- Wesen, on 10/01/2008, -149/+256Gwen Awful is certainly not impartial. Her bias should disqualify her from moderation as well as opinion.
It is interesting to see the paths the participants of Washington Week in Review have taken. Me? I'm not impressed. - jrdorkin, on 10/01/2008, -122/+207Conflict of interest, anyone?
- TexannaTX, on 10/01/2008, -134/+217Have we totally lost our collective mind? This woman can't be the moderator for the upcoming debate. SOMEBODY, please stand up and stop this insanity. Even in a high school debate, this would not be allowed. Oh, wait. Maybe this is high school.
- cheakamustom, on 10/01/2008, -38/+114First, recall that she was chosen by the *bipartisan* committee on debates. And her writing this book is not news. ( See Sept 4 story in WaPo: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/artic ... )
The proof is in the pudding, and if the past 25 years are any guide, Ifill will be scrupulously fair. Move along... - ursinus46, on 10/01/2008, -108/+166She ought to be replaced as debate moderator by someone who can at least pretend to be objective.
- SwampAss, on 10/01/2008, -68/+119i Hear Rove gets the next one.
- algaeturd, on 10/01/2008, -62/+109I weep for this future. I really do. A bunch of uneducated, buck-toothed imbeciles in here breaking it down and hand jobbing one another all over the room.
Here's the bottom line for you bunch of lying hypocrites: You've had 8 years to do something positive with this ***** country. You've failed on every single level. You've left the United States in such a state that I'm not afraid to suggest you've done more damage to this country with your leader than ANY terrorist has ever done. But stupidity is a funny thing...it masks reality, it masks the facts, figures and truth.
We had a great country going into 2000 and now we're on our knees 8 years later. Socially and economically. And you idiots have your eyes glued shut and waving the flag for more of this damage and disaster.
You are disgraces to this country....you've slit the throat of this country for the past 7+ years and you're proud of it. You love the fact that we're barely holding it together and balk at the idea of having a new direction, a new approach and a shift back into the prosperous years YOU all enjoyed during Clinton's years. I'm embarrassed to be an American because of you idiots. Go start and ruin another country. If Palin gets in there, there will BE no country for your kids to inherit. You guys are ***** destroying it systematically.
Go get an education and go get some help. - mdwhite, on 10/01/2008, -81/+117This is absolute crap.
- JenniferInMO, on 10/01/2008, -4/+39Maybe she will ask Palin the tough questions like Katie Couric: "What kinds of newspapers and magazines do you read?"
- rabidrepublican, on 10/01/2008, -20/+54It's on Amazon, dumb ass.
- exgop, on 10/01/2008, -104/+137Unbelieveable - I'm 56 years old. I've been enganged in the political process for my whole life. This election is the most egregious abdication of the last thread of credibility, professionalism or objectivity of the national media I have ever witnessed.
Why the hell am I taxed to support NPR. This is an obscenity. - aminbean, on 10/01/2008, -14/+46Chill out folks. Sure, it sound weird on the surface, but...
1. The book is about other black folks too. Maybe even a Republican or two.
2. If Ifill is unfair during the debate, we'll all see it and a lot of people will view Palin as a victim, resulting in "proof" that the media is biased, and ultimately more votes. Palin's not being sent into a private cage match. Use those critical thinking skills yours.
Some of you folks just sound silly. - Jagdhund, on 10/01/2008, -2/+33When did Powell and Rice declare their support for Obama? I want a link.
- dvrchatter, on 10/01/2008, -25/+55If she gets to question Palin, Rove should get to question Biden.
- justinforeman, on 05/02/2009, -21/+50Called the number, what a shocker, the mailbox is full! They'll get an earful tomorrow.
- fixin, on 10/01/2008, -23/+52. Hold on, are you wingnuts serious? I mean I know this is an article from the ultra right-wing tabloid WorldNetDaily which is famous for making up smears about Democrats out of whole cloth, so it's not surprising that the segment of the population that makes its way to this Digg page would be especially immune to facts or reason. But let's just take a look at the actual article shall we?
First off, I already mentioned that it's written by the totally discredited non-news organization WorldNetDaily, which lost a libel suit brought by a Gore fundraiser because the court found that WND had made up false allegations about him with no substantiation whatsoever.
Second, the article is currently the blaring main headline on Drudge, and presumably will be all day Wednesday, in an effort to steer the media cycle into covering this non-issue. Evidently NRO already has an article up, so unsurprisingly, the right-wing echo chamber is hard at work following its marching orders.
