- inactive, on 11/02/2008, -10/+111I'm so shocked the McCain campaign is going even more negative.
And by "shocked" I mean "not shocked at all." - col381, on 11/02/2008, -6/+64The most disgusting thing about this whole election effort is that the Republicans are 'supposed' to represent us - yet all they have done for this entire campaign is mislead and lie. I know this is nothing new, but you have to ask two questions 1. 'why the hell does anybody at all vote for a party like this (let alone a sizable portion of the population)?' and 'why do we tolerate this as a society - is this the democracy/society we want? one where we are lied to as a matter of course?'.
The most cliched counter will always be that 'both' sides engage in these tactics, but this is clearly not the full story. Ok there have been infractions on both sides but relatively speaking the democrats have run (and traditionally run) a generally 'clean' campaign, wheras the republicans (particularly this election) have been shocking in the brazeness of their lies.
The question is - what do we do to fix this? Anybody?
- Rutabaga64, on 11/02/2008, -7/+63This is simply further proof that the whole "Country First" thing is a blatant lie.
It's obviously "John McCain First." Everything else, especially the truth, runs a very distant second.
It's shameful. - mdavidl, on 11/02/2008, -5/+43Someone should check between McCain's ears to see how much brain is left. He's an old man, so am I, 5 years his senior and the bats start running into one another up in the old belfry. This isn't the John McCain I voted for years ago, but then, maybe it was and he fooled us all. Whatever you do, vote, urge your friends and neighbors to vote against this organization that has become a pustule on the butt of American politics.
- applepro, on 11/02/2008, -5/+41Pathetic. Do you really want to win like this?
Apparently he does, which shows you that he's a despicable actor more than a "maverick". - rento, on 11/02/2008, -8/+38I think this has gone so far he needs a legal injunction. Stop Mc Cain and his utter idiotic campaign team from spreading ***** and fear.
- SheilaNoya, on 11/02/2008, -6/+35McCain has shown us what the Republicans have to offer - more lies, more hatred, and more fear.
We've already had enough of this crap during the last 8 years. I just find it amazing that McCain's supporters actually thrive on this divisive crap and want 4 more years of it.
What the hell has happened to America? We need to start moving in a new direction or we're going to implode from self-inlicted wounds. - CaptDD, on 11/02/2008, -5/+26Now the citizens of the US see the "dark side" of the Rep. Party;
(something the rest of the World has had to live with for the last 8 years!):
-the cheap shots,
-the fear promotion
-the win at any cost,
-no lie too big
-no fairness
-guilt by association
-the hate promotion
Our country has become a Country ruled by Bullies and that needs changing! - Awesomecat, on 11/02/2008, -5/+24This is good! Bring the hate and racism to the light and let everyone see their behavior for what it is. Then never let that light stop shining.
- JenniferInMO, on 11/02/2008, -5/+24These people don't play well with others. Perhaps we should send them home?
- lmrgreen, on 11/02/2008, -3/+22No legal injunction needed: just us getting out the vote. After Nov 5, McCain/Palin only real success of this campaign will be revealed to be how FAST they fade into the background
- DriftAway, on 11/02/2008, -1/+18For some reason, this is one hell of an inspiring comment.
- toetagger, on 11/02/2008, -4/+19Same methods, same results. Good luck with that.
- marisyl, on 11/02/2008, -5/+20Aren't there libel and slander laws in this country?
- DriftAway, on 11/02/2008, -6/+21It's not only in the Presidential race. In the senate race here in NC, Democrat Kay Hagen is suing Republican Beverly Purdue for Libel and Defamation because of her anti-atheist adds against her. And those aren't even the worst ones. Here's a link to a story on it, and you can probably youtube some of the adds.
- netgui68, on 11/02/2008, -3/+18My friends we are going to run a clean race! My friends you are all Joe the plumbers. Joe the plumber is not a licensed plumber, the business he supposedly wants to buy does not make over 250k...hmmm I guess John McCain's heros are habititual liars and John McCain thinks that is an American value one should be proud of..personally I do not find anything American or Christian about lying. Mr. McCain what happen to your honor and maverickiness?
