- Noah0504, on 10/12/2007, -51/+139It was a horrible choice of words. I have no problem with Kerry trying to be funny, but I don't feel bad for him. He's also making it worse for himself and the Democrats for not just manning up and just apologizing.
- blapierre, on 10/12/2007, -62/+146Funny that Kerry did worse in college than Bush then tries to bag on Bush.
I think they are both idiots. - cbasst, on 10/12/2007, -14/+90The Comment was referring to the fact that if you dont study, you will make the same mistake bush did, and got stuck in iraq with no stratagey.
What the world percieved it was was he was saying only knuckleheads get stuck in the armed forces.
Kerry just didn't realize what he was saying until he was too late.
Not a botched joke, Kerry took a potshot at bush, but he did not think it over, and it came out wrong.
I Still think Kerry is a knucklehead though... - theConstruct, on 10/12/2007, -37/+110@Noah0504:
He /has/ apologized. Twice:
Here:
IMUS: Why not apologize for the misunderstanding?
KERRY: I did, I said it was a botched joke, of course I’m sorry about a botched joke.
http://thinkprogress.org/2006/11/01/kerry-msnbc-apologize/
and here:
I sincerely regret that my words were misinterpreted to wrongly imply anything negative about those in uniform, and I personally apologize to any service member, family member, or American who was offended.

(Unrelated: why does "manning up" sound so particularly unmanly?) - appleann1, on 10/12/2007, -33/+72Spin it any way you want, it is what it is.
- gendjinn, on 10/12/2007, -11/+46Would have been better off going with Chris Rock.
"Don't do drugs you won't grow up to be anything."
"I could be president!" - sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -31/+62So Bush thinks Kerry should apologize for the joke? Ok, I can see that. Now can Bush apologize for sending these guys to fight a worthless war? Can Bush apologize for sending men to die for nothing? Can Bush apologize for putting literally hundreds of thousands of lives in danger with no real plan?
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -12/+43The joke makes a lot more sense if you listen to Kerry's FIVE OTHER COMMENTS about Bush in that same speech.
The only people who actually point out what was really going on are the Associated Press and no one wants to show the entire video. - Dopamini, on 10/12/2007, -17/+46WHY ARE WE ***** TALKING ABOUT THIS?
Everyone in Washington has their heads up their asses and their dicks in their hands, fellating the American public with this kind of *****. Are we ever going to talk about real issues? - GeneralFailure0, on 10/12/2007, -18/+45@breakpoint25
Statements like that are why party politics are so ***** up. You say don't vote for democrats, but why? Why would you ever presume to tell someone how to vote, but then give no supporting arguments to explain why you feel this way? And how can you be sure you wouldn't vote the democrat in certain situations? You can't just vote along party lines, you should vote for the individual who you think is best suited to represent you. I generally favor liberal candidates, but if I thought the Republican candidate would better represent me in office, I would absolutely vote Republican. - DanThePainter, on 10/12/2007, -13/+36Hey flicknut;
How do you know that a poster is not over in Iraq? Our soldiers have Internet access, you know. - Koosebane, on 10/12/2007, -33/+54Say, flicknut.
Do you support your local police? How about your local fire department? Emergency rescue?
Do you volunteer for any of those services? If not, I'm wondering why.
You obviously believe one should volunteer for any civil service one supports. - CandidateZero, on 10/12/2007, -12/+31@ Noah
Manning up? He didn't do what people are demanding he apologize for. If you apologize for something you didn't do, it's equivalent to admitting you did it.
"Apologize for punching me in the face!" / "But I didn't punch you in the fa-" / "Hey! Apologize right now!" / "I'm sorry for punching you in the face." / "Ah ha! So it was you!" - Koosebane, on 10/12/2007, -14/+33Pffffft.
Don't look now, but Kerry is getting his events canceled over this shoe sole sampler.
The rationalizations? Rather embarrassing. - sparkie, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25hahahahah That was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Thanks thefoxtrot
The picture makes perfect sense in the context of his remark. - byerspc, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29I think he just let slip out what he actually thinks.
