- arrogantprick, on 10/10/2007, -11/+121The fact that they discovered "improper adhesives" means they were actively looking for a way to get them taken down.
- inactive, on 10/29/2007, -12/+68"Washington city authorities said the posters have to come down because they were stuck on with adhesive that did not meet city regulations."
A) $10,000 is not the end of the world, it would be worth it for the protest.
B) They could take them down & replace them with posters with an approved adhesive, that would show those crazy neocons. - greenback1, on 10/10/2007, -7/+59I wasn't going to go to DC but because of this calculate effort to disrupt the protest I will certainly go. In fact I'm going to arrange it so that at least 6 or 7 freinds come along. Thanks for the motivation Mr. Authority.
- thirdman, on 10/10/2007, -4/+35Hush child, grown-ups are talking.
- MonsterChaOS, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27I've already got a van full coming with me! Working on a second or third.
- absolutroot, on 10/10/2007, -4/+26who is our enemy chad? it is not the people of Iraq. They had nothing to do with 9/11 you ***** romney parrot. George Bush's reasoning for going into Iraq was "they have weapons of mass destruction"(which still have not been found). Why don't you ask your precious george w. bush why the hell he hasn't caught osama bin laden yet? Have you forgotten 9/11?!
- nonchai, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22Speaking as a US outsider - who - like the rest of the world is affected indirectly and sometimes directly by what the US does, the above comment is so true. It seems that every time the republicans get into power they basicaly screw your country up. Then eventually the country votes in a democrat who tries to put things back in order for a few years.
Then the moral majority, corrupt rich and "nasty" brigade of the US gets wind of power, through whatever lies or bribes are necessary, and the GOP is back.
I so wish the rest of the world didnt depend on the actions and state ot the USA - then we could just laugh it all off in our British cynical way. Sadly the stupidity of the "thick and nasty" parts of America afect us in so many ways.
We needed the USA as a bastion of democracy and defender against more nasty regimes. But now we find the USA basically eating itself alive and going the way of the roman empire. The great sadness is that during all the superpower "hubris" of the USA , other countries have been getting richer and more powerful. Even Russsia is flexing the muscles. Yet this time with money behnd it.
The squandering away of all the democratic values the USA stood for in the past will mean that future superpowers wont give a damn about human rights.
Thanks to the USA we blew our chance.
of course theyll just blame those "damn liberals" - AnaHadWolves, on 10/10/2007, -14/+34I'll bet any posters that are PRO-war/support-the-troops haven't even registered a peep from these cretins.
God, I can't wait till the ***** and their butt-plug sycophants get the hell outta Dodge. - zweben, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Bring government approved adhesive!
- chase001, on 10/10/2007, -11/+29The good news is once every generation we are reminded why Conservatives are an opposition party and they can't govern. The power corrupts them too quickly and just like after Watergate we won't have to worry about them being in charge of anything for another 30-40 years.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+22I know my Grandma would have noticed something like that and called the city.
It could just be the fault of old people complaining :) - joebaloney, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19Maybe you should RTFA.
- manicallday, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17No. These signs are just a pain in the ass to remove. People do live here. Most of us agree with the march. However, we just ask that you pick up your ***** when your done. At least just make it easier for the poor smuck that has to clean up.
- geometry, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17In memory of the over 3 thousand American soldiers who have died for no reason in Iraq.
- FRANKeB, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17To those who are going to this rally, I salute you. Just remember to bring helmets and painkillers. Batons hurt like a *****. Persist to resist.
- Kewlduderules, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19You gotta be sh!tin' me. I think that is the dumbest argument I have ever heard for removing protest posts. That is just too laughable. Lame but nevertheless, dugg to show the stupidity of the government.
- miriclaire, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14It will take a long time to repair the mindset and psyche that is the American public. Reform of education, respect for science, respect for the earth, culling of rampant consumerism, disinterest in things celebrity, a hardened justice system, rational and discerning news viewing, and the quieting of religious fanatics. These are just off the top of my head--I'm sure there's more.
- DemLite2008, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Land of the Free??? Not anymore... Time to take it to the streets Americans!!!
- Smiths, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Well, Chad, I sympathize with the 3-6 American families that are losing a son/daughter everyday. I also sympathize with the innocent Iraqis who are caught in war they never wanted or started. These families and Iraqis are not my enemies. Invoke your 911 fear-mongering elsewhere. I hear BillO has a site you might like to post on.
- swrostmore, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14The rally is 9/15, here's a link to the organization's homepage. FTA: "This is part of a systematic effort to disrupt the organizing for the September 15 Mass March that is timed to coincide with the report of General Petraeus and the debate in Congress on the Iraq war"
http://digg.com/political_opinion/Repressed_Protest_fined_10k_for_posters_Homepage_Rally_9_15_D_C - jlewicki, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14No. That's the beauty of digg. If the majority of people who read the article like it, it gets dugg.
- JCSaint, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15Here's the thing. The keywords here are "Washington City authorities." Washington is a very liberal, Democratic city though many functions are under federal control. If this is a city official, I doubt it was designed to stop the protest (unless they didn't bother to get a permit for a march). Though, due to the structure of DC, it may be a federal official in which case, who the hell knows if this is the real reason or not.
- scabbers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Clearly, Bush will issue a pardon for this "excessive" fine.
- masgrada, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I too would be worried of alignment and sympathy with enemies. However what worries me most is the creation of these enemies for the sake of creation of enemies. They need an enemy to build domestic war policy support. Otherwise their platform would be based on nothing and they would lose power.
We have recently, as a country, realized that being in Iraq is a sham and another enemy is needed to continue war. - MonsterChaOS, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11You can't stifle the voice of the people pal.
