- drwaterside, on 08/27/2008, -2/+42These guys don't know when to shut up!!!!! They have been saying the same thing for the last 6 months and try to find issues where none exist.
CSPAN is definitely the way to go - jetboyterp, on 08/27/2008, -3/+37Agreed that C-SPAN is the best way to watch. I'm Republican (yeah, digg me down) but, especially given the circumstances, I wanted to watch both conventions. FOX News cut away from the keynote speech last night, minutes into it. CNN and MSNBC *shudder* had continued it....but all 3 major cable news networks just gabbed over most of the speakers.
I re-discovered C-SPAN during the week of Reagan's services and funeral. The cable news outlets just kept gabbin', while C-SPAN did the right thing and "shut up" and just let the cameras roll during somber moments.
Same with the State of the Union addresses... - meschief, on 08/26/2008, -4/+36CSPAN ...when elected Obama will use it to communicate to US without the MSM spin.
Great Music, No Comments, Just Convention!! Turn Off the Networks, hurt them where it counts, ratings and $$$ - tcbishop12, on 08/26/2008, -2/+29They really do need to shut up while the major speeches are being made.
But I read somewhere recently "Don't complain about the media. Become the media." That's becoming more of a reality this election year than ever before. Act as if what you post and blog and disseminate makes a difference. Because it does.
- bluevillage, on 08/27/2008, -1/+28C-Span is the only way to go.
- ndseifi, on 08/27/2008, -5/+18I particularly enjoy how despite the overwhelming evidence, some people think that national health insurance is in some bizarre way a breach of liberty.
There are no losers in a nationalised health insurance scheme. Get that into your thick, fat heads! - david76, on 08/27/2008, -0/+13It's sad the BBC has better coverage of our conventions than we do.
- humanerror, on 08/27/2008, -4/+17This message brought to you by AT&T
retractively-immune sponsors of the Democratic National Convention. - jmpeagle, on 08/27/2008, -7/+19the convention serves no purpose, the candidates have already been decided. This is just an excuse for self-aggrandizing.
- Shiftgood, on 08/27/2008, -5/+16nixfu
there still will be private health care if you choose to peruse it. You will still have the freedom to choose where you want to go. I promise, its a fact.
Now, understanding that.. what is your opinion? - Shiftgood, on 08/27/2008, -6/+16Ok. Mind if i give it a shot? Here is something that I didnt know that I think needs to be reported.
McCains plans to Tax Health Insurance. This decision will undoubtedly drive up the cost of already exorbitant health care prices. The cost of health care is expected to grow at a rate of 7% each year and in addition be taxed under McCain. These are almost completely new taxes that McCain is proposing, we are currently living almost tax free in this area. McCain offers a credit for around 2% and does very little to disguise the spike in health care costs. Expect companies to be hit hard to provide benefits for their employees, or to simply cease any benefits and let the employee foot the bill themselves.

Back to you in the booth Tim.
(howd i do?) - fluxion, on 08/27/2008, -1/+11PBS is doing a pretty decent job as well. still pundit talk in-between speeches but they actually seem aware of the fact that there's an important convention going on behind them.
- MediaWeasel, on 08/27/2008, -2/+12Agree totally. I'm sick to death of pundits ruining a perfectly good speech. I tune in to C-Span on my laptop, or the DNC live feed, and I'm happy.
If only more people would tune in to either of these two channels they'd not be distracted by the self interests and partisanship of the talking heads. Sure I'll tune in to the media for additional analysis, but the public are perfectly capable of making their own analyses of what's being said.
TCBishop in the first post is absolutely right. We are the media just as much as the overpaid, overblown, partisan egos of the MSM. Take back the truth. Blog, write to the MSM, make videos, write your own coverage and let the American public read and see that too. Give the public a better diet than the junk they're usually fed. Take back not only the White House but the press too. - richbleak, on 08/27/2008, -0/+10A neocon is someone who calls themselves a Republican but doesn't really believe in the core Republican values. They exploit Republican social issues (religion, gays, abortion) while doing nothing to further the fundamentals required to make conservative principals work (they lower taxes without a decrease in spending, unnecessary foreign entanglements, inaction on immigration). The most glaring attribute is the idea that invasion is somehow a better solution than diplomacy. The belief that we can remake the world at the barrel of a gun. This is not related to terrorism as they will have you believe; these plans were in place long before 9/11. Look up Project for the new American Century in which Cheney and his band of thieves lobbied for the invasion of Iraq years before taking power with the current administration. Cheney, Bush, and Rove are Neocons. Pat Buchanan and Chuck Hagel are conservatives.
