- lundeja, on 08/05/2008, -20/+106Why would millions of Americans want to work together to fix a growing problem when John McCain and big oil have the answer all by themselves?
/sarcasm - damndj, on 08/06/2008, -10/+60Sen. McCain said tonight, "Obama a couple of days ago said that we ought to all inflate our tires, and I don’t disagree with that. The American Automobile Association strongly recommends it."
WOW. Really?? That is his quickest flip flop ever. - sharpfork, on 08/06/2008, -17/+50The GOP agenda: if it doesn't help them or their big business contributors, try to make make people fear it or laugh at it. Examples: Iraq- leave and the terrorist will get you, Global warming- that is totally funny BS, saving more oil than big oil getting to drill off shore will produce- this is totally funny BS.
- diggerphelps, on 08/06/2008, -5/+37Try this experiment: take a bicycle and remove about a quarter of the air pressure in the back tire.
Then ride.
Now fill it back up and ride again.
Much easier, right? - chrissku, on 08/06/2008, -12/+38Obama made John McCain look really stupid for handing out those tire gauges. Way to go Obama. If we can save 3-4% in energy costs a year just by keeping our tires properly inflated I say we do it.
- pintomp3, on 08/06/2008, -4/+29impressive. he flip-flops pretty quick for an old man.
- inactive, on 08/06/2008, -0/+17Devaluation of the dollar, two endless wars, erosion of our civil liberties, FISA, Patriot Act, housing bubble has burst..
WE'RE BICKERING ABOUT ***** TIRE PRESSURE.
This country is GONE.
ps. How about the fuel consumption of airplanes, freight boats and the us government overall? Thousands of planes, boats and government vehicles/military operations surely use more oil than joe blow, no? - cheeseron, on 08/06/2008, -3/+18The principles of physics cause tires to become poorly inflated, and you'd be surprised at house many people neglect to properly reinflate them. The market is supply and demand. If more and more people properly inflate their tires and more and more people buy better fuel efficient cars then the demand for gas will greatly fall, thus leading to lower prices. If you think drilling offshore is the real solution, then you should do more research.
- snoogit, on 08/06/2008, -1/+16He's saying the same principal applies to your car genius.
If it's harder to pedal your bicycle on under inflated tires, then it would also imply that it would cause your engine to work harder to travel at the same speed, thus being less efficient. - JoeVet, on 08/06/2008, -2/+16That's the problem with listening to small clips created by people with an agenda. He made those remarks after he gave a more complete discussion of his comprehensive plan. The inflate your tires comment came when some one in the audience asked what they, as individuals could to do help. Obama responded saying keep your cars tuned and tires inflated. He was not suggesting this as a national solution but only as a suggestion to those who would like to do their individual part. But the neo-cons will keep spreading the FUD, we all know that is all they have.
- kingmanic, on 08/06/2008, -1/+15Surveys pin the number of under or over inflated tires to be nearly a third. not 10%. Most people don't check and aren't studios about inflating them.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3072627/ - bjs3171, on 08/06/2008, -3/+16of course it'll have a more immediate effect. inflating your tires IS an immediate way to help the situation, while oil drilling will take ATLEAST 10 years to even begin happening. If alternative fuel or hybrid cars aren't more of a standard in 10 years, we're ***** anyway.
- paroxetine, on 08/06/2008, -7/+20jesus christ. ok digg. i ***** get it. obama rules and mccain ***** sucks.
- EvansHall, on 08/06/2008, -1/+14With all that's going on with our broken foreign policy, immigration policy, failing infrastructure, massive debt, collapsing economy and dollar ... THIS IS WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT IN THIS COUNTRY?!?!
- quandrum, on 08/06/2008, -1/+13Offshore drilling will add an estimated 200,000 barrels a day by 2030. That is 0.2% of today's oil demand. How much do you think that will actually effect oil prices?
And since they are under no obligation to sell it to American's, it will be really diluted by 2030 when we add billons more people to the global economy.
There simply isn't enough oil to continue our lifestyle. Pretending we can drill our way out of that situation is deluded. - inactive, on 08/06/2008, -2/+14And by "everyone," you mean "no one."
- MrHateMan, on 08/06/2008, -0/+10..you fail
- dbradley96, on 08/06/2008, -1/+10You should do both....der.
