- ChessPieceFace, on 09/07/2008, -7/+153FTA: "Like far too many of the stories pushed by the McCain campaign, and embraced by Fox News and far-right blogs, it's not true.
"Days before the anniversary of September 11, on the same morning that John McCain and Barack Obama released a joint statement pledging to avoid politics in light of the anniversary of the terrorist attacks, McCain's campaign accused Democrats of throwing away 12,000 American flags."The campaign says the flags were recovered from Invesco Field after the Democrats concluded their convention there," Fox News reported, "and they are going to be used as part of the warm-up ceremonies before McCain takes the stage" for a rally in Colorado Springs, Col.
But according to a senior official involved in organizing the Democratic convention, the McCain camp is simply lying about the flags.
"All of the flags at Invesco were picked up and put in bags and into storage, along with the unused flags and campaign signs. The flags were going to be donated, and the signs were going to be sent out to be used elsewhere," the official said, speaking anonymously since he was not authorized to talk to the press."
The "story" -- I use the word loosely -- has been promoted by Fox News' Carl Cameron, perhaps best known for promoting fabricated nonsense about John Kerry four years ago.
In other words, consider the source."
Ecce Republicani! - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -6/+139Republicans care a lot about the flag and not a bit about America.
- tcbishop12, on 09/07/2008, -4/+113Anything this sick-minded smells of Karl Rove and Steve Schmidt. Those of us who are old enough to remember will remember that it was Rove's dirty tricks on behalf of Nixon's 1972 campaign catapulted Rove onto the national stage.
It's times like these that a candidate with any moral character at all steps in and tells his people "Enough! For the sake of decency and truth and fairness, we can't keep running this kind of campaign!" But that time has long passed for figurehead McCain, who lacks the moral conviction to take charge of his own house, is no longer in charge of his own campaign, and if elected, will certainly not be in charge of the White House. - kmom5, on 09/07/2008, -5/+107Looks like the republicans got worked up over nothing.. again.
- totorototoro, on 09/07/2008, -2/+78Why is a Fox News Commentator spreading lies about the Oba..oh, nevermind.
- chosenson, on 09/07/2008, -1/+65Picture the kind of government McCain is promising. Gimmicks. Distractions from their bungling and lack of solutions. Censoring the press. Monitoring and sensoring our rights. Banning books. Making abortion a crime (men, you can kiss that date goodbye - if a woman can't get that "morning after" pill, you're out of luck). But take a minute to picture a McCain government. Looks a lot like GW to me.
When they say "this election isn't about issues", I hear "this election isn't about finding relief for you", well not from their side of the isle anyway.
McCain said at the RNC that he will shake up Washington and he will reach across the aisle to get things done. But a few short weeks ago, he didn't work with others across the aisle when it counted. He railed against the new GI Bill and refused to vote with either Democrats or fellow Republicans to give better benefits to those who serve. Forget posturing and stagecraft. McCain has turned himself into an empty vessel - lots of noise, signifying nothing.
I was for him at the beginning of this election. No more. - USArugula, on 09/07/2008, -5/+66My question is, after they stole these flags, why did the McCain camp strew them across the ground to take this picture: http://extras.mnginteractive.com/live/media/site36 ... Disrespectful and disgraceful. When I was coming up, you were expected to destroy any flag that touched the ground.
- MediaWeasel, on 09/07/2008, -3/+48It's the sheer nastiness of their campaign that I just don't get. It's a bitchfest, a mugging. It's a violent burglary of all that Americans hold dear, of the kind that leaves ***** smeared on the walls and your childrens' photos smashed and torn and your rooms wrecked. Unbelievable.

- peace1970, on 09/07/2008, -2/+43It's almost at the point where I can't even believe it any more...WHO are these people who support this trash and make us these lies?? WHO?? ...maybe they could all form their own angry radical right country called "Repuke Land" where lies, ill will and no tolerance for anyone are the country slogans.....
oh, yes, and their national dish could be wolf/moose stew... - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -1/+37Well, it's not like George Bush's GOP can run on a record of success.
- ScienceDoc, on 09/07/2008, -1/+37FTA "The "story" -- I use the word loosely -- has been promoted by Fox News' Carl Cameron, perhaps best known for promoting fabricated nonsense about John Kerry four years ago." This is the kind of crap the Nazis pulled. How do you Republisheep fall for this?
- djtomorama, on 09/07/2008, -4/+39Crazy how those Republicans break everything they say they stand for in elections.
As, Method Man said, "word is born, crazy shots were takin, but none ever makin" - eir574, on 09/07/2008, -3/+37"A vendor, working for the stadium, found most of the flags stuffed into black trash bags, all piled next to trash dumpsters. "
Did the vendor tell you that himself, or are you perhaps getting that information from a second or third hand source? Because, my friend's aunt has a neighbor whose daughter has a colleague who thinks she remembers having a conversation with someone on the bus who was there, and she says that's not what happened. - kmom5, on 09/07/2008, -2/+34Would a reasonable person call the people who they say are actually responsible or someone that totally had nothing to do with it?
