- EntropyMan, on 10/10/2007, -20/+81I think we need a new "Godwin's Law" : the closer the Republicans come to losing a major election (or argument, or their car keys), the greater the likelihood of them calling Democrats terrorists and terrorists Democrats.
- felman87, on 10/10/2007, -15/+64If Osama was a democrat, he'd spend his time at clubs, smokin pot and trying to hit up girls. He'd never attack anyone because that money would be better off spent "at home"
If Osama was a republican, he'd spend his time killing/invading people/countries in an attempt to instill his morals/political beliefs on them. He'd talk tough and ask his "military" to sacrifice their lives for him(or his "country") even though he'd never do(or did) the same for them.
One of these descriptions sounds oddly familiar. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+42All of sudden we’re all children again and Bin Laden is the Boogeyman.
- unearth, on 10/10/2007, -3/+40How does Rove's Law sound?
- hawkeye17, on 10/10/2007, -18/+54Bin Laden wants to divide Americans and people on the Right are playing right along with him. These attacks by the Right show just how desperate and devoid of real ideas they are. All of the nuts linking Bin Laden to Democrats are morally repugnant for doing so and have their own agenda's in mind.
- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -11/+47If OBL was a politician, he would be a Republican based on his views on social freedoms (gay marriage, abortion, evolution, anything sex related....)
- Rodman930, on 10/10/2007, -7/+36And the terrorists are the right's greatest asset.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -12/+39The right has been the terrorists' greatest asset.
- fezzen, on 10/10/2007, -3/+28I realize why it's easy and convenient for conservatives to make the Democrat-Osama connection (how they both use the truth to further their arguments rather than vague speculation or outright lies like the neocons), but give me a ***** break. This grade school name-calling needs to end.
Anyone who realistically believes that Democrats are terrorists or want to help them in any way is a mental midget. To say that their ultimate goals are even CLOSE to the same thing is worse than a lie, it's willfull ignorance of the facts. Not to trash that kind of thinking, because hey, it could get you elected president someday.
In the end, the truth doesn't matter. Perception of the truth is everything, and this distinction will be crucial to understanding why politicians are behaving like they are, and why smear campaigns still work in a society of supposedly educated people.
Enlighten yourself, for everyone's sake. - EntropyMan, on 10/10/2007, -13/+38Why do conservatives only understand that _everything_ Bin Laden says is calculated propaganda when it serves them? As soon as he says something that is politically useful to them, they'll claim he's telling the truth, just this once.
- SickMonkey, on 10/10/2007, -5/+27Brooks is a first class asshat and neo-con apologist. Yet the fact that he works for the NY Times shows that even the paper the right likes to attack the most as part of the "liberal media" conspiracy is willing to give a voice to those of differing opinions. Fox News would NEVER hire anyone with a different opinion unless you want to count Colmes, whose only role is to be the nebbish whipping boy for that big meat head Hannity.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -15/+37He couldn't be any worse than the little Hitlers the GOP is dumping on America.
- EntropyMan, on 10/10/2007, -14/+34Yes, indeed. Fascist.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23"If it weren't the truth, you wouldn't be getting knickers all in a bunch, now would you? Time to grow up."
Someone needs a lesson in logic. You said because people are getting their "knickers are all in a bunch that the comments by Brooks must be the truth". First, you haven't shown that an angry response has any connection to a statement being true, but I don't even need to argue that point. All I need to do is show the opposite can be true and your logic fails. Couldn't it be possible for people to be upset and have the Brooks comments be false? I think it is easy to imagine people getting angry when someone says something that they believe that it is blatantly false and tried to pass it off as the truth.
So your logic fails... "bunched knickers" doesn't necessarily equal truthful statement by Brooks, so you have yet to prove that the statements were true. So TruthLady, you may want to work on your logic and do a little growing up yourself. - hawkeye17, on 10/10/2007, -11/+29Bin Laden wants to split American's apart and people like TruthLady are dumb enough to follow right along with that agenda. The Republicans are desperate because they know that Americans don't trust them anymore so they're resorting to outright lies and smears. like this.