- MplsVala, on 11/02/2008, -3/+16Sadly, people are willing--even eager--to vote for authoritarians. Have a look at:
http://www.alternet.org/democracy/105669/it_is_now ... - cmost, on 11/02/2008, -7/+19Well, the Republicans don't have any real solutions to offer so they'll do what they do best: point their fingers, pass the blame, and sling mud. They'll play on the ignorant and uninformed; they'll stir up prejudice, fear, uncertainty and doubt and pray its enough to get them elected yet again. Never underestimating the stupidity of the American public...they just might succeed. I don't feel sorry for anyone who votes these jokers into office yet again.
- lmrgreen, on 11/02/2008, -3/+15Both parties are supposed to represent us, not just the repubs. But given that, we must understand that the real problem is that WE as citizens have chosen for the last several decades to let the political parties DECIDE what we as citizens want and need instead of WE THE PEOPLE telling them what we want and need. WE abandoned our God-given, Constitutional DUTY to be the LEADERS! We follow when WE should LEAD. We look to Washington to LEAD instead of looking to ourselves to set the agenda for our democracy. We trust so-called "leaders" to act in our best interests EVEN when we know they are not. We accept platitudes instead of facts and we do little to seek out the truth or fight the lies. Hopefully, with this election we are waking up!!!!
This is why, as a former Libertarian, then Republican, and a woman raised reading Ayn Rand (I read "Anthem" in fourth grade) I have cast my vote and lended my support to Barak Obama. I have been doing so, in one way or another, for nearly two years. Why? Because, everything in me SCREAMS! THIS is the path, the ONLY path, back to true democracy! And for you very far right-wingers who hold "Atlas Shrugged" in the same esteem as my Christian Bible: I believe Ayn would be turning over in her grave if she were to see the fascist state the US has evolved into.I believe her philosophy would have eventually led to "enlightened self interest" which takes her philosophy of egoism to the next level: ANYONE suffering in this world causes me pain and detracts from my ability to be the best I can be; therefore by helping those that are struggling, or have less than me, or are hurt and suffering, I am also helping myself".
In Barak Obama I see the natural outcome of this philosophy even if he doesn't see it himself. Barak Obama is "Atlas Shrugging" for the 21st century. John Galt decided to stick around and change the system from within, instead of going "outlaw"! - DriftAway, on 11/02/2008, -1/+12We are in the age of Karl Rove.
The republicans take what they know is going to be their biggest weakness and put it forth as their biggest attribute.
Country First.
Negative Campaign ads.
Tax Breaks
The "breath of fresh air" that is Sarah Palin's inexperience.
etc.
Then when the dems call them on it, it looks more like necessary retaliation than a legitimate attack (or rather, observance). - DangerCollie, on 11/02/2008, -0/+10I'm not sure an injunction is the right answer to this tactic. A better answer would be to giving the Democrats a veto-proof majority in Congress.
One thing the Republicans have done really well over the last eight years is to rouse the sleeping giant of the electorate. Many weren't that concerned about participating in elections because things were basically going pretty well. When only half the electorate votes, then a small but dependable voting block can magnify their influence. But when the whole country votes...80% in some districts...then they go back to being the 18-20% fringe they've always been.
I want to see the Republicans get crushed because I believe it's the only way they'll move away from the wingnuts in the party and adopt a more moderate platform. But that's unlikely and if the Democrats can avoid making the same mistakes of corruption and incompetence they might be in power a long, long time. - stormofswords, on 11/02/2008, -1/+11False dichotomy. Ask any user on digg and they'll tell you that huffingtonpost isn't an unbiased source. Fox viewers, however, will go to the grave saying that Fox is the ONLY unbiased news source in the MSM.
- DriftAway, on 11/02/2008, -2/+12Yes.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/10/30/politics ...
But I don't think Obama wants to sound like a whiner. When he wins after facing all this persecution and outright lies of and about him and his family that's going to make a much bigger statement about negative campaign ads then suing someone. - DriftAway, on 11/02/2008, -1/+10I don't really understand the meaning of the word 'diverse' in that sentence.
However, anyone who's seen the Family Guy episode where Lois runs for mayor knows why people still support McCain and the Republicans in general.
