USAF F-15 Eagles Escort Russian Tu-95 Bears Off Alaska Coast
cnn.com — "U.S. radar picked up the Russian turbo-prop Tupolev-95 planes about 500 miles off the Alaska coast. The U.S. fighters from Elmendorf Air Force Base were dispatched to meet the bombers and escorted them out of the area without incident, the officials said."

- salomejones, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4Indeed, very frequent actually. Though dispatched escorts are something of a rarity (maybe 4-5 times per year), requests to find egress from US Airspace for foreign aircraft is an almost daily occurrence.
- Amazetbm, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4So bascially we're getting back to business as usual.
- inigomntoya, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5This was fairly minor compared to other "games" that go on. A guy I work with was on an aircraft carrier when a Russian Bear came out of the sky and dropped a paint bomb on the deck. There was some major hell to pay for some people on that boat...
Very cool pics, BTW. 2(b) has been my desktop background since I saw it here on Digg a while back. I am thinking of changing it to 3(d)...- unreg, on 03/27/2008, -4/+2I highly doubt that a Russian aircraft could get anywhere near an aircraft carrier, much less drop a paint bomb on it.

"Then, four Bear bombers flew near the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, with one of them flying about 2,000 feet from the Nimitz's deck."- unreg, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1"Western media earlier cited U.S. officials as saying that a Russian bomber came within three to five nautical miles and flew 2,000 feet (610 meters) above the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier off the Korean coast. A similar incident occurred less than a month ago."
With a few more facts one actually finds that the aircraft were flying at an altitude of 2000 ft, approximately 3-5 miles out. - unreg, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Hey look, more facts:
"Dygalo said the plane, assigned to Russia's Pacific Fleet, was on a routine patrol flight over the Sea of Japan, conducted in strict compliance with international regulations on the use of airspace over neutral waters.
"It is common practice," the Navy spokesman said, adding that two U.S. F/A-18 fighters and several Japanese F-2 and F-16 accompanied the Russian ASW plane during the flight"
So the plane was accompanied by at least 5 allied fighters.

- Skurt, on 03/27/2008, -2/+25Pffft... This happened at least once very 3 ~ 4 weeks when I was in Iceland, the Bears in the Air was a common thing.
We'd scramble out, a pair of F-15s and the Awacss. The F-15s would have lock before they took off and the Awacss already had lock as they ran 24/7 radar before they even started the engines.- kingo123, on 03/27/2008, -0/+7Cool that you were there to see it happen!!
- Skurt, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2I was stationed with the AWACS for two years in Iceland. No I didn't see the actual encounters, Yes I did stand at the edge of the ***** and see the pilots lock on the Bears, and yes I did see the Radars in the AWACS lock on the bears before they took off.
They would bring up the radar and on the radar screen you could see England, Russia, Germany from Iceland sitting on the ground.
They would watch the bears take off from Russia and when it was obvious they were heading in our direction we would scramble.

- unreg, on 03/27/2008, -8/+1I highly doubt your assertion that the F15s had radar lock before taking off.
And why would AWACS be operating their radar on the ground, isn't that what ground based units do?- alpha19, on 03/27/2008, -0/+6I don't see any reason to question him. Perhaps the AWACS do operate 24/7 so when they need to go airborne, they already have a radar map established. The F-15's could very well have had radar lock before taking off... considering upgraded radar systems these days extend 250+ miles, and with data being sent to them from the AWACS... there is no reason they shouldn't have radar lock.
- unreg, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1I do. You obviously have a very limited knowledge of how an aircraft radar system works. Any craft sitting on the ground with its radar operating is going to be overwhelmed with signal return from the ground immediately in front of it.
- alpha19, on 03/28/2008, -0/+0ground-based sends data to AWACS, AWACS sends data to F-15... AWACS acts as the command post for the intercept mission... pretty simple and straight forward i thought. you are right... aircraft radar is very focused and is interrupted by ground interference. i never said the aircraft were using their radar emitters... simply using their radar systems to track aircraft who's positions were being relayed to them from other systems
unbundle those panties....

