- shawnfassett, on 10/12/2007, -8/+95Seriously...can conservatives defend this?
- FlaG8r, on 10/12/2007, -6/+68Now we know why he doesn't remember anything connected to his job: he doesn't think about anything connected to his job.
- InfamousAtheist, on 10/12/2007, -6/+55Depends on your definition of each job.
I think most of the job descriptions have been redefined to something like this:
Candidates must be willing and able to:
1. Assist the President's efforts to rescind the Bill of Rights.
2. Work with corporate and political allies to line said allies' and supporters' pockets at the expense of the average American citizen.
3. Engage in character assassination of political enemies.
4. Create a christian theocracy in the USA.
5. Spread fear among the population to distract attention from crimes committed by the administration and its allies.
6. Under all circumstances, lie to protect administration members no matter how many documented, proven facts disprove those lies.
7. React to a fluid political environment, including constantly emerging scandals, by lying more, as necessary. The republican spin machine is available to employees unable to pull ***** out of their asses when cornered by the press, protesting citizens, or political enemies.
Did I miss anything? They've committed so many crimes, I feel like I left things out. - DangerMouse9, on 10/12/2007, -5/+54If only he could be locked away and denied Habeas Corpus, only to find out that someone else in his position said "oh I really haven't given it a hint of a thought."
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -5/+51Hitler: "Jews? What Jews?"
- acex23, on 10/12/2007, -9/+45that must be nice, you know, the whole "not thinking about habeus corpus" thing.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -5/+41So Gonzales answers with "I don't remember", "I don't recall" or "I hadn't really thought about it". Classic.
- blckng, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40Just think on this for a second. That's a man who's job is to protect you and your fellow Americans from getting shafted by those who want to disregard the Bill of Rights. There he is, admitting that he doesn't give a good god damn about your right to due process.
Is everybody OK with this? - mutatron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+37Donald Rumsfeld: "I hadn't really thought about what to do after we beat the Iraqi army."
Michael Brown: "I hadn't really thought about what to do in the event of an emergency."
Alberto Gonzalez: "I hadn't really thought about habeas corpus."
George Bush: "I hadn't really thought about appointing people who knew how to do their job. In retrospect, that might have been a good idea, but we'll never know now." - understudy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22
They can and will get away with this sort of thing until they are held accountable.
Congress needs to do what is RIGHT and JUST, not what is best for their careers.
_ - BorisT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Digg me down if the video works for you and doesn't work for only me.
- Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22He makes a fine political appointee, doesn't he?
- Apocolypse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Apparently not outrageous enough for the people of said country to hang him on his own words...
- Tsen, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23Easy: They turn the other way and pretend it isn't happening.
We just need to stop letting them get away with ignoring the problems their policies create. - mushoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Why are these ***** smiling all the time? He almost giggled as much as Bush through the whole ***** hearing. Smarmy ***** the lot of them.
- netdawg, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21they just don't think about it... problem solved.
- Lewie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15They're representing their voters . . .
- fantasticFlan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14An idiot can defend anything, that's one of the great advantages of being an idiot and the reason so many of them go into politics.
- danorama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@minox:
we differ in our definition of "character assassination". This is part of the transcript from that site:
--------------------
SHERMAN: The administration has put forward various theories under which anyone, even American citizens, could be arrested without being charged with a crime. One of these is the theory that you could be classified as an enemy combatant. Are there any American citizens being held today, for over a month, who have been denied habeas corpus or access to an attorney?
GONZALES: I don’t believe so, Congressman.
SHERMAN: Wouldn’t it be your duty as Attorney General to make sure that their rights to habeas corpus were honored?
GONZALES: Well, you know, there’s a lot of people in this government and sometimes people do things that they shouldn’t be –
And I’m not suggesting that’s occurring here. But you’re asking me a question I hadn’t really thought about.
---------------------
The idea that the individual in charge of enforcing the rule of law in the United States would not "really think about" the question of whether there's anyone being held without due process for over a month based on HIS OWN WORDS doesn't strike me as "character assassination." But I'm odd that way. - one2gamble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Im not sure there is anyone left in the US government who should rightfully still be in office. No elected official is doing what they have sworn, under oath to do, until that happens we will continue to have morons like Gonzo in high power positions consolidating power for those who appointed them.
When each branch starts colluding with one another the checks and balances fail and the balance of power is removed from the hands of the people. - Wacer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Even if they are reading this, how can they defend him when he's talking like an idiot.
- DiggCens0rs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Video is broke, youtube anyone?
- bardamuclichy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11This guy is a not a conservative. He's just a stooge who needs to be gone. I don't understand why people weren't pissed at this moron three years ago. He wrote up all the legalese for Gitmo when the ***** started! Where were you guys then?
- Sneakernets, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Reagan would have been proud.
- cpthector, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9What part of the exchange:
SHERMAN: Wouldn’t it be your duty as Attorney General to make sure that their rights to habeas corpus were honored?
GONZALES: Well, you know, there’s a lot of people in this government and sometimes people do things that they shouldn’t be –
And I’m not suggesting that’s occurring here. But you’re asking me a question I hadn’t really thought about.
