- TunaFishGangsta, on 10/04/2008, -14/+302I dugg this because it highlights the fact that the highest office in our land is being sought by John McCain not out of patriotism or policy reform; rather, it's simply a prize fueled by his own personal ambition.
Direct quote from John McCain's 2002 book, Worth The Fighting for: A Memoir:
"I didn't decide to run for president to start a national crusade for the political forms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be president because it had become my ambition to be president. I was sixty two years old when I made the decision, and I thought it was my one shot at the prize." - Moisgreat, on 10/06/2008, -8/+259A Maverick does not tell people they are a Maverick
- MercyPolitics, on 10/04/2008, -17/+109Very good, more double talk express than maverick.....
- dagnome, on 10/05/2008, -11/+99This video refutes EVERYTHING that McCain is trying to bamboozle America into believing about him. It's a breath-taking exposé of a power-seeking megalomaniac.
- snowman13, on 10/06/2008, -9/+80I love how the media says nothing about how ***** of a pilot McCain was
- MavTheMaverick, on 10/05/2008, -48/+103McCain is a traitor
- jericho4119, on 10/05/2008, -12/+58An incredibly detailed overview of the long, sad career of a maverick.
- Cadicus, on 10/06/2008, -0/+42Why haven't more people picked up on that quote?
- AdInventive, on 10/06/2008, -8/+48Don't just stop at watching the video. Read his article, then do a little bit of research yourself. You will find it all to be truthful.
- charlietuna, on 10/06/2008, -5/+41I wish people would stop tossing word like traitor and terrorist around. It cheapens their meaning and contributes to a kind of hyperbole soup where everything is reduced to absolutes. The dictionary says that hyperbole is not meant to be taken literally, but it's annoying nonetheless. McCain might have sold out, he might be a brat, but disagreement is not the makings of a traitor, it is the essence of democracy.
- Deoliver47, on 10/05/2008, -12/+45Important to view this and to read the cover story: Make Believe Maverick and send it to everyone you know who may be on the fence.

Enough said. - AndrewMoyer, on 10/06/2008, -0/+31They're too busy putting McCain/Palin '08 banners in their yards and watching Fox News to care about facts.
- windphoenix, on 10/06/2008, -7/+37McCain is hopeless. First it was experience. Then it was change. Then it was change we all could believe in. Then it was change we can't afford (used against Obama), then it was change and experience. And now it's gutter politics. Well, I am tired of this guy getting a pass for being a hero. I think what you do says a lot about who you are, and McCain has turned down all who used to admire him just a few years ago.
- BitterJenn, on 10/06/2008, -2/+28I read the entire article (before watching this video clip) and I have to say I was shocked by its contents. Even if only 1/10 of the article is true, then it clearly indicates that John Mccain is a terrifying, unstable individual. I used to actually 'respect' Mccain 8 years ago... and as each day passes that his malicious campaign runs and I'm increasingly disgusted by the way he handles himself (temper tantrums, VP pick, Rove campaign tactics) I have to wonder; what in the hell happened to this guy? This article really answers those questions for me. I applaud Dickinson for being one of the very, very few people to openly discuss that taboo subject of Mccain's years as a POW. Most journalists wouldn't touch that subject with a ten foot pole. Mccain supporters are going to lash out against this article as being bias and untrue, and I ask those supporters to take up their issue with the Military personnel, fellow POW's, and fellow Republican politicians who's provided much of the information in the article.
- RickyTheRiot, on 10/06/2008, -3/+23I've said this on several Digg threads but nobody seems to have picked it up, the word "Maverick" comes from Samuel Maverick. He was a rancher who didn't like ranches. In fact he disliked them so much that when it came to branding his cattle he couldn't care and left them unbranded. The term "maverick" was born, meaning not that you go your own way, but that you are lacking in diligence to your tasks.
When Palin claims McCain is a maverick, she is claiming he has an attitude that exudes "lack of interest", not that he is some sort of pioneer. Sadly nobody has explained this fact to Mrs Palin. - sprNmgcHlmt, on 10/06/2008, -7/+27worse than bush.
yes, i know what i'm saying. - hex2bit, on 10/06/2008, -5/+25Video wouldn't play for me, but found it mirrored on Youtube. If the video doesn't play for you, try this one...

