- fober, on 10/12/2007, -10/+190Hey, wait a second, there's no numbe...
I see what you did there. - flernk, on 10/12/2007, -12/+117I'm so tired of this angle from Obama haters. The guy has written two New York Time Best Sellers, has won a Grammy for one of those books, spells out his stances clearly on his own social networking website, has sponsored some of the most specific bills in the Senate regarding health care, the Iraq war, tax relief for the middle class, and government corruption, not to mention the guy gives countless speeches and interviews and has an open -door policy in his D.C. office.
Only the dumb don't know Obama's position on important issues. - JCSaint, on 10/12/2007, -7/+111akaji,
He made all his money recently on the sale of his last two books. On their financial disclosure forms, they listed assets between $500k and $2 million. Most Senators have vastly more wealth than him. - hipnerd, on 10/12/2007, -10/+109@Akaji: "And that somehow makes it alright for anyone to claim that the poor need to be taken care of all the while having more luxuries than the average middle-class citizen?"
To answer your question directly. Yes, he can have wealth and still be concerned about the poor. I don't understand why that would be a difficult concept to grasp. - joelmole, on 10/12/2007, -5/+56akaji,
I don't think being wealthy and wanting to help the poor are mutually exclusive. In fact, the wealthy are often in the best position to give back to the poor. - MarkCiccone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+52Actually I love playing scrabble, I just got done playing a game with my mom. My girlfriend is on her way to stay over for the weekend, and we'll be playing when she gets here. I digg Barack a whole lot more, Scrabble rocks AND he likes John Coltrane? If only politics were a popularity game...
Oh wait.. haha... they are. - str3ama, on 10/12/2007, -15/+51this is the first time I can honestly say that I actually like one of the candidates. Usually I'm forced to vote for who I hate least, but Obama seems more down to Earth - and while I doubt that he'll be able to solve America's problems, I think he won't create more like certain presidents in the past.
My #1 candidate is still Ralph Nader - green party all the way! But if you want to make your vote count, Obama seems like a very good candidate IMO> - sergeantmudd, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4111. His house isn't even that nice but since it's in Chicago and isn't a condo, it can't cost less than a million.
- emiller, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35some of you guys sound like you work for Fox News.
- d00ley, on 10/12/2007, -6/+34Quality hasn't been a requirement the Presidency for quite some time. Why start now?
- JCSaint, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Obamanation? sounds too much like abomination.... you might want to rethink your slogan....
- JCSaint, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24It's always been "American Idol."
Clinton: Boxers or Briefs on MTV.
Reagan: He was an actor.
Kennedy: It was all about being young and vibrant. Everyone hears about how people though Kennedy won the debate when they watched it but thought Nixon won when they heard it on the radio (Kennedy wore TV makeup, Nixon didn't and he sweat under the lights.)
Even FDR understood the power of appearances and refused to be photographed in his wheelchair (The media actually complied with that request. Imagine if something like this happened today? He'd be all over the National Inquirer.) - BlinderBomber, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Regardless of his experience, this is the time to run. He's young, passionate, and outspoken. He's seen as someone who is both within the system and, at the same time, a refreshing change from the 'normal.' Four or eight or twelve more years of serving as a senator will only make him older and give his opponents a longer voting record which they can attack him on. If he waits he will either face an incumbent Republican (which could be good or bad, but would still be incumbent) or would have to wait until at least 2016 to run. Neither of those options should be very appealing to him. Instead he's entering a race at a time where there is widespread dissatisfaction with the current Republican administration and has emerged as one of the two leading candidates. It's a smart move for him and I don't really think the lack of experience will defeat him.
- ropers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Because for once quality actually happens to be on offer?
- SuperMoonMan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20"2. He says he hasn't liked ice cream since working at Baskin-Robbins as a teenager."
And he honestly expects my vote? - kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19And Lincoln had experience . . .
- ropers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2011. Obama's also Irish: http://digg.com/politics/Obama_s_heritage_traced_to_Ireland
- kingace, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23"His childhood nickname was Barry."
In related news, a man named Timothy's childhood nickname was Tim. - skyfire1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Pretty soon he'll find out that his real father is Irish. He will go to Ireland and beat his dad in a drinking contest by a small margin. I know how these things turn out. :)
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17He's not black. A black woman on Colbert said so, so it must be true.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16any choice is better than clinton, she's going to get back at america for all those bill jokes
- Misos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16"... has won a Grammy for one of those books...."
That must've been one damned good book. - twertyto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17That was the most boring thing I read all day.
- YoshoKatana, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I haven't heard him sing yet. How good is he?
- brutalentropy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I prefer obamarama
- ropers, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18You know, I agree.
With your username.
All you're doing is breaking wind. - Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14IANACRL, but I'm pretty sure you have to be related to slavery to get reparations.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15he's black?!
- minox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13This article was a little too hard-hitting. Give Barack a break already.
- armynixon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16He gets cool points for being a scrabble geek and liking john coltrane, but baskin robbins is still good.
- jivatmanx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@akaji
Indeed, I feel that since he only came into decent money relatively recently, of his own accord, and is still far poorer than most senators, I feel that he can relate to the vast majority of americans who are middle class, as well as higher-class young americans who came into wealth because of buisnesses they started.
He also had a few failed investments in the past; proving that he's not doing the crappy corrupt insider trading that's so part of the washington establishment.