- Whorebane, on 08/06/2008, -6/+15Keeping tires properly inflated is also a big part of car safety, yet not everyone keeps tabs on their tires. I don't think a minor savings of 3% is really going to motivate people who haven't cared about the status of their tire inflation to really care now. I'm not trying to knock Obama, just simply pointing out that this is not energy policy (which I also know is not Obama's only idea in regards to energy) and should not be compared to drilling for more oil. Unless you want to install tire inflation police checkpoints, but that's not really for me.
- Fremen93, on 08/06/2008, -8/+17Well, McCain must realize that the majority of his support comes from knuckledragging morons, so he will of course use these brainless attacks because they work with those kind of people. Insincere attacks is the republican way of life. McCain knows that neither tire pressure, or offshore drilling will provide us with energy independence. They just reduce our usage.
- quandrum, on 08/06/2008, -2/+11How do you know it's useless if they haven't explored it and why do they still pay the leases if it's useless?
Why did the Republicans block a bill that said if you didn't start exploring a lease within 5 years you loose it? - InsaneOni, on 08/06/2008, -0/+9I don't think that anyone that dugg you down has ever ridden a bike.
- WasabiBomb, on 08/06/2008, -0/+8Sorry, wrong. You fail at... well, everything. If you're interested in Obama's energy plan, I suggest you look at his website where he's got it clearly laid out- rather than relying on your fellow Conservatives to digest and regurgitate your newsbytes for you. That business about keeping tires aired properly? That was a response to a particular question- but like most head-in-the-sand Pubs, your guys completely ignored everything else he said.
- dcmjzero, on 08/06/2008, -1/+9So using less oil is worse than using more? Your logic hurts me.
- diggduggDOOM, on 08/06/2008, -0/+8"However, Obama himself voted for a 2005 energy bill backed by Bush that included billions in subsidies for oil and natural gas production, a measure Cheney played a major role in developing. McCain opposed the bill on grounds it included billions in unnecessary tax breaks for the oil industry.
The Obama campaign has said the Illinois senator supported the legislation because it included huge investments in renewable energy."
from http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5isOFwdbq0tsqatW ... - archiesteel, on 08/06/2008, -1/+9"Also what % of people are driving around with poorly inflated tires? less than 10% for sure."
You should check your facts before citing figures - otherwise it gives the impression that you're mindlessly repeating the McCain campaign's talking points.
"More than a quarter of all cars and nearly one-third of all SUVs, vans and pickups are driven with tires at least 8 pounds below their proper levels, according to a new survey by the Department of Transportation."
http://www.nrdc.org/air/energy/fensec.asp - robbie32, on 08/06/2008, -2/+10How was it moronic? It's a fact. He wasn't proposing that as a solution to our energy crisis. IMO he was merely pointing out that there are little things that can be done that may seem insignificant by yourself or even throughout a town, but by adding those insignificant parts up, we can have quite an impact.
- archiesteel, on 08/06/2008, -2/+10Since you're too lazy to write original posts, and simply copy/pasted your own, I'll copy/paste my reply to you:
Actually, up to a quarter of cars and a third of SUVs on America's road have improperly inflated tires. - smacksaw, on 08/06/2008, -0/+8As usual, Paris Hilton shows us the way: we should drill offshore with strict environmental oversight, but while we wait to do that, we should properly inflate our tires.
Anyone remember when service stations GAVE service and checked your tires? In Oregon, they have Mini Serve. Amazingly, with mandatory service having someone pump your gas, they still have reasonable gas. In fact, on the border both north and south in Oregon, the cheapest gas is not in California or Washington where you must pump it yourself. And with a law requiring extra people to pump your gas, no one is hurting.
Yes, it offends our sense of free market capitalism, blah blah...except that it works. Forcing businesses to hire extra people doesn't hurt anyone in Oregon.
If they do that, why not have them check your tire pressure? Put a sticker for tire pressure ratings in your gas cap cover or on the cap, and they can check it. We should all have Mini Serve anyway. - Stemnin, on 08/06/2008, -3/+10It's the Viagra.
- cheeseron, on 08/06/2008, -1/+8look if a kid keeps jumping on a bed, buying another bed doesn't solve the problem. what we need are alternatives, not more dinosaur juice.
