....He leaves for Iraq again in 3 days - hambend, on 10/12/2007, -3/+89Why? Because the Bush administration's policies have absolutely no connection to reality.
- realitybased, on 10/12/2007, -10/+91There has GOT to be a way we can blame Clinton for this.
- vuzman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+83Anything to avoid a draft. They don't want to draft until after the Iran war has started.
- allaboutdatiki, on 10/12/2007, -4/+77Why are they forcing soldiers that are not physically capable back into combat? Just to make numbers?
- JoeRandom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+75"Master Sgt. Jenkins, 42, has a degenerative spine problem and a long scar down the back of his neck where three of his vertebrae were fused during surgery"
THREE vertebrae. This guy probably can't look down to his feet while standing up straight. He shouldn't be going back. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+73Where are all the Bush apologists?! Where have these idiots gone?!
Never forget who supported this failure, don't let them distance themselves from him. Whining about Libs and Dems and Clinton and Kerry and gay sex, while offering nothing of substance - and most notably - no defense for the lying little sack of ***** from Texas they shackled us with!
America's enemy is the idiot who IGNORES that Bush lied to us about Iraq, IGNORES that Bush defends treason, IGNORES that Bush was asleep at the wheel on 9/11, IGNORES that Bush had already blundered our war effort in Iraq, IGNORES that Bush still tries to link Iraq and 911, IGNORES that Bush was going to run amok with our Constitution and still voted to re-elect this miserable failure.
The enemy from within has perpetuated this death and devastation. Don't forget it.
It is because of a bush voter that the country is in the atrocious position it is in today. - littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -6/+71Sad and pathetic. I'm ashamed.
- chopenik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+57No. They simply don't care.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+57You go to war with the army you have not the army you want.
Of course if you actually START the ***** war yourself on an arbitrary day in 2003 it might be a ***** GOOD IDEA to make sure you actually have the troops and equipment to back it up.
Im sure the next stage will be sending back dead soldiers - anything to make it look like the Bush administration doesn't support the draft - that way when they've ***** things up enough and gone through every other ***** option, the Democrats will come in and will be FORCED to call a draft simply because by that time everything else will have been tried and will have failed and America will have already started a war with Iran and will have China on its back looking for an opportunity. - elsalgo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+49Americans should support their troops period.

If the US doesn't have enough troops to occupy Iraq > rebellion strengthens, US population demoralizes, more deaths, more no-go area's in Iraq > Oil production suffers > Oil prices worldwide go up > Americans living in subsurbs can't afford oil anymore > Housing crisis > Chinese stop investing in the US > Dollar collapses > OPEC stops using dollar as reserve currency > US can't pay its debts > US goes more or less bankrupt > US population starts voting OTHER parties than democrat/republican corporate shills or require actual democratic reform.
This chain of events is a little more complex in the real world but the big lines are unavoidable. The US is on the verge of collapse, the world is on the verge of a Crisis bigger than the one in the 1930s. It can get real ugly and the US government and corporate elite is desperate. - Templeofjava, on 10/12/2007, -2/+42Being in the military myself and being lucky so far, if this were me...I WOULD MAKE DAMN SURE MY ASS WOULD STAY PUT! Its news like this that needs the utmost attention by all sources. To me this is right up there with the Walter Reed issue and should not be ignored.
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39When Clinton brought up the Bin Laden issue, he was accused of trying to divert everyone's attention from the more important issue of his personal sex life and the witch-hunt of inappropriate questioning and false impeachment over it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+41@realitybased
Let's see what a right-wing extremist would say...
When Clinton went after bin Laden, Republicans noted that Clinton was obsessed with catching Osama. So clearly Clinton forced Republicans to ignore bin Laden, thus causing 9/11, which in turn forced Glorious Leader Bush to go to Iraq to fight the terrorists there. But those damn liberals, at Clinton's behest, keep hating America's troops, thereby keeping enlistment numbers down, forcing the military to take measures like this.
So you see, it's all Clinton's fault. Expect to see this on Fox News, the only fair and balanced news source in America! - wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38Draft the twins!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35George Bush is so short sighted he cant see more than 3 seconds into the future, and they still let him be president.
- rbanffy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33Actually, I am not convinced he remembers anything 3 seconds in the past...
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28good to know we can trust the government to support our troops.....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26No, they will go to war with Iran and put America at risk and then in a year or so when the Democrats get in, they'll have to institute a draft just to stop America getting its ass kicked. Of course the Democrats will be blamed for this and the next term will see the Republicans back in power, by that time the crisis will be averted and they will be able to 'stop the draft' thus being heroes.
Its kind of like someone shouting across to the biggest tough-guy in the bar "hey! this guy here (points to you) says your mum is a whore" then he runs away and calls the cops - by the time they get there they see you holding a stool or something as a weapon and the tough guy lying on the floor. And yes, the American public ARE that stupid. - diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24The Admin is breaking the Military that they base their foreign policy on. It's ironic that GW and Cheney - two men who did everything that they could to avoid Vietnam - are responsible for demanding more than extraordinary service from the troops. If we are staying in Iraq much longer, we will need a draft. Asking those who have served two, three, or four tours in Iraq, to continue without any sacrifice by other Americans, is immoral.