He's an excellent candidate IMHO. I really hope he beats out Hillary, who
1. Recently said "The vast-right wing conspiracy is back"
2. Won't take a position on whether gays are immoral
3. personally said she WILL STAY in iraq
4. Smug, highly unlikeable, not particularly worldly, intelligent, or down-to-earth. - JCSaint, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13drexle,
While true Senatorial experience isn't the same as experience in an executive office such as Governor or Mayor, the issues being dealt with by a Senator on, say the Foreign Relations Committee, would be much more relevant than a property tax debate on a state or local level. I've heard of Richardson referred to as the "Resume Candidate" (It's insane, look it up.) but he doesn't have the gravitas of an Obama. It's a tough field with each candidate having a strong area and a weak area. - Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13No, but fox news is their only source of information on Obama.
I'm not sure if i'll vote for him, but because I disagree with his stance on some key issues, not because he's "inexperienced" - dankCIA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12"9. Obama and his wife bought a house on Chicago's South Side in June 2005 for $1.65 million. It has four fireplaces."
To everyone bitching about the price tag. Just because he bought a house that was that price does not necessarily mean he went paid for the upfront in cash (although maybe he could have). Banks do this crazy thing where they lend you money to buy a house and you repay it plus interest. It's call a mortgage, ask your parents about it. I'm sure they have one. - AdmiralAdama, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17Obamamania?
- boombye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10In Pakistan all the Christian kids goto schools run by Muslims since they run all the private schools. Even the all the rich kids who are Christian goto schools over run by Muslims. This is common in Indonesia where they have the largest Muslim population. You'd be hard pressed not to find a private school that wasn't run by Muslims, even if the school is full of people of many different nationalities. This report about it being a radical school was brought up by Fox News Corp. and was later dismissed by the other big networks. Seems like you only watch one station for your 'facts'.
For example I went to a Catholic school growing up, but we had plenty of kids who weren't Catholic, they were just placed in our school to avoid being put in a much worse school. By the time I hit junior high I didn't care for religion and loathed going to Church and saw organized religion as a scam and a form of control over the masses... I mean I wasn't even in jr high yet and I came to this revelation on my own and with no influence, because I had absolutely loved my faith but hated the contradictions that came along with it. So what if he was raised a Muslim? I mean he made a choice in his life to convert to Christianity at one point or another. To say that he converted and ABANDONED the Muslim faith to become Christian pretty much says it all. If he were to abandon a strict religion such as that, to become a member of another religion in order to deceive a majority of white christian voters who would vote Rebublican anyway, just doesn't make sense. If he is so devout to his faith, that he would pretend to be of another faith, isn't saying much about his faith at all, if anything it's like saying he doesn't care about religion which is more of a plus than being a Christian in these days in time.
Anyways the school was visited on one of the major networks, I cannot remember which one, but they actually went to the school and found no evidence of Wahabism being taught. If this were true, and hadn't been debunked in the same week the story was presented, then this would still be a major issue that his opponents would raise but can't. Fox is so hard pressed to find dirt on him that they had to spend several minutes talking about his smoking with some nobodies.
Wahabism is a Sunni thing. The Sunnis compose the majority of citizens in Iraq, while the Shi'ites are a very very small minority with most of them being foreigners from Iran. The people blamed for all the attacks in Iraq are the Sunnis, the very majority of the population there. It's like going into Boston and giving all the power to the Protestants and leaving all the Catholics out to dry. Nobody is surprised that most of the insurgent attacks were led by Sunnis since they are the majority of the population there, the only people surprised were all these people who called Arabs and Muslims racial slurs, only to be so concerned with giving them democracy when all was said and done. Sure maybe terrorists are learning about Wahabism, but you don't necessarily have to be a terrorist to learn about Wahabism. Just like you don't have to be Jewish to practice Kabbalah or something like that. You really need to stop getting all your information from Fox. Because that's the only place I've heard these stories come from, all the other stations have(or think they have) a credibility that they actually try to maintain. Fox doesn't care about credibility, when they have plenty of morons who support their network and it's producers' goals.
What form of Christianity were those who bombed abortion clinics and other acts of domestic terrorism on our soil in the 90s practicing?? Did it even matter if they were evangelist or catholic or protestant? - themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Hopefully he becomes president
- gsenechal, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Better title would have been: Obama prefers Ubuntu... Story would be #1 on Digg for weeks.
As much as I like B Obama, I think the linked story is a waste of web space. - Quadcore, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13sometimes I wished Digg could set a filter on really stupid news
- SonicAD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Nah, this is Digg, we don't like Jesus at all.

It was a damned good book. - AdmiralAdama, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13@liam76
I understand how this could raise eyebrows, but I believe this line of attack is a silly argument to make. It's not the same as belonging to a "white church". Black self-empowerment and responsibility for their community is quite commendable. - JCSaint, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15I like these posts by people like liam because it makes it easy to figure out who to block...
- AdmiralAdama, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17Let's get this to the front page and keep the Obamanation going!
- hipnerd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9He's not descended from slaves.
EDIT: tenlow beat me by seconds. - jivatmanx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Actually, he's gotten into quite a squabble with his pastor over some of wording of some of those things, although I personally have no problem with them, I can certainly see how the ignorant like you could construe them, so perhaps it was the best political choice.
- Whoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Wow he has a fire place!!!!! i hate him now!!! i only have a heater!! actually 1.65 million isnt that much considering my house is worth almost 1 million and i bought it for 350,000 about 8 years ago. Who cares if he has 4 fire place my sister has 1 because it came with the house. enyways enought with the ***** Obama OWNS!!!
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Who uses fireplaces? I just burn stuff in the driveway.
- Desslok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Buried as lame. I'm sure he's a very intelligent guy and all, but this is the biggest piece of non-news I've ever seen on Digg. I feel like it should end with "he's a Taurus, and he loves snuggling and long walks on the beach."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8While we are bringing up 10 things about Obama, I would just like to know one thing, why can't Bush speak English?
