- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -37/+894Senator Hagel has been a voice against the war for years. He has said that he is amazed at the acquiescence of America to Bush's foreign policy of militarism.
I suspect that he is trying to get the young people to wake up. If enough politicians talk about the need for a draft in order to continue our wars of conquest, then maybe the young people will turn off their play stations and do what they should be doing: throwing rocks at the cops and raising hell - Grumps, on 11/11/2007, -12/+614I hate being 20 when stupid things happen.
- MindTrigger, on 11/12/2007, -15/+612I'm all for this draft for one reason. It would mean the immediate end to this war. As soon as the general public is affected by the chance of losing a child, Bush's ***** will come falling down around him. The only thing keeping his ass in a job is the apathy of the masses.
- mattewood, on 11/12/2007, -4/+556No offence, but the title of this is misleading. The draft is not coming back, that Senator was just stating that in order to maintain the level of military operations, a draft would need to be reinstated.
Just sayin..I think this Senator is saying that in order to make people realize how real war is.. intentionally (or not) helping to dissuade casual acceptance of wrong military endeavours.
Grumps: You shouldn't guess, just look and find out. A quick background check will reveal Chuck Hagel is a Vietnam War Veteran and has two children, a daughter 17 and a son 15. Use the power of the internet! - theNazz, on 11/10/2007, -23/+323"War is nothing noble or good; it's all about brutality and suffering, and that should frighten you and intimidate you into doing what's right, to prevent going to war."
I don't remember Congress declaring war so it would be difficult to DRAFT people to fight one. - Mjeacoma, on 11/10/2007, -0/+186At least you can have a drink...oh wait....forget it....
- FyreGoddess, on 11/10/2007, -3/+186Vietnam wasn't a declared war, either. Was it difficult to draft people then?
- ZenFountain, on 11/13/2007, -5/+95Hagel is also a Vietnam vet and one of the few senators (from either side of the isle) that really seems to understand the intracity of foreign policy.
- Lisztman, on 11/09/2007, -8/+96You people are ***** stupid.
Read the damn article.
THE SECOND SENTENCE reads: "Questioned after his speech, Hagel, R-Neb., said he is not calling for reinstatement of the military draft."
God, people can be so damn retarded. - Charlotte_Web, on 11/09/2007, -8/+94Story buried as innacurate.
Senator Hagel was SPECULATING that the draft MAY come back while speaking to high school students.
Sen. Hagel is a vocal opponent of the Iraq War. His reason for the draft? "The burdens of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are being carried by too small a share of the nation's population."
Until a resolution to reinstate the draft hits the floor of both houses of Congress and is looking like it has a chance of passing (which it doesn't), don't get your panties in a wad, folks... - blakeage, on 11/09/2007, -14/+99I'd rather sit in jail.
- brufleth, on 11/09/2007, -1/+73You must be new. Drafts don't apply to the wealthy and influential.
- ZenFountain, on 11/10/2007, -17/+88The end of the draft ensured that politicians could send our soldiers anywhere in the world on a whim, because after all they are volunteers. In 107 BCE the Roman Republic reformed their civilian army into all all professional volunteer force because long campaigns lasting many years had broken the citizenry. The professional Roman army was the most efficient killing machine in the ancient world and from that point forward Rome was in a perpetual state of war. Just over fifty years later Julius Caesar, with his professional army that was loyal to him and not to the state, put an end to the republic part of Rome and installed himself as a dictator, beginning what we call the Roman Empire.
I'm not claiming a politician could ever turn the military on us, but people need to realize the serious consequences of a nation that is a perpetual state of war. The Romans never realized they had ceased to become a democratic republic and replaced that with a imperial dictatorship. Will we suffer the same fate if these pointless wars never end and politicians keep finding new reasons to expand the American empire? BTW this is not an endorsement of Ron Paul, I find his supporters extremely annoying and I'm tired of my favorite forums and email box being filled to the brim with Ron Paul one liners. Digg me down! - imants, on 11/09/2007, -4/+70Well, sure. Same thing went for Vietnam. The protests against the Vietnam war were half-assed until the middle and upper-middle class folk started getting drafted. Then, people realized how real it was, and that's when the protests kicked into high gear.
- lowerlogic, on 11/09/2007, -14/+76If the draft comes back, this is my answer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_disobedience
- murf43143, on 11/09/2007, -8/+68What a HORRIBLY inaccurate title description. Way to try and get diggs....
All it is, ONE guy talking to a group of HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.
BURRRRRRIED TO *****.
"Questioned after his speech, Hagel, R-Neb., said he is not calling for reinstatement of the military draft." - urubos, on 11/09/2007, -2/+59Pretty soon we will have passed the development time for Duke Nukem Forever as well. That's when you know it's gotten really bad.