- spyd3rweb, on 10/10/2007, -9/+18what it basically amounts to is the city probing and pushing in every area it can to silence dissent.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I used to work in D.C
This kind of thing happens all the time.
It is just this group making a stink about it.
There are always people wanting to post stuff. So D.C. has to strictly enforce their policy. (That way no one can claim bias.)
No need to get too concerned over this.
One of the first million man marches had problems with their posters as well. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9The point is that the adhesive does comply --- and yet they are still being cited
- edwartica, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12Considering the issues here are a) freedom of assembly, b) freedom to speak against the government, you SHOULD be crying a river.
Oh,m and the fact that the "enemy" is only an enemy because of the oil barrons. - moxley, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10There isn't going to be an America as we know it by that time. He and Cheney need to go now, and then we need to fix all of the ***** that allowed them to d what they have done - and repair the damage they have done.
- thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Have you ever been to DC? Do you know how LIBERAL the city is?
- Bdog2g2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Chad your homework for today is to define the following words:
Terror,
Terrorism,
Terrorist,
National Security,
National Emergency,
Patriot,
Surge,
Habeas Corpus,
Warrant-less Wiretapping,
signing statement,
rights,
constitution ( I could have gone on with this one, but I wanted it to be easy for you),
lawful,
separation of powers,
checks and balances,
executive branch (see purpose of and reason for Legislature/Judicial)
success(see War on Terror or Iraq),
winning (see War on Terror or Iraq)
And if you can come back with a definition (period), you'll get a cookie. And you'll be one up on the president. - Neuralphreak, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10How is it spam? Because it's political? and not on your agenda?
- bllambert, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6(in DC) These posters are everywhere. They are stuck on the sides of buildings, on utility boxes, and any other flat surface. The people who puts these up are vandalizing. Less than 10% of DC residents voted for Bush in the last election. The same people voted for the city counsel. This has nothing to do with political suppression, and everything to do with vandalism. There is a right way to advertise a protest, and this isn't it.
- sholt, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Look, every few weeks there some protest that's a big freakin' deal to whomever's in it here in DC. It's more common to see city plastered with political signs than not, and even the graffiti is more political statement than mindless tagging.
It's actually knida funny, being a resident here. Because you see so many of these types of posters, and just phase it out after a while.
Look, I could agree with you or not, that doesn't matter to me. What does matter is that you come here, clog up our metro, back up the beltway even more than it already is, and leave your protest materials all over our streets. Sure, it's all part and parcel of living in the nation's capitol, and we'll gladly take the money you spend... but don't expect any special quarter just because most of the city agrees with you.
Play by the goddamn rules. People live here, and you're not special.
/rant - MacGyver2210, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I don't think you need to go looking for a reason to attack these people about this, it's probably just that someone tried to take one down, it didn't come off right(wallpaper paste or some such *****) and they complained to the city about them. Some of those posters, especially ones put up by inconsiderate pricks put up with glue or paste rather than tape, are hard as hell to get off and can actually damage windows or walls depending on what they're made of. I am very liberal and am all in favor of this protest btw.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5DC's City Council consist of 13 members, of which there is only one Republican and one Independent. DC sent city workers out to test removing the signs and it took 2 people 15 minutes to remove one sign, so why should my tax dollars go to removing these signs, when the party responsible can be billed?
So send $5 to pay the fine and then you can go play bongos, dance around with puppets, throw rocks through window, play hacky sack, cry about the environment, animal cruelty, the World Bank, and all the other issues you stoned hippie wanna-bes bitch about for every protest you hold in DC. Oh yea, don't forget to protest the war. - saigumi, on 10/10/2007, -7/+12Good job Rawstory for presenting the story in a very anti-Bush way.
The Democrat responsible for the takedown is loving it because the sheeple aren't trying to find out who lodged the complaint before Bush bashing.
Well played. - AuditorTux, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10Hey guys... mind taking a look at the government of Washington DC? Its one of the most liberal and Democratically held cities in the nation. It isn't the "crazy neocons" or "Bush" doing this... its the city. Before you resort to the normal Bush-bashing-hatred, maybe check a fact or two.
- miriclaire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Ahem! Digg rips articles off other sites everyday, all day. It is the M.O. Otherwise there would be no Digg. So--see how ill-thought that comment was?
- Waiting2awake, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11Do you realize the simple fact it is in the US means it is by definition right of centre? Sometimes Americans seem to forget that even their "left wing", is really slightly rightwing in relative terms.
- mythandros, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5When the USSR fell apart, we had no one against which to compare ourselves.
- kaelyiesta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Sigh. So instead of doing some investigative reporting and checking some posters to see how they were applied, we are left with two opposing stories and left to pick which ever we want to believe. ***** I hate that. Is the charge false or not? It's like they decided to stop right before the finish line with this story.
- phatt-matt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4This just in...anti-war group not getting any attention for their rally and has concocted a false story to attract the attention of stupid Diggers.
- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I can believe it, if it makes it really difficult to remove then it is basically destruction of property.
- GabrielS, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Brilliant guerrilla marketing.
1) Use prohibited adhesive
2) put up flyers anyway
3) receive letter informing that the posters must be taken down
4) use letter as proof government wants to shut down the event
5) ???
6) profit - sholt, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Well, truth be told, there are a lot of old complainy people in NW DC. ;)
- 2reflective, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Indeed. Be prepared: the government will ship in a few 'protesters' to fire up the crowd and cause trouble as usual, just so the MSM can paint the whole crowd as a violent mob.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agent_provocateur - Bdog2g2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6its all relative, even relativity.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3D.C. local government and municipal is the most liberal on the planet. Stop being retarded you cry-babies all the pot smoking is making you paranoid. No one cares about your lame rallies, youre not important enough to deserve your own conspiricy.
