The Future of the U.S.? Look to California

time.com — California, you may have heard, is an apocalyptic mess of raging wildfires, soaring unemployment, mass foreclosures and political paralysis. It's dysfunctional. It's ungovernable. It's so broke, it had to hand out IOUs. But California, to borrow a phrase, will be back. "The next economy is already in place there, and it's amazing."

  • dgoshilla, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1California is full of possibility. I've lived here in Los Angeles for 8 years and have found it to be a great place to live, work, socialize and explore.

    My main concern with the state is the size. We have many large cities scattered throughout the state from north to south each with a diverse economy, geography population and even climate.

    Because of this its hard to create a unified state with a common vision. Each district has its own particular needs and wants.

    Without consensus on long term goals I don't think California can ever reach its full potential.

    The high speed rail will go a long way towards bridging each city and making California whole.