- Skurt, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Oh, and to be sure, F-15s have a *****, AWACS' have a Flight Deck. in case you are confused as to which plane I was speaking of. The Pilots of the AWACS do not have radar for bears, only weather, there are like 20 stations in the back for the Bears.
And Trivia, The Radardome is tall enough for someone to stand up in. If you are over 6' you'll have to slouch. And the little bitty radar that is behind it, all the AWACS paint the black stripe in a different direction so when there are pictures, someone who casually looks at them would think they also spin. - Flytrap, on 03/27/2008, -0/+0Dude, you need to read the news a lot more often. The Russians fly under US radar and buzz US air craft carriers on a regular basis. The most recent was on the 11th February when a couple of bombers buzzed the USS Nimitz, twice - http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/02/11/world/ma ... ! before the air craft carrier could scramble a response. This has been all over the news dude. Read: http://patdollard.com/2008/02/navy-intercepts-russ ... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23117045/ and this one from the US military itself http://www.defenselink.mil/news/newsarticle.aspx?i ...
Of course this is not the worst of it. In December 2000, the Russians snuck under the radar with two fighters and buzzed the USS Kitty Hawk so close that "... shoes on the bridge spilled coffee and everyone said "H--y S---!. I looked at the Captain at this point and his face was red..." according to an account of somebody who was there. "...Four days later, the Russian intelligence agency e-mailed the CO of the Kitty Hawk and enclosed pictures they had taken of our dudes scrambling around the flight deck, frantically trying to get airborne." the account goes on. A copy of this 2000 account can be read here: http://www.worldaffairsboard.com/naval-forces/1066 ... An independent news account of that incident can be found here: http://www.discerningtoday.org/members/Digest/2000 ... A Washington Times report screams with the headline "U.S. ship took 40 minutes to respond to order" http://www.freerepublic.com/forum/a3a2f28db67ab.ht ... and the WorldNet Daily echoes it saying "Russian flyover has U.S. Navy buzzing" http://www.freerepublic.com/forum/a3a2f44cd73dd.ht ...
Another account from a separate article talks about the Russians having better stealth than an F117, because of how invisible they can be until it is virtually too late to do anything about them. One sailor writes about the Russians flying so low that they would buzz past the carrier below deck level and when one crashed doing the stunt, the US had to convince the Russians that they had not shot it down. This thread discusses the Kitty Hawk debacle and contains a link to a Russian site where the Russians crow about the fact that they sank the Kitty Hawk twice in "...simulated air attacks recently by overflying it completely undetected by its radars."
Anyway dude, Its easy to think the way you do from your rocking chair. Try talking to the men and women in uniform who have to deal with the real Russian threat every day and they will tell you that the Russians are still the other super power... they are just too broke to show it off, but they still have what it takes.- vroom101, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1"...Another account from a separate article talks about the Russians having better stealth than an F117..."

- zeero, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1i dont see the point of going all crazy about it. i dont think russians would be this stupid to just fly around with an actual objective of bombing something and let themselves be seen.

=p - JRobinson1026, on 03/27/2008, -2/+5We're not using Alaska anyway. Meh.

USA: Hey Russia, GTFO, You are NOT allowed here!
Russia: Come on, we're all comrades... right?
USA: NO, GET YOUR STUPID BEAR BOMBERS OUT OF OUR AREA!
Russia: :-(
USA: GET OUT OF HERE STALKERS
Russia: Uncalled for! Highly uncalled for!
*End Transmission*- Ap0x, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2that "GET OUT OF HERE STALKER" guy is why I stopped playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
- norcalscan, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1I'd love to hear the transmission of " :-( "
- thadjudkins, on 03/27/2008, -4/+4So, uh, whats the cruising speed of those turboprops and the stall speed of an F-15, I'm actually mildly surprised that they could escort them and stay in the air. Anyone remember the Simpsons episode where Sideshow Bob steals the Wright Brothers plane to try and get Krusty and the fighters can't fly slowly enough to follow it....
- malman4, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2your age is showing, but not showing much.............
- noahhoward, on 03/27/2008, -2/+1You'd be surprised turbo props are actually fairly fast. One of my favorite airshow sights is watching a P-51 and an F-15 fly in formation.
- gurellia53, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4P-51s are internal combustion. F-15s are turbofan. Neither are turbo prop.
- yoda133113, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Demonstrating his point even better, the P-51s are slower than the Tu-95s. so if they can fly in formation with the piston engine plane, the turbo prop shouldn't be a problem.
- gurellia53, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4P-51s are internal combustion. F-15s are turbofan. Neither are turbo prop.
- spiritflare1, on 03/27/2008, -4/+1why is this even news? Routine intercepts have been happening since SAC in 50s or even earlier. It's not even cool - up the cool factor with an F-22 Raptors intercept if u're going to post.

Who's to say? I sure wouldn't admit to the latter. - suzywang3000, on 03/27/2008, -0/+6were they inverted?

- sentinel106, on 03/27/2008, -1/+3This isn't good, but it happened all throughout the cold war and still through the 1990's and still to this day. Nothing new, but still not really good.
- gthrank, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2They should put radiation sensors in those F15s. If those Tupolevs are found to be carrying nukes 500mi from Alaska, that'd be pretty serious.
- zeero, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1so they'd just fly in and drop some nukes? to cause ww3? really? are you that retarded?

