- mourningdove, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Read the article! In the show descriptions someone mistakenly wrote "morning after pill". The show actually is based around RU-486, the abortion pill.
- EntropyMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15The site shows an update now that says it's RU486, which can act as claimed. It may just be the show's write-up copy that's incorrect.
- sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I have a idea, how about before everyone gets in a fuss about this we actually watch the episode before we pass judgment. Its obvious that the web site that this article appears on has an agenda, although I happen to agree with there agenda I would still prefer to see the show before I start call them names.
- banderbe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15I don't think my wife would like that :(
- wobitnobby, on 10/12/2007, -10/+20Basic fact-checking, c'mon!
Can't miscarry until after implantation, and implantation occurs 8-10 days after sperm meets egg. The morning after pill only works in the first three days, the sooner the better.
The plotline makes no sense! - themarq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Wait a sec, are you implying that a cable TV show about a teenage detective may not be the best source of information related to sexual health?
There go my plans to market a Nancy Drew pregnancy test. - commiecat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Popular Liberal Site To Claim Veronica Mars Writers As Right-Wing Sympathists.
Obviously "Think Progress" has never seen the show. I'm fairly confident that the writers do a significant amount of fact-checking and in the event that an episode contains a glaring error, it's usually done on purpose and debunked later in the episode or series.
Besides which, the show takes place on a college campus. I'd sooner believe a worried girl coming up to Veronica saying that she miscarried because of a "morning-after pill" than one saying, "I miscarried because I was slipped RU-486". I think that the character's ignorance mirrors the general public's.
Since I don't get CW-HD in my area I download the shows and watch them on Wednesdays. Thanks for ruining the episode for me, too! :P - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You do know that television shows often take creative liberties for the sake of entertainment?
- pjkli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What do you think the morning after pill does? Once a sperm meets and egg it's considered conception regardless if it makes it to the uterus. If the fertilized egg gets stuck in the tube is it not still considered a baby?
So I ask.... what is the difference between the abortion pill and the morning after pill? They both kill a concepted baby. Does it really matter what pill they are talking about? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4wobit...you are right...ThinkProgress SHOULD have done some basic fact checking...like perhaps WATCHING THE EPISODE...before making this accusation. They didn't, so they come out lookin bad.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You mean for the lame website ThinkProgress? Yes, it was.
- pjkli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@boyasunder
Wrong. It kills the baby. Regardless if it's 1 minute old or 1 month old. 5 years ago I once called about the morning after pill.(accident with my girlfriend) and they asked "are you OK with partial abortion". At that point I hung up and told my girlfriend I would rather deal with the consequences of my actions than anything that involves the word abortion.
We have now been married for 4 years and have our 1 month old daughter. Glad I made the right decision. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So should movies like Terminator be illegal since they spread misinformation about gun violence? It clearly shows an individual taking a shotgun blast to the chest at close range and then getting back up. Granted that individual is supposed to be an almost immortal android, but couldn't that be seen as being intentionally dishonest for the sake of entertainment about a serious issue such as gun control?
You should realize that works of fiction misrepresent things all the time, and most people are smart enough to realize it.
Of course this is all moot in this case since the episode didn't contain the morning-after pill but RU-486. Some copy editor for the website just goofed up. - DatDamWuf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5goes right along with the right wing claims that the new HPV vaccine will encourage young people to have sex. What kind of parent would deny their daughter a vaccine that could prevent cancer for this reason? A stupid, willful parent that would harm their own child for a twisted belief.
- nacrotek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think most people have a problem with the idea that they are required to get the HPV vaccine.
I draw the line when the government starts making requirements about how people care for their own bodies; it's a slippery slope. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Most PR show descriptions have the intent of boosting ratings :p.
But it's more likely that the description writers made a mistake in equating the two. No different than people who fail to differentiate between "stem cell research" and "embryonic stem cell research".
