- thecalabrian, on 05/09/2008, -0/+21I agree with the Representative. I took Cialis and no matter how hard I tried, I could not get the football through that damn tire, as the commercial advertised.
- PDAIsAOk, on 05/09/2008, -1/+18Here's a novel idea..... Ban prescription drug commercials! For ***** sake, these companies spend 2.1 times the amount of money on advertising as they do on research. And I wouldn't doubt it if we eat that cost, and get every hypochondriac who watches TV thinking they have restless leg syndrome, BPH, ED, sleeping disorders, etc. etc. etc. Stop trying to sell me drugs, if I want to buy drugs I'll call up a friend. If I want to get healthy because of something I'll goto the doctor, he'll examine me, and prescribe the necessary medicine (and hope to god he doesn't care about perks from drug reps)
- kd420, on 05/09/2008, -0/+14To paraphrase Ron Paul, this country has more of a LEGAL drug problem than an ILLEGAL drug problem.
- mojo31979, on 05/09/2008, -1/+13They shouldn't even be allowed to advertise prescription drugs on TV in the first place. It's practically self-medication, I thought the Doctors were the ones to prescribe drugs, not the pharm companies. This country is such a ***** joke, and kudos to the FDA for approving prescription drugs that kill thousands of people every year, but at least pot is illegal. We all know how many people die from that every year /sarcasm/. Jees, just imagine how much MORE money pharm companies would make if they could sell pot over the counter. Just think of all the wonderful TV ads we'd get to see! "The only way to start off your day, is with purple haze!"
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -1/+13"tell your doctor you need this pill"
"May cause your head to assplode, your wallet to be emptied and your body to become dependent on this drug because getting in shape is just too hard". - inactive, on 05/09/2008, -0/+11One night, to prove my wife wrong, I sat with a stop watch and timed drug commercials vs. the evening news stories during which they were aired. We got a little over 12 minutes of drug BS and 15 minutes of evening news. That's just sad.
- QsheiK, on 05/09/2008, -0/+10Not surprising. Why, if Aspirin would be evaluated by the FDA today, it wouldn't be approved because it has too many benefits. Drugs and pharmaceuticals are big business.
- bemenaker, on 05/09/2008, -0/+10How about, the drug companies STOP advertising to the general public altogether!! They have no business doing so, you aren't supposed to be going to the doctor and asking for a drug. You are supposed to see the doctor for a problem, and it is their decision to choose which drug is right for the combination of you and the disorder.
- delrin500, on 05/09/2008, -0/+7Advertising drugs should be illegal
- MoDinero, on 05/09/2008, -1/+8The U.S. should adopt the law over in Europe where the Big Pharmas aren't even allowed to advertise at all.
- FairDinkumMate, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6Gee you guys really know how to do capitalism -
Big Pharma designs the drugs, conducts their own tests(& of course says 'Yeh, there aren't any important side effects...'), pays off your politicians(for both allowing them to do the testing & to advertise direct to consumers), pays off the doctors, rips off the insurance companies & consumers & then somehow manages to make $100 billion BEFORE everyone finds out that the drugs kill people. Oh, & then they settle a class action lawsuit for $100 million & start on the next drug of choice.
This is capitalism at its best, the market does a great job of looking after itself, what do you need regulation for? - docholoday, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6I don't know if anyone remembers but there used to be a ban on prescription drug commercials. It was lifted just a few years ago and ever since we've been flooded with more drug ads than anything else. Big Pharm lobbied congress to let them advertise prescription only drugs instead of just over the counter and congress caved. Now, all of a sudden, some senator isn't getting his check and they want to re-ban them? Serves them right for bowing down in the first place. Ban them outright again, it's getting ridiculous.
- Jade10145, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6As Greg Giraldo says..
You know we have more prescription drugs now.
Every commercial that comes on TV is a prescription drug ad.
I can't watch TV for four minutes without thinking I have five serious diseases.
Like: "Do you ever wake up tired in the morning?"
Oh my god I have this, write this down. Whatever it is, I have it.
