VIDEO: Faced With Facts, McCain Denies His Own Straight Talk
thinkprogress.org — Yesterday, Sen. McCain bragged to CNN about how safe Iraq is. Tday, CNN ’s John Roberts rebutted McCain’s assertions, stating, “I checked with General Petraeus’s people overnight and they said he never goes out in anything less than an up-armored humvee.” McCain then backtracked on his remarks.

- venir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38You know as it stands now, I am getting really tired of watching politicians stick their foot in their mouths saying stupid ***** like this, and then when they get called on it, they simply say "that isn't what I said" and people forgive their lies. What a bunch of asshats.
- SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Looks like he's a flip-flopper. Unless only democrats are flip-floppers.
- rebotfc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26McCain is turning into a national embarressment:/
What's happened to him he used to be reasonable? now just a Bush whipped crazy creationist:/ - ctp2nd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10i think lying is bipartisan

“Well, I’m not saying they could go without protection. The President goes around America with protection. So, certainly I didn’t say that.”
Yes, Senator McCain, comparing safety in America to that in Iraq is always a brilliant face-saving strategem. - dishonest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26McCain is a company man, so naturally he spouts the company line.
I am beginning to think that he always was and that the media just was unwilling to call him on it during his "straight talk" days.
But for God's sake keep it up. Every insane utterance just makes a Democratic victory in 2008 just that more probable.- michael532111, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@dishonest
"McCain is a company man, so naturally he spouts the company line."
I think you mistyped the last word. "line" should read "lie" - jobenly, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Actually, McCain isn't very popular in conservative circles. Call him on his BS, but don't act like he's an ultra-Republican or something.

- Hipple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21"I wasn't saying they could go without protection. The president goes around America with protection."
Good point. The awkward pause really helped to drive that point home...- offwithyourtv, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It's probably in the President's best interest to go around America with protection now. I'm sure if he didn't, there would be a few people out there willing to risk a lot to make sure he's...um...out of office.
- antifolkhero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18The GOP - making the special olympics an event for all people.
- Yoseph, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I don't McCain sounded foolish on the last question. It's certainly true that political figures can't walk around in any foreign nations without protection.
- Ryanxv1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3McCain was right on the last question, but everything before that was just him denying what had happened, to make him look like less of a fool.
- CannedMango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4except that he said "you or I" could walk around parts of Baghdad today. Unless he was quoting himself from a conversation he had with GWB, I think he's absolutely full of *****.

Glad to see the media start catching on to the concept of being... er, the media. Or maybe they realize that its in their best interest to start siding with the public (finally). - umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I think most of us are aware that 99.9% of politicians are douche-bags.
- stepnw1f, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Where was this media 6 years ago?

Here here....I used to have so much more respect for him. Hell I might have even voted for him vs. Gore in 2000. A long way from the Straight Talk Express...
I could say the same about Romney. How about McCain/Romney "I'll say whatever I have to say to get elected flip-flop" Express?

- viviwanu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10McCain is a political WHORE!
- agengo02, on 10/12/2007, -10/+0haha come on people. yall obviously dont know how politics work. if you think that you have EVER not been lied to then ive got some ocean front property to sell to ya in arizona. do yall realize how many interviews or press conferences he gives a day? the media has the luxery of scrutinizing every single word that someone says over and over. i cant tell you how many times ive seen liberal media get things wrong, but they just move on. they dont even offer an apology or a "im sorry i was ill informed on the situation." i think mccain is the most honest politician out there today (haha its not saying much but you get my point.) im going to assume that most of yall on here are younger than baby boomers. name one politician that has brought up anything about the horrible wasteful government spending that is drying up our funds. how much do we pay in social security in each paycheck that we wont see a dime of because of wasteful spending. and his comments are meant to rise moral from home about the war. he is supporting the president! if you think we dont need to be in iraq then please turn over your car keys and turn off your electricity. i dont think that terrorism was the main goal for going into iraq, but it needed to be done. everything we use is directly related to us receiving our fossil fuels and refining them. there was an admitted crazy person sitting on the worlds supply of it. good thing we got him out!
any intelligent rebuttals?- marjo9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3what does "yall" mean?
- ArgusSmith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"haha come on people. yall obviously dont know how politics work. if you think that you have EVER not been lied to then ive got some ocean front property to sell to ya in arizona."
Ahh, I see, so the name of the game is "lie your ass off, then deny you ever lied." Interesting coincidence...
"do yall realize how many interviews or press conferences he gives a day? the media has the luxery of scrutinizing every single word that someone says over and over. i cant tell you how many times ive seen liberal media get things wrong, but they just move on. they dont even offer an apology or a "im sorry i was ill informed on the situation.""
And Fox News has such a great reputation for A) getting things right or B) apologizing.

