- Albionshores, on 10/18/2007, -9/+217From the Senate website the purpose of the act was described as: "To restore habeas corpus for those detained by the United States."
Elsewhere Habeas Corpus is described as:
"The writ of habeas corpus ad subjiciendum is a civil, not criminal, proceeding in which a court inquires as to the legitimacy of a prisoner's custody. Typically, habeas corpus proceedings are to determine whether the court which imposed sentence on the defendant had jurisdiction and authority to do so, or whether the defendant's sentence has expired."
That's it. It's not being weak. It is not about letting people 'get off'. It is about a court being allowed to make sure that everything is accountable, legal and above board. A vote against this is a vote for unaccountability and deception. - ruyen, on 10/10/2007, -5/+182^ List of people helping destroy the constitution.
- Itazura, on 10/10/2007, -7/+179So many people called from my state about this that Domenici's phone went down multiple times....and still he didn't listen. Representative government my ass.

- TheAcclaimed, on 10/18/2007, -9/+156So much for the constitution.
- Xinephzero, on 10/10/2007, -12/+132Thanks, GOP.
- darkshrike, on 10/10/2007, -5/+117Our government is broken, the only way to fix it is to reforge it with our own hands.

- jnosanov, on 10/18/2007, -5/+98I am in law school in New York, sitting in class right now, and now I am wondering why I went to law school in the first place.
- Depthfunction, on 10/10/2007, -1/+91The Republican party is a bigger threat to American freedom than al-Qaeda or Iran.
- Zarokima, on 10/10/2007, -9/+89After this I'm ashamed to be an American.
- dukeeeey, on 10/10/2007, -24/+891/5 Americans can't even locate the US on a map. 30% don't even know what year 911 happened. How many don't even know what habeas corpus or their basic rights are ? The mainstream media was saying it was GOOD that kid got tasered for asking Kerry the wrong questions ... rofl.
Your country is doomed. Destroyed by plenty.
Heres a video to wake some of you yanks up. It's about selling torture, this fits right in with arresting people then denying them a trial.

Maybe it's getting close to time for some vigilante justice? There are three boxes to use in defense of freedom, the soapbox, the ballot box, and the ammo box, in that order. Looks like we've used up the first two...
- elvenseven, on 10/10/2007, -8/+69Goodbye America
- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -4/+65It's only a matter of time before America goes the way of the Roman Empire, destroying itself through corruption, mindless indulgences, and attempts at overexpansion.
- bubba9999, on 10/10/2007, -4/+63***** you Joe Lieberman, John McCain, and the dickwad from my home state Mel Martinez. I hope you all rot in hell.
- omgitsfletch, on 10/10/2007, -2/+58### My first letter to a senator ###
To Mr. Martinez:
By your no vote today in "restoring habeas corpus for those detained in the United States" today, you have contributed to further degradation of civil rights in the United States of America. The suspension of habeas corpus goes against the values this country was founded upon, and the rights set via the Constitution.
If this bill passes and is vetoed, I feel you need to correct your stance and vote as necessary to override the veto, as restoration of habeas corpus is one of the most pressing civil rights issues of our current time.
I have just reached voting age for this next election, and have begun to get involved with a number of political groups, and I will do everything within my (albeit limited) power to assure you do not get back into office if your stance on this does not change. You have let down your constituents today, and you have let down the United States of America. - genezorz, on 10/18/2007, -3/+57Remember Remember the 19th of September.
Get your masks ready. - numlok, on 10/10/2007, -0/+53On the flip-side, props to the few who "broke rank" and did the reasonable thing:
Hagel (R-NE)
Lugar (R-IN)
Smith (R-OR)
Snowe (R-ME)
Specter (R-PA)
Sununu (R-NH) - elitedw, on 10/18/2007, -4/+55Notice how Lieberman says nay. . .
Why not change his party to republican - zioxide, on 10/10/2007, -7/+55***** Republicans..
- GeneralFailure0, on 10/10/2007, -2/+48Only six Republicans voted in favor, and I applaud those who did. It's ridiculous how this bill seems to have been divided mostly along party lines. This isn't a party issue, it's habeas corpus.
- omgitsfletch, on 10/10/2007, -3/+46Damn it, my Senator Martinez voted against it. What a piece of *****.
- aukxsona, on 10/10/2007, -2/+38he has been since day one.
- Zarokima, on 10/10/2007, -2/+34They obviously don't want fair trials so why give it to them? Hang the lot of the buggers!
- anamericangod, on 10/10/2007, -4/+33***** my Georgia Senators. You guys are an embarrassment.
Bill of Rights, FTL. - PakoBedejo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+28Perhaps we could learn a few things from Russia...fire all the ***** & put a new set of ***** in their places...basically send the Lobbyists back to level 1 in the money grind...sure, they'll gain XP & level back up...but if we keep resetting the database, we can manage it :P
- zioxide, on 10/10/2007, -3/+31"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God."
So much for that. - knomevol, on 10/10/2007, -5/+32realize a singular truth, for once in your life.
all humankind are created equal. this truth is self evident.
if there is no habeas corpus for one living creature, habeas corpus is dead to all. - pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28it's representative alright, just doesn't represent the people.
- swr1ght, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27As a former Republican who has changed my affiliation to Independent:
I agree completely. - zanzzz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+26They just hate our freedom!
- Disinterested, on 10/10/2007, -10/+35*sigh* time to move to canada
- aukxsona, on 10/10/2007, -4/+29Do something about it! Write. Picket. Yell. GET THE WORD OUT HE VOTED AGAINST THE CONSTITUTION and get his ass canned.
- fuzzynyanko, on 10/10/2007, -8/+33Well, McCain was looking more favorable to me if he managed to become frontrunner, but not now.
- TheRealToma, on 10/10/2007, -6/+30Ive got to say, the rest of the world sees alot of 'patriotic' americans, but to be honest, we know its all show. You're country is slipping away. :(
- alexkreuz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+27Unbelievable! So what if cloture failed. Ram it through anyway, let the Republicans filibuster it. Let them filibuster it until the next election. What is it with these lazy Senators and their cloture votes?
- i4mt3hwin, on 10/10/2007, -3/+26Suddenly those ridiculous terrorist movie plots where the lead terrorist always says "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." don't seem so bad. I mean, don't get me wrong... I'm not hoping for terrorism, but if things cannot be done the legal way, what other way is there?
- reckage, on 10/10/2007, -6/+29Makes me want to cry.
- BelXul, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23Anyone declared an enemy combatant or terror suspect can be refused Habeas Corpus. Be sure to read the Military Commissions Act of 2006. I think this is a travesty. We actually treated the Nazis better than that.
- growlzor, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25Immediately after the Bill failed Republicans lined up to receive a new years supply of Constitution toilet paper, Sharman Bear put on terror list
- zovres, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25worthless *****
- hmac, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23I ***** hate my senators (Tennessee)