- NinjaJosh, on 11/13/2007, -10/+61Buried for sensationalism. People have been saying this since Afghanistan and multiple senators have stated it. Maybe it is a needed shock tactic for some, but another single senator simply mentioning it isn't worth going crazy over.
- jtingley, on 11/09/2007, -12/+62How's the weather in Canada?
- bsw50, on 11/09/2007, -2/+47Congrats on the worst headline of the week. From the article:
"Questioned after his speech, Hagel, R-Neb., said he is not calling for reinstatement of the military draft.
But he said the growing difficulty of maintaining an adequate volunteer military force is "a reality."
"I'm just stating the obvious. At some point we're going to have to make a decision on how to attract a quality force," he said."
Where you gather "Forced Military Service for All!!!11" I have no clue..... - cespee, on 11/09/2007, -13/+58Well, draft or no draft, they're not making me go. I'd rather go to prison and be safe rather than be forced to kill people and be in danger.
- bbqribs, on 11/09/2007, -3/+46Throwing rocks at cops?
Uh, no.. what they should have been doing was getting off their lazy asses and VOTING. Bush didn't win by a big margin. - fantasticFlan, on 11/10/2007, -10/+51I'd rather not kill people in a war built and sustained on lies so go ahead and call me a coward.
- rizla420, on 11/09/2007, -8/+49Agreed. The real anti war demonstartions would start then. I'm actually for it, i'm 27 no draft for me. Let the impeachment procedures roll. Man I wish Bush could be tried after he gets out of office for war crimes or something really severe. Its like they let a ***** obtain the highest rank in this country, he ***** it up. When its over he washes his hands and goes back to Crawford to play with his hay. THere are no repercussions for his actions. Free pass *****. Let anyone who's currently employed ***** up at work and see what repercussions they face.
- devo6273, on 11/09/2007, -2/+41You'll update wikipedia to reference current civil disobedience?
- ochants76, on 11/09/2007, -3/+40The title is misleading. He has been against the war since the start....he is trying to get kids to wake up and pay attention to the issues.
- Kurisuku, on 11/09/2007, -0/+36Just eat a lot of fast food, by the time a draft happens you'll be so fat that they can't take you.
- lol24, on 11/09/2007, -1/+37Thats digg. Sensationalist headlines for the win.
- pieinthesky, on 11/09/2007, -6/+41Well, the US _helped_ liberate Europe anyway...
- darkciti2, on 11/09/2007, -0/+34Oh they'll take you. You just won't be able to run as fast on the battlefield.
- Elranzer, on 11/09/2007, -1/+34Like Dick Cheney, who dodged the draft a respectable 5 times?
- ochants76, on 11/09/2007, -2/+35READ THE ARTICLE!!!!!!!!
- Goner, on 11/09/2007, -1/+33like all the congressional children who died in vietnam.. right...
- BigSax, on 11/09/2007, -1/+33I got a coalition of the willing. I got 40 nations ready to roll, son!
Like who?
Who the ***** said that? Huh? Huh? Like who? England. Japan's sending Playstations. Stankonia said they are willing to drop bombs over Baghdad. Riggity Row is coming. Afrika Bambaataa and the Zulu Nation. So, I'm not doing this by myself, and I'm not disrespecting the UN, even though they don't got no army. Go sell some medicine, bitches! I'm trying to get that oil...OOH. - jspegele, on 11/09/2007, -1/+31Just to add to your point - "Questioned after his speech, Hagel, R-Neb., said he is not calling for reinstatement of the military draft."
- Otto, on 11/09/2007, -4/+34The draft will never, ever come back. It's just that simple. People would revolt.
I myself would start stocking up on ammo and weapons, because the revolution would begin that day. - inactive, on 11/09/2007, -3/+33Buried for an inaccurate title and an inaccurate description.
Descrip: "Sen. Chuck Hagel is pushing for coerced military service..."
Article: "Questioned after his speech, Hagel, R-Neb., said he is not calling for reinstatement of the military draft."
Just spamming *****....that's all this is. - trickee411, on 11/09/2007, -3/+32why is it always bubba. what did he do to deserve being called a sodomite.

- X9001, on 11/09/2007, -7/+31I hate being alive when stupid things happen.
- Lokishot, on 11/09/2007, -0/+22you'll be what we call a meat shield.
- brufleth, on 11/09/2007, -0/+22The lack of a declared war hasn't stopped drafts before.
- daRoach, on 11/09/2007, -2/+24Well yeah, with that attitude...
- inactive, on 11/09/2007, -0/+22Don't worry, just STAY IN SCHOOL!
