- Albionshores, on 10/11/2007, -4/+51This dances all over the constitution. I thought NSPD51 was for a future event. They needed it to authorize what they wrote back then. And sickeningly it works retrospectively.
This is America and an unprincipled vice president is manoeuvring around laws which prevent torture.
IMPEACH. - spinchange, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24As reported in the Washington Post, this top secret document was constructed primarily by Cheney's lawyers, with the aid of some Justice Dept staff. Gonzales was privy to the meetings & document, etc. Outside of this limited and tight inner circle, no one - not Colin Powell, the then Sec. of State, or Condi Rice, the then National Security advisor - knew about this official legal guidance that led to the President's "Unlawful Combatant/ Military Tribunal" Executive Order until two years later.
- kethraal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Impeachment's a good start...
1) IMPEACH.
2) CONVICT (treason)
3) EXECUTE - feckineejit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11As a resident alien I am constantly worried about this hyper-nationalistic rhetoric. This country is not the same country it was ten years ago.
- idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11You are what is wrong with America. Go fix yourself.
- thehomeskillet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Gonzales won't account for his actions. He bailed out on a press conference today because of 50 or so protesters (of which one of them was myself).
- SuperCujo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Seeya then.
- zweben, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I don't, but I suspect that the government doesn't really care.
- cheesehead, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Hopefully this treatment will still be in effect when it's Cheney's turn to come clean about his connections to 911 and war profiteering.
- lhcj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Whatever our government wants to define... goes both ways. Do you really want our guys treated this way ? Remember Vietnam ?
- tazx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7The USA is officially a nation that engages in torture. Welcome to the club of 3rd world banana dictatorships.
- BelXul, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Get your torches and pitchforks. It's time to put that madman's monster out of it's misery.
- spod111, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6There is so much wrong with this new policy of a civilised western country indulging in sanctioned torture:
1. It is horribly immoral, for such a bible bashing bunch I don't know how the administration can reconcile such behaviour with their religion, would Jesus have condoned torture?
2. It doesn't work - many studies have shown people will say anything that will get the torture to stop.
3. It is *great* encouragement to the enemy. In previous wars (with some exceptions I guess) the enemy had to *make up* stories about mistreatment to incense the people to fight. In this case, Al Quaeda, etc. don't have to make anything up - they just repeat what the press is reporting, imagine what effect this has on encouraging young people to join the fight - it is the best marketing campaign the terrorists could have wished for
4. It is demoralising for us - for the first time, as far as I am concerned, I don't feel we are the good guys any more. In TV, movies, etc. "we" have always been the good guys that stuck to the high moral ground, the Geneva convention and the rule of law whether or not it was disadvantageous at the time, now we are employing all the tactics of the bad guys.
The fact that these legal guys are trying to argue that it might be OK because it doesn't *really* hurt is just appalling. - garths, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9As far as I know there is no pain associated with death.
Of course I'm not sure of that. - npathak, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6This is really sad... I have been an alien resident in this country for the last two and a half years and before the Bush administration America had a really good international image of being the champion of democracy and human rights. All it took was one administration to ruin that reputation. Say what you will about the whole immigration crap but you have to admit that there is a damn good reason why ppl want to come to the United States. After being in this country I still believe that the ppl are genuinely nice and do not support the abuse of power that is being promoted by the Bush administration. All this country needs is a change in power (which is right arnd the corner) and hopefully things will be right again.
- snerfu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Whatever they tell those guys to make them assume stress positions all day surely has to be threat of torture. Why else would someone comply with standing in a weird position like that? If you were a detainee and you just refused to do any of that, I am not sure how they could force them to do that without these threats.
- weebit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5how in-human can you be. They treat their dogs better than that.
- micromause, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Bye bye.
- hakkamacher, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7.. and lawyers wonder why they get a bad rap?
It's amazing how low this administration has brought the United States. - faskippy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Note: In regards to your last sentence...That depends on who takes his place.
- hakkamacher, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7.. and lawyers wonder why they get a bad rap?
It's amazing how low this administration has brought the United States. - micromause, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You'll care one day. Oh bet your life on it.
- hiphoc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You know we are all must take responsibility here. What would have happened in 1800's if our citizens knew that the Fed's were torturing people. People have to know they can say, not in my name. First society has to be corrupted and demoralized. Ben Franklin said that "Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters." Millions of people are turning a blind eye to this. But we here on digg can keep pushing these stories. This country deserves the government we have. Until holy ***** starts being raised, we do not deserve better.
As an aside, Ron Paul was on Fox yesterday saying that a great form of protest that is in the spirit of MLK and Gahndi is to stop paying taxes. Non violent. But he also said be prepared for the repercussions. I put exempt on my tax form. I dont care anymore, I have to do something. These ***** are not getting one dime of my money to kill and torture people. NOT IN MY NAME - smokecheck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Welcome to the 4th reich. Alex Jones has documented that Gonzo has memo'd kids can be tortured with vice grips on their sexual organs whilst their parents watch. This is written. Our country is suppose to be a republic NOT A DEMOCRACY !!
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"No matter, it later asserts that laws or treaties forbidding torture don't apply to the President anyways"
Little wonder, he's been torturing us for six and a half years now :p - williamdyer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The people running the government have no shame. The only effective way to stop them is through complete humiliation - a takedown and total destruction of their professional and personal lives.
- Bulletman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1you don't need to have a salt covered bat taken to your head to be tortured. maybe the gentleman that wrote this should have these things done to him, and then we could time how long it takes him to write a paper called, "Why torture sucks"
- flaterates, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Leave.
- wishninja, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I look at the people around me I know voted for bush. My brother, my father, there is a guy at work that still has bush '04 stickers on his truck. It is hard to respect them and forgive them for what they have done. You might blame bush but look around 26% still support him and he won an election. Bush didn't lie he told everyone what kind of person he was, I was not surprised they do not seem to be, I believe he represents the will of these people.
- koreth, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Wonderful! I'm sure these revelations will cause the Democrats, bulwarks against tyranny, to hold another hearing or two and strongly denounce the administration. Maybe they'll even write a threatening letter!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -14/+6im in ur countriez torturin ur dudez
- turnthepage, on 10/11/2007, -22/+2If I see another Cheney article on the frontpage...I'll make like a tree and leave.
- Aynatix, on 10/11/2007, -25/+3I dont care...
