- otakushark, on 10/10/2007, -10/+643"This machine has the ability to inflict limitless, unbearable pain. What makes it OK, says Raytheon, is that the pain stops as soon as you are out of the beam or the machine is turned off."
Great, an unbearable torture device that leaves no evidence on the victim. I'm sure this will only be used in proper, moral and legal ways. - PirateFSM, on 10/10/2007, -8/+261Crucio!
- drunkentoad, on 10/10/2007, -8/+213"and is not being sold to countries with questionable human rights records."
Which country was this made in again?
How is finding new and interesting ways to inflict pain on humans not 'questionable' against human rights? - Tabou, on 10/10/2007, -7/+195Don't "Silent Guardian" me bro!
- BelXul, on 10/10/2007, -6/+184"No, Your Honour, the defendant wasn't hurt in any way. There's no marks, see?"
Officer discreetly turns to defendant and whispers, "You'll get another dose in your cell tonight." - syroncoda, on 10/10/2007, -2/+152yeah that'll disperse peaceful protests in the blink of an eye! hey we don't need to worry about people being pissed off at the ***** the government does anymore! they can drive them away with the flick of a switch and the zap of a ray gun.
- VANOS, on 10/10/2007, -2/+98I wonder if this works effectively if you're on large doses of Vicodin or other nerve inhibitors...
- hiphoc, on 10/10/2007, -2/+68ADS active denial system. Firehoses... meet the future. Coming to an anti war protest near you. If we ever hae riots like in the 60's, people are gonna get ***** up.
- spyd3rweb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+63Recent Taser abuse proves the police will handle this new weapon responsibly and not abuse it as well.
- SilenceGold, on 10/10/2007, -14/+74No way it should be used. There would be no evidence when the victim would claim police brutalities. Best reserved for the president's speeches. Aim it at him and watch his mouth being slurry.
- drunkentoad, on 10/10/2007, -3/+61makes you wonder how or who they tested this thing on before they came up with the final design.
- EvolvedAnt, on 10/10/2007, -5/+61Wonderful, so if this thing can project the radiation for a mile, someone could steal one, hide it in the center of a city, and just turn it permanently on remotely, creating mass hysteria and agonizing pain that you are unable to run from since you wouldn't even know where to begin running.
Just think, that at any moment and any place public or private, when you least expect it, you could suddenly find yourself in the most agonizing pain ever conceived, not for a split second, but for hours. This thing is a terrorists wet dream. It is probably really easy to figure out how to make your own once you steal one, after all it simple emits a form of radiation that is attuned to a frequency your pain nerves are sensitive towards. All they really need to do is discover the frequency which shouldn't take longer than a few hours to hack out of it.
They claim they won't sell it to another country known for torture... yeah because the black market doesn't exist right?
Truly sad times.. - ZenMojo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+57When I first heard about this device, it was about 10 years ago and they described it as an alternative to lethal weaponry for military use. I did not expect them to use this ***** on protesters or for crowd control until the upspurt in taserings of the last couple of years. Now I'm suddenly afraid.
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -3/+57How can anyone not see this as a huge potential for abuse of power?
- protogenxl, on 10/10/2007, -1/+54I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain. - liquidfirex, on 10/10/2007, -3/+51This could be one of the worst inventions next to the nuke... Imagine the ability for someone to abuse this? Seriously, this is a sick creation. It doesn't take much imagination to imagine this device being used in inappropriate ways. "Oh put him on the machine for a few min, he won't be dead". I'd be ashamed to create a device like this, especially with the current state of the US and waterboarding and the like.
- Lane, on 10/10/2007, -3/+50just what the world needs yet another method of inflicting pain without visible marks
- TenebrousX, on 10/10/2007, -2/+48secret, adj.
done, made, or conducted without the knowledge of others - JAVandiver, on 10/10/2007, -1/+43Put your hand inside the box, young Atreides...
- Fawkes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+42If it had a blue LED fan, I'd swear it was my Power Supply...
