- rainman21, on 06/12/2009, -1/+16The governor of Massachusetts wants to cut a pay increase for police officers with college degrees meanwhile he want to give free cars to people on welfare so they can get to work easier. We all know your trying to keep a liberal state happy, but you dont have to be insane.
- gwycliff, on 06/12/2009, -0/+9well illinois will approve of ANYONE after getting blago out of there
- rblancarte, on 06/12/2009, -0/+8Inaccurate title. They may call it a "power" poll, but it is really just a popularity poll w/ adjusted numbers.
- reaper527, on 06/12/2009, -0/+8random observation, but did anyone else notice that the majority of the republican governors are in the top 25 approval slots, where as the majority of the democrat governors are in the bottom 25 approval slots (including our disgrace of a governor here in massachusetts, governor patrick)?
- harrisbradley, on 06/12/2009, -0/+5My governator can kick your governator's ass.
- hivoltage815, on 06/12/2009, -1/+6This list is terrible.
A governor's power should either be based on the weight of their decisions or the influence of their voice. For that, someone like Schwarzenegger would be at the top as would party leaders such as Palin and Jindal. Seems pointless to me to compile a list mostly based on approval ratings and call it a power ranking.
I mean seriously, who cares about Wyoming? - methdwman3, on 06/12/2009, -2/+7This isn't even the tip of the iceberg on how horrible Patrick is.
- Jackson0909, on 06/12/2009, -3/+7According to this survey, Sarah Palin still have a +14 positive approval rating in Alaska. It's funny how the media tries to spin the story like she has crashed and burned in a fiery inferno. Meanwhile, some of the most highly-touted Democratic Governors (Deval Patrick, Kathleen Sebelius, David Paterson) have abysmal approval ratings.
- yacks, on 06/12/2009, -0/+4Well out of all the spending in California.... he's picking the wrong spending.. park spending is not the problem.. You cut the park spending and that money goes to the state workers anyways and we'll still be in the same situation.. Not to mention if someone gets hurt or killed in a closed state park, California may end up being liable. I see this more as a scare tactic to get voters on his side for the upcoming budget he needs(wants) to approve.. That is all he has been doing in this mess.. "vote for my budgets or I will cut firemen and policemen.." Here's a better idea.. cut DMV workers, duplicate offices and other state workers first.. or better yet, go bankrupt and get rid of these bad contracts.
- davdev, on 06/12/2009, -0/+3Not to support Arnold, but the Governor of New York currently has some of the worst polling numbers in history.
- edwartica, on 06/12/2009, -0/+3Kulongowski at #41. That's too high of a number for a governor who has done literally nothing in his 6 years as Governor.
- Doubledown, on 06/12/2009, -0/+3I bet your governator can kick Deval Patrick's ass too
- zhaojon, on 06/12/2009, -0/+3Of the top 25 governors, 12 are Democrat and 13 are Republican. Of the bottom 25 governors, 16 are Democrat and 9 are Republican.
There are 11 Democrats with negative ratings, and 5 Republicans with negative ratings, which is what I found the most interesting. - norman619, on 06/12/2009, -1/+4That makes me question the accuracy of these numbers.
- methdwman3, on 06/12/2009, -2/+5Double digg - The fact that Patrick is so low on the list, despite being a Democrat in a state brainwashed by liberalism, should tell the rest of the country just how AWFUL he is.
- kfcurley, on 06/12/2009, -0/+3What's crazy is that Gov. Schwarzennegar ranks at #33, while states with an actual budget are at the bottom. It would be interesting to see what his ranking is today with his plan to close 20 state parks in California.
- Doubledown, on 06/12/2009, -3/+6I'll digg this to show that Deval Patrick sucks!!!!!!!!!!!
- lobothemainman, on 06/12/2009, -4/+6Sarah who?
/s - macromorgan, on 06/12/2009, -5/+7Rick Perry the 10th most popular? There's something wrong with your list.
- AndrewRidgely, on 06/12/2009, -1/+3It's great to see Nate Silver's site on Digg. He's always insightful and informative, but I don't check fivethirtyeight nearly as much as I should.
- yacks, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2Well these really don't show how powerful they are.. just how popular. which I think Arnold would be lower.
- SirCharge, on 06/13/2009, -0/+2Silly list. Polling numbers have been inserted into a ludicrous mathematical formula and the resultant data is crap. Ultimately, this information has nothing to do with power and only marginally reflects popularity.
- bmcnally, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2No surprise Granholm is near the bottom of the list.
She was able to put off some of MI's troubles on Engler ~6 years ago (he didn't leave the budget in great shape), but she has systematically driven out small businesses, presided over an exodus of college students from the state, and has proven to be unable to control the Legislature (or encourage them to pass a budget on time). - randumbusername, on 06/12/2009, -1/+2why the patterson hate?
