- Ridgeliner7, on 07/02/2008, -11/+41McCain then collected himself and apologized for his initial reaction.
"I kind of reacted the way I did because I have a reluctance to talk about my experiences," he said, noting that he has huge admiration for the "heroes" who served with him in the POW camp and said the experience taught him to love the U.S. because he missed it so much.
"I am always reluctant to talk about these things," McCain said.
Asked about one of his former jailors from the notorious Hanoi Hilton who has now endorsed his candidacy for President, McCain chuckled.
"Yeah, I saw that," he said. "He also said that he and I used to have these nice, long philosophical chats. The ones that I recall is, confess or else." - Carv, on 07/03/2008, -7/+31Can't wait to see him debate Obama. He's going to look foolish, angry, or both.
- BeefBaron, on 07/04/2008, -7/+30Just because someone gets captured doesn't make them a hero.
The definition of hero has become so lax that the politicians label every armed forces employee a hero. - esidahi, on 07/03/2008, -20/+41Oh feel sorry for McBush, he was a POW and his son's were in the war so that is a qualification to be president. Give me a fricking break. This is one of the reasons why i'll be changing my party in Nov.
Country before party
Obama '08 - mentallyinhell, on 07/03/2008, -6/+25America haters? Has your vocabulary been trapped in the third grade?
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -3/+19But McCain and his campaign have still found a way to remind voters with some regularity of his 5 1/2 years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and his family's long tradition of military service.
On Wednesday, his campaign expanded the reach of his first major television ad of the general election campaign — a commercial where McCain speaks directly to the camera about being shot down in Vietnam and his years of captivity. - toddcat, on 07/03/2008, -15/+28A guy with this temper should have control over sensitive decisions regarding the peace of the world?
- StabmasterArson, on 07/03/2008, -4/+17I wonder how he'd answer the phone at 3:00 am...
- CaptainWeasel, on 07/03/2008, -9/+22MCCAIN SMASH
- tjmb9, on 07/03/2008, -1/+14You certainly don't SOUND like an insane person...
- IphtashuFitz, on 07/04/2008, -2/+14True, but he did reject an offer to be released early because of his father. About 6 months after he was captured his father became commander of all U.S. forces in the Vietnam theater. The NVA offered to release him for propaganda purposes but he refused unless all prisoners taken before him were also released. As a result his imprisonment lasted 5 1/2 years instead of just 1/2 a year.
Considering that he broke two legs & an arm when his plane was shot down, the people who found him beat him mercilessly (including crushing a shoulder and bayoneting him) before turning him over to the NVA, who then decided to "interrogate" him more rather than provide reasonable medical care, and some prisoners who initially took care of him didn't expect him to survive more than a week, I could certainly see him choosing to be released rather than face more hardship with his captors.
For all that, and opting to remain with his fellow prisoners, I consider him a war hero. Do I consider that enough for him to be President? No. But I still consider him a war hero. - glimp7, on 07/03/2008, -11/+23Obama has never shown extreme, negative emotion like McCain (and Bush) has. I rest my case.
- birdly, on 07/04/2008, -1/+12"WHO THE ***** IS CALLING SO LATE?"
- Kohaxx, on 07/03/2008, -5/+16Don't make McCain angry, you wouldn't like McCain when he's angry.
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -12/+21Stomping his feet like a little girl.
- ZenMojo, on 07/04/2008, -2/+11I hate talking about it. Unless I'm on video and the Medal of Honor soundtrack (no *****, it actually happened) is playing illegally in the background.
- renegadeafk, on 07/03/2008, -2/+10BUT MOOOM, I WANT IRAN NOOOW!
- papastout, on 07/03/2008, -3/+10My my my, aren't we the high and mighty one.
- neognostic, on 07/03/2008, -9/+16Are you on medication?
- jstohler, on 07/03/2008, -8/+15BS. McCain talks about his and his son's service all the time, he just always makes a point of saying "I hate talking about this..."
Come convention time, it'll be every word out of his mouth. - OUberLord, on 07/03/2008, -4/+10How? The journalist didn't ask about his POW experience; she asked about his Vietnam experience. Not to mention that it is a valid question.
- WasabiBomb, on 07/03/2008, -3/+8I can't wait 'til McCain shows some of his "passion" in front of the public and people realize he's a major nutbar. You know it's comin'.
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -9/+14Are they walking freely through dangerous areas without protection too?
- OUberLord, on 07/03/2008, -3/+8It's called campaigning and is expected while doing so. Not to mention that it's a legitimate question that he should be prepared to answer by now.
- SilverBack101, on 07/04/2008, -2/+7McCain SMASH! Raaawr!! O_o
- BananaGrabber, on 07/04/2008, -2/+7uh, did he ever say being a pow makes him qualified to be president, in the first place?
- jstohler, on 07/03/2008, -3/+8Don't forget "the button."
- Iztikeit, on 07/04/2008, -9/+14Nice way to bring up 5 years of torture. McCain's entire platform isn't his military service. He's probably tired of hearing about Vietnam. Wouldn't you be? He only mentions his military service because EVERY ONE ELSE WOULD DO THE SAME. If Obama had military experience he'd be singing the same damn tune. Let's try to be fair, not biased idiots.
