- siszam, on 10/10/2007, -8/+48Wars should be financed by private donation and fought only by those who support it. There would no more wars because the majority of warmongers are cheap cowards. They don't mind war because it's other peoples money and other peoples blood.
- SheilaNoya, on 10/10/2007, -3/+27Bush needs him to say that so when he vetoes it he can claim he is just "following the recommendations of our military leaders". It's the same deception he is using by trying to claim that his "surge" is now General Patraeus' plan. Bush always has a way to avoid accountability and responsibility for his bad decisions.
- toddcat, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22Makes much too much sense for the President to endorse it.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22So much for the repugs "supporting" the troops. All they are to them is cannon fodder.
- blackinthmiddle, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19The other day me and my buddy were at a bar. We start talking and sure enough, run into someone on leave from Iraq. Didn't ask him what branch of the military he's in. So I feel him out because you never know how these guys are. Sure enough, "Yeah, I can't believe these New Yorkers. Don't they understand we're fighting for their freedom?"
Here's the bottom line. Being in the military is like any other contract. You read the terms and decide whether or not they're good for you. The people in there that I really feel sorry for are guys that were in ROTC. Let's face it, they did it to get money to get them through college. As Obama said back in '02, I have no problem with war. I have a problem with dumb wars. If American blood must be spilled, it shouldn't be "to liberate the Iraqis" or whatever other dumb reason it becomes next week. - JackBurden, on 10/10/2007, -5/+17Okay, so just exactly what the ***** is it going to take for the members of the military to fully realize just how much they are being punked out by the people running the war?
I know that there are plenty who still fight but are anti-this-stupid-war-in-iraq, but most of them seem like either republican robots or people who have a pathological and overarching suicidal devotion to the chain-of-command concept and just cannot see outside of it under any circumstances whatsoever.
Is the President going to have to be pumping their daughters and kicking their dogs for them to take a real stand against these maniacs? What is it going to take for them to understand that, whatever he says, the President simply does not care if they live or die so long as they do what he wants? Even if that damages the nation and destroys their families.
It's sad really, like reading a newspaper story about a sexually and physically abused kid who still sticks up for his abusive parents. You feel sorry for the kid on many levels. - thefirstenemy, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16No, we shouldn't. I understand what you're going for, but we shouldn't privatize wars. We have something like 150,000 Blackwater mercenaries over there already, and they get payed a lot more than our own troops. The majority of warmongers aren't cheap, mabye cowardly, but certainly not cheap. War for them equals profit for them.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Wow. As a US Marine let me just say this: ***** you.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10oooooo..Internet tough guy!!!
Gimme a smooch sunshine! - fordistumley, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12You're an idiot.
- TopherT, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9So much for support our troops.
- satx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Are you even in the military you chickenhawk little punk? You can talk big but I guarantee if you were doing 15 month rotations in the sand pit with 9 months at home you'd be crying like the little bitch you are.
- CrankyHippo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8You know its going to be an intelligent retort when someone starts their comment with "*****"
- fortyluv, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I can't believe there are still people rah, rahing in support of this Bush fiasco. I guess they are part of the 38% who still believe Saddam was involved in 9/11.
- shadeOgrey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Trying to compare WW II and what we're doing in Iraq in any way whatsoever makes me completely sure that your opinions are based on nothing even close to reality. I'm a veteran of this crap and still work for the government, don't even think about calling me a traitor. I love this country enough to call out the ***** of this administration.
- swrostmore, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Wars should be fought by draft and only for the purpose of repelling an invading army.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Beacuse this miserable military quagmire isn't remotely like WWII.
- gothsquirrel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Sure turn your solders into killing machines. Make them forget how much they want to come home and how much they don't go back to Iraq after spending time here. Makes perfect sense to me from a military standpoint. The point that needs to be gotten across is that are soldiers are people as well. No one should have to put up with the ***** that they are going through for the reasons that they are doing it. I feel sorry for all the misguided solders that have ended up in Iraq. When they get home what have they accomplished? and for what?
- shabumike, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Funded by American taxpayers....
- NidStyles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You know I've been gone for one year already, and I know that when I get back to the US I'll only have six months, as I'm going to a new unit before I get deployed to Afghanistan. The least they could do is let me have some time in the US to remember why I do this job, and to see my family.
- spucky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Please sit down. You are not helping anything.
- ratheunknown, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6This makes me sick!
- spucky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You gotta stop watching Red Dawn. No country can take and hold any other country these days. Just look at Iraq. Hell, just let them try to take Texas. Those crazy gun-loving rednecks are good for something :)
Although I do agree that a mercenary army would be a bad idea. I believe we need to dismantle the whole military-industrial complex and go to state based militias. - MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You scare me.
