- Buddhaismybuddy, on 09/04/2008, -50/+291The man behind Obama's speech: Obama.
- jodimcmullen, on 09/04/2008, -14/+177Obama's wife wrote her own speech. Only one sentence was changed from her original draft.
- sheasie, on 09/05/2008, -44/+138So, you want smaller government? Lower taxes? And fiscal responsibly? Me too!!!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Words are cheap. The record is clear:
*** SMALLER GOVERNMENT: ***
http://perotcharts.com/images/challenges/challenge ...
FACT: Government spending has increased under both Democrats AND Republicans since 1968. Both parties are to blame for the astronomical growth of the Federal Government. So what's the difference?
MCCAIN: Preaches smaller Government, but McCain voted in favor of EVERY spending INCREASE proposed and executed by Bush Administration.
OBAMA: Voted against several spending increases - a more modest approach.
*** LOWER TAXES: ***
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story ...
MCCAIN: Yes, McCain will lower your taxes!! If you earn $66,000 a year or less, McCain will lower your taxes by 0.7% !!! (About $462.00)
OBAMA: Yes, Obama will lower your taxes, too!! If you earn $66,000 a year or less, McCain will lower your taxes by 2.4% !!! (About $1,584.00)
*** FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY ***
http://seekingalpha.com/article/92929-republicans- ...
FACT: The national debt has INCREASED under EVERY Republican administration (without exception!) over the past 25 years.
MCCAIN: Voted in favor of Bush's economic agenda 90% of the time. As a result, America's dollar is weak, and the economy is facing deeply concerning issues due to historic national debt.
OBAMA: Plans to increase taxes ONLY on people earning MORE than $600,000 annually to help insure "fiscal responsibility" !!!
*** CONCLUSION: ***
Words are cheap. We need to "face facts". The record is clear: OBAMA/BIDEN '08

(This is an unusually critical election year. Act responsibly. Please Digg-up & forward.) - utexas112, on 09/05/2008, -19/+69If you weren't infuriated by her speech -- conservative or liberal -- then you weren't paying attention.
- USArugula, on 09/04/2008, -20/+53So that's what ***** sounds like when when delivered by someone who can talk.
- uselessexpert, on 09/05/2008, -5/+38I must say Obama is a very good orator.
But I am sure he does not write all his speeches like everyone thinks he does.
He has a lot of input on what he wants to say on his speeches, but with all his engagements and all other responsibilities, he does not have time and write a full speech to deliver to the masses.
That's why every great politician running for office as at least one very good speech writer. - EatingPie, on 09/05/2008, -14/+36From Above: "He had crafted the message even before Palin was picked."
No, only a PORTION of the speech was pre-written. And it was a few statements of basic ideology, and the McCain praising. But more than half the speech was about Palin herself specifically. He could not have "crafted the message even before" she was chosen because that was far too specific.
While it would have been nice if Palin wrote it herself, speech writers are so common, it's actually UNUSUAL that Obama wrote his own speech. Completely out of the ordinary. Clinton, for example, had a writer for his speeches, and the NYT would often analyze them because his main speech writer liked to "hide" cultural references in them.
Kudos to Obama for sure! But this is nothing to ding Palin on.
-Pie - EnviroChem, on 05/22/2009, -13/+34Barack also wrote his own speech.
- Buddhaismybuddy, on 09/05/2008, -5/+23Please do some research before calling me a liar.
Obama DOES write some of his own speeches. He wrote his acceptance speech. Yes, he does have speech writers, but they DO NOT write all of his speeches.
Here is proof.

http://www.newsweek.com/id/84756 - infinitydl, on 09/05/2008, -26/+40They all use speechwriters dummy!
- zedkitty, on 09/05/2008, -6/+20the MESSAGE you knob! not the specifics!
- tracyerin24, on 09/05/2008, -7/+21At least he found someone who was able to pronounce all of the words he wrote for them....
- infinitydl, on 09/05/2008, -27/+40Not true, David Axelrod, the campaign chief for Obama also is the main speachwriter. You must have been tricked by the MSM
- Bukowsky, on 09/05/2008, -1/+14Not to be confused with Jon Favreau the actor/director/writer.... @ThinkBox is referring too Jon Favreau, a 26-year-old college graduate from Massachusetts.