- DTJunkie07, on 08/27/2008, -0/+10@jetboyterp
Ok Ill take this one. "What is a neo-con?" you ask? Well it is simple. Bush and Cheney are good examples of neo-cons which as you know stands for neo conservative which means "new era conservative." These people aren't your typical conservatives like Regan or any republicans in the late 70's to early 90's. In fact someone like you or me (who used to be a VERY conserbative leaning Republican) does not have a party anymore. It is sad really. These neo cons favor big government with as much power to the executive branch as possible. To accomplish that they put yes men in all the positions of government that would provide for a checks and balance system. They care more, MUCH more about big corporations than you, or me or the American people. They still cut taxes though.........if you are rich. They pay for the tax cuts for the rich by taking from the middle classes wallet...your wallet...my wallet. I am so sorry to tell you this but McCain is also a neo-con like Bush and Cheney and Carl Rove and Rush Limbo etc. I used to like McCain in the 2000 elections. He is not the maverick any more, unfortunately. He has voted with Bush over 90% of the time these past 8 years. I know this might be tough for you as it was for me but I plan on voting for Obama....now hold on..I know that is probably not what you were asking but I want a president who listens to me and cares about the American people and not big business. I want a president who can fix the economy (remember how good it was under Clinton?) and tax the rich like they were in the 90's and spare the poor. This election is not about the issues separating Repub vs Dem its about utter corruption vs. taking America in a better direction....up lol If you do not like Bush then sorry to say you wont like McCain. If you can not stomach voting for Obama then vote 3rd party. But DO NOT vote for McCain unless you are either A. rich B. on the board of a major company or C. a neo con

This video is a reason I like where the Democratic party is going because they believe in America. Watch it and post your thoughts. - marike, on 08/27/2008, -4/+13I agree 100% with the article. There is so much "analysis" that we can't even see the speeches. Carvel and Gergen make a big deal, stating that the speakers are not attacking the abysmal record of the past eight year and the more of the same of McCain, and when a speaker like Ed Rendell starts attacking, CNN cuts to more inane analysis.
Please CNN let us watch the convention. The republicans with have there chance next week. Livelong Democrats want to take it all in without the endless and often, skewed to the right, analysis.
I don't want to hear ***** about "liberal" media as the fix is in!!! - JustSomeDood, on 08/27/2008, -0/+9What really yanked my chain is when Pelosi, no fan of hers, was giving her speech and there was CNN and old prozac ridden Wolfe Blitzer talking during her speech from the middle of the convention floor. I find it very disrespectful that CNN is talking crap during speeches from the middle of the convention floor. It's like they are saying, we are more important than the people in office..maybe they are right.
Regardless of what you think about the conventions the MSM has gotten to big for it's britches. They talk more about conflicts within the parties, gaffes, and sound bites than they deal with real issues that are important to the American people.
It's C-Span for me. - roodammy44, on 08/27/2008, -2/+10Jon Stewart said it better than anyone ever will:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFQFB5YpDZE - Diggnabbit, on 08/27/2008, -0/+7"cause people to start buying their own policies" = force employers to drop them from their plans.
- akchrs, on 08/27/2008, -0/+7Kinda like Pelosi used C-Span when the Republicans wanted an up or down vote on drilling.
- viatracy, on 08/27/2008, -0/+7I have given up on MSM. Even PBS, which is disappointing to me. They talked right over Kucinich's remarks last night. CSPAN is it.
- CressCrowbits, on 08/27/2008, -0/+7You won't get dugg down for being a Republican. That's quite a different kettle of fish to being a Neocon.
- akchrs, on 08/27/2008, -0/+6and they make you use all caps.
- vat0r, on 08/27/2008, -2/+7Talking heads have to talk. You choose whether or not to listen to them. If you're to lazy to change the channel then you get what you deserve.
