"Pay no attention to that enormous banner behind the President in that photo, printed by the White House printing office, which says, "Mission Accomplished." -- Tony Snow - thepompano, on 10/12/2007, -3/+48Full "Mission Accomplished" speech transcript:
http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/05/01/bush.transcript/ - brlittle, on 10/12/2007, -9/+49As Olbermann said, we know you're paid to lie, Tony. The least you could do is do it _well_.
- kremvax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Actually we went in to find weapons of mass destruction that presented a clear and present danger to the United States of America.
Specifically the nuclear weapons and biological weapons programs that the administration repeatedly described to the American people for the months leading up to the invasion. And the Iraqi unmanned flying drone program that was supposed to deliver these arms.
*Then* it turns out we were there to "liberate" the Iraqi people.
*Then* it turns out we were there to install a Jeffersonian democracy in Iraq ....
*Then* it turns out we're there to protect the Iraqi people from "insurgents"
The corpse of Saddam Hussein was a nice artifact of the occupation and all, but if that was our real goal, we could have accomplished that for considerably less than 3000 american lives, $375 BILLION Dollars, 650,000 dead Iraqi citizens, and all of our allies except Great Britain. (and Poland. Don't forget Poland.) - whiskeymb, on 10/12/2007, -6/+35in his very shaky defense, Bush never said the words "Mission Accomplished" in his speech, he just let the giant banner behind him speak for him. Too bad for Snow it was the White House that made the banner.
- William01, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33You tricked me, luvkit. I want my digg back. I dugg up your first comment for its great sarcasm, then with the second comment came the disconcerting realization that you think we're actually looking for WMDs in Iraq.
- 60days, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32TubaTechno: Ah, I see - the moment thinkprogress repeated the statements made by Tony Snow and the photo-op created by the Whitehouse, they ceased to have happened. I imagine your world is a confusing one.
- hamandcheese, on 10/12/2007, -17/+38Tony Snow is more of a puppet then Pinocchio.
- wonboodoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16In Tony Snow's defense, has there every been presidential spokesman who wasn't a puppet? I mean, do you expect the press secretary to do anything other than defend everything the president has ever done? Can you name a press secretary that has ever done otherwise?
- celeronxl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16We've always been at war with Eurasia. We never said otherwise.
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20It's like we've got our own Iraqi Information Minister.....
- an0nymous, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17@diggsonlyneocrap
I would argue that the checks and balances have been seriously compromised by signing statements and the unitary executive theory put forward by the White House. - geometry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I'm going to try this at work. I'm going to hang a sign behind me that says "Mission Accomplished". Any time someone comes to ask if I've finished my work I'll point to the sign, but not say anything. If they question me later I can honestly say that I never said I actually finished the work. I don't think I'd have a job much longer.
- Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21Uttles, the wrong mission was "accomplished." Those of us in Manhattan are still waiting for justice. Where's Osama?
- jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16"Biased news is no news at all..."
All news is biased. - lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Where Bush's previous spokespersons choked on the BS they were ordered to regurgitate, Tony Snow seems to do it with relish. Truly amazing.
- Pile, on 10/12/2007, -13/+25Another media whore: Tony Snow
The worst part about this is you know this loser is going to write some tell-all book and ride it to the bank as soon as he finishes his servitude towards King George. - trimpton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The people still supporting Bush have me baffled, its like believing in Santa when you are 40 years old. Doesn't the illusion get old?
- jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Snow does come from Fox news, originally.
- jstohler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Only the deluded could look at the mess in Iraq and say we've done a good job.
- cocoamix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13WAR IS PEACE; FREEDOM IS SLAVERY; IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
ACOMPLISHED IS NOT ACCOMPLISHED.
Sorry to shout. It's 22 years on, and people haven't caught on. - diggityiggity, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16@DiggsOnlyNeoCon,
Something about your name tells me I shouldn't waste the time to correct you, but:
"and I like the ones where the dictator has checks and balances in place."
Your tense is incorrect. Replace "has" with "had," and you'll have it right. - Antiproton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11That's not what the banner was for. He said in his speech that the "Battle for Iraq was over". Does it look over to you?
- ZWash300, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I still have a hard time believing that some people in this country still take the Bush administration seriously. It's honestly one of the most ridiculous, incompetent collections of people that has ever held power. Their press conferences are a virtual gag reel, full of ridiculous contradictions and denial of any wrongdoing. Bush can't logically back up his disastrous war, so he sends Faux News buddy Tony Snow up there to lie through his teeth and keep a straight face for the cameras.
- aresef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Olbermann last night declared him Worst Person in the World, saying something like "If you're going to lie, at least do a better job of it. We're not third graders, you know?"
- InetRoadkill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The one thing Orwell didn't anticipate in his book 1984 was the introduction of the internet. It's a lot harder to (in the words of GW) "catapult the propaganda" when there are millions of people ready and willing to rip you apart for your *****. If this all happened in 1950, it would have been a lot easier for Chimpy McFlightsuit to get away with this blatant distortion of facts.
- PABeachBum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It's "inaccurate" how exactly? So exact quotes straight from the white house is just "opinion" of "some blog".
Wow. You are really deluded. - TheChihuahua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I can't believe that guy still doesn't have his own show!
- heaintheavy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Um, he was hardly saying that Olbermann's word is "gospel". He was simply choosing a quote by someone that is relevant to this discussion.