- cheeseron, on 08/06/2008, -3/+10The principles of physics cause tires to become poorly inflated, and you'd be surprised at house many people neglect to properly reinflate them. also just because you keep copy-paste-ing that comment, that doesn't make it true - pintomp3, on 08/06/2008, -3/+10since the problem is speculation, why not close the enron loophole?
- ivosilva, on 08/06/2008, -0/+7So... Republican much?
- Rudegar, on 08/06/2008, -1/+8until the growing middle class in china and India decide that cars were not their bag anyway
supply and demand is your enemy - WasabiBomb, on 08/06/2008, -0/+6No, he didn't. He actually has a comprehensive energy plan- his statement about keeping tires aired up was ONE LINE as a response to a woman who asked him what the average person could do to about the oil situation. As is typical of the Conservative movement, you guys took that one line and used it to mock him... completely ignoring the rest of his message.
The truly amusing thing is that the one line you guys chose to mock is actually good advice... so now you're backpedaling. - WasabiBomb, on 08/06/2008, -1/+7As quandrum has said (and which you people are apparently trying desperately to bury), if the land is useless then why are they maintaining the leases? Isn't that just throwing money away?
I have a few oil leases, and I can tell you why- they're pretty sure there's actually oil there, but it would cost too much to try to get it when there are easier sources elsewhere. However, they aren't sure... so they keep the oil lease locked up so that other companies can't get to it.
So if they've already got this land leased, why are they in such a hurry to get NEW land? Because they're afraid that Obama's going to win- which means they're less likely to be able to get the new land after the election. If they don't get the new areas locked down, they'll have to start spending the money to develop the already-leased land.
This whole offshore deal is a scam- it's the oil companies attempting to save themselves some money at the taxpayer's expense. - mnky9800n, on 08/06/2008, -1/+7Yeah, I'm with Sublime, if you do remember "correctly" then you should also remember where you found your facts which in turn you should freely share with the rest of us.
- arjie, on 08/06/2008, -0/+6Hmm, any link to actual predictions of the amount of oil that off-shore drills can supply? Just an interested party, I'm not even American.
- dood, on 08/06/2008, -0/+6As a fun anecdote, I went to go fill my tires after a day of the car being in the shade (but it being an otherwise warm day). The tire pump at the gas station said the tires were at 60psi(!), double the level they're supposed to be at.
Moral of this story, use your own tire gauge. - WasabiBomb, on 08/06/2008, -4/+10My god, you people are just a bunch of whiny babies, aren't you?
- archiesteel, on 08/06/2008, -0/+6"it does say alot about the intelligence of the average McCain follower compared to the average Obama follower"
You're right: the average Obama follower seems more intelligent than the average McCain follower. - lowmagnet, on 08/06/2008, -1/+71.5% is fine too. The point I think is doing something rather than whining about it.
Though that which Obama refers to is both tire pressure and tune-up of the car as well. That may well enter 3-4%. - r0b1, on 08/06/2008, -8/+14Wow. Is it November yet?
- pileopooh, on 08/06/2008, -2/+8If we had only began drilling for more oil in the U.S. when the popular president, Bill Clinton was running the show. We would be seeing that oil coming in now instead of the 8 to 10 years we would have to wait for new drilling to show any change in the price of oil.
- dcmjzero, on 08/06/2008, -0/+6There will be no tire police. it is called personal responsibility. ALSO, it is NOT Obama's energy plan. This is: http://www.barackobama.com/issues/energy/
- theDrizzle, on 08/06/2008, -2/+7wow...you say that like no one has ever thought of it before. "oh man, obama said i should keep my tires properly inflated, i guess that means i should drive around with 20 psi and 1 flat tire anymore."
what he said can be appreciated from the stand point of logical advice...but is by no means a solution, or something we should STILL be talking about several days after the statement was made.
also, don't get confused with a 3% increase in mileage. that means if you got 20 MPG, you would go up to maybe 21 MPG. that might save you 30 gallons of gas over the whole year (assuming you drive about 10000 miles). - archiesteel, on 08/06/2008, -1/+6"No archie, it will not have a quicker effect unless you make it mandatory to have properly inflated tires."
What are you talking about? It would have a quicker effect *if people did it*, obviously. Are you stupid, or just pretending? - JoeVet, on 08/06/2008, -3/+8You'll have to wait until 2020 if you're going for the McCain plan. And that big price reduction will equal no more than 1%. That's a big savings of 4 cents by today's standards.