- rbanffy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26If 9/11 were a government job, they would require 8 more planes and would miss all targets.
- davesbrain, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27True enough, a hunt that cost us almost $100 million and all they came up with was a stained dress. Now they say we shouldn't investigate Bush because it'll detract from the important work ahead. ***** hypocrite politicians.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22> "Why are they forcing soldiers that are not physically capable back into combat? Just to make numbers?"
They have to do something with them while they clean up the Walter Reed National Army Medical Center. *cough* - onionizer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23dude, you should stop watching south park for a little while..
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22"Yeah he shouldn't, but you should. It's your time to serve your country now. And btw I'm not american, *****."
Ah, yes, that's a great plan. Let's all volunteer to fight in an illegal war that the majority of Americans don't support. Brilliant! That will show 'em. I think the point here, my foreign friend, is that no one wants us fighting this war at all and we're expressing some disgust at the state of our nation. A lot of people don't understand how we ended up here and are just now trying to figure out where we, as a country, should be trying to go next. It's a sad, sad, sad, situation for the troops who are stuck in the middle of it all, but that doesn't mean we should prop up the current system in order to save those few some hardship. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19The Bush administration has shown that supporting the troops and saying that you support them are two very different things. Bush keeps asserting that criticism of him and the war in Iraq somehow undermines the soldiers, but I have yet to hear a single Democrat who doesn't honor the sacrifice the soldiers make. Meanwhile, Republicans are content to consider that sacrifice as nothing more than a way to make Bush into a glorious war-time president.
So tell me again, who REALLY supports the troops? - CaptainStone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Selective Service law is the biggest discriminatory law on the books against men. If a man does not register, he forfeits all access to government student grants and loans for College. He is not eligible to be employed by the government. And he is subject to be involuntarily brought onto active duty. Yet women are not required to perform this simple action and do not have to worry about any consequences.
I was already on active duty when my parents sent me the threatening letter from the Selective Service about not registering. I showed it to my CO who just laughed. Eventually, I was automatically assigned a Selective Service number but I never registered myself. The fact that I now have a number only came to light when I had to renew my clearance and was required to provide my number.
Get rid of Selective Service or make it an equal requirement and consequences for males and females. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Short Answer: Because Dick Cheney would be the President.
- hechtal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I'm not suprised by this at all. I'm a veteran of two tours (btw I joined before 9/11, I thought I would skate through an enlistment and get free college), and I overwhelmingly feel like the troops have been betrayed by the people we swore to protect. Taken advantage of, abused, and left to rot pretty much sums it up. The press only picks up such a small ammount of the stories of hardship and misery.
- CaptainStone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I agree with you. And to take action, I have a scheduled meeting with my Senator this week. I am taking the entire day off using annual leave.
I wish to discuss an issue that is more harmful than the living conditions at Walter Reed. I am going to discuss the nightmare that is a Medical Evaluation Board (MEB). How you become a Leopard to everyone when you are saddled with this category. How your career is pretty much over and how adversarial the process it truly is. Your career is forfeit when the worst answer comes back; "Fit for Duty, Not World Deployable". Sorry, I can't deploy but I'm fit for duty? Can't deploy, can't compete for promotion. Can't get promoted, can't stay till retirement because of being forced out for being passed over.
If the Senator can fix what happened to me, great. More importantly, I want us to fix a broken system so those on active duty are treated better as a whole person and career. - darkstar949, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14@danielgary - While it is true that you sign up to do "the lawful orders of the officers appointed over me" you still have a few token rights while in the military - and one of those is the right to reject an unlawful order. In fact there was a situation awhile back where 17 solders refused to do a convoy citing that the equipment they were using was unsafe [1]. I can't seem to find any follow ups about it, but from what I understand they had some valid concerns about the safety of their equipment and while you can't refuse to charge a hill if properly equipped (lawful order) you can refuse if they want you to charge a machine gun nest with a water gun (unlawful order).
In this case things sound very suspicious in that you normally do not deploy people with back problems - they are a clear cut case for "Not fit for world wide duty" and are typically given either a medical discharge or a medical retirement. Plus, if you are forward deployed to Iraq you are pretty much assured that you will be wearing you body armor at some point (even if you have a desk job) which is one of the reasons why some people cannot be deployed worldwide.

- Iriel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14The worst part about this is watching the news clip of Bush saying "This war started on my watch, but it'll end on your watch."
