It's a very simple series of questions:
1. Who created the list of attorneys to be fired?
2. Why was it decided to fire these attorneys?
3. What steps were taken to ensure that firing these attorneys would not interfere with ongoing investigations (such as ties to Abramoff or Cunningham, or investigations into voter suppression complaints)?
These should not be difficult questions - out of, what, 200 attorneys, 8 (now 9, it may turn out) were fired. OK - why? So far, all of the reasons given have been either lies or straight ***** (such as "Well, they didn't prosecute enough illegal alien cases", when a month before the attorney in question was praised for their prosecuting of illegal alien cases!).
If the cases were politically motivated (such as firing people who didn't prosecute democrats right before the 2006 elections), then there is a problem. If the cases were criminally motivated (such as firing people who were looking into who else had ties to Randy Cunningham), then there is a problem.
If it's not potically or criminally motivated, then it should be this hard to remember who made the list, why they were fired, and what steps were taken to do so. But just saying "Well, I don't remember, let's move on" certainly doesn't tell me Mr. Gonzales is either competitent enough or ethical enough to keep his job any longer. - diggerydood, on 10/12/2007, -7/+43I hope she gets to question Karl Rove.

Is because he is LYING. He remembers everything he says he has forgotten. But pleading memory loss cannot be contested.
So, yes he looks like an idiot saying he can't remember what amounts to something that happened 4 or 5 months ago, but he will keep his job for not letting the cat out of the bag in regards to the political motivation of letting these attorneys go; in favor of the party that appointmed him attorney general in the first place.
He can't be forced out. Only the president can fire him. And why would he? Do you think it will affect his approval ratings? Congressional oversight is necessary to ensure that the Executive is serving under the terms of the Constitution and upholding the laws passed by Congress, hence these hearings. The DoJ telling Congress "it's none of your business" is not a sufficient answer, this was established in the Supreme Court case McGrain v. Maybe Bush bought him a 2-week binge over at the DC Madame's place and told him to make sure he remembers that he doesn't remember anything.

Either he knew about it and let it go or ordered it, in which case he should be fired for politisizing the justice system (Those attorneys serve me, not the president, I pay their salaries). Or, if he didn't know anything about it (likely story), he should be fired for incompetence as others in this thread have suggested.
The only good thing about this taking so long is that this guy's suffering is prolonged. Getting grilled out one times sucks enough, this guy keeps having to go back for repeats. He's probably one of the most stressed out guys on the planet right now. - stepnw1f, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6@Thuktun,
