- taylorshelton, on 09/03/2008, -7/+88this is a pretty disgusting violation of constitutional rights - not just of the right to free speech and assembly, but also of a free press. when credible journalists start getting arrested, how are we to know the truth?
- schumi, on 09/03/2008, -3/+39As a University of Kentucky student I find this particularly disturbing... I look forward to reading about this in the Kernel when it is released.
- inactive, on 09/03/2008, -15/+49Why should the right wing respect people's rights? What is the down side for them? No one is going to stand up to them. They won't face any legal repercussions. They have tortured children and gotten away with it. Millions of Iraqis have died at the hands of the American right wing. They aren't worried about arresting a few college students.
- tbhurst, on 09/03/2008, -7/+38I'm looking forward to more accounts of this trickling in. I can't think of the last time I saw this many journalists being arrested in the U.S.
- borez, on 09/03/2008, -6/+3414 rules of Fascism..no.6 now ticked off ( and, quite frankly, in the case of America that completes the set )
http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/archive/in ... - swrostmore, on 09/03/2008, -4/+31A half-dozen instances of laws being broken by 1% of the otherwise peaceful protest group justifies a "National Security Situation," mass arrests, and the detention of journalists?
Why doesn't St. Paul's DAILY average of 33 "crimes against property" also justify martial law, then? - mescad, on 09/04/2008, -0/+18According to the Kernel's article about the event, the police say they will be charged just like the rest of the protesters because they weren't credentialed, on assignment journalists.
http://kykernel.com/2008/09/03/arrest-kernel/ - simplyintricate, on 09/04/2008, -3/+18What are they teaching in the police academies these days? Whatever it may be, it sure isn't enough to make sure that the people who enforce the law aren't violating their powers.
- jeffiek, on 09/03/2008, -4/+18Digg?
Seriously, technology may be the key, the light at the end of the tunnel. Too many people have video cameras, cell phones, and internet connections.
These disgusting violations of HUMAN rights ( they are recognized by the Constitution, they are not granted by the Constitution ) can only exist in the shadows.
No army can stop an idea whose time has come. The idea that people should be free from this monstrous behavior is here. The race is on.
I'm betting that technology can spread freedom faster than the government can suppress it. - monkeysama, on 09/04/2008, -0/+11That's not planned until mid-October. Geez.
- BoneheadFarker, on 09/04/2008, -0/+11So...why did they need to review her video tapes to see what crimes she committed if they had any real reason to arrest her in the first place?
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -2/+13If they are going to arrest any journalists, they should arrest the MSM for their blatant propaganda in favor of war crimes.
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -1/+10Were you in a coma during the DNC?
- secrity, on 09/04/2008, -0/+9Cover a riot, get beat up and go to jail.
- imover, on 09/04/2008, -6/+15What is wrong with the police nowadays. I feel this is getting quite out of hand! It seems like everybody is rioting but none of the news media is covering it?
- pe5t1lence, on 09/04/2008, -2/+11Sigh. A police officer's word is not the law. "resisting law enforcement" is not a crime. Resisting arrest is a crime, but you must already be in the process of being arrested.
- cadmiumpaint, on 09/04/2008, -3/+12The GOP and John McCain cry like little babies that the media is treating them unfairly and journalists are being arrested outside of their own convention. Must be a coincidence.
- Jhiaxuz, on 09/04/2008, -2/+10I think that with the recent spree of ***** coming from the St. Paul Police Department that giving the police the benefit of a doubt has all but evaporated and it's more than likely they were arrested under unconstitutional measures.
I could very well be wrong but I have a feeling that that is the case. - xbxoxy1, on 09/04/2008, -4/+12It's a sad day for journalism :-S
- gllopc, on 09/04/2008, -1/+8The revolution won't be televised - as all of the journalists will be imprisoned.
- BotchaMcCoola, on 09/04/2008, -7/+14When will people ever learn. Big Bro must cure those who do not conform.
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -4/+11Many on the left voted for the war. People were arrested in Denver. That was run by your beloved Left. And congress is now run by the left. What have they done to end the war?
- BoneheadFarker, on 09/04/2008, -0/+7You know something else that sucks? Dumbasses who put 3 pages of whitespace in a comment. Eat a dick...
- pe5t1lence, on 09/04/2008, -0/+7It was in today's Kernel. Look on their website if you want to read it.
- AgainstObama, on 09/04/2008, -2/+9I seem to remember a reporter being arrested at the DNC convention for taking pictures of DNC people meeting with big money donors.