- fluxion, on 08/27/2008, -0/+5Fox News had pretty decent coverage the first day, though most of it was trying to expose some non-existent Hillary catastrophe.
the quality of coverage declined sharply yesterday, they basically talked over every speech except the 2 preceeding Hillary. Early on Oreilly had a little spiel about how Fox isnt right-wing, then they had special "breaking news" that Obama was "much more closer to Ayers than he admitted", but the only thing new "revelation" was that not only was Obama on the same board (as he had already stated), they both happened to have shown up for board meetings at overlapping times! what kind of board has meetings where their members are expected to be present at the same time? clearly some kind of terrorist plot.
hannity made sure to insert "hillary says mccain has a lifetime of experience and obama isnt ready" before and after every interview. for what little they did show of the convention, they made sure to cut-away when speeches were getting a little heated to interject why some small point was debatable, then immediately handed it off to more fair-and-balanced pundits to talk over the rest of it
THEN...after Hillary gives the speech of her life...when I, a firm Obama supporter who was a little ticked off about how Hillary squandered past opportunities to squash this mess, was so impressed i felt the need to sit there and clap like a dumbass as i sat alone in my living room, and after the DNC went completely crazy with applause and good will....
4/4 of their pundits go on to say how Hillary didn't do enough for Obama, that "quite frankly, im shocked she did so little", that (paraphrasing) "i think the obama camp is gonna be a little upset about this one". i mean what the bloody hell? they've seriously shat on every speech there....
these are the themes from my following of fox news coverage:
"blah blah...we dont know enough about michelle or obama personally"
*michelle gives a personal speech about herself and obama*
"well she didnt say enough crap about mccain...waste of time!"
"blah blah...hillary really needs to make sure her supporters are behind obama"
*hillary gives a speech that no hillary fan wouldnt be moved toward party unity by*
"blah blah...she didnt talk about how great obama was, obama's gonna be pissed"
yah im getting a bit long-winded here. but this is seriously what 2 days of coverage by fox looks like.
kinda fun to see the contrast though....want to see how great the convention is...change channel to cnn...want to see how much of a disaster it is....change channel to fox. - sultanica, on 08/27/2008, -2/+6the system is broken anyways, 2 faces, 2 parties, same agendas...to bleed you dry
- jetboyterp, on 08/27/2008, -1/+5@ marike...
What about FOX News is "Republican"? Bill O mentioned last night that the first night of the DNC convention, FOX News beat CNN by 700,000 viewers, and beat MSDNC by over a million. - truck87bp, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4Edward R. Murrow would be proud of Digg.com and Reddit.com and the Drudge report.
- RapeApe, on 08/27/2008, -1/+5When I watch a show, I don't want to hear another show over it. I kept it on C-SPAN last night till The Daily Show came on. Plan on doing the same tonight.
- Vern58, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4 As a person who has worked in health care all of my life, let me tell you, if we do not fix this problem NOW- not later- we will have the biggest massive mess in US history. Health care is dysfunctional in this country. The only way to fix it is to pass a workable national public health care system.Period.
Now i know that there are those of you out there screaming about the evils of socialism. You all need to get over it, and face reality. I see it every day. And i work for a private health care system- for now. I am seeking new employment at a not for profit. Take it from a lifelong insider. We had better pull our our heads and fix this mess. Before it is beyond fixing. - stretch611, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4Watching the pundits talk about the convention while the convention is currently live, is like watching a football game with an oblivious and annoying announcer.
While the sports announcer is showing a replay of a incomplete pass that cost the home team the game; the current play that is not shown is a spectacular 65 yard touchdown play in the last few seconds that snatches a victory from what would otherwise be a utter defeat. - Shiftgood, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4@Jaablaze
Think about it like this. (because its not welfare, which i understand you are upset about).
Under Obama you will pay less taxes than McCain, you will, in essence receive bigger paychecks every month from your employer. On top of that money saved from not going to the government, you will also save thousands of dollars a year in health care. (i think the average saving will be somthing close to 3,000 dollars a year).
The Obama plan isnt a complete government take over of health care. Its a mix of private and public (gov) systems that relieves the high costs, makes it much easier for businesses to help their employees, and makes health care more accessible to the American population.
This isnt just a hand out. Its not a Nazi style takeover of health care. Obama knows that people are not ready to give up private health care, and so you simply dont have to. But he wants to make your coverage more accessable for you, your friends, your parents, your girlfriend, your grandma and your fellow americans.
united we stand. - Chirp08, on 08/27/2008, -4/+7Don't worry, the Republican convention will be on EVERY channel.