Key words.
Socialist.
Terrorist.
Muslim
The list goes on. That is all they hear. Honestly, if every voter in America did any research on both of the candidates Obama would win by forty points. - Maddoktor2, on 11/02/2008, -7/+16The next time you're in a crowded theater, shout "FIRE!!" at the top of your lungs.
When questioned by the authorities, simply state that you're a God-Fearing Republican practicing your right to free speech.
You'll be hailed as the greatest, most patriotic American since Joe The Plumber, and awarded with a medal, guaranteed.
Go ahead, try it! Make us proud! - richardparker01, on 11/02/2008, -1/+10I can personally vouch for the negative surge:
I just got robocalled on a Sunday morning with my family. To summarize the call: Obama's aunt is an illegal alien from Africa (they stressed Africa several times for racist suggestions), how can we trust Obama when he such a liar, blah blah. The sad part is my daughter answered the phone and had to hear this vile ***** before she handed the phone to me. Some PAC was responsible and they said the name so fast at the end I couldn't catch it. I literally felt dirty after hanging up the phone.
To stoop to these levels on behalf of a candidate and party is disgusting. Congratulations caller, I was planning on for voting our republican senator, but after this call I'm voting a straight democratic ticket. - 1310nm, on 11/02/2008, -2/+11There are tons of anti-Obama emails going around in the last week; much more so than before. Desperation?
- MindTrigger, on 11/02/2008, -1/+10I expect people who are going to run for*any* office in this country to be a decent, respectful human beings. If they can't do it while they are campaigning, they sure as hell aren't going to do it while in power. Running for office is no excuse for an 'anything goes' attitude.
Look at McCain. At the very least he has permanently destroyed his own good name by showing what a dishonorable sellout he has become. I used to respect this guy, but all of the ***** tactics he has employed during this race have made a mockery of his proud military service as well as anything he claims to have accomplished in government.
This is not the kind of person I want leading the country or representing me abroad. I hope it was all worth it to him. At his age, there isn't much he can do to restore his name. He's going to go down in the history books as a broken old man who gave up his honor for a shot at the presidency. - fishbeef33, on 11/02/2008, -2/+10So, does that mean you're admitting that FoxNews ISN'T a reputable, fair and balanced new source? That it's actually a partisan organization on par with a blog like Huffington Post that is up front about its affiliations? Wow, that's so refreshingly honest of you, thanks!
- ErickStevenson, on 11/02/2008, -2/+10I'm just wondering how they can get "more" negative? All they have been doing are negative campaigns... what else can they do? Get the KKK to campaign for them?
- DriftAway, on 11/02/2008, -3/+10Well what do you expect them to do when they're down? Hillary couldn't get too ugly with Barack, because she'd need his endorsement if she was the nominee, and vice-versa.
But as far as McCain and the R's go, of course they are going to keep pushing the envelope of what's acceptable until someone calls them on it. It hasn't happened yet so the next couple of days will only be worse.
In fact, their ads can be as outrageously disgustingly as they can possibly be now, because what is the worst that can happen?
The election is in two days (and 20 hours). They can call Obama a Nazi transvestite if they want to, but the votes will have been cast before anything can be done about it.
Then what, hope we get the majority and impeach McCain on his first day for libel and slander?
Hey, now that's an idea! - gridity, on 11/02/2008, -0/+7The difference is that Obama attacks McCain's positions or policies. McCain makes easily falsifiable character attacks - like the whole "lipstick on a pig" fiasco that McCain himself even admitted wasn't true.
- somebehemoth, on 11/02/2008, -0/+7You are confusing the race for Governor and the race for Elizabeth Dole's Senate seat. Elizabeth Dole is being sued by Hagan for Dole's reprehensible commercials. Beverly Perdue, a Democrat, is running for governor against Pat McCrory.
- r3vmixman, on 11/02/2008, -0/+7But the difference between Obama and McCain is all of Obama's attack ads against McCain are true.
- lulzitsadigg, on 11/02/2008, -0/+7Elections are on Tuesday, not tomorrow.