(It hardly needs to be mentioned that Drudge's headline, evidently seeing into the future, predicts that Ifill's book will go on sale "on inauguration day," even though the linked article does not say that. The headline also implies by its use of quotes that Ifill's book is titled "Age of Obama," which of course it is not, but that's just standard Drudge manipulation that I guess we should all be used to.)
So on to the actual article. Evidently, Gwen Ifill, a well-known and respected journalist whom both campaigns agreed to have moderate the VP debate, is coming out with a book about black politicians next year. That is factually accurate. What conclusion does WorldNetDaily ask that we draw from this? Well, that she is completely in the tank for Obama and should be disqualified from hosting the debate (the format of which has of course already been eviscerated by pressure from the McCain campaign to make it as easy as possible for Palin to avoid embarassing herself).
How do we make the leap from a journalist writing a book, as many journalists are wont to do, to her inevitably rigging the debate in some unknown way to undermine the Republicans?
Evidence: She enforced the 30 second time limit on an answer from Cheney in the 2004 debate in a completely unremarkable way.
Evidence: "Some people said" she looked "dismissive" or displayed "disgust" after Palin's convention speech.
Evidence: Amazon.com review praises her work as "incisive" and "detailed." Uh, not sure where that gets us.
OK that's it. Everyone see the logical fallacy in the nonsensical hyperventilating the desperate right-wingers are doing over this drummed up hogwash? Perhaps not, if you can only ever see what you want to see. - netneutrality, on 10/01/2008, -5/+32One does wonder (I'm the paranoid sort) whether it was known by the GOP and ignored, so that afterwards they could get the media to suddenly kick up a storm about it. It might do a lot of damage to Obama's and Biden's campaign if people perceived them to have had an unfair advantage.
But I hope for the sake of all parties and for the sake of democracy that this woman is plain and fair in her questioning. - DCMacHead, on 10/01/2008, -14/+41keith olbermann? he filled in for john mccain on letterman ;)

- Himtngal, on 10/01/2008, -115/+139Gwen should not be able to moderate this debate as she is an Obama supporter. Contact the Debate Commision and demand she recuse herself! (202) 872-1020
- geekwithsoul, on 10/01/2008, -4/+27Why the hell am I taxed to support faith-based programs?
Why the hell am I taxed to support an unjust war to secure oil rights for American companies?
Why the hell am I taxed to support abstinence programs that don't work when contraceptives could be made available more cheaply and actually do work?
Why the hell am I taxed to support an administration that tramples my rights, expands its powers beyond the bounds of what anyone things is decent and lies to me about it the whole time?
Why the hell am I taxed to support no-bid contracts to Halliburton?
Why the hell am I taxed to support the presidential campaign of a man, who while once a decent and honorable person, has become the lowest kind of scum-sucking, dishonorable, dishonest, and frankly senile candidate we've seen?
This is an obscenity. - airwalkery2k, on 10/01/2008, -14/+36I'm sure it's their trump card in case Palin embarrassed herself.
"It's bias! Gotcha journalism!" - Glynth, on 10/01/2008, -38/+59"right wing smear site" - AKA, a site that airs the facts your precious Daily Kos and Huffington Post will not.
- cptshamrock, on 10/01/2008, -14/+34maybe read the article and goto some of the links on the page
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1755855/the_breakthr ...
ill save you the "effort" of watching this video, it is an interview with her about her book. - enaychuck, on 10/01/2008, -18/+38Ifill is a bitter clinger herself, except she clings to the flames of racism and Obama, she should not moderate this debate
- netneutrality, on 10/01/2008, -3/+23McCain's response: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYGU-9Sybl4
- existing, on 10/01/2008, -18/+38Point is, Ifill is openly and unabashedly biased and, therefore, has no business whatsoever moderating this debate.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/01/2008, -20/+40The moderator has now been demonstrated to have a financial interest in Obama/Biden winning the election. If Obama doesn't win, then she doesn't have a book deal!
She must immediately recuse herself! - MediaWeasel, on 10/01/2008, -15/+33Wow it's like a pack of rabid dogs being shown a bowl of water.
I would suggest you find out what the book is about first before you go assuming she's "in the tank" for Obama.