- tbhurst, on 09/03/2008, -3/+10Yeah, I was away in Denver at the DNC.
I saw no journalists being arrested (doesn't mean it didn't happen, but it was nowhere near as pervasive as it has been at the RNC). I'm not arguing that all things are equal either, because it sounds like the protesters in St. Paul have been much more unruly than those in Denver.
And that link you passed along is about arrests in St. Paul at the RNC. - shady8x, on 09/04/2008, -3/+10Never fear Faux news is here!!!
Just enter the 'no second without spin' zone and they will give you the facts they think you should know!!! - Khast, on 09/04/2008, -2/+8[this comment was removed by request of the RNC.]
- Kahnza, on 09/04/2008, -1/+7Noone is standing up to it? What about the Libertarians and Constitutionalists?
The Revolution is coming. Please don't get in our way. The Sons of Liberty shall cleanse this country. - TheVigilante, on 09/04/2008, -0/+6OMG I go to U of L, an hour away, how come I'm not rioting?
But in all seriousness, this ***** needs to stop. Who watches the watchmen, indeed?! - poprocksandsoda, on 09/03/2008, -5/+11How about at the DNC?
http://www.coloradoindependent.com/6588/democracy- ...
You've been away for awhile I take it? - numlok, on 09/04/2008, -3/+8Thankfully, the ACLU is already sinking their teeth into this one: http://www.aclu.org/freespeech/protest/36634prs200 ...
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -4/+9Yeah it's not like an ABC reporter was arrested outside of the DNC last week in Denver.... what's with all these double standards
- normlsparky, on 09/04/2008, -0/+5denial will not change the fact that this is true. look into the protests that occurred during the 2004 RNC held in New York. police falsified reports of protesters actions to get convictions. unfortunately for them, that modern miracle called video showed up in many of the lawsuits that followed and vindicated the victims of police brutality. it has cost the law enforcement agencies hundreds of millions of dollars and resulted in perjury charges against several officers. this is why so many journalists are being beaten, intimidated and arrested. it is simply financial damage control. even if they are just detained and then released a few hours later, that insures a few hours less of video coverage to be used against these law enforcement agencies later during the inevitable lawsuits that will be filed against them.
- Hangly, on 09/04/2008, -0/+5Totalitarian governments violate rights and abuse people. What else is new?
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -1/+6You would think the city was going up in flames from the police presence and the number of arrests. This is more than a simple overreaction, it is the first step towards the creation of a Police State.
- Crabmen, on 09/04/2008, -0/+5Isn't Minnesota a blue state?
- ren1999, on 09/04/2008, -0/+4How is protesting criminal behavior unless bottles are thrown? It is time to end arrests of peaceful protesters at all conventions, Republican and Democratic. People have a right to speak out.
- TheVigilante, on 09/04/2008, -0/+4The French have revolted like eighty times over the course of their history to change their government.
The US has had the same government for over 200 years and I'm starting to think that's a bad thing.
The curtailing of civil rights, the fact that the people are more afraid of the government than the government is afraid of its people.
WE are the ones who are supposed to give power to the government.
Every day I read something that makes me more and more sick of the **** that's going on in this country, but what can I do?
How can I help make a difference? - drjoshbrock, on 09/04/2008, -0/+4If you actually read the article you would realize that these journalists ARE students, but were NOT on assignment. If you're going to bash, I suggest you read the article first instead of getting 2 things wrong in one sentence.
- stickyman, on 09/04/2008, -0/+4lixx0115 is correct.
there is a big difference between fascism and communism - inactive, on 09/04/2008, -0/+4Shut up
- lixx0115, on 09/04/2008, -0/+4Mao's China and Stalin's Russia are not fascist. They are communist . There is a difference.
- Hangly, on 09/04/2008, -0/+4They never come right out and say what they're doing. Elections will never be canceled, just "postponed."
- sajorojas, on 09/04/2008, -0/+4Don't start the revolution without me!
Or Jesse Ventura... - tomarocco, on 09/04/2008, -0/+4I am God, and I can tell you that the GOP is not MY will. And for your comment you shall rot in Hell, my blasphemous Son.
- tibbon, on 09/04/2008, -0/+4Go first amendment! Support that constitution.
- MilitarySon, on 09/04/2008, -3/+7I go to UK and I work there, WTF???? Why aren't there Riots here on campus???
- Hangly, on 09/04/2008, -2/+6Why through approved propaganda outlets like Fox and CNN, silly pants.