/ Kinda glad this digg came up though, because I was under the impression that RU486 and Plan B were the same thing. - EntropyMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2True. If a woman in the show takes a small dose of RU486 as emergency contraception and then claims to have a miscarriage, that would make no sense.
RU486, in this small dose, prevents ovulation. No ovulation = no conception and therefore no miscarriage.
But RU486 taken after fertilization/implantation = abortion, or, I guess if it was done without the woman's consent, you could call that a forced miscarriage, at the very least.
Anyway, just watch the show. This is all premature. - NightStryke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Who in the world would try to get accurate medical information from a fictional tv show?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That article is a bit of misinformation, saying that fertilization *will not* take place. Much like the regular pill, Plan B can accidentally allow fertilization, but then have a side effect of preventing implantation.
I had a moral dispute a while back determining if the pill was OK, and decided that it was because its primary goal is to prevent fertilization. Eating junk food, etc can decrease probability of implantation as well; so if I'm against the pill I have to be against junk food as well. Compromise I made was that eating junk food with the intent of making your uterus inhospitable would be morally wrong, but eating junk food because you like it isn't. Same with the pill.
At the time, I was under the impression that Plan B was the same thing as RU486; so now I have to evaluate Plan B as well. Should it fall into the same category as the Pill, because it *might* prevent conception? Or does it fall in the same category as an abortion, because preventing implantation becomes more probable? - BruticusMaximus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Morning after pill or RU486 .. it's all the same. It's causing a fertilized egg to not become a fetus. Don't get me wrong, I'm pro-choice all the way but I don't like the way the right slice and dice this thing. Either pill is no different from the birth control pill. Before people jump on me, the birth control pill works in two ways. #1, it delays ovulation. This is important. Many say it stops ovulation. No egg, no fertilization. It's not true. When the fake pills are taken each month, an egg is produced. This egg can become fertilized. The second way the pill works is to thicken the lining of the uterus. This way a fertilized egg can't implant itself and grow.
My point? I'm wondering how many anti-abortion women out there are on the pill. Because if they are saying that the morning after pill is abortion, then the regular birth control pill is too. - boyasunder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It does when the morning after pill acts to prevent conception, and not implantation.
Read up: http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2006/04/why_the_wingnuts_hate_plan_b.php - JasonQG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Having actually seen the episode, buried as inaccurate.
- boyasunder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@pjkli
Do you even understand the difference between preventing conception (in which case... there is no "baby," because the sperm and the egg never get together) and implantation? If you believe preventing implantation kills a child, fine, I disagree with you, but whatever. But that's not at all what the article I pointed out says.
Preventing conception, which is the point of Plan B, is no different in concept than the pill, a condom, or any other form of birth control. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1buried for being inaccurate.
- phatt-matt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank heaven for ThinkProgress! The CW network is nothing but a shill for the GOP.
- hydrosan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the article is infact incorrect, the show refered to RU486 also known as mifepristone
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mifepristone
if you read the entry, it can be used as emergency contraception in small doses aka "morning after pill" - Leviathan777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are a lot of confused people out there who think that life begins before pregnancy.
- CoolWind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Intentional misinformation about a serious subject like this should be illegal, and should certainly not be condoned in favor of artistic license.
- firefoxman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Duh. Isn't this what it is supposed to do?
- lagrange, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Someone should get pregnant and then sue the producers for child support.
- asimo8, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Anyone else think this is was done for publicity to boost ratings?
- Conwaysb0718, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5That show is still on?
- mammeld, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2It depends how the show uses RU 486. In smaller doses it can be used as the morning after pill and not an "abortion pill"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Warning: Veronica Mars show can also get you engaged.

- banderbe, on 10/12/2007, -18/+7Woo hoo! Wonderful news!
Let Digg's army of hyper-secular storm troopers digg me down!!! - dshPls, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2The only reason to watch it is because the lead actress is a 9, other than that, it sucks.