- Spuy767, on 08/27/2008, -1/+4Well, "Always" was a stretch, should have said, for quite some time.
- richbleak, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3jetboyterp: I'm afraid you are under some misconceptions. I am not a "truther". I don't believe that Bush/Cheney/etc. planned and carried out 9/11. The "Project for the new American Century" did not begin with "truthers". It is a real thing my friend. Please research this because it is very important. It is fact that they had drafted plans for attacking Iraq and overthrowing Saddam well before being elected; this isn't something that they hid. This was a public movement that lobbied our government to overthrow Saddam. Your comments are extremely disheartening; the fact that people believe something is part of a conspiracy movement even though it is part of the public record and easily verifiable makes me wonder if we are capable of effectively governing ourselves anymore.
- nixfu, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Because they were/are the best?
Even BIll Richardson last night was gushing on Fox News about how much better and fair coverage they were giving the Democrats. - nixfu, on 08/27/2008, -2/+5Not true. This is a recent fake phenomenon. The conventions were SUPPOSED and USED TO BE about picking the candidate by the state representatives.
Now they are nothing but staged commercials to anoint the candidate chosen by the powerfull and the little people are screwed out of their power in the process. - defwheezer, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Will the same thing happen during the Republican convention? I think not- it will likely be another MSM fueled revival for Saint Reagan and the Good Olde Party. Thanks Murdoch.
- wardawg31, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Have you ever tried to pick ax into cement. It is not easy. They might try using a jack-hammer as that would speed up the process.
- shipwreck58, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3I have been depending on the BBC for American news since around 2000. Irks the ***** out of me.
- pittpat, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3PBS has pretty good coverage also
- tcbishop12, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2How'd you do, Shiftgood? Pretty darn good.
- bsmang, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2lol
- oldgal, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2Not to mention that they ignore issues that do exist. I am totally impressed by their ability to take a topic (e.q. will Hillary say the right things, or the McCain talking points of Hillary did not make a personal connection) which is worth maybe 5 minutes of time and beat it to death all day long - every time I surfed over to cable news they had somebody else whose opinion is worth about as much as mine opining at length. I thought about taking metrics on how much time is spent on issues (background and stances), and candidate qualifications (facts, not opinions), vs. polls, and discussion of the potential impact of some stupid thing on a campaign - but I find myself incapable of sitting through all the psycho-babble. CSPAN and PBS seem to be the only answer. Thank goodness for the internet where you can actually dig up real facts.
- mcquitty, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2@marike,
Funny logic. No one can be the one... But BUSH and CHENEY... THEY DID IT.
Which is it? Does the president have power or don't they? You are trying to have it both ways. - Iztikeit, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2Thank you.
The conventions of old (really old) actually had serious debates that pertained to the country and the policies of that day.
This is just the capitalist gang-bang dressed up in Hollywood clothing. How this attracts people is just silly.
This is "Change" we just do not need. America has a solid foundation and it is barely standing at this point. It's just a matter of time until someone with a brilliant yet sinister mind appears to take full advantage of the mess and loopholes we have created. - stretch611, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2They should get out of the way because I want to see the news happening and get the chance to interpret it myself. How can I (or even the pundits) understand what is happening if I hear nothing but the pundits mindless blather?
- ndseifi, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2Where is the evidence that national healthcare compromises quality of service?
Nearly 20% of the US citizens do not have any health insurance. In one of the wealthiest nations in the world that is simply an appalling statistic, which cannot sensibly be debunked. If your argument is that late capitalism benefits the vast majority with more wealth, then how do you explain that?
If the belief that every citizen deserves the right to health care makes me a communist; a sickle wielding, frothing communist, who wants to strip you of your very weak claim to liberty, then I'm quite happy to accept that title. - Spuy767, on 08/27/2008, -5/+7The conventions are, and always have been, a big campaign advert. The DNC is usually far worse in its douchbaggery though. Let's take Ted Kennedy for instance. First, I wanna know why the Kennedys are such a huge part of the Democratic party, because other than the Martrydom of JFK, whose actions, by the way, kept us in Vietnam, an "Illegal War," for far longer than we should have been. And while I'm glad to see Ted Kennedy doing so well, I have a friend who just had surgery for brain cancer, he makes John McCain look like a Calcuttan serf with all the money and material wealth he has.
