- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+252As a republican, ive been really confused lately by the administration suddenly saying "we've never been 'stay the course'" - wtf, yes you have! I may be conservative, but im not ignorantly so. Do they really think people are so stupid as to forget that they were staying "stay the course" just last month?!
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -12/+96As an outsider to American politics, I've always wondered why changing your view based on the latest information is seen as a bad thing. It happened to John Kerry last time around - he changed his vote based on new information, and was forever branded a flip-flopper. Now in the case of Bush, this is simply lying. They are clearly pretending he never said it when he obviously did. But if he had said 'OK, that wasn't working so we're changing strategy', he'd be a flip-flopper too.
So, why is it that changing your plan of action according to new information is a bad thing? It puzzles me.
On another note, do any political ads in the US actually focus on what the relevant party can do, rather than what the other party can't or isn't doing? It'd be nice to hear some positive advertising for once rather than simply pointing out flaws in the other side. - noodlez, on 10/12/2007, -8/+90the only thing that would've made it better is one of those zooming text things saying "who's waffling now?" :p
in all seriousness, i would've had a lot more respect for him if he would've sucked it up, bit the bullet, and said that the stay the course wasn't working and they're gonna alter the course a bit, instead of blatantly lying. - fluffhead42, on 10/12/2007, -21/+99Awesome ad.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+69Uh...How is "stay the course" and "we've never been stay the course" spin? They are polar opposites of each other, yet Bush somehow reconciles both positions.
You know what that's called when John Kerry does it? FLIP FLOP.
Flip flop, waffle, flippity flop, Bush is a flip flopper. - shamblett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44Digg has never been about 'stay the course'.
- jonkeegan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40Digging this is the equivalent of a big media buy...the number of people who will see this ad is huge...and it doesnt cost a penny!
- jiminoc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39Digg needs to stay the course
- drlloyd11, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35Wow...
I'll chip in to air this one. - ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -9/+39What he meant is not the point. His latest comments about how they "don't say that" and it was "never the plan", when obviously it was parroted by every insider in the White House including the President himself, is the issue.
- rad4Christ, on 10/12/2007, -12/+40Aye, it's a good ad, except it lacks what the Dems have lacked all along. What exactly will the Democrats do to change the policy to bring our troops home safely while leaving Iraq in a secure state?
That's the only reason I haven't rallied behind them. All this anti-bush rhetoric is great (and to some extent true), but without an effective policy, you're asking us to vote for change for change sake. What if your policy is worse? I mean, how do we know? Politics SHOULD be about stating policies to affect change, not just complain that current policies suck. - Civil44, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33-dan
you don't think it convenient that suddenly the definition of stay the course is there concern?
I like how they gave themselves some wiggle room in there political doublespeak. Bastards. - noodlez, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29@dancpsu
i must've missed the memo where he decided to change the meaning of the rhetorical words he used.
there any other important changes like that which i missed? perhaps "cut and run" now means "hugs and kisses" - cramtod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24So "stay the course" is not the same as "stay the course"?
I guess that would depend on what the definition of "is" is. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26Even as a Republican, I definitely don't want to see another Bush in office after next election, he has some real nerve to simply deny saying he had a 'stay the course' plan.
George Bush has been saying that we should stay untill we finish, reports say the Iraq war is creating more terrorists, if you follow that logic, we will never leave...
You really have to think though, what the hell would you have done? Next election we need a very intelligent person to be put into office, whether it means Barack Obama, or John McCain we NEED a change of administration! - Chebyshev, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Did you watch it or not?
- wild, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26They missed the best zing of all. A clip of Bush talking about John Kerry, saying "He is a flip-flopper."
- jonkeegan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24Well, any kind of political ad is always going to be classifiable as spin, but I think that it says a lot about this administration, where message is everything. For them to flatly deny that "stay the course" was their strategy speaks volumes about how they run the country's business. And for them to change their rhetoric now, in such a clumsy way weeks from an election where they face defeat is pretty remarkable, and I think makes for fair political fodder - thus a good political ad.
- Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26The lesser of two evils, son, the lesser of two evils.
- rtini, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19... so by "stay the course" Bush meant "not stay the course"? How clever.
- rtini, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Um, the point is that our current Republican leaders are lying hypocrites. The videos catch them red-handed.
- cogen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18"He should just bomb the country into a parking lot. Problem solved."
You're kidding, right? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18To everybody saying "where's the democrat's plan?"
It's a ***** ONE MINUTE political ad! They are not gonna lay out an entire strategy for the complicated mess in Iraq in a one minute attack ad. If you wanna know where democrats stand on the issue of Iraq, look them up individually on wikipedia. - crystallinity, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18"I didn't see any proof in that video that disproved what our president said at the end. We've never been 'stay the course' and we'll never be 'stay the course'. I can't believe you left-wing nuts trying to mash words and make the president look like a liar. When will the democrats learn that these dishonest tactics will never work"
Assuming you actually watched the video, after reading your reply, I don't see any proof that you have the cognitive abilities to interpret the basic meanings of speech, or recognize the repetition of a phrase and apparent contradictions to that phrase.
"stay the course"
"we will stay the course"
"we have to stay the course"
"we're gonna stay the course"
"america will stay the course"
"we're there to stay the course"
"yet we must stay the course"
"it is absolutely essential that we stay the course"
"the citizens of iraq need to know that we will stay the course"
....
"we've NEVER BEEN been 'stay the course'..." - tpodr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19I looked into how and when the President and the White House used this phrase.