Is not clear to you, is English your first language? Because for real I can't see how you can rationalize it, I get the feeling that if the guy said the sun rose in the west you'd ***** defend him. Irregardless, let's try to go over it again shall we? The AG was asked if he's thought about not denying someone habeas corpus. Are you with me so far? Ok, Gonzales then presumably tries to shift the blame over to someone else and then stops himself, and then in his next sentence says he hasn't thought about about the question previously posited.
What part of that is hard to understand? And how is it possible not to deduce from Gonzales' statements that at the very least he is doing the most incompetent job possible. For *****'s sake he is the Attorney General of the ***** United States, he was appointed to that position to think about these sort of ***** questions. on second thought, he's actually thought about this before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIFqYVAOosM . So now I guess he's committing perjury, the plot ***** thickens. Oh but wait, it's YouTube, the propaganda mill of the left, my bad, never mind...
Seriously, disregarding the appearance that Gonzales is lying through his teeth, the fact that you and many others are so deliberately obtuse is just mind boggling. - wiremonkeymommy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10his response is quite simply indefensible, shockingly so
- jayman187um, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10 What an S.O.B.
- diggometer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8That's their job: to smile like that
- danorama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9good job not actually seeing the video or reading the transcript. but someone you don't like posted the info, so ignore away!
- NikoKun, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12How could our country have come to be run by morons...
- rlbigfish, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"I don't recall if I put Habeas Corpus into consideration. I don't recall if I've ever heard of Habeas Corpus."
- quomen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Err is the video working for anyone else?
- TheTorontonian, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Seriously? Can an idiot defend this? What kind of idiotic response is that?!
Simple "YES" or "NO" answers only please. - davesbrain, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6What exactly does he think about?
- dilberter, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Where ARE the conservatives of Digg?
I know they're swarming around here somewhere. - gdm9000, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Seriously, how can he possibly claim ignorance of Jose Padilla's situation? That's simply *****.
- ichbinladen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Let's throw Speedy Gonzales in some dark dungeon never again to see the light of day. Then in 20 or 30 years ask him what he thinks of the writ of Habeas Corpus. Then smack him around a bit and rip his fungus infested toe nails off, since he thinks torture is pretty cool too.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Most corrupt and incompetent administration EVER!
- Trini2daBone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Oldthinkers unbellyfeel Ingsoc
- DetroitAdam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Forget about left, right, and administrations- ignoring fundamental freedoms is a criminal offense when in "power." We dictate to Them who is in charge. Who cares whether one is a democrat or republican or libertarian or socialist? How about We the People take all the criminal liars to court? You, the American "citizen" can be tortured without trial and without your family even knowing about it! Who wrote those laws and policies that violate the Constitution? That's the debate here. Not whether some administration sanctioned it. Paradigm shift time folks(In our humble opinion that is.)
Peace to you ALL from Detroit - dilberter, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7So you just assume to dismiss anything based on that sweeping statement you made?
I think the right has made the center, the left.
People who question our government and try to keep them in check (like thinkprogress.com) are no longer upholding our rights as citizens, but being fundamentalists, according to you.
To be fair, I don't know you nor your political views, but I don't automatically dismiss things from a website just because I don't agree with the site's agenda.
On a lighter note, I have to commend you on your correct placement of the period inside the quotes on your last comment ("neoconservative.").
It's a rare use of proper punctuation around these here parts. ;)
Cheers. - WallyAnti, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I second that. This is just f**king infuriating. The fact that he walks around as a free man is the biggest insult to the rest of us citizens. He's gotta be a fall guy for Bush. Someone to take the brunt of this criticism on torture. He's just so pathetic.
- MBostonS, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Candyland is looking for a new GA and I think Gonzo's got significant qualifications for the job.
Seriously, this guy must have his head jammed way up between his legs because...there's just no explanation...this is absolutely unacceptable. We're not talking about someone who's the treasurer of their high school class we're talking about the GA for our f***ing country. This administration is a joke and should go down in history as one of the worst EVER, period. - fantasticFlan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Wrong topic, please read past the first 2 words of the headline before commenting.
- DetroitAdam, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4He feels he writes and "upholds" the laws so he's entitled to them for his own benefit. He will come down. That's the least of our problems however. All criminals must be prosecuted and due process awaits!
Peace from Detroit - streak, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Harvard should revoke his J.D. degree. Gonzales is such an embarrassment to this country. What an embarrassment he must be to Harvard.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5i might point out that the guy is not a conservative
also these guys have zilch for approval ratings
there is also evidence both elections bush 'won' were rigged
what makes you think anyone actually defends him (other than bush) - Smoove, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7"I can't vote for someone who... endorses every Government effort to deny a woman's right to carry a child to term or not."
He does no such thing. He consistently says that the entire abortion issue is none of the government's business, either to support OR to ban it.
"His stance on Embryonic stem cells is ridiculous."
His position is that the Constitution never authorized government to fund ANY kind of research. He isn't opposed to stem-cell research in particular; he's in favor of completely separating science and state.
"Don't vote for this ass hat."
Don't worry, I won't vote for you.
--Len. - horatius, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Is that the best you can come up with you moron?
