- Isyso, on 10/11/2007, -12/+124Though the substantial support for Mitt Romney, this shows that Ron Paul is having an impact on the GOP!
- Captainhaddock, on 10/11/2007, -12/+98Indeed! There's no blaming this one on an "Internet conspiracy" or Digg spammers. Although the Mormon Romney clearly has huge support at this time, Utah's Republican Party members appear to favour Ron Paul over both Giuliani and McCain — and Paul's the newcomer whose campaign has barely started.

Romney wants to "Double the size of GITMO." He said so in the debates.
In my mind that doesn't make him a "good man." It makes him and Elitist Establishment Shill Fascist. And that's not calling the man names. That's what I think he truly is. - Snarfangel, on 10/11/2007, -5/+63Over 80% voted for Mitt? God, those Romney spammers are annoying.
- EntropyMan, on 10/11/2007, -13/+66@little, I think Colbert had the correct analysys: doubling the size of Gitmo would only give the existing prisoners more room. Romney is therefore pro-terrorist!
Seriously, Romney's comment should prove to anyone that he's a pandering shrill and not to be trusted, no matter how good a business man he is. - capstone22, on 10/11/2007, -20/+59"I'd vote for Ron Paul" - Thomas Jeffersen

In addition, the Olympics which he turned around were in Salt Lake City. I'm sure that helps with the Utah vote. - jeffiek, on 10/11/2007, -17/+53Ron Paul breaks 5% in a poll. To top it off, he beats Giuliani and McCain.
The bury brigade will make sure this never makes the front page. - Tsen, on 10/11/2007, -3/+37The impact is pretty big here. One of the Salt Lake newspapers printed an article about the first GOP debate that said that Ron Paul was more or less a fringe lunatic, and there's been an outpouring of editorials for the month on how Ron's the only REAL Republican running. He's got a lot of support here, especially from the veterans. They recognize that he's strictly in favor of small government and non-intervention, and especially adherence to the constitution.
Good news...the "republican" hell we've endured for eight years might be coming to a close... - garryw, on 10/11/2007, -8/+39Al Sharpton uses Digg now?
- EntropyMan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+32Agreed. This is actually front-page worthy, though many of the comments are inane. Dugg.
- rarson, on 10/11/2007, -2/+32I hope Ron Paul picks up some steam. I hate Bush and all, but I don't think putting a Democrat into office is the answer. And I say this not to sound partisan, but simply because I don't feel any of the Democratic candidates are really what we need right now.
I voted for Kerry, despite his douchebaggery, because I felt he'd make a better president than Bush. I don't know that we'd be any better off with Kerry than Bush, but I do think that just about anyone would've done a better job than Bush. That said, the problem isn't that Bush is a Republican; on the contrary, the problem is Bush and his buddies have strayed so far from the basis of the Republican party that I was actually starting to think I might be a liberal.
I'm a registered Republican. Ever since Clinton's re-election and the ridiculous stink the Republicans made over Clinton's private life, I started feeling like maybe the Republican party didn't fit me anymore. Bush got in office and now the party seems to stand for the exact opposite of my stances (which, ironically enough, is NOT the same as the stances taken by the Democrats). Ron Paul is reinvigorating my belief in what the Republican party can stand for, and reinvigorating my hope for a return to senses. In short, Ron Paul is starting to restore my faith in democracy.
Ironically enough, I think a Republican is what we really do need. I'm not of the belief that, if R is not working, then choose D, or vice versa. What we really need though, is a REAL Republican like Paul, and not some wolf in sheep's clothing masquerading as something they're not. We need an HONEST politician and Paul is really the only Republican candidate that I feel is genuine.
I honestly did not want to write a Ron Paul rant. I'm just shocked at how un-genuine the rest of the candidates appear to be (to me, anyway). - Ulisses, on 10/11/2007, -15/+43I use to bury Ronspam.
I dugg this.
And congratulate you.
The burying will resume as soon as more spam gets submited.
Now please, go get a brain. - SUPERnova007, on 10/11/2007, -7/+35I usually bury Ron Paul hype, but this qualifies as actual news. dugg
- yabooyah, on 10/11/2007, -26/+53BREAKING NEWS: An ABCNNBCOX celebrejournalist is reporting that Ron Paul's 70 votes were actually cast by 7 fringy-spammy-wackaloons with 9 wives each. Substantiating the claim is the text in the previous line.