- consoneo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+41I wonder if it works if you have one of those little wire mesh thingies around your body like the Microwaves have....
Time to get the Pain Body Armor.. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+40Your instincts will be to remove your hand from the box. If you do so you will die.
Heat, upon heat, upon heat... - SignorDildo, on 10/10/2007, -5/+41This device is an abomination. Any government or organisation actively directing this technology against a living organism in any way other than a passive security cordon will be an enemy of humanity. That's 'humanity' as in 'humane'.
What the ***** are we doing to ourselves? Screw this species. ***** rot. - vornan19, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36I dugg your comment's subversiveness.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/10/2007, -4/+39A machine like that is unethical.
And I can see people pinned in a group while some ***** beams the weapon at them... can you say brain hemorrhage? - stacky, on 10/10/2007, -1/+32It's called a Faraday Cage. And yes, probably, but you'd look like a fool.
- bloaty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29Because the beam penetrates skin only to a depth of 1/64th of an inch, it cannot, says Raytheon, cause visible, permanent injury.
Notice the "cause visible, permanent injury."! - greenblob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27And onlookers can't know immediately that the protesters are being zapped! No more pesky youtube videos of "police brutality!"
- bsmeteronhigh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26Any weapon system devised will be put to use by your adversary. So that unbearable pain can and will go both ways. To think otherwise is shortsighted and naive.
- superal1394, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27never stopped House
- jorgepblank, on 11/05/2007, -3/+27Silent Guardian seems like euphemism for what it should really be called, Portable Hell.
- nhassan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24this was on FutureWeapon on Discovery a while ago.
- controltheweb, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24You just need the matching wand and you're safe ...
- physphd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22That's why your opinion does not count. You've never served, have you? What phrase is drilled into you head in every lethal force briefing for the last 2+ decades? Hell, the NRA has even caught on it their training.
We NEVER "shoot to kill," we ALWAYS "shoot to stop the threat."
Damn internet tough guys. - badassninja, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21It can also be defeated with a colt 45.
- LordByr0n, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22I only wish i could digg you twice.
- Lapper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Okay, this isn't new. This even had a segment on the morning news a few months ago. And you know how morning news is. They all wanted to see how it worked. "Ow! Hah hah! Ow!"
- jimmiss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18Just wait until they mount it on unmanned land and air vehicles.
- wizard13335, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18It's just like a neuronic whip from Isaac Asimov's books.
- implementor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Hmm...if it uses microwaves or radio waves of any kind, couldn't it be defeated with a Faraday Cage?
- oneoverzero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19"Can't go around maiming potential humans... We Bene Gesserit sift people to find the humans"
- stevenb486, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19I was thinking more like.. don't ray me bro!
- MWeather, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19Exactly if the police sodomize you with a nightstick, but don't injure you, then it's not brutality. Wait, what?
- chiefbandit2200, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to spin one in a circle while it's on, or get a bunch of them in a circle shape...
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20This is not a very effective tool at combating terrorists. The only situation it would really work against terrorists is some kind of large-scale hostage taking. Otherwise, this is mainly designed to be used against violent protesters.
- YourDoom123, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17A) just use many of them in a large circle.... each individual beam is focused, but because they have a finite width, an overlap can be created, and the whole thing shoots pure pain in all directions...
B) of course the gov't wouldn't sell it to countries known for torture.... saddam hussein doesn't count! he was on our side!!! same /w bin laden!!! - ghall, on 10/10/2007, -5/+21This needs to be made illegal. What the ***** is happening to this country? Whoever came up with this needs to be strapped to it with it running for all eternity. Such a sick mind deserves it.
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Public pissed off at the government? ***** an election when we have pain beams installed around the White House!
It's the crocodile filled moat of the 21st century! - jayathecat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15dont kid yourself. this weapon isnt about stopping threats, its about controlling the population.
- subterfuge, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15it's already in the hands of the most tyrannous government in the world. and are you saying that americans shouldnt have the right to protest? that the government should use this on them? i'm shocked that an american citizen is actually advocating the use of this weapon against american citizens!
