- Velnich, on 11/27/2009, -6/+177It's embarrassing to read this as a Canadian. Apparently the American border crossing authorities aren't the only ones willing to harass foreign journalists.
- Bhima, on 11/27/2009, -3/+129I think at this point someone should work out what it is that the Canadian government is so fearful that Amy Goodman was going to say about the 2010 Olympics and say it publicly.
- spritom, on 11/27/2009, -4/+99So she was detained, questioned, and searched on the basis of things that she might speak about in the future?
Yeah, can't have her walking around. It's a wonder they didn't just gun her down on the spot. /s - sodappop, on 11/28/2009, -0/+89First rule about the 2010 Olympics is We don't talk about the 2010 Olympics.
- novenator, on 11/27/2009, -19/+90slightly OT: Jon Stewart: “[The Olympics] are proof that conservatives hate Obama more than they love America.” http://tr.im/B76x
- 4321234, on 11/27/2009, -4/+71mmmmm.. grilled journalist.
- duke, on 11/28/2009, -2/+64STOP! Whosoever crosses the bridge of death must answer me these questions three, if e'er the other side she see...
WHAT is your name?
WHAT is your quest?
WHAT aspect of the olympic games are you coming over here to speak about?? - ultraJesus, on 11/28/2009, -0/+41As a Canadian who gets most of his news either from digg or from listening to his housemates, I'm pretty sure that the main issues of the olympics are.
1. Its going to cost a *****-ton of money.
2. They are building a bunch of the stuff on what is technically native land (or something like that)
3. The "cleansing" of Vancouver, ie. getting rid of homeless people and such.
All of those topics are pretty fair grounds for criticizing the olympic games, and the second two seem like things the government would want to keep more or less hush hushed. - cfuse, on 11/28/2009, -1/+41Would you want to spend 90 minutes with Glen Beck?
- rcguy69, on 11/28/2009, -7/+44So you're here aboot the Olympics, eh?
- ryanonfire, on 11/28/2009, -1/+38hmmm I really wanna hear what Canadian customs has to say about this.
- zoziw, on 11/28/2009, -2/+35I don't know the specifics of the case, but Amy Goodman was arrested last year at a political convention in the US. My understanding is that the charges would be dropped, but if CBSA found an arrest record in the FBI database that might have been what caused the problem.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amy_goodman#Arrest_at ...
On that note, if you are an American who was arrested for something as minor as shoplifting a chocolate bar back in the 70's, paid a small fine at the police station, was released and never went back to get that record cleared up...you could run into problems at the Canadian border as well. Canadian Border Services Agency has access to the FBI database and can check into these things. US border guards have access to the RCMP database.
Even if you have crossed the border many times in the past without a problem, you could run into a problem now.
Clean up your past before travelling either direction. - MasterOfTheNigh, on 11/28/2009, -4/+33Although your comparison is a tad hyperbolic, Canada has shown in the past that it is willing to block parties from entering the country. Example, the Westboro Baptist Church.
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story/2008/08/08 ...
If the government beleives that you are here just to cause trouble they can and will turn you away.
Note: I don't agree with the ability to limit free speech, but I do understand why certain limits are imposed. - CUGI08, on 11/28/2009, -5/+34What a stupid and irrelevant point.
- Maddoktor2, on 11/27/2009, -13/+40This is no surprise. The US Media is a hotbed of sensationalist yellow journalism.
Sadly, decent journalists will suffer the consequences of this right along with those directly responsible. - BigVi, on 11/28/2009, -4/+28So if she said yes would they have barred her from entering? So Canada is acting like China in regards to free speech?
- redgiemental, on 11/28/2009, -10/+34You are here
The point is way over here.
I think you may have missed it. - Atario, on 11/28/2009, -6/+30Jon Stewart is always on-topic. +1.
- SQLDigger, on 11/28/2009, -1/+23can i get bacon on mine?
- bubba9999, on 11/28/2009, -0/+21You should hear the difference between Boston and Georgia here.
- Canadian007, on 11/28/2009, -2/+22There's no way we'll tell you our secrets! We're just polite, hockey playing, beer drinking neighbours to your North.
- tgc1, on 11/28/2009, -1/+18Man ***** THE OLYMPICS. Who gives a ***** about it anymore? It's become a corporate circle jerk.
Also, I find this ***** disgraceful. What's next is the Canadian government going to start censoring newspapers for talking about unauthorized topics? How about we just go ahead and create the Ministry of Truth and be done with it? WTF is this *****? - jezsik, on 11/28/2009, -4/+21Something tells me that Glen Beck would have crossed the border without a second glance.
- BoneheadFarker, on 11/28/2009, -1/+18Yeah...us Canadians are perfectly capable of insulting the US president. We don't need any help.