A simple google search will tell you everything you need to know. - jamesalfaro, on 09/05/2008, -2/+14"Once Palin was chosen, Scully tailored the speech to the Alaska governor, highlighting her biography and using her PTA background and local political experience (contrasted so memorably with Obama's work as a community organizer) to bolster his two themes."
- Buddhaismybuddy, on 09/05/2008, -2/+14Obama wrote it. Google is your friend.

NPR's Don Gonyea passed along this exchange between Obama's chief strategist David Axelrod and reporters. It took place on the flight to Denver. The transcript was written up by the campaign...
[Q] Is the speech written?
[DA] The speech is substantially written but as with all Obama
speeches he'll be refining it, and buffing it up and working on it I'm
sure right until the very end. So, I mean he's been thinking about it
for a long time, he's been working on it for a long time so.
[Q] How long has he been thinking about it?
[DA] I think he started thinking about it before he left on
vacation, and you know he's been working on it intermittently ever
since with his speechwriters and... - david76, on 09/05/2008, -9/+21So that's the douchebag behind all of the snide remarks? I bet his mom is real proud of him.
"Great job, son! If you don't have anything nice to say, say it anyway." - niradg, on 09/05/2008, -3/+13Oh yeah, because middle America pays so much in capital gains taxes. http://www.ctj.org/html/cgwp698.htm
- rz8472, on 09/05/2008, -1/+11No he doesn't. But it is confirmed that he wrote this one and the Philadelphia speech about Rev. Wright... which are incidentally his best speeches imo. Heck, he might even be better than his own speechwriter.
- ThinkBox, on 09/04/2008, -17/+26[needs citation]
"Jon Favreau" is one of them. - Buddhaismybuddy, on 09/05/2008, -1/+10Here's another source for you. It even tells you HOW he writes them.
http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1 ... - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -8/+17Wait, Palin didn't write her own speech? A speech rife with 95% snide attacks and 5% substance. I had no idea.
/sarcasm - buba1243, on 09/05/2008, -2/+11Obama doesn't write all his speeches but he did write the one on race. As well with others. Nobody would have time to write all their own speech nor memorize all of them. Palin did a good job with a bit of a glitch lets see her do that again with doing different speeches every day.
- circusbred, on 09/05/2008, -2/+11A politician has a speechwriter?! I'm shocked!
- tjhawkin, on 09/05/2008, -22/+30biggest lie i've ever heard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- samyoungguitar, on 09/05/2008, -11/+19Another republican puppet. And people say Obama has no substance.
- poet, on 09/05/2008, -2/+10Take your own advice. Better yet, kill yourself.
- stattek, on 09/05/2008, -5/+13Then leave.
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 09/05/2008, -5/+13Ugh.. I dont support either party, but that woman's voice is like nails on a chalk board. I would hate to have to listen to her for 4 or more years. And the whole PTA, Hockey mom crap.. Oh god, I hate those suburban greater than thou mom types. You know the ones where their kid is never at fault, its always the OTHER kid.
- FreddieD, on 09/05/2008, -3/+10You're going to see just how much Palin wings it when she's forced to actually talk to the media in a few days.
- D3koy, on 09/05/2008, -0/+7Correction:
"If you don't have anything nice to say, become a speech writer and let other people say it for you" - skatoolaki, on 09/05/2008, -2/+9There was no way they were going to let oh-so-green Palin write her own speech - not with so much at stake & so much controversy brewing. Who knows if she was even capable of doing so? The fact is, even if she was capable (she has been said to "love writing" and wanted to work in journalism at one point), there is no way in hell they would have let her craft her own words. This speech had to be "perfect", and was cleverly (or not so cleverly, since a good portion of it was misinformation and half-truths) plotted and planned out.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -1/+8oh so you think he is really against universal health care? you think he is really against a woman's right to an abortion? you think he's really against the environment? wow maybe he is really a right winger...or maybe you're just a mindless twit.
- andrexx, on 09/05/2008, -0/+7Speech writers take what a candidate wants to say and puts it into coherent words that will strike the audience and/or reach out. Whatever the goal of the speech is. The speech was not completely written - it was ghost written because obviously the Veep spot has to have the same (or similar) view on key issues that the pres nominee wants. So yes, it is very likely that Biden ALSO had part of his speech written. It's SMART to do that. More time prepping the candidate, less time wasted on writing speeches on the fly.