A vendor who the McCain campaign only has talked to?
Yes, we will consider that source.
So now CBS is reporting inaccurately? Or just something you don't like? - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -6/+35How much is McCain's camp paying you Ridgeliner?
- lopla, on 09/08/2008, -8/+36Fact: the story is bogus
Fact: it remains on drudgereport as legit
Fact: it remains on foxnews as legit
Fact: it remains on red blogs everywhere as legit
Fact: people believe it's real and will continue to do so
Fact: McCain/Palin are +10 in the polls now
Fact: Americans are mindless sheep, save for 30% of them stuck in this nightmare - BabushkaBlue, on 09/07/2008, -2/+26Since the Republicans have resorted to gimmicks, superficial shows of patriotism and outright lies, I tend to believe this article is true. If it walks like a duck...
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -2/+26Where is John McCain's lapel pin!
- johnnr2, on 09/07/2008, -1/+24"Like far too many of the stories pushed by the McCain campaign, and embraced by Fox News and far-right blogs, it's not true." - lies and smears again. Hope will trump fear this year.
- dmbchris, on 09/08/2008, -0/+22I'd rather buy the world's largest flag on my credit card and then default my mortgage while the investors behind the loan are bailed out by Republicans. At least I have my flag, which is much better than my dignity.
- ulmedas, on 09/08/2008, -1/+22Hmm...seemed to be cbsnews.com
Are you mistaken, or was that just a fantastic non sequitur? - spookyttws, on 09/08/2008, -1/+19Even if they were going to toss the flags what the hell does that have to do with anyone's vote?
Kodos (as Bob Dole): Abortions for all!
Crowd: BOOO!!! BOOO!!
Dole: Very well, no abortions for anyone!
Crowd: BOOO!!! BOO!!!!
Dole: Hmmmmmm.....abortions for some....miniature American flags for others!
Crowd: YEAY!!!! - mikesoba, on 09/07/2008, -3/+20Fox does not hire "reasonable people".
- inactive, on 09/08/2008, -0/+16From:
http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/09/06/mccain-cam ...
"The move was an overt swipe at Obama from a campaign whose motto has been “country first.” But Democratic convention organizers claimed the flags were not going to be discarded — but instead were snatched from the site of Obama’s historic address to carry out a “cheap political stunt.”"
"Damon Jones, spokesman for the Democratic National Convention Committee, released a statement saying McCain should applaud the fact that thousands of American flags were “proudly waved” at their convention.
“But instead his supporters wrongfully took leftover bundles of our flags from the stadium to play out a cheap political stunt calling into question our patriotism,” he said."
Fox news has a source that disproves McCains own *****. Next time follow the source until you hit the end. That took me a whole 10 seconds to find...idiot. - inactive, on 09/08/2008, -1/+16I was at Invesco that night. I can pretty much guarantee that we took our flags with us. I got goosed (by people holding their flags) so many times on the way out I felt like I was in a walking orgy.
Everyone was keeping EVERYTHING handed out that night--copies of embargoed speeches, CHANGE signs, flags...we wanted to keep every memento we could from that night.
What a bunch of ***** (to say we tossed our flags). I just hope the American people are smart enough to see through the smoke and mirrors of the McCain/Palin dog and pony show. - djtomorama, on 09/07/2008, -0/+15Exactly, in the beginning, he was respectable in my eyes.
But the past month or two the whole country watched him turn into another of Rove's puppets.
The Bush Characteristics in him are astonishing.
That's why this election should be settled by a healthy ten round boxing match between the two. heh. - itsJALbert, on 09/07/2008, -6/+20Disclaimer: I'm voting for Obama.
DealCracker above me hit the nail on the head pretty much, but he'll get dugg down for opposing the position of this article. The vendor who found them said both sides are blowing it out of proportion. It was probably an honest mistake by an intern, and the opposing campaign is exploiting it for a cheap shot at Obama's patriotism. It's a lot easier than actually campaigning on issues.

- pintomp3, on 09/08/2008, -2/+16he's trying to earn enough mccain action center points to get his own cone of silence.
- peheimbach, on 09/07/2008, -5/+17The Republicans are simply trying to prove two things to the American Public:
1. That no matter how 'independent' the Evangelical Right may think they became this election (see Dobson's no-vote comments, for one example), they're suckers. Why? Because they're so used to sitting around on Sunday morning (and during the week if they're real devoted) and listening to someone sent "by G-d" tell them what to do, and what that Deity says everyone else MUST DO. (What can you say about a religion that PRIDES ITSELF on being called SHEEP -- dumbest animals around, all they do is FOLLOW without questioning?)