- thebellmaster1x, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7An open question to everyone who is comparing this to WWII:
Last time I checked, we were not in a war, we were in an illegal and unsanctioned invasion. Can somebody inform me as to when Congress declared war, or am I absolutely correct in thinking that this invasion was almost completely executed by the executive branch? - Brian48216, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8You need to stfu.
Imagine going to work every single day. Non stop. For 400+ days.
And then you get to have two weeks off.
Now imagine never being to see your family and friends during that period. Now imagine being shot at.
There's no point to being at war if you don't even remember what you're fighting for anymore. They're just fighting to stay alive.
So piss off you little armchair 'man'. - satx, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Bush should veto Gates' annoying habit of breathing.
- Monk22, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4not to mention no one likes draft armies. who wants someone who doesnt want to be in the army to begin with watching your back?
- ShelDrake, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8we need more servicemen in Digg.
- Dgen_X, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5dugg down for offensive ignorance
- satx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I have no clue whatsoever as to how your first paragraph was at all relevant to your point.
- Wavicle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5"Shut the ***** up Dem Traitor Congress and let the President run the war. You have no Constitutional authority in the matter."
Let's see... who has the power to declare war? (thumbs through constitution) See, it's the presi... wait a minute... hmmm...
Okay, who has the power to raise taxes and sell bonds to cover the cost of the war? See, it's the guy in the white hou... hey, what's going on here?
Yeah, but what about a treaty. See, right here the executive bra... oh forget it.
Who put all these checks and balances in the constitution? - toddcat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Dude, no need to yell. I think you're in friendly surroundings here.
- kreneskyp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"they signed up to die for the country"
They signed up to PROTECT their country, and yes they might give their life doing so. Either way its a noble sacrifice. What they didn't do was signup to be mistreated and disrespected. Anyone who doesn't supposed time off for troops is not supporting them. - ventralnet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Actually... reading your comment i'm not quite sure what your point was???? or how it relates to this article
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Let me guess, your idea of supporting the troops is a yellow ribbon magnet on your SUV.
- spucky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"Once the troops realize they aren't coming home until they fix things, they will get to work and get 'er done."
So you are saying the troops are lazy and sandbagging the war and if we just punish them a bit maybe they will do the job right?
Why do you hold the military in such low regard?
(My gawd I hope that was sarcasm. It is so hard to distinguish it from real neocons these days.) - atbnet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Why couldn't you have died in Iraq instead of the guys who graduated from my high school? Maybe because you are a ***** to back up anything you say.
- kreneskyp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3in wwii we were greeted as liberators by countries who were invaded.
in iraq we were greeted as invaders cause well... we invaded.
ps. thanks for not supporting your troops - pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3you declared mission accomplished a bit too soon there.
- MarkKezner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3He's exercising his right to free speech, which is as American as apple pie. You, sir, are a hypocrite.
- kreneskyp, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5let me see here:
ending war by defunding = not supporting troops
giving soldiers longer rest period = traitorous
I'm trying to figure out republican "logic" and its just hurting my head - kreneskyp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3my ad hominem meter just exploded
- troye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Sure, do a 1 year deployment in Iraq. Come home to your family for 6 months and go back for another year. Those 6 months at home include training to go back out. This training involves "field-ops" that has field time with it, like out in a MOUT town or something. And the troops cannot see their families. Then the soldiers will be doing that for as long as this nation is in Iraq. The US Marines on the other hand, do 9 months out and 1 year at home. Air Force I don't know. Navy is anchored offshore bombing, launching aircraft, and supplying all branches within reach. People need to see there families and live their lives. The soldiers' and families' lives should not revolve around this war that the rest of America is complacent about.
- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3While the idea is nice the execution is impossible unless you support a system of conscription like they have in some European countries. If you are invaded with no standing army, there is not going to be time to train an army of draftees before you are taken out entirely.
- daldredge, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3It isn't whiny to point out that Christians and others who don't fit the current digg political slant get dugg down at a much higher rate than most others.
BTW - your second paragraph is one big whine. Perhaps you should follow your own advice from the paragraph directly above it. - NidStyles, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Seeing as how I've been a service member for quite some time now, and I've been on Digg longer than you, I should say the same about you. Whiney like prick's are not welcome.
This site used to be only tech, and no politics were involved. Sometimes I wish it were still that way, but then I couldn't get reminded how weak willed, and ignorant some you can be. It's like a reality check coming here to listen to some of you whine. - byrdgang, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I don't mind giving back to the United States for what it has given me, but I sure as hell won't be giving up my life for what I have gotten.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Ladies and Gentlemen, the Republican mentality in a nutshell...and I do mean nut.
- NidStyles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2*****.