Half the time I don't even know what the commercial is:
people running in fields or flying kites or swimming in the ocean.
I'm like that is the greatest disease ever. How do you get that?
That disease comes with a hot chick and a puppy. - Optimus, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5lol @ rx ads on TV
America! - jankind, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4AND they somehow they convince people they NEED a pill for something and the risks far outweigh the benefits. I guess I'll take this pill for restless leg syndrome. The side effects are anal bleeding, heart attacks, impotence, nausea, head falling off, death... I need that pill!
- allaboutdatiki, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4there go all the profits for the big networks ...
- bigtech64, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3Agreed. The FDA only starting allowing direct to consumer advertising 10 years ago and it has been an utter disaster for doctors and insurance companies.
- redcolumbine, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3It's such a racket. They train patients to clamor for the latest panacea (women demanding Viagra isn't uncommon) and change doctors if their doc doesn't prescribe whatever they demand. It breaks up continuity of care, dings responsible docs with bad patient-satisfaction scores, and stuffs the pockets of pharmacos and lawyers.
- radiantstorm, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3Wow. Accountability in the marketplace. What a concept.
- CookieCutter, on 05/09/2008, -2/+5whats wrong is that young people see these ads... Ads that are telling them that "medicating" themselves is a good thing. Whether they medicate with mom and dads drugs, or drugs off the street might not make a difference to a young mind (pot excluded).
I learned how to roll a joint, snort coke, drop E, shoot heroin, and build a bong ALL in the 5th grade! Thanks D.A.R.E. - mark101, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3In the U.S. , prescriptions have increased over the past decade to 3.4 billion annually, a 61 percent increase. Retail sales of prescription drugs jumped 250 percent from $72 billion to $250 billion, while the average price of prescriptions has more than doubled from $30 to $68.
http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/tables/08s0 ... - unfairunbalance, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3DARE program designed by the government to introduce your children to narcotics that the CIA ship in from their puppet governments of Colombia and Afghanistan. Gary Webb murdered by the Feds for exposing the the government drug shipments into America. The federalized police department mob bosses protect and control this flow of narcotics. Laundered drug money by the the banks that run the Federal Reserve and then illegally extort money from your paychecks ( income tax). To pay the interest from these private banks that your government borrows. Wake America you are being raped!

::sigh:: - phareous, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2I hope they ban them...most drug company commercials are lame and stupid. I love how the majority of them don't even tell you what the drug is supposed to treat.
- jessehadden, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3Patients are not consumers. Health care is not a market. For those who say "let the market dictate everything, everything, everything, the market is god, all hail the market"... I hope you are paying attention. There is more to life than being a consumer, and ignoring that fact is what got us to this point.
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3 Pharmaceuticals do more damage to Societies on an whole than illegal drugs do, according to a U.N.Study. Of course, reality is never addressed in Societies, even though they love 'Science' and live and die by it.
- LoCoPyRo, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Your example is horrible.. as a counter-example cigarette ads used to be on tv but were banned in the early 1970's due to a lack of regulation. Beer ads remain one of the highest regulated ads on tv - they can only show at certain times of the day and channels and are required to say much more than drug commercials do about the dangers and legality of their product. They have to be exlicitly targeted to people over the age of 21 (no cartoon characters or otherwise like the Bee mentioned in the article). They can't even talk about the alcohol content or special effects of their alcohol. There are even indepedent organizations that regulate and discuss the ethics of beer advertising in place. The government also puts on drunk driving and anti-alcohol commericals to combat illegal use and raise awareness.
So yes, the government does blame the alcohol companies for ***** parenting and only don't regulate the ads even more or ban them altogether because of strict self-regulation of the beer companies, which the drug companies have none of. - FairDinkumMate, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Not just Europe - read the article, the ONLY 2 countries on earth where drug companies are allowed to advertise to consumers are the US & New Zealand
- oldgal, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2A few years ago when my son was in high school, he talked to me about friends who were selling their folks prescription drugs at school. He didn't know if this was O.K. or not. Shame on me for not having made it clear that this was not only illegal but extremely dangerous; but shame on society for making prescription drugs look not only harmless but beneficial.