See, Tony Snow lied. The transcript is there. Snow tried to use a myth the right-wing has been trying to use ever since they realized the whole banner thing was a mistake. Right-wingers still think it was the ship that put the banner up -- yeah, blame it on the TROOPS. Anyway, it was actually the WHITE HOUSE that printed the banner. OK? Snow lied, or at least tried to further a myth.
Snow didn't do a good job of lying. And Olbermann's quote is entirely appropriate. - jstohler, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Thanks! That clears everything up! I see now that I was wrong to ever doubt the veracity of the president words! I love GWB!
- Zoshchenko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8They really do think the American public is totally stupid. Tony Snow probably looks into the mirror each night and congratulates himself on "foolin' 'em again!" Incredible. We need a new word. Hubris doesn't do justice to the members of the Bush administration.
- jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13"Yes. A dictatorship. That's exactly what we live in. Don't you love those dictatorships where you vote for your dictator? Oh -- and I like the ones where the dictator has checks and balances in place."
Yeah, like in Soviet Russia how you were free to vote for the communist party leader of your choice.
Yes, the Corporate lobbyist all have wonderful checks on them.
I know the Native Americans and the former African American slaves appreciate those checks and balances everyday.
/waving flag - way2muchsense, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It takes a special kind of whore to do what Tony Snow does. Yeah, being a mouthpiece is in his job description, but still....
- jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"mark the end of major combat operations in Iraq. "
So you think the major combat operations are over? Huh. - InetRoadkill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It's $475 billion now. They just added another $100 billion last month to the total.
- jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7" wish people would stop spamming digg with inaccurate ***** from thinkprogress.org, which is nothing more than a blog, ie. opinion, kind of like the NYT."
When will people understand what spamming means?
Was it spamming when I walked into a 7-11 on the day of Bush's first primary in a very important state and all walls on all outside aisles contained Time magazine with a very pro Bush article on the cover? That year didn't have a cover of Al Gore at all. Remember, Bush won Time's man of the year? Remember they said that they choose the most influential man...and weren't biased? Remember who it was next year? Conservative Giuliani...don't you think that Osama was a tad bit more influential in 2001?
Must be the liberal media. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Tony Snow is why democracy doesn't work. He makes a living lying to the American people. He's a professional liar.
- Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I feel a little bad for Tony Snow. His entire job is to pretend that the worst president in American history is, in fact, infallible. I'm sure he doesn't actually believe half of what he says. Of course, he is unnecessarily combative and abrasive while spinning his fairy tales, which I think is why it's so much fun to treat him like the salaried punching bag he is.
- Antiproton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9You're wrong. Ambiguous though the "Mission" was, they didn't achieve any objectives other than overthrow Saddam.
- redcard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7We did.
Now we're being told we're un-American for disagreeing.
Or that we somehow misunderstood it.
Or that it wasn't REALLY his opinion, but the soldiers. - Shilov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Tony Snow: There are no insurgents in Baghdad. The walls of Baghdad will run red with the blood of the insurgents!
- jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"thats funny. i could have sworn he was voted into office. also he will be gone in another year. he will be replaced by another democratically elected person."
Yep, we elected the lobbyist that allow us to see our free choices with billions in media spending and advertising.
/still waving flag - darkmule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@uttles
Bush said major combat was over, yet major combat had not even started yet. You cannot ***** your way around that. - baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11maybe King George thought it was "Opposite day"
- grinch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6These guys are a bunch of liars and have been lying, cheating, and stealing since before they lost the popular vote in 2000.
- orientis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Don't be silly cocoamix, that was just a book! It couldn't ever *really* happen, could it?
Could it?
@cristobal87 Big Brother is just a face on a screen, on posters. A name to worship. A figurehead. - drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8What's that sound ? Whats that smell ? Oh it's Bush wearing Flip-Flops
like when he flip-floped on its never been stay the course - jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"You're a real ***** if you think there is no liberal bias in the media. Heaven forbid if someone says anything positive in a magazine or gives someone you don't like acknowledgment. Pull your head out of your ass. "
"Liberal" or "Conservative", the main media is simply Corporatist.
Since we are now name calling: Corporatist Conservatives like yourself are either completely stupid (verging on retarded) or cynical and hateful.
BTW they didn't have racks for those magazines all throughout the store the day before. Money can buy a lot of things. - darkmule, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@DiggsOnlyNeoCon
We're surely not a democracy.
If you feel like disagreeing with the statement 'we're surely not a democracy' grab a US Government Textbook of some sort and stop being ignorant.
Bush never did actually say 'mission accomplished' within his speech, however like everyone else has said, the banner spoke for him, its something he must live with. If he did not want it there, it should have been removed before the speech was televised. Hes the President, he does have that power believe it or not. Tony Snow trying to make an attempt to crawl out of that is just insane. Whether this is from some leftist bias blog or not, the story itself is true. Major combat had not even started yet in Iraq, WMD's were non-existent. You cannot back away from lies.
As a public official sometimes you say things you regret, or things that are not truthful. The best thing to do is to admit to what you said, and set a path to advance from there, your apologizes will either be accepted or ignored. However lying and not admitting it when the time is right, letting it go on and get out of hand, well that gives you Iraq, a broken military, and a broken government. How someone can go to bed like that every night amazes me. - edrift101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Tony Snow should be pulled from his car and beaten until bloody daily for lying to the American public day in and day out.
The American people need to hold these people responsible for what they say and do. -
