mean WTF! And the statement that their is no adequate method of archiving MS Exchange servers, what a joke! Their real argument revolves around the fact these Exchange archiving solutions don't allow for the exclusion of personal information that might be captured by the archiving system. I say, "too bad, too sad" the White House needs to have a policy just like every company in the world that says; "We own this email system and all content produced by it. If you don't want your corresponded recorded and retained then send your message via another method."
Wow having a separate email address for personal correspondence what a novel concept, I wonder if there is anyone out there who could provide the White house with a free personal email account maybe Yahoo, Microsoft, Google and I am sure their are a couple more out there. As we can all tell the Internet is really hurting for a lack of available personal email accounts.- CedEx, on 05/07/2008, -4/+0Pfft.. government slacke...umm.. I mean government workers...
- lazyfisherman, on 05/07/2008, -1/+4It's shocking just how many public figures and organizations pull this crap. If there's no evidence, nobody can prosecute them for crimes etc. so they hide the evidence and claim they lost it or it never existed in the first place. It's a loophole in the law that is used by so many scumbags and there needs to be a better way to hold people accountable when information that should exist and be easily produced "disappears".

Could you please act like you give a ***** that these guys have screwed your country for probably more than two generation to come. They have not only ***** you, but your kids and probably grandkids as well. They have, are and will continue to make a mockery out of your once great, once respected Nation. As if that isn't bad enough they have, at each step, become more brazen about their lawless behaviour and superiority over the masses.
Those masses, who have claimed that they would defend their nation have chosen - for whatever reason - not to.

- roho76, on 05/07/2008, -3/+2Every one seems to think that there are secret backups somewhere to be found. But I have to ask honestly why would they keep backups of their lies? It's not like they'll need to reference them later. I would think that if there are backups somewhere then they would be in an email server somewhere that they do not know about. I'm no computer guru but I can't imagine that they would keep anything that would be incriminating if they have the opportunity to destroy it.

Guess its time to finally get rid of those and just claim ignorance if they ever decided to really look into it. - gimpbully, on 05/07/2008, -2/+5To assert that there are no backups of mail from any time period during this presidency can be nothing but a pure lie

- chicofaraby, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5Can he recover data from hard drives?
- rodgerse, on 05/07/2008, -4/+4Come on, this "email-gate" thing is just another long running scandal from bush..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bush_White_House_e-ma ...
apprently they simply (conveniently) don't have an adequet email back-ups system for a while now, and reuse old back-up disks, why would you think they have records for a specific time period?.
Oh yeah, not that it matters but this is (one of) the possible laws being broken hear.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_Records_ ... - wynja, on 05/07/2008, -1/+6This is highly illegal constituting a "high crime," in fact. FFS, can we just impeach the ***** now!!!!!!
- Monk22, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2only if you can prove it
- wynja, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1The absence of emails proves that the law has not been followed. Kuurduhh.
- Monk22, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2only if you can prove it
- ssj2119, on 05/07/2008, -2/+4Should of used Gmail...Lots of space
Over 6698.961629 megabytes (and counting) of free storage so you'll never need to delete another message! - usgovterrorists, on 05/07/2008, -1/+4The good news is the terrorists in the Whitehouse know what they are doing is wrong.
The bad news is the American people are sheeple, and completely brainwashed! - stonewaljacksn, on 05/07/2008, -3/+11You know what sucks about being a liberal?...It's that fact that we were completely right all along dating all the way back to the Axis of Evil comments, and now we can't even be openly proud about it because theres a ***** WAR going on that was started by the people who were completely wrong. It was win-win for the wrong guys. We went from being completely right about the war to having to be split up arguing about whether to stay and FINISH THE WAR WE DIDNT WANT or COME HOME N HOPE IRAQ DOESNT FALL APART.
That ***** sucks.- jonr, on 05/07/2008, -3/+5Try being a lefty foreigner (crimson red commie bastard to you people). You can only say "I told you so" so many times before it starts to sound surreal.
- stonewaljacksn, on 05/07/2008, -2/+2try being less presumptuous, arrogant, and pretentious.
- mofw, on 05/07/2008, -2/+1That was all part of their plan sir.
- chicofaraby, on 05/07/2008, -2/+1Hey, I have NO problem with that choice. End it right now. Cut the Pentagon off today. Cut off George Bush's spending in Iraq today. Authorize enough money for a commercial flight for every American in Iraq. Leave the tickets at the Baghdad airport "will call" for ten days only and allow carry on only. Get the ***** out! The US military IS the problem in Iraq.

- dtfinch, on 05/07/2008, -1/+5I still have ***** of spam going back to the year 2000 that I haven't deleted yet.
- Homerr, on 05/07/2008, -1/+8Treasonous.
- hovester, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2Hmm...probably because they think the acronym "IT" stands for International Terrorist. What a bunch of idiots!
- mliving, on 05/07/2008, -2/+11So let me get this straight.
The very same individuals who setup the largest and most pervasive domestic spying operation in American history. An operation that sucked up every email, phone, cell phone conversation made be virtually every US citizen didn't keep copies of their own communications. Hmmm.
Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot...
Wake the ***** up sheeple!- Memitim, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2Pretty much the same way that Diebold, a manufacturer of financial systems that have to keep insanely reliable records, can't manufacture a voting machine that can provide a simple paper trail.
- GettinReal, on 05/07/2008, -3/+4O.k. Americans its time to wake the ***** up. If you think that the democrats are the answer just look at how they essentially rubber stamp everything Bush and his cohorts have done from the Iraq War to his gustapo cabinet positions to the rhetoric on Iran. If you think voting is going to change anything just think back to when the Iraqis voted and got their purple finger and fox news ran this story for months....LOL. The entire world is being run roughshod over. Humans are being trampled by the monstrous machine of globalization and fascism. All the key positions are stacked from the pope to the president of France. Pieces of ***** at every podium. If you really think the Bush has been an o.k. leader ask yourself what has he done for you or your family? Your country? He has made us weaker. He has spearheaded the drive to strip our freedoms under the guise of safety. He has looted our pockets and called it economic growth. He's blown up kids and called it Operation Freedom. They are close to absolute dictatorship but not quite there. In order to really make this happen they will roll out another big disaster of some sort and then promise to save us all. When they go to make this move, then we will make ours. If it doesn't work out then we'll make our second move in Hell.
- kemp34, on 05/07/2008, -1/+9Impeach.
- CryRightardCry, on 05/07/2008, -2/+6LOL
Only the Bush regime and the GOP could be such bald faced LIARS as to suggest that the emails leading up to Iraq are not important. -