I understand that wars take time to finish. Wars aren't pretty, and I accept that, but I utterly hate that he started a war and told the nation it'd be practically over in a week yet he planned of handing it over to us while he'll go back to his lovely Texas ranch. - Hallik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Why hasn't someone come up and tried to impeach this man? The one thing we need to do to end our misery, is to show the world that we are NOT pawns by bringing down the man responsible for our demise. Impeachment should be easy, how the hell did we impeach Clinton so easily because of his office fling? There must be some sort of paperwork; Bush has admitted to more than 1 crime, on paper it should stick. There is no denying that "x" is the law and Bush did "y." He can not hide a damn thing because verbal confessions and records of speeches exist. If there is no way for the ordinary man to start the process, then God help us all, they have taken away the only thing we can do, that and protest, but you can never see any large numbers at a protest in D.C., this ain't your Vietnam era.
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16@copperfalcon
"but I have yet to hear a single Democrat who doesn't honor the sacrifice the soldiers make. "
Somehow, it seems that the issue is not really about honor, though.
It is an incredible tragedy and a travesty that all those boys are 'being sacrificed'...just for the greedy lies of a few dirty old men, who are lining their pockets with blood- money.
The fact that it is somehow permitted to continue is a dishonor on all of us and on the entire world. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Registering for Selective Service is the law, regardless of whether or not you plan on joining the army. Being medically unfit for duty does not grant you exception to it..
- mcfriendly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14If all the RIGHT-WING BUSH ARM CHAIR WARRIORS would enlist this war and debate would be over. Trade in your X-Box and get a real tank. It might not be so easy to get a second life or a new limb if you have to do it in person!
- eunosx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13After serving for 5 1/2 years on active duty I was released and classified by the VA as 30% permanently disabled. A few months later (Christmas Eve to be exact) I received a mailgram stating that I was being recalled, even though the Reserve recruiter said I was worthless to them. *Note* I had all of the cartilage removed from my left ankle and the fluid sacs in both of my hips are ruptured causing the bones to grind together.
I went through a battle with the Army for the next year which caused me to have a 2nd reconstructive surgery done to my ankle because the initial decision by the board was that I could still go and my appeal case was ending. Luckily, due to the surgery and the fact that I had good administrative soldiers working on my case (I am so grateful to them) I made it to my IRR ETS date and 2 weeks later received official word that I was released completely.
I often wondered how many others this would affect, unfortunately now I'm starting to get a clearer picture - schniff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I was supposed to go in the service after high school. I was told I was medically unfit for duty. This is when I was 17 years old when I was told this, I am now 20. I got a letter about three weeks ago saying that I did not register for selective service I would have my proverbial balls busted by the govt. for the rest of my life.
Now, two years after I was "supposed" to register for selective service, two years after I was supposed to have shipped out, they finally decide to send me a letter? If they already denied me for service, the point of registering would be...? I don't know, may be it is me being paranoid but that letter is a little unsettling to me, especially after reading this article. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -31/+44@dirkvanass
"My friend just got back because after clearing a building an insurgent hidden in the attic..."
Just remember that when you use the term 'insurgent', you are using a propaganda word, part of the NewSpeak!
there's a great movie about how language is manipulated to dehumanize "the enemy', throughout history. it is called
"Axis Of Evil...Perforated Praeter Naturam"...and includes a collage of stamp-art from around the world, while exploring the concept of 'evil' as it is used by by governments throughout history, to manipulate the public sentiment.
Sorry about your friend. Please avoid indulging in the new-speak-propaganda machine whenever you can. - Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18"Please avoid indulging in the new-speak-propaganda machine whenever you can."
QFT. Though I doubt a comment on digg will make any difference. - raines00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I was in the military and have seen this happen first hand. I was a nurse treating a patient who had suffered a massive heart attack during PT. After two months this man could barely walk from his car to the hospital he would have to stop and rest every 30ft.
I saw him in the hospital and asked how he was doing, he informed me that he somehow had been given a clean bill of health and would be returning to duty the next day. He was trying to find his doctor to ask what was happening. I witnessed the same doctor who insisted that this man must retire just two months ago explain that he had made a full recovery would be going back to duty to include PT. We are talking about a man who couldn't walk down the hospital hallway without help. I reported the doctor to the IG, called the Base Commander's hot line, and called the Airman's Rights Association on the patients behalf.
To my amazement the doctor was retired about a year later, but I immediately went from being a surgical nurse to cleaning up ***** for two years and was denied reenlistment not to mention some adverse paperwork. The patient, was thankfully not required to do PT the next day and is now medically retired and doing well (last I heard).
I despise the military, and not just because of one pig doctor, I could go on and on with these kinds of stories. I got to see first hand how much the military cares about it's people. Being denied reenlistment was the best thing that ever happened to me. I've been able to support the troops more now than I ever could have when I was in the military. Sad. - spearce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I'm sure the female soldier with the separated discs and degenerative spine condition could pull my unconscious gear laden body out of a burning HMMV and still find the time to put rounds down range.
this ***** is a crime but its nothing new.
what every single one these soldiers needs to do when they get in theater is go to sick call and see a doctor who is in country. The doctors here can send them to Iraq but the doctors there can send them right back home. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14You also swore to protect the constitution..
