- CrimsonBlur, on 10/11/2007, -0/+53Well he actually has a very excellent point here, despite the fact that he lacks the technical knowledge to explain it sensibly. I do understand exactly what he's talking about though, and I also wonder why you can't currently do this. All he wants is one provider, or an open and integrated service structure (like the Internet or using the Internet) that multiple providers take part in, where you can have one phone number, but multiple different types of devices access the network. You can do this currently but it's extremely expensive and basically just involves setting up forwarding services for all of your numbers, which is not a very elegant solution.
The technology to make this happen has been around for at least 5 years, if not more, the only reason it doesn't exist now is because the phone companies aren't interested in servicing the consumer as best they can, they're only interested in how much money they can suck out of them before they have to add a new minor feature and create a new buzzword for it.
I think the only reason is because the large phone companies (landline and cell alike) effectively have a mutual, multi-company monopoly on the market. These companies compete with each other on only very basic services, ensuring the illusion of competition and new features, while not really innovating or investing in new ideas, all while gouging the consumer royally for decades-old technology. - RLWaite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+35dugg for "supertubeway"
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29I lost a complete letter grade in my government class for calling this guy an idiot in a thesis... apparently the professor knew the senator.
regardless
I still stand by that. - deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -4/+32Ted Stevens should take his motorcycle for a cruz down the famous Bridge To Nowhere.
- chrisgeleven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16He actually, kinda, sorta, makes sense on this one.
Must be that investigation that the feds are doing on him. Knocking the tiniest amount of sense into him.
Ok Ted, please go back to talking about the tubes. I don't want to back your opinions anymore! - richgustavson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12I see what he's trying to say, but I suspect corporate politics would never allow it to happen. That's assuming the technology is developed to support what he is trying to explain.
- GeminiDragon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Though oddly spoken, this is by far the first thing Ted Stevens said that I agree on. Although, about 3 months ago, I canceled my lan line phone and only use my cell phone, which is not exactly related to this story, but saves me a decent amount of money a month. :)
I agree with richgustavson about the scarce chance of this happening. - johnpaul191, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10HAHAHA did anyone else notice the iChat noises? it took me a minute to realize they were in the clip and not me getting invisible messages.
- daGUY, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Lost a letter grade? You should have gotten an automatic A.
- philovivero, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Maybe Ted Stevens wants to be a corrupt politician? I suspect Ted Stevens wants the telco lobby to give him some cash so he doesn't produce some legislation enforcing number portability, WEP compatibility, and non-monopoly practices. Don't worry, telco lobby, he's actually probably pretty cheap. Maybe you can get him to shut up for about $10k?
- tehpwnrate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Not sure why people are digging you down. Gemini is right; Stevens is making a good point. Just because Stevens is not technically savvy doesn't mean he's wrong. Stevens wants a way to hook up VOIP, landline, and cell phone all into one number on one phone that he can use both around the house and on a motorcycle. I think it's a great idea.
- cagedog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I love how he ends with "I'm bad". That needs to go into a remix ASAP.
- gamerzworld, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Grades are just a series of tubes.
- GliTCH82, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7That is extremely well put and intelligent, I would Digg your comment twice if I could.
- Dougman82, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6He's got a mostly-intelligent point there. The only thing that really bugs me about this guy is that he's trying to suggest certain capabilities and implementations for technology without having the slightest idea how or why it could or couldn't work. Ted Stevens is exactly the reason why we need to get rid of career politicians.
- MewtwoReturns, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I would have protested to any higher power available about that grade. You know that in this day and age, a teacher using extreme bias in lowering a grade could probably be sued for enough to either cripple him or have you living comfortably, right?
- saleem, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6actually i think t-mobile just came out with something like this -- wireless for when youre on the road, and when you're in a recognized wi-fi spot, it switches to unlimited calls over the wifi. http://news.com.com/Switching+from+cell+to+Wi-Fi,+seamlessly/2100-1039_3-6113223.html
- quickorbit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5That was the sound of Ted Stevens whistling through his dentures.
- Timetheos, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7People like you hurt America.
- bobotheking, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It's not a big truck!
- arunforce, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5It's called GrandCentral.
- tofagerl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Forget about the tubes and focus on the fact that this time he's on to something.