2. That no matter HOW UNBELIEVABLE (in several senses) or seemingly INCOMPETANT a campaign they run, in which they can SAY anything, can DO anything, and b/c they've enslaved the Christian Evangelicals (15% to 25% of the vote), they'll win yet again. - Hillsfar, on 09/07/2008, -0/+12Isn't this exactly the same as what the current Bush administration is doing?
We're getting a preview of what a McCain Presidency would be like. - charm803, on 09/08/2008, -0/+12After reading this:
"This election is not about issues," McCain campaign manager Rick Davis said this week. I thought Davis was offering an assessment, but it was apparently some kind of promise."
I knew it was going to be good. - mikelieman, on 09/07/2008, -0/+12What did they do with the John McCain from 2000?
- BR5490U812, on 09/08/2008, -0/+12okay to prove a point, who would neatly roll up all of the flags, tie them then throw them away? look at the picture! look at it! that's what i see. i see a deliberate attempt to organize and bag them, not throw them away. unless those poor unpaid interns were duped again...
- marike, on 09/08/2008, -0/+11The sad part is, at a time when so many Americans families are struggling, when the civil rights of our citizens are being threatened, and the damage done by 8+ years of implanting fear of a enemy that is no doubt real but that in many ways may be drastically overstated in terms of size and infrastructure, that a totally reprehensible ploy like this might work.
If this kind of thing makes you angry or worse, drains your sense of optimism, then it is not enough to simply vote. Get involved. Work weekends registering voters, whatever. If you see a story that you object to on the Fox, CNN, your local news, write to them and tell them why. As consumers we have power in numbers. I have never felt so strongly that it is our only hope. - dmbchris, on 09/08/2008, -1/+12Hmmm, who hates America more- those who let an intern handle the flag disposal, or those who lead the most incompetent administration in the last 100 years. Let's pay attention to the real issues- the ones that involve actual MONEY or RIGHTS.
- inactive, on 09/08/2008, -4/+14Yes, remember the source.
Lying Republicans.
And notice the source defending them, the lying and warmongering coward ridgeliner.
Wow, you are just an impressive traitor to your country. - enki25, on 09/08/2008, -0/+10They don't care if stories are true or false. They only care about stories that sound good to the other retards in their trailer park. They've already made up their mind that liberals are awful and need to be killed if they get any power.
- Visual77, on 09/08/2008, -1/+10Then you came up wrong. Any flag that is touching the ground must be immediately corrected so as to not be touching the ground. Any flag that is no longer in condition to be displayed should be respectfully destroyed, and one of the proper ceremonies is to burn the flag.
- Timborako, on 09/08/2008, -2/+10This story really grinds my ***** gears. I don't care if you're a conservative, liberal, republican, democrat, or whatever; accusing the other side of THROWING OUT American flags is the lowest form mudslinging, smearing politics there is. Whats next? accusations of pissing on George Washington's grave? JESUS I hate this *****
- enki25, on 09/08/2008, -0/+8Very intelligent comment that indicates how thoroughly and objectively you have approached this issue.
People like you who care about stories like this represent the only real threat to this country. - choochee, on 09/08/2008, -1/+9Lying is a good campaign strategy. It gets gullible GOP voters to the polls. They are the same unintelligent people who thought Saddam had weapons of mass destruction. Really dumb people, kind of embarrassing for our country.
- heystoopid, on 09/08/2008, -0/+8Well , I hear that the newly rich Russian Venture Capitalists are selling plenty of vacant land in Siberia just across the Bering Strait and within a short commuting distance from Wasilla and Anchoridge and have reserved a six foot plot just for you .
- absurdist, on 09/08/2008, -0/+8So now you have two accounts, nasty, old boy? one as nasty and one as ridgeliner?
- zephc, on 09/08/2008, -1/+9God, this election is even more ridiculous than 2004 and 2000.
This is a complete circus! It's hard not to get bent out of shape about the insanity of it all.
People would rather bitch and moan about flags than talk about:
- war & foreign policy
- our falling dollar
- government pork
- poverty
- racism
BUT OH NO! A FLAG!!1
***** recockulous. ***** McCain, ***** Palin, ***** Giuliani, and ***** every stupid ***** at the RNC who LOLed at their lies and *****. I hope you all die in a fire! - jknevitt, on 09/08/2008, -0/+8Source?
- samimnot, on 09/08/2008, -1/+9"Tell me why I SHOULD vote for Obama!"
Just a suggestion ;-) try educating "yourself" about actual ISSUES and where Sen. Obama and McCain stand on them, first. At that point you won't need anyone to do your homework for you. - enantiodromia, on 09/08/2008, -1/+8I have a serious question for the Conservatives who believe this is in fact true:
If you found out this were in fact, not true, and was in fact a made up story crafted to gain a few votes even though it was a known fabrication, would you be:
a. less outraged than you are at the Democrats who allegedly did this
b. the same outraged as you are at the Democrats who allegedly did this
c. more outraged than you are at the Democrats who allegedly did this
and please, be truthful, this is for posterity -