"name one politician that has brought up anything about the horrible wasteful government spending that is drying up our funds. how much do we pay in social security in each paycheck that we wont see a dime of because of wasteful spending."
Wasteful spending like... a giant war in a far off country?:
"if you think we dont need to be in iraq then please turn over your car keys and turn off your electricity."
So... wait a minute, we need to spend less money, but we also need to spend a whole bunch of money fighting in Iraq? Well, if we're spending trillions on foreign affairs, then the only thing left to cut is domestic... let's just cancel schools all together. (Added bonus: increase in number of Republicans)
"i dont think that terrorism was the main goal for going into iraq, but it needed to be done."
Yeah Bush skipped over that whole failed "Weapons of Mass Destruction" thing by switching to terrorism. Good to see you support lies.
"everything we use is directly related to us receiving our fossil fuels and refining them.there was an admitted crazy person sitting on the worlds supply of it. good thing we got him out!"
A) Who admitted it?
B) It's a good thing we loaned money to this "crazy person" during the Iran-Iraq war.
C) Good thing we don't switch to renewable energy sources and cut our 'wasteful spending' from all the middle-eastern countries charging us for oil.
D) Iraq controls ALL oil? Well, then, I guess someone should tell the president we don't need to invade Iran anymore.
- konrad8ha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I never really understood what duchebag meant until I saw this. McCain is so gone...
- ArgusSmith, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1American politics at their best.
- agengo02, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0yall means you all...
- lulzlulzlulz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He's going to get owned on the Daily Show.
- bizchris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's fun to bash McCain and he definitely won't have my vote, but it does seem like he's still sticking to what he's been saying all along. So he's saying Baghdad's no longer purely war zone, it's got some places that are now like Compton or Detroit. Still not Santa Barbara, but at least there might be pockets within it that are decent - but in most cases, much like Compton or Detroit, it's still a good idea to go around in a heavily armored vehicle.
- rebotfc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sadly compton and detroit are like a playground compared to even the best parts of bagdad.
- agengo02, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Ahh, I see, so the name of the game is "lie your ass off, then deny you ever lied." Interesting coincidence..."
thats politics man. the way its always been. name me one candidate that has not done this?
"And Fox News has such a great reputation for A) getting things right or B) apologizing."
fox news is part of the media that i mentioned right? why would i try to defend them?
"Wasteful spending like... a giant war in a far off country?"
no, wasteful spending like $230 million for a bridge to be built in alaska connecting an isolated island with the mainland. wasteful spending like emergency war spending bill that just so happened to include $74 million for peanut storage, $124 million for the shrimp industry and $25 million for spinach producers amoung other things just to get it passed. wouldnt that be the definition of buying votes? unless our troops need to a place to store peanuts. WE ARE AT WAR whether you agree with it or not. wars cost money. the end.
"Yeah Bush skipped over that whole failed "Weapons of Mass Destruction" thing by switching to terrorism. Good to see you support lies."
im not a fan of bush at all. i never claimed to be. but ask ANY military leader the ideal situation is having first strike capabilities.
like i said we were lied badly to about why we are in iraq. some other questions i have are why arent we in afghanistan where osama bin laden is? what happened to "not stopping until we bring him to justice?" like i said im not a bush supporter, but iraq has been inevitible ever since we helped to put a madman into power. if you read the bible then it says that area of the world will always be in turmoil.
reusable fuels is the way to go, but we are no where capable to effectively use them yet.
i do appreciate your thought out responses. i hate debating people and they take the radical "i hate bush approach." - Soldan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2John McCain is trying so hard to make himself stand out.....he should just let rudy take it down... not that rudy is truly a shining example of humanity but at least he is not a drooling fool..
- ichbinladen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Time to put this old dog out to pasture. Goodnight sweet prince.
- tkstock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a Republican, and I don't think this guy will be getting my vote. Why can't anyone just tell it like it is and let it stand on its own merits?
All he had to say is that overall, violence is down in Baghdad, but it's still not safe. The "surge" is working to bring the level of violence down, but we need to give it more time.
Instead, he speaks off-the-cuff about things of which he is apparently unaware, and behold, it gives him and other Republicans a black eye. I think that most politicians (on BOTH sides of the isle) like to hear themselves speak and don't qualify their remarks enough. - agengo02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i agree with you tkstock. this is 2008 john mccain and i wish 2000 mccain would come back! he was just about as straight a shooter as politicians get. im still voting for him because i think he recognized what he has to do to get to a position where he can do some good. i know once hes there he will do the right thing.
- IrishJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1McCain used to have some personal integrity, but once he married himself to the Bush Administration he can't stop lying and faced with those lies he lies to distance himself from them. It's sad how the cancer on the presidency has metastasized to all of the GOP candidates except Congressman Ron Paul.
- Schratboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What a stupid topic. Countless democrat politicians make such remarks and skate.
- tocnwth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 McCain is tries to play both ends against the middle. He has gotten like Bush, he says one thing and then does something different or denies that is what he said or it was not in context.
The more McCain talks the less I like him. I supported him in 2000 until he let Bush walk all over him and not respond with the truth. I would not vote for now if he won the nomination. I do not think he will win the republican nomination, if he does, the republicans are dumber than I think they are.
He tries to appease the moderates and then turns right around kiss up to most ridiculous so called conservatives that only want to dictate to the world how to live, act, eat, and call themselves Christians and do not practice anything close to what the Bible teaches.
I would ask them, how did the people of the first church live? How did they treat all the people who came to accept the gift of God thought Jesus Christ? How did they treat the each other? How did they live? I wonder if any of them ever read of the Samaritan that lay wounded on the road and what did the most religious of that day did?