So it's about black history in the context of the Civil Rights Movement? Fine. What? Not fine? Oh, so are you saying that it's not allright for women to write about women's history in terms of the Suffragettes, or feminism? Are you saying that it's not allright for survivors of brutal regimes, or of Nazi concentration camps, or of any other struggle, to write about and chart their experience and the lessons learned? Or are they allright but not books about black history in the context of the Civil Rights Movement by Ms Ifill and other black writers?
If so, there are several words that describe blaming America's problems on the black community. One of them is racism. - craigly, on 10/01/2008, -18/+36Umm, hey clown (ButtBuddy)
You can stop copy/pasting this. We saw it the first time and already showed why your thinking isn't sane or close to rational. Your bias has no place in this discussion just as Gwen Ifill has no place in the VP debate. - Chahrlie5, on 10/01/2008, -12/+29Lol okay, and you're at the wise old age of 18?
- AmericanAngle, on 10/01/2008, -74/+90The McCain campaign couldn't challenge this?
- JeffyW, on 10/01/2008, -24/+40Drudge broke it, and he's usually pretty accurate. Even to the point that Al Gore keeps the page up.
- docbells, on 10/01/2008, -7/+23If this were a conflict the other way - GOP biased moderator - this would be on the front page of digg with people screaming. Since its the other way.... Well you know...
- Kbrabant, on 10/01/2008, -5/+21Can we all please remember that BOTH campaigns agreed on the moderators? If the McCain campaign didn't want her they could have vetoed her before we even got here.
Also, there has never been any question of Ms. Ifill's impartiality. Until there is, this is all conjecture and drivel. - flip2trip, on 10/01/2008, -8/+24Ok, so you know how to cut and paste, now go away.
- Clemm, on 10/01/2008, -16/+32So I guess when the patently ignorant Palin screws up, it will be the moderator's fault?
- randf, on 10/01/2008, -9/+24i think you did a great job of explaining your "open-mindedness" with the statement:
'I don't know anything about this woman or this "alleged" book'....but i don't like the messenger so it must be a lie. - Jagdhund, on 10/01/2008, -8/+23You're either reacting emotionally and incorrectly, or are simply a 'dummy' set-up to smear conservatives. In either case I ask you apologize for that post.
- Falldog, on 10/01/2008, -17/+31I'm not sure any of you have bothered to read the article. It says the book is more about blacks in politics than Obama, and even says she's unsure about Obama.
How about you let her run the debate and see what happens. You act like Jim Lehrer doesn't have an political preference. - Rosey1, on 10/01/2008, -89/+103Gwen Ifil detests Republicans and Conservatives with a venom that would wilt a small city. I have seen her sneer when speaking to or about any conservative issue. She can barely keep her composure.
I had read that she will be a moderator. Now, I see she is publishing an anti-conservative book. It's OK to be liberal. It's OK to detest president Bush. It's OK to detest Republicans.
BUT IT NOT OK TO MODERATE ANY OF THE DEBATES BETWEEN THE CANDIDATES IF YOU ARE.
SHE MUST STEP DOWN. UNFORTUNATELY, I COULDN'T FIND A PLACE ON THE DEBATE WEB SITE TO SEND MESSAGES.
sanjosemike - Charlotte_Web, on 10/01/2008, -18/+32Hey clown... Obama is a major focus of her book. Obviously, she will sell a LOT MORE books if Obama wins the election than if Obama loses! The book is even set to go on sale on Inauguration Day; there is an assumption here that Obama will win!
She has a financial interest in Obama winning this campaign and should recuse herself immediately! - tkstock, on 10/01/2008, -5/+18Hey, look everybody, it's a provacateur! Did you join Digg today just to come on here and make Republicans look bad?
- goldenrule4, on 10/01/2008, -12/+25ok i'll buy that, in that case we will make Ann Coulter the moderator for the next presidential debate, after all, her last book was not about mc cain.
- randf, on 10/01/2008, -13/+26doing your best imitation of liberals replying to an issue....insult first, then copy/paste your non-answer as fast as you can....Aunt Nancy, is that you?
- greenwald, on 10/01/2008, -6/+19I'm a Democrat and I agree this is a severe conflict of interest being she stands to gain monetarily if Obama wins election.
In no way do I want there to be some cloud of unfairness over this debate. - DreKor, on 10/01/2008, -3/+16If everybody agreed ahead of time, why is this an issue? It's not like some giant left wing conspiracy just shoehorned her into the position at the last minute. If anything, the GOP agreed in order to create this uproar close to election time.