- monoa, on 09/05/2008, -7/+13When you're able to spell 'speech', I'll pay attention.
- burritocmdr, on 09/05/2008, -6/+12The only concern I have right now is the irony of your alias ThinkBox. Only a simpleton would believe all the drivel the repubs were spouting at the convention. Go do a little research on your own to find out Obama's accomplishments in the senate. No one is going to do the research for you. Wikipedia would be a good place to start.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -9/+15Obama's speech was written by Jon Favreau
- Taiyoryu, on 09/05/2008, -2/+8@QuadZeroRoute
a) Capital gains only applies when selling your home. Oh and that's only if you make a profit off the sale otherwise you can file an investment loss on your tax return. Do not confuse capital gains with property taxes which vary by state.
b) Capital gains taxes do not have to be paid if you reinvest the money into a new home. I forget what the waiting period is.
So what impact will that have on average Joe Homeowner? Very little since average Joe Homeowner isn't selling his house especially in this market. Who does this affect the most? Most likely real estate investors commonly known as house flippers. The same real estate speculators that helped fuel the mortgage crisis. - Buddhaismybuddy, on 09/05/2008, -1/+7@QuadZeroRouteQuadZeroRoute
FAIL.
How Obama Writes His Speeches -
FTA:
"U.S. Senator and Presidential Candidate Barack Obama works on his election night speech in his room at the Hyatt Hotel in Chicago, IL."
http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1 ... - inactive, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5Seconded!
- Buddhaismybuddy, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5"he's been thinking about it
for a long time, he's been working on it for a long time so."
He = Obama
As in, Obama has been working on it for a long time.
Did you forget how to read? - stattek, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5@QuadZeroRoute
Completely misquoting the article your linking to.
First, the 26% figure is from 1985. More than 20 years out of date.
Second, the chart does not show the percentage a person pays to the government in taxes. Instead it displays the sources of the tax money the government collects as part of the capital gains tax. For instance, if real estate does particularly well one year, the government is likely to receive more money from that source, resulting in a large section of the chart devoted to that source. It does not necessarily indicate that the taxation rate has increased. - beesaretasty, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5Rearlgrant - I would like to correct you. The Senate is 49-49. Lieberman would have to be counted in the Democrat column to consider the Dems controlling the Senate. Bernie could certainly count. But Lieberman? In the case that we count one for each, the tie breaker goes to Cheney. The Republicans control the "Do-Nothing" Senate they keep attacking.
- cedarbaydave, on 09/05/2008, -4/+9The biggest problem with reading someone else's speech, is that you can't take credit for the brilliance, but you can be held accountable for the lies.
I have a feeling this is going to be laughable when she finally has to speak on her own. - dan222555, on 09/05/2008, -10/+15And the media assault on John McCain and Sarah Palin continues. It's only going to get stronger between now and November as they become more desperate. Hopefully the American people will see through it.
- NCJake, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5To me this is disturbing. I read his book, "Dominion." It was the darkest book I've read and a challenge to complete. I found it depressing to read these outrageous facts and to know that the author had access to POTUS but wasn't able to do anything helpful (what, then, can I do?).
For him to write speeches for someone who is an avid hunter and fan of gun ownership - including the kind of hunting he deplores in clear moral terms in his book and guns used for hunting in ways far removed from using a rifle and skill to get a deer- is disturbing. I think it is newsworthy. I also think integrity requires standing up for what you believe in even when it is hard or unpopular. My guess is Scully left his beliefs at the door when he entered 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in the past and that he continues to do so now as he crafts the message for someone that, by his moral standards, is less than an ideal role model. - mgraham80, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5Yes, because Bush shrank the government so much these last 8 years mirite???
- connieLingus, on 09/05/2008, -15/+20this never ending anti-gop drumbeat is a very ugly side of digg.
- harrisbradley, on 09/06/2008, -1/+6I'm more interested in the laws they write, than their speeches. I ***** HATE speeches. Both of these guys were not approved by Ron Paul, and Dr. Paul explained why, and at that point I crossed them off my list. I hope the fact that someone wrote their own speech doesn't factor into your decision making for the president. I don't see speech writing as a presidential task (although speeches are commonplace, another thing I ***** hate. Just get to ***** work.)