- offcenter77, on 10/06/2008, -6/+25This article is very long but VERY informative. Thank you Rolling Stone for bringing it to us. I used to admire McCain. Back in the days when he was running up against Bush in the primaries back in 2000, I always thought that a McCain / Powell ticket would have been awesome. Of course, Powell wouldn't do it since he served under Bush's father, and Powell is a very loyal man. But somewhere along the line, McCain seemed to change. I didn't know when it happened, but there was an obvious difference in the way he handled himself in politics. Ever since he has announced his candidacy, he seemed to be a different person. This article now makes it clear that it happened after 9/11, and why.
The article also provided some real answers to questions I have always had about McCain; questions that I always assumed had certain expected answers. How did the Vietnamese prison guards learn that McCain's father was the admiral in charge of the whole operation? I always assumed it was through intelligence. Nope. McCain told them himself, only to ensure that they didn't kill him. Also, the torture only lasted the first two years. Once Ho Chi Minh died, the torture stopped. I knew McCain was on the USS Forrestal when the ship burned (I was in the navy, and the Forrestal fire is a major training point to shipboard firefighting). But what I didn't know was what he was doing the whole time the fire was raging: hiding in the ready room like coward. Then he simply left the ship with the reporter that was sent to cover the story!
Many more revelations like that are in this article. For me, this article paints a more complete picture of who John McCain is. I am disappointed with him, and I am angry at myself for falling for another politician's facade. Right from the start of this political cycle I was for Obama, only because McCain was so much like Bush. But now, I fear a McCain Administration. He is a spoiled rotten mediocre loser. His hotheadedness and his lackluster qualifications, including VP pick, do not belong in the White House. He is a dangerous man to have such power. He will make Cheney look like Mother Theresa. For the sake of the country, we must NOT let this happen. - osukwm, on 10/06/2008, -1/+20* liberals' (punctuation)
* "better than", not "better then" (grammar)
* "an uneducated idiot", not "a uneducated idiot" (grammar)
I'm not really that picky, but if you're going to call someone uneducated, at least proofread it. Moron. - pimpofpixels, on 10/06/2008, -2/+19Get with the program. McCain means more of the same.
- Reynardine, on 10/06/2008, -8/+25Digg members are biased. If you post bullsh** you'll be buried faster than you can F5.
PROVE.
ME.
WRONG. - roflcopterdown, on 10/06/2008, -5/+21What does John McCain have in common with James Garner and Mel Gibson?
They all pretended to be mavericks. - BXRWXR, on 10/06/2008, -11/+26Ha! I always knew he was full of *****. With all due respect, most Republicans are.
- morphkons, on 10/06/2008, -0/+16As someone who has been in uniform (have you?) I can assure you that a substantial portion qualify as full fledged douche bags and deserve little or no respect. This definitely includes volunteers who volunteer for all the wrong reasons.
I've seen the biggest erosion of my rights in the last six decades as a result of the current moron occupying the White house's attempt to convert America into a fascist dictatorship under the guise of "protecting us".
McCain is cut from the same bolt as W. - inactive, on 10/06/2008, -4/+19Prove the story false with facts.
- LoveLikeRockets, on 10/06/2008, -0/+16Bill Clinton was one of the greatest presidents in history.
- a2theharris, on 10/06/2008, -5/+19I love the maverick name trick. They get to frame our mental image of a "george bush clone" as different from the least popular president in US history AND they evoke positive feelings for him from a completely unrelated American movie icon without actually saying he's a "top gun". It is a genius tactic. Give them credit. Now, this punk rolling stones editor wants to rain on their parade. Listen, I'm sure grampa doesn't mean to hurt anyone. He just shouldn't be trusted with the keys to the car anymore.
- inactive, on 10/06/2008, -6/+20It is about time! Everything I have been saying about McCain is starting to come out in main stream media.
How would Palin say it? We are blessed to have truth revealed to us, praise be to God, and the great Holy Spirit. - Qposter, on 10/06/2008, -2/+15@Ploofka Suspect you might be racist or dumb...
- timoumd, on 10/06/2008, -1/+15Conservatives would ***NEVER*** do that....
- RhoVisions, on 10/06/2008, -0/+13You mean how Republicans throw around "muslim", "terrorist", "socialist"? Both sides are equally guilty of the crime. Don't pretend one side is above that.