- gwhardyiv, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19First, he appears irrational, which is something that we are conditioned to fear in a rational society. Now, we have a "madman" endorsing, and thereby de-legitimizing, political views typically associated with "liberals," the natural enemy of the military-industrial complex. He is portrayed as an evil mastermind, and he cannot be caught. Yet he pops his head up just often enough to keep the electorate in a perpetual state of alarm. He is the perfect enemy of the state. A little too perfect, if you ask me.
- SheilaNoya, on 10/10/2007, -6/+21It's amazing how the 70% of Americans who disagree with how Bush is conducting his war are always referred to as "leftists" now. Who ever suspected that a vast majority of Americans would one day be considered "leftist liberals who hate America and support the terrorists"? Seems to me that the real "dissenters" in America are the idiots who still support Bush and his incompetent way of dealing with terrorism.
- thefirstenemy, on 10/10/2007, -5/+20I'm glad you posted the same sentiment twice in one thread TruthLady! Otherwise, I might not have noticed that Democrats are equal to al Qaeda.
/sarcasm - shabumike, on 10/10/2007, -7/+21Noam Chomsky's left testicle has more geo-political knowledge and awareness than david brooks.
- felman87, on 10/10/2007, -7/+18Refresh my memory, how is Osama like a democrat?
- carpespasm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12i went to the link, the part about "This is not for philosopers and intellectuals" just screams enlightenment. as does the part where you exclude welcome to pretty much anyone who doesn't either already agree with your, or is too confused to know what they agree with at the moment.
- cheesehead, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16How do you know this is not some CIA put up job? Like the others.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Ronald McDonald's left testicle has more geo-political knowledge and awareness than David Brooks
- joebaloney, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Bin Laden wants this war to continue. He knows that will happen if Republicans stay in office. He purposely ties himself to the left to get the American people to vote for the right. Hence the war rages on.
- BobbleBingnut, on 10/10/2007, -9/+19The Bushes and the BinLadens are best friends :)
- fezzen, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Accusing people of whining after you make inflammatory, unsubstantiated claims does not make you the moral superior, nor does it make you more mature.
I'd have to say the opposite of both is true. And you have yet to actually respond to anyone else's comments other than to reiterate your own narrow-minded opinions.
Simply put, we're all better off without your "wisdom." - zeusthemoose, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Neocons don't know what logical reasoning is.
- dukeeeey, on 10/10/2007, -11/+19The Bin Laden videos are military propaganda.
The war on terror is a fraud
911 was an inside job. - BradnPA, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10This retard osama in the middle of nowhere and even he can see our gvernment is under control of corporate business, we have GOT to wake up and get back ownership of our government. Its doing everything for big business and absolutely nothing for us citizens other than legislating crap to hinder and control us, every aspect of our lives. Im fed up. And this Osama turd just puts the icing on the cake.
- happytron, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11How is this 'propaganda'? He's saying something that's fairly obvious from the transcript. Frankly, it's comical that such a character ended up a villain.
- DDRSkata, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12System of government characterized by extreme dictatorship. Seven across.
Oh wait, that's fascism. - ronh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I'm just as much against modern republicans as the next Digg user, but c'mon democrats are not all peace loving, pot smokers. I mean it took a Democrat to begin and escalate the vietnam war, it took what was left of the democrats to give overwhelming power to Bush and co. Honestly democrats and republicans are two sides to the same coin.
- unearth, on 10/10/2007, -11/+18Breaking: Neoconservative apologist develops ability to talk out of his ass--Noam Chomsky is baffled.
- lead2thehead, on 10/15/2007, -10/+17Okay... let's look at Osama's main talking points. We have:
- Corporate Oppression
- Evil Neoconservatives
- Right Wing Controlled Media
- Unjust War in Iraq
- Democrats not doing enough to stop it.