Who is Ron Paul?
Who is John Galt?
Where the hell am I?
What country is this?
Thanks 4 the straw-thingy. It's actually pretty darned encouraging. - rAid135, on 10/11/2007, -20/+45Mitt Romney!?!??! I'm from MA and he hasn't done ANYTHING for our state
- specsaregood, on 10/23/2007, -2/+26I would think that Ron Paul's firm state's rights positions would go over well in a state such as Utah. Where they have a unique culture (so many mormons). The idea of letting decisions be left up to the state as opposed to the federal government MUST appealing to them.
- littlebylittle, on 10/11/2007, -7/+30Of course we must be wrong about Mitt. I'm sure he vastly smarter than Colin Powell regarding issues of geopolitics.
(Video) Colin Powell: Close Guantanamo Now, Restore Habeas
http://www.digg.com/politics/Video_Colin_Powell_Close_Guantanamo_Now_Restore_Habeas
“This morning on NBC ’s Meet the Press, Gen. Colin Powell strongly condemned the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, calling it “a major problem for America’s perception” and charging, ‘if it was up to me, I would close Guantanamo — not tomorrow, this afternoon.’”

"I'm an ignorant fool who can't see humor when it hits me in the face" - BrandonMills - JustinAiken, on 10/23/2007, -6/+27Hey, I go to BYU here in Utah, and let me tell you - an incredibly sad number of people love Romney and support him for no reason other than he's Mormon...
At least Ron Paul beat Giuliani! Good is triumphing over evil, even if mediocrity has a 80 percent lead over both of them... - michelsonmorley, on 10/23/2007, -5/+25I live in Utah. I am Mormon. Personally, I'll be voting for Ron Paul in the Republican primaries and have been encouraging everyone I talk to to do the same.
I cannot support Romney simply because he wants to double Guantanamo and increase our military; although I believe he would be a thousand times better than our current president! - BackBlast, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21I was a delegate at the convention, this poll was not a scientific poll. The selection process was done last year at the caucus meetings during the delegate selection process. Only delegates were allowed to vote as it was done simultaneously with state party officer elections, which also means there could be no poll spamming (hand counted, verified system with poll watchers). Essentially the group gathered together are rather politically active from across the state of Utah, selected by their precincts to represent them in the party selection process. So, while not a random selection ("scientific") it was probably more representative of the active republican base of Utah than a random poll could otherwise be due to the nature of the voters.
The good showing was effected by the large pro-Ron Paul group there to promote him and provide literature, videos, bumper stickers, buttons, and signs. The group was larger than any other presidential candidate's showing and was well received by many delegates. - barktwiggs, on 10/23/2007, -0/+19There is no Margin of Error for this type of straw poll. This is more like a census of political activists who showed up for the annual meeting.

"Ron Paul Supporters Spam Utah Straw Poll"
:)
The message of liberty is a strong one. It doesn't take a man with a $400 haircut and stage presence, or a man with a huge mansion and an big bank account to rock the political landscape and wake people up.
Ron Paul/Walter Williams 2008 - Iconwolf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19"it is irritating that mitt gets like 99.9% but for you the story here is ron paul."
Obviously Romney is going to have a heavy advantage in Utah. The key here is you'd have to be living under a rock not to know who Giuliani or McCain are (and if you didn't I'd be rather concerned if you were actually voting) but that Paul is still a relative unknown to a lot of people outside of areas of Texas and certain parts of the web. Yet even this early in the campaign he's still able to pull more numbers than the other two. No, it's not earth shaking, but it is certainly newsworthy. - stukast1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Mormons aren't morons, they are generally very nice, moral people.
- zovres, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22Ron Paul is the only candidate with enough balls to tell the truth and not hide behind patriotism.
- barktwiggs, on 10/11/2007, -32/+50The people of Utah are probably more impressed with Romney's executive prowess than his relgious affiliation. Remember, this is the guy who helped fix and turnaround the scandal plagued 2002 olympic organization. After reversing the operating defecit and turning it into one of the more profitable olympics ever, he didn't take any monetary compensation for his efforts. He did it all as a public service, similar to his not taking a salary during his four years as Massachusetts Governor. I think it's his character and capability which are most impressive.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18I think this is a great showing for this early in the election cycle. We have plenty of time to grow.