Risking all and doing a White House search on "Stay the Course", I find the following in the 154 results found.
http://theplaceofdeadroads.blogspot.com/2006/10/stay-course.html
And that is only from the first 40 of the query hits. For these 40 hits, I found 23 meaningful citations including "stay the course," for a total of 44 usages of the phrase.
And they span the time from 2003 to present, it is not a matter of then it made sense, but now it doesn't. They have always said "Stay the Course" - Chebyshev, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20Should they outline their plan for the country in a 1 minute spot? Or should you do some research on your own?
- russvan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Yeah, it is a pretty low budget/"1st year of film school" ad, but that's what I think makes it so cool. The fact that the ad could have been made for pennies with a free program like iMovie, yet is still as effective if not more effective than many of the big budget flashy commercials that we are used to just underlines how good this ad is. Well done.
- tankko, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Yeah, too bad this isn't a real ad that will air on TV.
I always liked this one (bumper sticker I saw):
"Help Restore the Republican Party to Greatness...Vote Democrat in 2006".
-- paid for by the people who are sick of these so-called republicans - there, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18LMAO.
We've all had the opporuntity of seeing the results of self-proclaimed rightwing "eilite" in unrestricted operation. Failed war, massive deficits and a dramatic increase in the gap between wealthy and middleclass.
However now I'm waiting for rightwingers to eventually start arguing that Bush's policies of massive increases in military spending and taxcuts... were in fact the ideas of the left.
Buried in 3.... 2.... 1.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Dude, I'm a Republican, and i'm telling you to give up defending Bush, You don't need to stay the course.
- deesnutz, on 10/12/2007, -10/+20Bush, Cheney & Snow think they can do Jedi Mind tricks on America ..
America: But you said, "Stay the course".
Bush & Co: No we didn't.
America: What about Iraq with all the WMDs?
Bush & Co: Iraq isn't about WMDs, its about delivering freedom.
America: You implied a connection with Saddam and 9/11.
Bush & Co: Don't be ridiculous, there's no connection between Saddam and 9/11.
And Bush called Kerry a "flip-flopper". Ironic isn't it.
In a word, if you will ...
Republican,
it's what the word "IDIOT" use to mean. - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14@Monolith2:
``Do they really think people are so stupid as to forget that they were staying "stay the course" just last month?!``
Yes. - tEhKewleSt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@tizz66
To answer your question - No, US political ads do not focus on policy or positive things that a canidate can personally do. They focus on smearing the other canidate, and whomever can smear the most without crossing a line that eventually turns voters off too much wins.
It's a big game of media Red Rover, and it's ridiculous. - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Good ad, but it's hard to beat that Michael J. Fox Stem Cell research ad, espcially since republicans are calling it "in poor taste" for Fox to come out in support of the research. Poor taste indeed, I suppose he should go off and die quietly on the altar of their christian fundamentalist policy decisions.
- johnnyrocket, on 10/12/2007, -25/+34Hmmm, this article has 412 diggs, but only 252 views from YouTube.
Something fishy going on there. - interiot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14It's pretty good. It's unfortunate that there's an obvious response ("so democrats suggest a change in policy... so what change are they suggesting?"), but the answer to that is too complicated for even an hour show, let alone a 30 second ad. Other than that, yeah, it's a great message.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15"Only in America"
Oh yeah, Europeans are immune to electing ***** leaders. You must come from an alternate dimension where we didn't fight two World Wars because of their electoral *****. - willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"Now, there are some who would like to rewrite history—revisionist historians is what I like to call them."

Now, if they finished the video with him saying that, it would be a slam dunk - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17We are not at war with eurasia, we are at war with eastasia
(i am suprised nobody beat me to it) - ddales, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12What's really good is a lot of people get upset by ads and marketing campaigns from both sides.
What's really bad is what do they do about it?
Sit home on their fat American asses, don't go out and vote, and then bitch about EVERYTHING they don't like about a government they refused to prevent.
I have voted in every election since 1984. Good or bad, I made my move. Now you make yours! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Democrats 2006 Platform: "Vote for us because we're not Bush. We really really hope thats enough because we got nuttin else."

"It's silly talking about how many years we will have to spend in the jungles of Vietnam when we could pave the whole country and put parking stripes on it and still be home for Christmas."
Right on, time to pave Iraq! - iamasas, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11this was in jest right?
- Dmatias, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9545 diggs, 252 views.
I guess this ad is more powerful then i thought - zeiben, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16"What if your policy is worse? "
First of all, I've heard great plans offered, but even without them, it would be hard to come up with something worse than what is going on now. The point is that when you have screwups in office, you toss them. It's called accountability. If the democrats can't settle on a good plan and make things better, we toss them, too, but you don't reward incompetence, spinelessness, and deception at that level with another term - migbike, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Or Libertarian instead of Republican for that matter.
- ckohler, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Every human being makes mistakes, even presidents. We shouldn't fault an elected official when they adapt to changing circumstances or attempt to correct a previous bad decision.
However, Bush has contended that he's not made a mistake in the face of obvious evidence and worse, when he does decide to change his position on an issue he lies and says he's not. This is so much worse than simply making a mistake or flip-flopping on an issue. It's lying. Someone can flip-flop a thousand times for all I care, but the moment they lie to my face they've lost all credibility. - thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Well said.
I know I personally was proud 2 years ago to have to wait 30 minutes before I could vote. I usually have been able to just waltz right in and vote with now delay at all. - theobell, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Is this guy serious? Does he really think people will just forget that he has said "Stay the course" five million times?
- Hayes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Here is another democrat ad of the same style.
