- someoneno1, on 03/30/2008, -2/+72If you live in Texas, call your local representatives to let them know you support this measure.
If you don't know why this is important, please read this article on Scientology by Time Magazine:

Scientology charges members $300,000 dollars for services & is allowed by the IRS to claim them for tax purposes!

- Aethirig, on 03/30/2008, -8/+54congratulations, Texas, on being goddamn awesome. It feels really weird to say that, but oh well :D
- educatedrodent, on 03/30/2008, -4/+50It's about time the US government started to react to the fact that a group demands thousands of dollars in "mandatory donations" from it's clients; as these clients lose their homes is not a group that needs extra funding from the government to assist their work in the community.
Harriet Baker - from Time Magazine's article "Cult of Greed and Power"
Six years in court and not one judge believed the magazine had defamed COS. 17 pages, There are more crimes in that story than the fate of Mrs Baker. - Aethirig, on 03/30/2008, -4/+50I hope the followup piece is titled "thank you Texas, for doing the right thing."
- Karai, on 03/30/2008, -11/+56Don't mess with footb- erm, Texas!

- AnonymousCTX, on 03/30/2008, -6/+44Christianity and Islam do not charge for their religions. They do not break up families. The list can go on and on.

COS WON'T BE COS IN TEXAS - spyd3rweb, on 03/30/2008, -5/+31Bush is from Connecticut. Don't let the cowboy charade fool you.
- rebotfc, on 03/30/2008, -4/+28Scientology isn't a religion, it's a business.
- Tangaroa, on 03/30/2008, -1/+24It was adopted by Precinct 341 of Senatorial District 11 in Texas, not by the Texas Legislature or the Texas Republican Party. And there's only one 's' in Texas.
- skippy17, on 03/30/2008, -4/+27Don't get so excited yet folks. Though this is a good thing, it is merely a resolution at a county convention. It is in no way actual legislation, just a step in the right direction.
My county, while supporting creationism (sigh), passed a resolution to not support the Republican candidate for president. - tcardone05, on 03/30/2008, -2/+24Had they not blurred those three names, they would mysteriously disappear by Monday.
- DaBombDiggity, on 03/30/2008, -6/+27You go, Texas!!
- Anonakitty, on 03/30/2008, -0/+20Indianballer24
Scientology is NOT a religion , even according to its founder LRH ,
its a business posing as one .
Hence our being happy at it getting its tax exempt status taken away..
Its a global pyramid scheme preying on the vulnerable using NLP , brainwashing and hypnosis

- logandurand, on 03/30/2008, -4/+22Now let's take the next step and revoke exemption for ALL religious organizations.
- sl9sl9, on 03/30/2008, -0/+16Woosh.

- iloggedinjust4u, on 03/30/2008, -5/+19Who gives a *****?
I might not know anybody that lost a family member or friend to this "Religion," but there are still plenty of them out there. Abuses have been commited, and it takes a fairly worthless human being to stand by and say "Who gives a *****."
There may be other things out there that WE should be attending to, but everyone involved believes that this is a cause worth fighting for. Do you fight for something? Do you step away form your computer for anything/anyone beside yourself? - cyranthus, on 03/30/2008, -5/+19***** yeah!
- Obzerva, on 03/30/2008, -5/+19***** FINALLY!!!
- educatedrodent, on 03/30/2008, -0/+13Has any other church made people mortgage their homes to raise money for their tithes before receiving grief counseling? Harriet Baker lost her home which had been mortgage free when they first approached her after her husbands death.
- itsradBrad, on 03/30/2008, -2/+14Yet another reason I'm proud to be a Texan.
- dizturbd2, on 03/30/2008, -4/+16Now we can report their atrocities to the Better Business Bureau!
- tmyprod, on 03/30/2008, -0/+12And now CoS will try to issue lawsuits to everyone in Texas.
- ithejosh, on 03/30/2008, -5/+17I like how whenever its about Texas, people give a lot of lame phrases about how Texas is awesome... unless its something negative about them...
- Patrikimo, on 03/30/2008, -0/+12I think you misunderstand the purpose of taxes: taxes pay for services, Religious organizations drive on roads, they expect to be protected by the police and fire depts, these are all valid services that must be paid for. And some certainly do get money from the government in the form of faith based initiative programs. I don't get "state money" and I still have to pay these things.
With all that being said, if a religious organization is truly non-profit, I don't mind giving them tax-exemption as a non-profit org, but so many churches now have turned into profit making enterprises and it's stupid to give them tax exempt status, when they make more money than many small businesses, I think it's time to treat them as a business. CoS has done this as have many more main stream religious organizations. - kinerry, on 03/30/2008, -12/+23Ron Paul is from Texas, that made up for it and then some
- inactive, on 03/30/2008, -1/+12the Corporation of Scientology!