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1So theoretical chance at the presidency = current power? Huh what?
- samorado, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1a little known fact i picked up working for the Congressional Research Service is that several studies show that the most powerful person in most US states is the chief of staff of governors - even more so than the politicians themselves. Makes sense, I guess, and it would be interesting to see a list of most powerful CoS's.
- SuperSnake2012, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1No surprise about Paterson... sigh.
- turbodiesel, on 06/12/2009, -1/+2In California we call Schwarzenegger the Kindergartencopinator. it more fits his governing ability.
- rblancarte, on 06/12/2009, -1/+2I can get how he is popular. I live in Austin, but the bulk of this state is F-ing nuts!!!
Talk of secession:

Adios MoFo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4tWZNxnABk
(BTW for full context, Perry did an interview w/ a liberal talk show host - he said this to the guy after some tough questions)
God Bless Rush Limbaugh
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AmjENXC3zA
But yea, the guy goes on and on, and the NeoCons love him. He has really done nothing for this state - and in fact hurt it many ways (you have all heard about the Creationist head of the School Board).
To be fair, his approval rating of +10 would only place him in the middle of the pack 25th or so. But they have that crazy modifier, which makes no sense. - HenryDubb, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1I would assume power and popularity are different beasts. The Texas governor may be popular but he is not powerful. Doylie from WI is certainly one of the more powerful. WI's veto power still gives the governor the power to rewrite laws with its line item veto. The governor now is limited to moving only sentences instead of words around in a bill.
- methdwman3, on 06/12/2009, -1/+2Guess you're not a homeowner - Still waiting on my GUARANTEED property tax cut. I will settle for one of the made up jobs he hands out to his friends, however.
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1I can't wait for the people here to discover that Sanford is like Ron Paul minus the progeria.
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1The people that live there, maybe?
- reaper527, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1i didn't realize that new york was so bad that they have governor patrick beat out on suckyness. 2010 can't get here quick enough so we can get this unqualified clown out of office. this is what happens when people vote for rhetoric over qualifications.
apparently "together we can" meant "together we can make the state a giant cluster *****"
on a side note, it seems like alot of people are commenting on governor patrick in this thread. i didn't realize digg had so many massachusetts residents - inactive, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1Must stop that whole 10th amendment thing. You don't really think that this is the united STATES of America, do you? Sheesh. Stupid liberals.
- norman619, on 06/12/2009, -3/+3I wouldn't start your party just yet. Look at where Arnold is and his numbers. They do not seem to be correct based on everything that is going on. He should be closer to the bottom. How can the governor of a sinking ship (CA) be more popular than the governor of NY?
- brucealmighty, on 06/12/2009, -1/+1Ahrnold is more popular than powerful....and that's not saying very much. Also, among other factors it's hard to equate Ahrnold's "power" with other governors who actually have at least a theoretical chance at the presidency and all the coattails that go with it.
- lisaawesome, on 06/12/2009, -1/+1I wish Brad Henry could continue being the OK governor. He isn't perfect but he has done a lot to balance the crazy that exists in our state house of representatives. I'm happy to see that despite being a Democrat in a very red state he has a good rating.
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -1/+1Kind of makes you miss Mitt, doesn't it? Competence counts for a lot.
- pathouston22, on 06/12/2009, -4/+3Wait, he's doing something to cut spending? I'm sure the liberals will act positively towards that!
- norman619, on 06/12/2009, -2/+1No *****.
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -3/+2Dugg, only for Governators!
- placombe, on 06/12/2009, -3/+2Unlike the others in this thread, I love my governor, Deval Patrick. He's so low on the list because the House Speaker basically controls the government, which is horribly undemocratic. Deval has helped us continue to lead the nation in science & technology. He's also spending the stimulus money wisely, with a lot of it going to sustainable transportation and energy and building new schools. The Commonwealth Corps he created lets people of all ages serve like young people do for AmeriCorps. His outreach is great--he visits ALL parts of the state and has phenomenal web resources. Lastly, about the giving-cars-to-welfare comment, two of the reasons why people stay on welfare are that they can't afford child care and that they can't get to work.
- norman619, on 06/12/2009, -4/+2I see signs of bad numbers all over this thing.
- norman619, on 06/12/2009, -4/+1davdev:
I'm in NY so I'm aware of our governor's polling numbers. Sorry but you can't tell me the people of California have approve Arnold more than we approve of the NY governor. They have been fighting him vigorously. Nothing like what is happening in California is happening here in NY. It makes no sense.