- Myztry, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2tsk.tsk. Someone's lobbyist hasn't been making the proper 'contribution'...
- inactive, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2There is no excuse to allow advertising of prescription drugs. Since it has been allowed prescriptions have increased tenfold. There are now millions of Americans addicted to antidepressants, as well as Oxycontin, vicodin and many other overprescribed drugs
- BelatedHero, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Fail.
- unfairunbalance, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Be advised side affects include vomiting, liver damage, kidney failure, cancer, heart attacks and brain damage. Consult with your doctor.
- FearFactory, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Do you ever wake up feeling alive in the morning. You might want to see your doctor as soon as possible. You might have a serious ailment that needs to be treated. You might want to get a trial case of Fude 69 and WatrZ. Side effects may include increased energy, slight memory gain, increased sex drive, better reflexes, immunity to all diseases, and immortality.
- Myztry, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Come on. You know how it works. Medicinal drugs are a trade-off. Increase the level of one chemical to counteract a failing organic system, which in turn throws another organic system out of balance.
You can't have your cake, and eat it too... Time to start chasing your inner tail... - oldgal, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1I have always wanted to go into my Dr.s appointment and tell them I need these pills and list them all - just to see what the reaction would be. So far I have been too chicken. Would love to see comments from doctors about prescription drug advertising.
- jbmcb, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1+1. Who the hell gets their medical advice from TV advertisements anyways?
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1 It is indeed. I no longer watch TV (except PBS) because the real "content" are the ads and there are more ads now than program.
- oldgal, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2You can also get them at the schools. Kids raid their folks pill bottles and sell them. Many of these kids don't even know they are dangerous and that this is illegal.
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Who cares.
- BlacklabelSAR, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1LoneRanger makes his mother proud yet again by missing the point and offering an Ad Hom attack. As usual.
- Sh0rtcake, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1what i love best about the pharm ads is the beautiful, melodic music they play in the background. it's like "please remain calm while i tell you about how this medicine will make your ***** implode." you know the NSAID commercials, telling all about how they're not BAD, but they may cause stomach bleeding, ulcers, and all this stuff.. those commercials are like 10 MINUTES LONG! the first time i saw it, i went in the other room in the middle of it, came back and it was still on! i said to my boyfriend "is this commercial STILL ON? JESUS!" and then it went on to talk about how all this stuff could be told to you by your doctor. i advocate home remedies and hollistic medicine, pot included.
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1When did Bart Stupak become a top Democrat lawmaker? I imagine with a name like Bart Stupak, you'll pretty much criticize anything if you think it will get your name in the news.
- DigitAl56K, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Devils advocate: Says who?
It is (supposedly) a free country and if I've heard of a medication via TV that I'm interested in then I can go to my doctor and ask about it. He might still tell me "no, that's not right for you". It's not as if I can go to the store and prescribe myself some of it. The problem with taking away advertising to the public is that the drug companies already advertise to doctors and in one way or another find ways to give them bonuses/discounts etc. At least this way you know you have options available when a doctor has been bought.
I don't like the drug ads either, btw. At least most of them give some mention to the long list of side effects you may experience. - kholburn, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1So they should be allowed to advertise illegal drugs? If you can't buy these drugs over the counter they shouldn't be advertising them to the public any more than marijuana or cocaine.
- snyperr2s, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2The worst are those stupid Extenze commercials, the funny part is that they never actually say it increases your penis size, just that "certain part of the male body", and the way that stupid bitch flutters her eyes makes it even worse.
- Leomarth, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2I don't think politicians have any room to talk when discussing deceptive ads.
- BabyWookie, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2I like the ads for birth control pills that, at the end, tell you that they don't protect from HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Really? They don't seal up your vag? I wonder who actually thinks that.
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Not me.
They are as innocent as a newborn bunny.
Actually, they never should have been allowed to advertise in the first place,as it just helps jack up drug prices. -