- gryphon50, on 07/04/2008, -1/+6he is well-known for incidents in which he cursed at people on the senate floor. He has really offended many of his colleagues.
- Fullvinyl, on 07/04/2008, -6/+11I can sense a digging-down for this, but you're absolutely right. I'm sorry, but the dickweed MP blocking the road to the commissary that hasn't seen action since getting his ass kicked with those "American Gladiator"-style foam-padded sticks in boot camp is not a ***** hero. Nor is the fat son of a bitch that sits behind me eating McDonald's all day that sat on ass in Texas for his entire enlistment and is thick as *****.
On subject, yes, McCain got ***** up and suffered for the country. No, the "gooks", as he so lovingly calls them, did not imbue him with executive experience. - spawnfree, on 07/04/2008, -2/+6so when someone questions you do you explain or do you get angry that someone dared to question you.
charles manson has human feelings and emotions, its the conditioned bias, mental scars and psychosis we have to watch out for. - OUberLord, on 07/03/2008, -2/+6He could also possibly become visibly angry when the moderator asks him questions.
- inactive, on 07/04/2008, -11/+15You people are *****. It's okay for everyone to get up in arms over Obama's lapel pin questions being beaten to death, to the point Obama had to wear one while he addressed the nation on his patriotism, yet a man who actually spent a couple years in a ***** POW camp can't get pissed when constantly badgered that his time in that camp means nothing......
I'd choose any vet over the likes of Obama any day. - BossKey, on 07/04/2008, -2/+6McCain no like Iran. MCCAIN SMASH!!!
- Risingashes, on 07/04/2008, -0/+4I would say that any serviceman or woman serving in the defense of their own land or for that of an ally would qualify for being a hero.
To qualify as a hero you must look at a person's intent, not at the result. Someone who runs in to a burning building to steal some things, picks up what they thought was a bag of groceries, and later finds out that they were carrying a small child is not a hero- someone who is about to pick up the groceries and instead chooses to pick up a child is a hero- someone who runs in to a burning building to save someone and accidentally picks up a bag of groceries that they thought was a small child is a hero.
That said, serving in a war shouldn't be a prerequisite for being a president, and serving in the army gives next to no relevant experience for being the commander-in-chief. - spgass, on 07/04/2008, -1/+5I honestly don't think he's basing his run for the presidency primarily on his Viet Nam experience. He's been in the Senate for a long time and has worked with both parties more than Obama has. I wish people would focus more on the issues.
- Sil369, on 07/04/2008, -1/+5He was against the recent ruling that Guantanomo Bay detainees have a right to a trail. I'd like to see a prisoner released from there (who turned out to be innocent), run for the presidency in his/her country of origin. I wonder how that could work out since it's sort of the same of what McCain did. (Former detainee = a hero?)
- richardstaboner, on 07/04/2008, -0/+4I'll believe it when I see it. I agree with Carv, this crazy old nuts going to lose his cool.
- vanguardanon, on 07/04/2008, -5/+9They have been going after McCain with the anger issue since at least 2000. I didn't believe it then (when I was pro-McCain) and so I feel like there is a good chance it's BS now.
The next time they do a story on him getting angry they better have some video because this BS is getting old. I don't even like him but guy is getting swift boated. They just say the same stuff over and over again until it's considered truth.
Video or STFU - graysilver, on 07/03/2008, -11/+14Surprise. Surprise.
- ZenMojo, on 07/04/2008, -1/+4Why would Rupert Murdoch's paper buy off its entire staff and then write this article? Clearly it's an attempt at providing even-handed coverage.
- ihatea1sauce, on 07/04/2008, -6/+9I dislike McCain, but this has got to be the worst "article" I've ever read. It's less than ten sentences for ***** sake. Does digg really get off on every little smear they can find on a candidate that's less popular? Front page material?
I'm never coming to digg again. I'll get my "news" elsewhere. - richardstaboner, on 07/04/2008, -1/+4And by your logic, PTSD makes an angry hot-headed man even MORE ANGRY! Just what the world needs.
- peaceninja, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3if obama was 20 years older and mccain was 20 years younger, i dont think things would be very different
- NSResponder, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3"I believe I am the only truly moderate in America as I have respect for both men. "
Funny, I know many moderates who hold them both in considerable contempt.
-jcr - gryphon50, on 07/04/2008, -1/+4it is absolutely a valid question. Not only do I think it didn't prepare him for the presidency, I think it has IMPAIRED him for the presidency. Because every time I turn around, I hear about him wigging out on someone again.
- EarlOfLade, on 07/04/2008, -5/+8So, he was a failure who lost a 20-30 million dollar airplane and now we do not know if he is affected by the Stockholm Syndrome. He should not have security clearance for sale of hot dogs, much less become a president. The man is a security risk of epic proportions.
- CosmicH, on 07/04/2008, -4/+7If anything it's ***** with his mind even more. I don't understand why his service/torture time somehow gives him more credibility.
- jjacksonRIAB, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3False dichotomy?
I'm sorry, where was I defending Obama or saying I plan to choose him? I descend directly from a long line of military people, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and still I say military service is irrelevant. The President only approves operations. His staffers suggest the appropriate course of action.
By the way, I *am* in charge. Of myself.
You don't need leaders when you take responsibility for your own decisions, and I'm glad I'm not in charge of people like you. I hate changing diapers. -