- apathyduck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4follow the intertubes - http://www.grandcentral.com
- looll, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Grandcentral.com?
- LavaHot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Isn't this Grand Central? The service that Google just bought? If it is, then the capability to do that has been around for years. I remember when MCI came out with a similar Ring-To-All service back in 2000 or 2001, shortly before they went out of business.
- Hananda, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I don't know how to feel about agreeing with this guy on something.
Self-loathing, right? Maybe shame? - D4r7h3v1l, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3In fact, I think his lack of tech savvy makes it an even better point because it is a capability both the common, non-geeky person and the geek would love to have.
- oxymoron69, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3In Soviet Russia Digg spams You!
- neokyotodragon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5You don't speak for everyone in Alaska, buddy. I don't love him.
- jollyroger814, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2i love this guy so much!
- joshf52, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I don't wanna die. I just wanna ride my motorcy....cle.
"GI JOEEEE" - kindrobot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Why ride a motorcycle when you can just take a tube?
- Daevlong, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I can get paid to digg?? Where do I sign up?
- livejamie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2somebody needs to give mr stevens an invite to grandcentral :p
- Leviathan777, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I think you all are giving this guy too much credit. "Could I just decide I want to keep my wireline and I want to add wireless to it? Can I have two providers on the same number?"
Huh? I have a cordless phone already. And why would I want to pay two phone bills for one number? Does he even have the faintest idea what he's trying to say, or is he just putting words together and hoping they sound smart? - hlcno, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1omg this needs be ytmnd'd
- ScottMaximus1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Eat ***** and Die Spammer
- Torbar203, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Whenever I listen to that clip, even though I'm running XP right now, and use Adium on my Mac, I still check my IM's
- idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1featuring MC Rove
- sleepless, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually I agree with Senator Stevens on this point and also because I already do this with several of my "voip" lines around the U.S. as well as U.K. providers. When I am at home, it is on the wire/wireless. When I am at roaming about, I can make voip calls from my voip phones with any wireless access point, or through my blackberry as a tethered modem. Eventually, everyone will be a number. Logically, voip is just IM. on steroids.
What is sad is that I have been doing this for at least over a year and it only took Senator Stevens to bring it to light by accident because people think he is a joke, even though he is... - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1there was a product like this years ago in britain -- you had a unit in your home and when you were near it you'd have your cell diverted down the landline, move away and you move to cell service. i think it disappeared quietly at the end of analog cell phones -- i guess it didn't help that so many cells are dirt cheap to run and it's only outgoing calls that people are concerned about using landlines for
as for the quote? weak. i was expecting something juicier than that - tzonic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1But it could do everything he suggests. Call to Grand Central that could be routed to cell, home phone, IP phone, all seamlessly. Getting only one number to show up on all outgoing calls would be difficult though.
- duus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i agree. turn that prick in.
- Tabris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I accidentally dugg you up, because I'm American and am quite positive federal funding for a bridge to quite literally Nowhere is a complete waste of money that could have gone to healthcare or something.
- GliTCH82, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1*****, man, wake up. Soviet Russia has been gone for years. And what kind of ***** is that, in Russia Digg is considered spam? That's because all the spammers are in Russia, so they call our sensible comments spam because it's counter-spam, to them our comments of wisdom just kind of get in the way of their little golden ***** nuggets of advertising. *****.
- profOblivion, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I might be reaching a bit here, but headset notwithstanding, I would LOVE to see him try to ride a motorcycle with one hand holding a phone. I guess with some crafty clutch work, you could idle your way up to cruising speed, which would be impressive... or alternately, burn some oil in first gear all the way, which would be entertaining and possibly involve fire. Sweet.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Or a cliff to nowhere...
- tzonic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Did he almost say "iPod phon- iP...iPhh..."??
- eecrown, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0All you techies need to check out a cool little invention called Bluetooth. Wireless technology, duh. And yes, Junior, it's even available in a motorcycle helmet. Some of them toggle between devices (one headset, 2 phones, or music or whatever) Golly gee whiz, what'll they think of next. Where have you people BEEN??
- blackacre, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Maybe he would prefer to only have to pay for one service. Grand Central is just a forwarding service. It is pretty handy, but I don't think it's the same thing he's trying to suggest.