- mushimonster, on 10/12/2007, -25/+44Thank you John ... for helping the GOP
- aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24Thats what I don't understand, Why are the republicans attacking him over this.
Kerry has expressed an intent to run for president again, Nothing could be better for the republicans, Kerry was a TERRIBLE candidate, As someone who voted for him, I doubt anyone voted for him because he would make a good president, just because he wasn't bush, If he won the nomination, he would say things like this, and they could bring it up, and annihilate him. They want him to win the nomination, Much more than they want Hillary or some other competent political opponent. - anastrophe, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24don't forget: bush's GPA at Yale was higher than Kerry's. try and wrap your brain around that little chestnut. i guess kerry, therefore, was one of those who didn't make the most of his education, didn't make the effort to be smart, so he got stuck in vietnam.
by his twisted logic. - cmw72, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22"I stand corrected. However, let's not forget that he originally refused to issue an apology, but I suppose he apologized nonetheless."
Ahhh ... I get it ...Flip Flopper right?
Is nothing good enough for you people? - geekee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21The funny part is when the criticize Fox News. Fox News is a hell of a lot less biased than Digg news.
- LarianLeQuella, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19"Because the students like insults about the US military?" Actually, a lot of the university students I know get indoctrinated by military hating professors to think o military members as just a bunch of babykillers and mindless drones. I'm sure they laughed because no matter how it was delivered, they thought it was funny (insulting Bush or the Military).
Once I retire from the AF, I'm moving to New Zealand, and the rest of you can have this cess pool of a mess. - Clark3934, on 10/12/2007, -9/+24The students got the joke? Ever heard of nervous laughter? How about the laugh that comes with the "I can't believe he just said that".
Quit trying to rationalize what he said. He made a mistake, quite an untactful statement. Get over it. - Xeiliex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Yes, we do, And a heck of a lot of us read digg.
However I'm am not in iraq right now. - anastrophe, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20it really should be repeated in every comment, because this BS backtracking on what he ACTUALLY said is just that - BS backtracking:
“Education, if you make the most of it, you study hard and do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”
John F. Kerry - lordTalus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21Let's see...Kerry talking to a bunch of liberal students...They laugh, which means they think like Kerry...Liberals think alike, and they don't like the military which is why they fight to reduce the size of the military and cut funding every chance they get.
This was not a joke. Kerry has a history of comparing our armed forces to barbaric rapists..."Terrorizing women and children..." He panicked.
But...What the hell do I know??? I think we should get back to bashing a radio host. - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18I love how Kerry now apologized, not for what he said, but that his words were misrepresented and was sorry is anyone was offended.
- deanmeek, on 10/12/2007, -19/+30Kerry saying that he left out the word "us" does not not make what he said into a joke. Someone explain it to me.
He has his Vietnam mentality of when there was a GI deferment if a person was going to college. Thus, dumb troops who could not take advantage of the situation. I believe this is what still clouds Kerry's view of our troops. He can't acknowledge that over 95% have high school diplomas and they are all volunteer.
If you add the supposedly left out "us" word, then is the joke supposed to mean that if you don't study hard and make yourself smarter you get elected President of the United States and you send the troops to get stuck in Iraq. That's funny? To who? - anastrophe, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18it's a volunteer military. nobody, smart or dumb, gets "stuck" in iraq. i guess kerry thinks there's still a draft?
the only draft is between kerry's ears. - Koosebane, on 10/12/2007, -32/+43HA! Chickenhawk? What a woefully dim little gem of intellectual futility you've managed to recite all on your own.
I may think you're a rabid freak who parrots the same tired questions and knee jerk insults every other rabid freak on the intarweb babbles, but that doesn't make me a chickenhawk.
I'm forty seven years old and have done my time. Have you?
And your claims of 'no shortage of civil servants' is utter horse *****. Serve your country or STFU, you keening little pissant. - fani, on 10/12/2007, -17/+28Did all the students laugh ?