- arschgaudi, on 11/28/2009, -5/+22I'm thinking maybe there is something more to this story than being revealed. Like perhaps she was a little less forthcoming with the border agents when first asked he business. In my years of cross-border traveling I've learned that farting around with border agents is not in ones best interest. They'll have you pulled over and waiting for hours just to ask you a simple question and then wave you on your way. Or search your vehicle and then leave you and your belongings strewn about the tarmac while they go back inside for a cup of warm coffee.
- DeadSkinMask, on 11/28/2009, -2/+19We don't talk like that on the West Coast.
The stereotypical Canadian accent is found further East. - Greg2k, on 11/28/2009, -0/+17I thought this was about a US journalist barbecuing at the border. That would make a better story.
- Moz34, on 11/28/2009, -3/+19And I applaud them for that.
They should have been denied entry to the USA as well. - inactive, on 11/28/2009, -2/+17What the hell are you talking about?
- 12345421, on 11/28/2009, -0/+15Seriously? Can you link me to this?
- veritasXE, on 11/28/2009, -2/+16Yeah, but no body cares about Western Canada.
We all known Toronto is the center of the universe. - graemee, on 11/28/2009, -1/+15@Moonrider
Try the going the otherway, as a Canadian we have had these border hassles for years traveling to the US. They are YOUR RULES that we had to agree too to make the border "safe". - ryanonfire, on 11/28/2009, -3/+17It might be that Canada has overzealous laws. They say that anything that "points out errors or defects in the government or constitution of Canada or a province" can be regarded as seditious and thus not let in.
Source: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/dm-md/d9/d ... - Moz34, on 11/28/2009, -0/+14I like the way you illustrated your point :-)
- Speed, on 11/28/2009, -0/+13Slight difference between entering the country to engage in journalism, and entering to engage in what is basically inciting a riot. As far as I'm concerned, if you're planning on picketing the funeral of some kid who was beheaded on a bus (then consumed by his killer), because you don't like his home country's stance on gay marriage, you're not welcome. Especially since there were strangers who showed up at the funeral for the specific purpose to ***** up the Westboro Baptist Church members if they tried anything.
Funny thing, they managed to sneak into Canada, but didn't picket the funeral after they realized what would happen to them. - Moz34, on 11/28/2009, -2/+15Well, there is one certainty now at least: she and a lot of other people WILL be speaking about the Olympics.
Nice going, idiots (and with idiots, I of course mean the ones carrying out and ordering this insane policy, no one else) - DaviDTC, on 11/28/2009, -2/+14eh?
- Shawkab, on 11/28/2009, -0/+12It is like saying people from Seattle sound like people from Jersey..
- GusterBear, on 11/28/2009, -1/+12Headline: "Winter Olympics are cold, and in Canada, which has bears. Vancouver has pot, and lots of it."
- piieerrrree, on 11/28/2009, -0/+11actually, the Stephen Harper, Conservative, back in 2006 or 2007 would only have interviews with journalists if they only asked questions from a pre-approved list. They would be interviewed one at a time in a specific room, and if they strayed off topic they would be kicked out.
Stephen Harper is a ***** douchebag. - habfan29, on 11/28/2009, -0/+11But the RCMP would be happy to Tazer her.
- Speed, on 11/28/2009, -0/+11It was to protect Bernardo's right to a fair trial, not to prevent information. Section 1 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms can only be violated if it is demonstrably justified in a free society.
- onClipEvent, on 11/28/2009, -1/+11you're more than likely to find someone with an asian accent than a canadian accent in vancouver.
- tgc1, on 11/28/2009, -0/+10THAT is why that ***** cockbag should have been kicked out of Parliament last November when him and his ***** cabinet were facing a non-confidence motion from all the other parties. Sonovabitch goes and cries like a baby to the Governor General and we had no government for 2 months.
Seems like people have a short memory about that ***** guy. He's an ass wart. - Travelsonic, on 11/28/2009, -3/+12Sounds like you get it.
/s - SteveMTyler, on 11/28/2009, -0/+9I just hate the way that sponsors and the sponsor's friends and families all get tickets. If you are just a member of the public and want to attend any event it cost a ton and the arena will probably be full of empty sponsor seats.
- jmontes, on 11/28/2009, -1/+10I said nothing until they came for me.
- LilJimmyNordin, on 11/28/2009, -0/+8Ignorance, LOL.
- Atario, on 11/28/2009, -5/+13Wait. You're saying the Canadians are trying to prevent yellow journalism from tarnishing their Olympics?
- fury420, on 11/28/2009, -0/+8while you certainly do not get anywhere near as heavy a "canadian" accent on the west coast, and I've yet to hear a local say "aboot", people still say "Eh?" quite a lot.