- 15charmaxwtf, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19From http://www.reason.com/blog/show/120338.html :
Reason: The position of the Student Scholars is that 9/11 was executed by the U.S. government. Do you agree or disagree with that?
Paul: I'd say there's no evidence of that. - hovester, on 10/23/2007, -0/+17I'm not surprised by the results, remember Utah was the only state where Ross Perot got more votes in the 1992 elections then Bill Clinton. Ron Paul got the number of votes he did because preserving the Constitution is very important to most Mormons. They believe that it will "hang by a thread" in the last days.
- bightchee, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18"For all intensive purposes"?
- Grouser, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20One thing these comments show is that there are many of us who are sympathetic to Ron Paul's message, but can't stand the inane remarks of his more fanatical supporters. They are doing more harm than good.
The Utah delegates deserve a lot of respect for their choice. Of course homeboy Romney will be ahead, but their other choices speak volumes, and may influence other state delegations. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -15/+31"Ron Paul is my best pupil" - James Madison
- UtahApocalyse, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18This took a lot of work over the last few weeks. We had many volunteers getting Dr. Paul's message and name out here in Utah. At the convention we had about 30 volunteers that were handing out information to all the delegates that would be voting. I want to [point out that only GOP Delegates could vote in this straw poll and in our group we only had 3 of them. That means that 67 of these votes came from just regular GOP delegates at the convention. We knew Romney would take first (for now) but were thrilled that we were able to put Ron Paul in second place. Our group plans to spend much more time educating everyone about the issues and how Romney is not the right candidate.
- rarson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Not all Mormons are polygamists either.
- OswaldKenobi, on 10/23/2007, -3/+18@kelgann
A person who makes a statement like that is not fit to participate in an intelligent conversation, nor is that person fit to vote for the leader of our country. - JigoroKano, on 10/11/2007, -7/+22I'm sure your religion is based upon sane reasoning and nothing absurd like a magic man that can walk on water and fly.
- barktwiggs, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16*For all intents and purposes
- Terr01, on 10/11/2007, -5/+18I'm a liberal non-RP-campaign-guy, but I support Ron Paul in the sense that he's a good kick in the pants to the other conservative contenders (e.g. Giuliani) in the areas of foreign policy and obeying the constitution.
- thcobbs, on 10/23/2007, -8/+21Utah poll favors the Mormon... NO *****!
- SnowOxx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Here is a great idea, who cares what the candidates religion is, but what the views of that person is. This is suppose to be American, a place that is suppose to have religious freedom, but as soon as you find out someone's religion you change the idea of who that person is. That is really sad.
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17"The only reason Romney is ahead, is because Utah is Mormon country. "
gee, thanks for the heads up :p - barktwiggs, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14In fact, NO Mormons (LDS) are polygamist. If they are, then they're excommunicated. Mormon apostates and splinter groups, that's another story.
- barktwiggs, on 10/11/2007, -8/+20Um...Someone has not taken Stats 101. Not all polls are created equal. Internet and straw polls by their very nature are not scientific and thus you can not accurately infer what the population at large believes based on them.
Scientific polls have randomization in selecting respondants, have a wide rather than narrow sampling frame (internet polls exclude those who don't have internet or don't spend time online), and because you can not select yourself into a scientific poll, it eliminates most vocal minority bias (which is why Ron Paul is only doing well in internet polls).
That being said, Ron Paul has made lots of progress. Most media outlets have omitted his results from the beginning since he never polled above 1%, but now that he is getting at least 1-2% in some national polls, he is making a name for himself. - resta6, on 01/12/2009, -1/+13the % isn't whats important, whats important is that he has the same tier results as the "front runners" which means, he should be treated as a front runner.
- itsme92, on 10/23/2007, -1/+13you do know that out of the GOP frontrunners, Romney is the only one on his first marriage.
I'm a Ron Paul guy, and I don't like Romney for his "double Guantanamo" remark, but you've to give the man credit where credit is due. - YixilTesiphon, on 10/23/2007, -0/+12That's like my grandmother, who will vote for Hillary because Hillary is a woman (supposedly). It's equally retarded.
- JustinAiken, on 10/23/2007, -1/+12Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that "hanging by a thread" bit... one more reason Ron Paul will get this Mormon's vote.
- zovres, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15actually he doesn't... you watch fox news don't you?