- roebeet, on 11/02/2008, -4/+11I'm in PA, and I'm getting robo-calls several times a day, now. They really don't understand how much of a negative effect this is having on the Republican Party. Getting non-human calls bashing "that one" and not even allowing me to hang up is really pissing me off. At least I could yell at someone, if there was actually a human being calling me.
There are usually a few reps at my polling place, and I'll make sure I tell them that the robo-calls made were a significant reason why I wasn't voting for their candidate. - Fivefeetunder, on 11/02/2008, -3/+10In 2000, McCain tried to pull the Republican Party out of the gutter, but instead his party dragged McCain deeper into the sewer, where he has made himself at home.
- DriftAway, on 11/02/2008, -4/+10I don't know about fading.
I see a Palin/Lieberman ticket in '12!
But seriously, (@rento) what's the point of any legal action now, with two days left. Make Obama look like he can't handle himself?
Now trying the heads of the McCain campaign for Libel/Slander/Defamation after they lose? That would be good. But I doubt they'll have time for it, what with the trials of Bush, Cheney, Rove, etc. :) - shmatt, on 11/02/2008, -4/+10you're clueless if you compare mccain's cheap shots to the relatively clean campaign run by Obama. Which you prove by resorting to racial insults
- cmost, on 11/02/2008, -3/+8Perhaps not, but at least Obama has a little decorum and dignity; he isn't using juvenile negative attacks to win this election. The McCain campaign seems to use nothing else. Could you possibly want more of the same? You need to wake up!!
- MindyB, on 11/02/2008, -2/+7John McCain has shown Americans what a coward he really is, he has caved into the Rovian Republican smear tactics like no other before him. He has no spine! How is anybody supposed to believe that a liar like him can ever bring America out of the quagmire it it in thanks for Bush. It is clear that all he is interested in is winning the election, he cares not about the American people or what we as a country are going through. A vote for McCain is a vote against the best interests of America!
Obama/Biden 08 - rossnyc, on 11/02/2008, -0/+5Desssperation! The stench reeks.
- pgoetz, on 11/02/2008, -1/+6"Digg was condemning McCain because some preacher who said the Holocaust was Gods punishment of the Jews had endorsed McCain. Obama has a racist hateful preacher for 20 years and he gets a free pass."
Um, no, you're COMPLETELY missing the point, which is hypocrisy. The Republicans made a big deal out of Rev. Wright, and then acted shocked when the Dems pointed out that McCain is endorsed by a raving premillenial dispensationalist looking forward to the complete extermination of the Jews some time, oh, this year ... or next. Diggers are opposed to hypocrisy, the very lifeblood of the modern Republican party. Maybe you should take a look at this:
http://digg.com/political_opinion/The_Republican_P ... - inactive, on 11/02/2008, -2/+6John Macbeth.
- jessehadden, on 11/02/2008, -0/+4Liberal? Liberal?!
There isn't a mainstream liberal party in America. In other civilized nations, the Democrats are what would pass for the conservative party. American politics are skewed very far to the right. - WaldoX, on 11/02/2008, -0/+4i have a feeling if mccain wins the stock market and usa economy will go down, if obama wins the stock market will remain steady or even head up and same with the economy.
- rdoger6424, on 11/02/2008, -5/+9So what if Obama's Kenyan? That means he's really good at running for office.
- Bozoar, on 11/02/2008, -6/+10John McCain is the most disgusting man in the country.
The most vitriol campaign I have ever seen. He talks of the others being terrorists, yet it’s his tactics that try to divide people and induce hate.
The man was a moron long before he got senile enough to think he could run for president. He was a moron in the Navy with only his dad’s clout to get him through. I can only imagine the reason he got shot down in Nam was because he was either sleeping during the “Evasive Maneuvers for SAM Missiles” class or just to stupid to understand it. Why does it take him 72 years to run for president? Because, he’s a slow learner.
I have never seen the top down theory work in the 30 years I’ve been watching. How can giving money to big corporations create jobs if no one has the money to buy their product? Simply stupid, unless you like the clout you get from your high power friends.
Only the ignorant could think this turd is going to represent their interests in America. - ThsGuyRightHere, on 11/02/2008, -1/+5You're still full of *****, just like the last time you said this. You didn't have facts to back yourself up then either.