Kerry is an idiot and he made a stupid remark. He should be ashamed of himself. - xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16They should have troops speak out for what Kerry said, not all the babbling idiot guests. Man I hate the news.
- blurri, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Just my two cents: Every time I've heard or read Kerry say something he speaks succinctly. If he had meant it as a joke you would've heard a joke. Personally, I wasn't laughing.
- vbbx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Why didn't we get the joke ... uuummm YouTube, and most of the 99% who didn't get the joke can read.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLuMWiQ6r2o&eurl=
Democrats, your mask fell off, Mr Kerry, here is a news flash just for you, you voted for the Iraq war, you voted to send the troops into battle there, you voted to oust Saddam Hussein, you do not get off the hook, no matter how hard you try. Hindsight does not substitute for wisdom, and second guessing is not a strategy.
Kerry has apologized for being an anti-war leftists who hates the military. Didn't say he was ashamed of it, just sorry you heard it. Didn't mean to let the world know that Democrats hate the troops and hate the war, sorry, he really didn't mean to screw up the Democrat strategy so bad. - jjb123, on 10/12/2007, -12/+22How are republicans stupid because of this, Kerry is a democrat?
- crombenevolant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10All of this makes me wonder what our country would be like if politicians actually spoke on what their beliefs were, and what they wanted to do instead of just trashing their opponents and their opponents party?
Of course if a politician actually thought about an issue and spoke about their actual personal opinions it would create a paradox and Washington would wink out of existence, but especially in the case of this election, it would be interesting to see candidates actually talk about themselves instead of just mud slinging..... - RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18So Kerry's joke is that if you study hard you won't make a mistake about war time policy?
What about Bush's Yale education + Harvard MBA?
Thank goodness Kerry is not our President - just think about what a bad "Joke" about North Korea could cost us. - mannymix03, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16laughing in the background?, where was he speaking, what if was talking to a prep school, where none of them would ever join the army, and they thought it was funny. Sorry kerry but that joke was distasteful, and honestly you never meant the president, you meant all the soldiers. You should die
- pmblair, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17Why is every political digg i see, a democratic propaganda pamphlet.
- iLemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It is absolutely hilarious to see this happen to a liberal. I see liberals do this hypersensitive bs to conservatives every election year. What is really fun is watching Chris Matthews examine the situation as if it is some new way of smearing your opponent and republicans just came up with it.
- tyho, on 10/12/2007, -13/+21John Kerry: The best friend a Republican can have.
Hopefully all you, "I got the joke" folks can convince him to continue delivering this November Gift to the GOP.
Also good news for Hillary as Kerry's hopes for 2008 are pretty much toast now. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -44/+52Thank you, John Kerry, for reminding me and the rest of America what an evil alternative you and your party represent for this country:
“Education, if you make the most of it, you study hard and do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”
John F. Kerry - dluv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Kerry was talking about soldiers, not Bush and everyone knows it. I can give you the name of two professors at Seattle University's Business school who made the same generalization as Kerry, just two years ago.
- anastrophe, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14yeah, the moonbats *never* get bent out of shape. uh huh.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10You shouldn't denigrate your own family members for their service to our country. The military requires highly technical skills. The days of being a "grunt" were back in the 70s.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@rdotson
I'm betting that it will be fun at Thanksgiving with your family this year. Do they know what an enormous assbag you are? Bad enough you look down your nose at the rest of the military but to go after a member of your own family is just disgusting. I hope you end up at Denny's munching a Superbird while your family gets together and fails to notice your absence. - crombenevolant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Exactly. It was mud slinging plain and simple. It just so happened that he got some mud on innocent bystanders in the process. Classic negative politics in the US....
- ALCM, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12"I was for the joke BEFORE I was against it!"
-John F'n Kerry, 2006 - StephenChow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I think it was a pity laugh, it was "meh" at best.
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The students thought Kerry's joke was funny in the interpretation for which he was criticized. Don't do well in school, you'll end up a soldier in Iraq. That's what the students were laughing at, because that hits home for them. Knock off with the spin Daiken.