- War Based on Lies
- Another Vietnam
- We Can't Win
- The "Real Terrorists"
- Global Warming
- Evil Christians
If you were to post a comment on digg supporting Osama's position on any one of these points, you'd get +30 diggs and 5 or 6 responses saying things like "Right on, brother! Bush IS a moron!" If you were to post a comment refuting his position, you'd get -30 diggs and and called a fascist. David Brooks may as well have been talking about Digg. - clark24, on 10/10/2007, -9/+16Ignorant right-wingers getting played by Osama AGAIN. How many times will they fall for the same tricks?
- pkonink, on 10/10/2007, -6/+13There is a lot of wacky stuff coming from the left-wing end of the Internet. However, as a reader pointed out, the stuff coming from the right-wing end far eclipses the left in both its ridiculousness and vitriol.
The neoconservatives must compare the left to OBL, because it's all they have left - their ideals are bankrupt and their reign of terror is rapidly coming to an end. Too bad we'll be living with the consequences for decades. - minox, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I know everyone here is upset by the observation, but I thought the rest of the transcript was actually really interesting. Especially this last paragraph:
The one thing that leapt out — and Bruce Hoffman and the others mentioned this — was how Western it is. And a friend of mine, Reuel Gerecht, points out that there’s this argument that Western ideas never permeated into the Arab world, but in fact it’s all — I mean, a lot of the worst ideas from the West have permeated in, and he’s picked up Noam Chomsky, and he’s picked up some of the anti-globalization stuff. And that’s what infuses this. - Sil369, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10No, that's Cheney. His grin creeps me out.
- theodenking, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11He called Noam Chomsky 'childish'? How many revolutionary scientific theories has this guy come up with?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11Anyone polarised into a classic THEM vs US mindset cannot reasonably be called 'sane' - when did it become a sign of idiocy to hold an opinion different from yours? Stop seeing in black and white and start looking for the shades of grey.
- BelXul, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Looks like the propaganda my grandfather saved from the 'Fatherland'. Some things just never change.
- gleongelpi, on 10/15/2007, -2/+7Not true. Lefties have been copying the ideas of religious groups from many centuries back. Bin Laden has been talking like that for more than twenty years, before there was one blog or the internet. The problem here is that you are uneducated, and dumb enough to think that things happen in the order in which you find out about them. How self-centered can anybody get.
- thekaempfer, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10you should get out more
- n8f8, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10When the worm turns and you realize the fallacy of not fighting back militant Islam, I will laugh if the face of your children begging to get into whatever island of peace we have fought to hold.
- talywackerflash, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Never mind Brooks. He's earned his irrelevance. The fact is, the republics need (and want) a terror attack in the worst way. They are frightened by their own shadow and think everyone else should be too. Trolls like truthlady are righteously indignant towards those she deems to not be scared enough, and this is the resultant reaction, since the ineptitude of the right is now on brutal public display. I see FRED stickers cropping up here in middle Tenn. and THAT scares the hell out of me. He hasn't shown a talent for anything other than reading a script. I know that's an improvement over what we have now but im just sayin..........
- Mesmorize, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10Jesus kids, IT'S TRUE! Osama sounds like democrats because he was using lefty geopolitical views! The same way the Aryan Brotherhood sounds like Republicans!
Of course, it is repulsive to say that either side is one in the same! But policy similarities are there nonetheless, its all about degree! Degree is what separates the logical from the extreme!
Anyways, judging by some of the comments here, you guys have no place to talk of moral high ground. - IADTatami, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7I wasn't reminded of Godwin so much as I was of Emmanuel Goldstein, one of the few figures that seemed to tell the truth in 1984, and of course the object of the two minutes' hate.
- thecoolestguy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5You forgot these talking points:
-Democracy is a failed idealogy
-Islam will bring you peace - hmmdar, on 10/15/2007, -3/+7Regardless of this, I still think the latest video is faked, the facial features look nothing alike.
- ButterBuddha, on 10/10/2007, -9/+13TruthLady = Ann Coulter = right-wing whore