- 223Sniper, on 03/27/2008, -2/+1bears have a top speed of about 350mph, an F15 about 1800...not much of a contest there(if the F15 doesnt break up in flight ha). russian military is laughable.
- emomakesmecry, on 03/27/2008, -1/+4The Russian military is far from laughable. What's laughable is how long our own troops were driving around in unarmored Humvees in the middle east.
- 223Sniper, on 03/27/2008, -2/+0You can thank bush for that
- zoom1928, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3Bush wasn't even in politics or a government employee when that decision was made. How could you blame him? Oh I forgot, liberals don't use logic.

- Slovenian6474, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3Russian military is laughable because their bombers are slower than U.S. fighters? Aren't most (if not all) of U.S. bombers slower than U.S. fighters too?

- spam4jan, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Yes, except the bear can carry a nuke the size of the F15 along for the ride. And as has been stated, no sh*t sherlock a bomber is going to be slower than an interceptor fighter.
- 223Sniper, on 03/27/2008, -1/+0A lot of good a nuke the size of an F15 is going to do when the bomber is diving head long on fire, into the pacific.
- Slovenian6474, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Who drops nukes from planes these days anyway? That's so 1945.
- Space_Balls, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2350MPH? close to 600MPH my friend
- Virgule, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1 A Bear can fly and manoeuver at velocities a F-15 use for landing. And such as. :o)
- yoda133113, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1First, try 575 mph for a top speed, that's a bit faster than 350, second the Tu-95 is comparable to the B-52 which has a top speed of 650, not too much slower than a comparable aircraft. It isn't supposed to compete with the fighter jets (that's what escorts are for).
- emomakesmecry, on 03/27/2008, -1/+4The Russian military is far from laughable. What's laughable is how long our own troops were driving around in unarmored Humvees in the middle east.
- SuperVepr308, on 03/27/2008, -0/+6The Russian military is not laughable. Not comparable to ours but they are not a joke in my opinion. Lots of good tech and training there.
- solid12345, on 03/27/2008, -0/+7In some ways they are more powerful. Their technology may be antiquated and falling apart, but unlike the US they fight dirty. They had no qualms about raining fire on Chechnya and did not care whether they bombed civilians or not. We are more politically correct and that is why we are losing in Iraq. And don't get me wrong I am not saying we should stoop to their level but total warfare does work.
- tcklord, on 03/27/2008, -1/+1It worked so well for them when they invaded Afghanistan. I'm not saying we did any better, but their way has not been proven to be all that more effective.
- zeero, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1so the US is all flowers and lollypops and no civillian killing and no ***** country invading? wtf are you talking about them fighting dirty. you dont see them trying to police the entire world while falsly invading other countries.

- JoshuaLowe, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1This is an old school Soviet-era military/political tactic that never went away. It regularly happens, it's just been happening more often since the USA's plans to implement a missile shield in eastern Europe have continued, despite Russia's protests. Russia often "speaks" diplomatically through displays of military posturing. One of the best known examples of this "language" in action was the Cuban Missile Crisis. If you analogize it to individual behavior, it's akin to "acting out" or "passive aggressive" responses.
There was also a recent Bear overflight of the USS Nimitz, apparently it passed directly over her deck. - charlietuna, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1To the Russians reading this... a mighty fine plane you guys have there. It's a classic along the lines of the B-52, though I think the Tu-95 is better looking.
- yoda133113, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Nah, I like the look of the hulking huge bomber that is the B-52 (besides it's bigger, faster, and goes farther), but something can be said for a turbo-prop that's as good as the Tu-95
- scoresman, on 03/27/2008, -0/+0In Soviet Russia Tu-95 Bears escort YOU!
- bdpf, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Bear over flights of the Carrier Task Groups have been happening since the sixties. The TU-95 were old then but caused plenty of excitment for the troops. SMILE They just checking out the response time of the intercept. Love those bears! Too bad the flight crews can't trade bottles of _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ !
- lhbaker, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Not to mention they were taking pictures as they buzzed by at eye level. We all knew to show them our middle fingers.
- Raziel66, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5While the Russians do frequently violate our air space, it is not a friendly gesture. He's probing our defenses and sending a message. He has already stated on numerous occasions that he considers us to be in the middle of a new cold war, and he has publicly stated that his nukes have been aimed at Europe again (if they ever even changed their targets).
- Virgule, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Hey something happened: nothing happened.
