- zorpscorp, on 10/12/2007, -10/+64"Terrorism is the best political weapon, for nothing drives people harder than a fear of sudden death."
- Adolf Hitler - teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -9/+28Yes there was and the Gov was warned about it and was watching the damn suspects but did NOTHING about it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+24RE: why did they stop INCOMING flights.
This was probably the choice of the airlines. Incoming flights wouldn't have been able to leave. It's cheaper to refund the fairs for one flight and have your $150 million dollar plane still be able to generate revenue on other routes, rather than have it grounded in the UK for an indeterminate amount of time. - scoot87, on 10/12/2007, -16/+30You gotta love the great limited-government, conservative-style, liberty-loving, freedom-fighting administration that is in the White House.
- WonkerSmack, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Nobody seems to care about all the cologne, mouthwash, and toothpaste that has been ruthlessly thrown away at airport security as a direct result of this!
Please, I beg you, think of the toiletries! - silenceHR, on 10/12/2007, -21/+33Since news broke out i was wondering why stopping INCOMING flights to UK if the threat was for planes going OUT of UK.
Prolly to create more mass hysteria and get those TV craws something to show from around the world. I simply cant see reason why would flight from.. lets say Frankfurt, Germany, be stopped from landing on UK airpport. But with such order, there was chaos not only in UK, but all over the world. It sure looked much more serious with reports of stranded passengers coming from every corner of the world. - evizaer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Who really knows? All we civilians can do is just take shots in the dark. The government sure as hell isn't going to tell us that they are manipulating us. People want to be scared, it makes them feel important. It rouses patriotism. "I won't let my brother and sister Americans be killed by some a-rab terrist!"
All this speculation is just that: speculation. No one's going to tell us unless they want to get killed. It'll be interesting in 50-100 years when documents from "The War on Terror" are declassified and we see what the hell was really going on. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+21Entire governments run on PR, Just look at your elections :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18You all are rushing to judgement!!
Wait, I'm TOTALLY for what you said, I even believe that this is timed nicely with the midterms. BUT!! If they find the chemicals and everything needed to make the bombs and there is sufficient evidence pointing to them creating a conspiracy to blow up planes. I ABSOLUTELY believe that they have every right to arrest them.
Tell me, when is it the right time to arrest someone when two people decide to blow up a train? Right after they agree to do it? Then immediately proceed to buy a ticket on the internet? Maybe after they get there in that same day of purchasing the ticket and all the chemicals needed? We're talking minutes people, minutes. - jbcghia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11You are assuming the war on terror will be over by then
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Too bad it's the same in the UK
- zouhair, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15You talk about the same government that had "proooooofs" of WMD in Iraq???
- almir, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17Look at this crap speech :
“We think we have the main suspects in this particular plot,” Home Secretary Reid said, “but there could be others out there, perhaps people we don’t know.”
“It is highly likely there will be another terrorist attempt,” he told the British Broadcasting Corp. “The threat of a terrorist attack in the United Kingdom is still very substantial.”
There could be, or ther not...
Of course Mr Reid, I would like to have sex with Brittney Spears, but if she dont want, I could have sex with Madonna... - helix400, on 10/12/2007, -20/+29"Mostly propoganda" huh? So those 20+ people were not trying to blow up planes? So they may have been, say, months away instead of days away? So someone from Pakistan did not wire them money and tell them to hurry up and execute the plan?
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17@ Alphabet
They weren't THINKING about doing it, they were PLANNING to do it. If you'd rather not capture terrorists, go ahead and think that way. I'd rather try to stop thousands of people form dying, but I can completely understand why you support the death of innocent people. - happyfappy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15The "propaganda" is in the exaggeration of an existing threat, not the wholesale fabrication of a threat, and in the timing of this release. This information was released a day after a conservative democrat (Joe Lieberman) was defeated in the primaries by an anti-war liberal, and since then the White House has been taking every opportunity to scare the pants off of people in order to score political points.
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -16/+24There was no imminent threat on 9/1/2001 either. Would have been nice if a certain 19 people had been arrested then though.
- scoot87, on 10/12/2007, -16/+24I found a similar commentary of how terrorist plots are used as mass hysteria like the sears tower plot... http://www.digg.com/political_opinion/Most_chilling_terror_plot_since_9_11_Not_quite_Terror_Plots_the_Truth
- Tsujigiri, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14I can say as a project manager that the further out a plan is foiled the less likelihood that its designers will be able to pick it up and re-execute it. This is because of the fact that, at that late of time in the game, you've expended most of your resources - time and planning on things that have now been lost to your enemy or folly. It will take more time to make those up, if you're lucky enough to be able to. However, if a plan meets an unforeseen death early, then there's a greater chance of it's return since it still has resources not yet spent waiting for it in the pipe.
Just one way to view this scenario. I know that if I had a choice of any of my projects failing It wouldn't even be a question of when I'd prefer them to. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17That's fear-mongering for you. Nothing brings a country together like terror or a tragedy.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -12/+19"This whole terrorism scare appears to be mostly propaganda"
Pardon my french, but no ***** it's propaganda. - Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -17/+24Keep us scared and malliable, and we won't look too closely at their fisical policy. Makes me want to wretch.
- nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If this were Israel, we'd take a look at 90% of the people boarding with human eye and say "this is no terrorist". The 10% or less we can't be certain about get screened. But we have to be politically correct. If you're going to stop a nervous sweating Arab, you have to stop everybody.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It's linked on the site. It's MSNBC, though, not NBC:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14320452/ - DiggCommando, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Perhaps it's a conspiracy by P&G, Colgate-Palmolive and other such companies that sell the stuff in order to increase profits ;-P
- wesb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Source?
- nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -3/+91984 is actually coming true - has been happening for a long time. But our little jihadist friends who want to kill us are still real.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Nah.. not until Africa bombs Greenland
- NoahVail, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11
WARNING! The content of this article May Be All Too True. - zouhair, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14ASS : You know what elephants did to disapear?
HOLE : uh?? no
ASS : They wear glasses
HOLE : Don't be stupid who ever saw an elephant with glasses?!!
ASS : See, it worked!! - Jadinlee, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16The news media wouldn't immediately question the validity and urgency of the story because it isn't in their best interest to do so. I'll bet when the story broke they actually thought of this angle and had reporters get to work on the story. But why rush that story out when you can milk the audience over a terror alert scare and up your ratings... then when that dies down bring out the story of how it was politically contrived and questionable. We've seen this over and over again so it shouldn't be a surprise. Big media is about maximizing profits by maximizing ratings. Sad, but not surprising.
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8This is why Political advertising should be banned, and (possibly) news media need to have caps on their profits (or be non profit)
- youareretarded, on 10/12/2007, -15/+20You know what's great about going after people for something they "might" do? The fact that it's almost impossible to dispute what they "might" do when provided with the most minuscule of evidence.
Anyways, this whole situation smells. - blackbelt88, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Is it just me, or is it starting to seem like we're living in 1984 rather than 2006? We talk about Bin Laden and Al Qaeda like Big Brother talks about Goldstein and The Brotherhood. Now I'm not going to go so far as to suggest that 1984 is actually coming true; I think we're far from a society like that, but with all the illegal phone tapping and data collection, it really makes you wonder.
- mattsovesky, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9If you are intelligent enough to investigate this by reading the original msnbc story, u can see that they were preparing a "Dry Run" to see if they could mix the chemicals during a flight. Anyone with a Brain would see that letting that happen, knowingly, would be a potential disaster. What if there was an accidental explosion during this "Dry Run", killing a couple hundred people, and it came out that we knew about it and didn't arrest them before it happened?
- scoot87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yep
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Uh, the article IS from MSNBC.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14320452/ - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7didn't we just go thru this with the "terrorists" down in miami? the ones who tried to buy "terrorist boots and uniforms"?
- blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why do we speculate those are not real?
- The same people who make long speeches about this are the ones who blatantly lied to us about iraq.
- Who is really advantaged when everyone is scared to death by yet another foiled plot? (Midterms anyone?)
The fact that there have been real attacks and that they are definitely quite a few guys willing to die to kill some americans does not mean that others (a.ka. the US govt) do not use and abuse every occasion of getting all nine-eleveny about this crap. - fauxXenophanes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6spin, baby, spin
- zouhair, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14ASS : "We saved you from terrorist"
HOLE : "Just STFU nothing happened"
ASS : "See, we saved your ass"
get it now? :) - kezekiel, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Can you explain to me how you get from "the US pressured the British to move a week early" goes to "this war on terror is mostly propaganda?" It's as if radical Muslims aren't really out there blowing the crap out of the planet, no... it's all Carl Rove. Let's not be such tards in our zeal to question authority that we explain away the fact that there are thousands of radical Muslims that would like to sever your heads from their necks.
- zaphodfl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@exsst
Books and Magazines was a bit stupid... I think alot of the stuff is a bit stupid... But you using the 'f' word 6 times in a post tells me that I'm not the one who needs to wise up. - Suplyndmnd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You have no idea how the blackmarket for passports work, do you?
- DrVital, on 10/12/2007, -17/+21In case you're still wondering about the timing of all this, it was pretty clearly done to try and blunt the impact of the Lieberman defeat in Connecticut. Even Lieberman himself has jumped on-message for this one:
Here's a quote from the Washington Post:
'After British officials disclosed they had thwarted a terrorist airline bombing plot on Thursday, Lieberman warned that Lamont's call for a phased withdrawal of troops from Iraq would be "taken as a tremendous victory" by terrorists.' - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12I could go get a new passport and an airline ticket by this time tomorrow
- almir, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15I remember when first news about this released, they said that suspected terrorists were almost in the planes when they caught them.
Day after that news were saying that they should have a "probe" in 2 days.
Come on people, we are not blind.
Why, for God sake, they always stop possible trerrorists attacks just when situation is that George and Blair desperately need something to defend them from some actual evil they are doing ?
I definitelly know the answer !
They lie - as they always do. - DocDEB, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Our fearless leaders can not pass up an opportunity to remind us all why we need them and why we need to give up more of our liberty so we can be safe in their loving embrace. The war in Iraq isn't going so good. It's looking like all of the Republicans will be running away from GW as fast as they can in attempt to save their own hides in November. The Middle East is now a simmering kettle of ***** that we have less influence in day buy day. So why not play up the FUD to try and get a bounce in the polls. They might even get enough of a bounce to go and ask Congress for more power to deal with the clear and present danger. Or maybe just bypass the legal stuff with a few presidential directives.
Freedom is NOT a government telling us that they are keeping us safe but we really can't have all those messy liberties and nasty checks and balances. Freedom requires vigilance for threats to that freedom both external and INTERNAL.
Or maybe I'm just full of crap since I just finished reading V for Vendetta again. -