- yarnedia, on 10/06/2008, -3/+15Tom Cruise is the only Maverick for me.
- muckemuck, on 10/06/2008, -3/+14well.. the Republican voters knew most of this before and during the primaries and yet they voted for him. They got what they wanted.
- windphoenix, on 10/06/2008, -1/+12Stop the B.S. Please! Just because someone is more popular than you and is projected to get more votes, you shouldn't try to go as low as you can to bring him down to your level. First McCain steals the change slogan. Then he attacks Obama on Change. Now Obama is associating himself with terrorist. A couple of days from now, Palin will probably come out and say Obama is a terrorist. I mean come on! This is not a war. It's an election. People are entitled to their votes. Traitors are those who put fear in people to push their own agenda.
- inactive, on 10/06/2008, -3/+14You right, we should only listen to people who we already agree with. Bush Youth.
- Albumen, on 10/06/2008, -0/+11So basically you're saying that you're stupid.
- inactive, on 10/06/2008, -2/+12That is called democracy. I know it must be really weird for you to experience it for the first time. You republicans just can’t rig the digg counters like you can presidential elections.
- windphoenix, on 10/06/2008, -3/+13Oh. I forgot to mention that McCain is now complaining about Obama raising funds and now is accusing him of being a terrorist. Nice! Way to go Papa McCain
- protogenxl, on 10/06/2008, -4/+14Maverick, you just did an incredibly brave thing. What you should have done was land your plane! You don't own that plane, the tax payers do! Son, your ego is writing checks your body can't cash. You've been busted, you lost your qualifications as section leader three times, put in hack twice by me, with a history of high speed passes over five air control towers, and one admiral's daughter!
- Eqxy, on 10/06/2008, -1/+12While I don't think the fact that his piloting experience is in any way relevant to his presidential credentials, I do think the fact that he crashed his plane 5 times says something about his competency in a chosen profession.
- osukwm, on 10/06/2008, -0/+11It seems like you don't really know what ADD is, but I'll leave that alone.
"Mr. I did not have relations with that girl" doesn't belong on the same list as the last Bush. Not saying he's perfect, just saying Clinton > Bush, and Clinton > McCain too. There's something to be said for a balanced budget and a cool head. - jackieblu, on 10/06/2008, -5/+15Many of the "fly boy's" short comings he has tried - unsuccessfully to pin on Obama!
- SpinningHead, on 10/06/2008, -0/+11...and the fact that he would have been a cook on a destroyer had it not been for his family connections.
- EarlOfLade, on 10/06/2008, -1/+11But he has all the buzz words that Americans like and you know this if you have spent any time reading Digg or similar.
He uses "POW", "patriotism", "tax cuts", "god", "country" and similar platitudes. The problem is of course that the American populous swallow this like a good hooker. - Azselendor, on 10/06/2008, -5/+14don't fall into the trap, republicans are full of crap
- inactive, on 10/06/2008, -0/+10To get into military flight school you have to be the academic best. If your father is an Admiral who can manipulate the system you can get into flight school even though you are the academic worst with no aptitude for flying
If you do not have academic skill sets to fly you will crash. You crash one aircraft in the military and you fly a desk, unless your father is an Admiral who can manipulate the system.
According to all accounts by other prisoners and the Vietnamese, McCain was given special treatment was they were easy on him because father was an Admiral. - b1ll30, on 10/06/2008, -2/+11Hyperbole soup, nice phrase.
Also, thanks for the dose of rational thought. - leitakashi, on 10/06/2008, -2/+11If this is true, this is very sad indeed. And since this is Rolling Stone, not the Huffington Post, I'm more inclined to believe it... Besides, I always got that cocky attitude when I watched McCain in that debate with Obama. Some of this might be a stretch but I think the general story might just be telling the truth. If so, I mourn the day if McCain/Palin win, and not just because Palin is a bumbling idiot comparable to Bush as much as McCain can be. But because McCain is not qualified to lead /anything/ with that background and attitude. I don't care if he has changed. If he has, I haven't seen it. All I've seen is "Maverick", "Drill, baby, drill", "THE CURE FOR LACK OF HEALTH CARE IS WALMART", "Obama doesn't get it," and all other mannerisms of Obama bashing. (Sad that the Obama campaign is conforming to bash McCain now.)
That's allllll I've seen from the McCain campaign. -
