I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”
Yes it does count as a smear, because it's not a ***** quote you retard. He was talking about AMERICAN MUSLIMS and if they were treated unfairly or racially because they were muslim AMERICANS. He was standing up for the innocent muslims in america that ARE NOT terrorists and ARE americans. Idiot. - egoherodotus, on 05/14/2008, -5/+19Do you want to finish the quote? oh, julianwan did it for you...
dumbass, xenophobic piece of *****. - julianwan, on 05/14/2008, -4/+20The actual quote from the book is from page 261 and is as follows: "Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."
- ad33lshahid, on 05/14/2008, -2/+17can you point out what you think is so stupid about this article
- plaboon, on 05/14/2008, -3/+14Who do you mean by "They" - White people fought and died in the Civil War to free the slaves but we all get put into the racist bucket... I'm sure those who died in that war fighting for the rights of the slaves love the fact their ancestors all get thrown in the same bucket as the people they were fighting...

- SoulDrift404, on 05/14/2008, -3/+12I have no choice but to conclude that you're completely full of ***** until you prove otherwise.
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -1/+9You guys? I was the only one that caught it. That is likely because I am black. How do you know the person posting isn't black? No one knew I was black for months here on Digg.
Are you being racist, just ASSUMING the person posting the phrase was white? See the boogeyman everywhere? - inactive, on 05/14/2008, -1/+9"Yes, referring to a black man who is a Senator and in his late 40s as a "boy" is a typical racist attack."
My uncle says" That's my boy Obama!" pretty regularly. Should I let him know he is being racist, since you have so decreed? - CreatureLady, on 05/14/2008, -8/+18I especially appreciated jik's comments in the final third of the article ... "Here's what you can do to help restore civility to the political debate." Well said.
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -2/+9So, you ARE saying my black uncle is a racist, because he calls Obama "my boy"?
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -2/+8"Yes, referring to a black man who is a Senator and in his late 40s as a "boy" is a typical racist attack"
What the *****?? Is this Mobile, Alabama in 1920? Get over yourself, Mr. Sensitive. If he was trying to be racist, I'm sure we could all think of quite a few other words he could have interchanged with the word boy.
It's pretty telling when a person screams racism where none exists. - swrostmore, on 05/14/2008, -5/+11Fair enough, I guess I failed to comprehend your deep and fundamental understanding of a modern liberalism that embraces free-market economics (wait - isn't that neoliberalism?). Help me out here, and kindly respond to the question I posed- upon what, exactly, do you base your endorsement of Friedman as a emblematic representative of liberal political thought?
- JoeVet, on 05/14/2008, -2/+8I hate to point it out to you kids but America is tired of GOP war and spend form of government. We need fiscal responsibility and that comes from the democrats who pay as they go unlike the GOP who leave the debt to our children.
- allengeer, on 05/14/2008, -1/+8America's population is, quite frankly, one of the most intelligent populations on the face of the globe. There are more scientists and engineers, typically intelligent people, per capita than nearly any other country (except for Japan). And, contrary to your "It cant function properly" statement, the American government has functioned properly for over 200 years and proved itself through a wide variety of diversity much more complicated than whatever you think is wrong with it. Leaders have been mocked and ridiculed all over the world for any country so it is no different with the US, and its currency is, in fact, still worth something. Its cities and landscape are some of the most beautiful in the world and, in fact, not bleak. Perhaps you've never appreciated the majesty of the rockies, or the sereneness of Lake Tahao. Perhaps you've never seen the deep formations of Carlsbad, or viewed the constant predictability of Old Faithful. You've probably never seen the untamed wild forest of Alaska, the massive redwoods of California, or the soothing beaches of Hawaii. Have you seen the beauty of the blooms in Washinton DC in the spring? Have you experienced the gritty character of New Orleans? The excitement of Las Vegas?
You are wrong. America does not have a bleak landscape, and its cities each have their own fantastic character to offer. - inactive, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6"Nothing you quoted is in my opinion inconsistent with the adjective "liberal""
Wow. Which dictionary are you using? - inactive, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6"Clearly, ssn, your uncle is racist against Obama's *white* half ;-P"
So you have seen some of out family arguments then ;-) I tell you what. Having black, irish, and latino relatives makes the it a whole lot of fun, once the drinking starts! It sure is easier to say what is on your mind when no one can pull the race card... - bernlin2000, on 05/14/2008, -2/+9Apparently winnestrow is against protecting Americans (regardless of their religion) against hate crimes. Now isn't THAT nice...
- FyreGoddess, on 05/14/2008, -1/+7Clearly, ssn, your uncle is racist against Obama's *white* half ;-P
- JoeVet, on 05/14/2008, -5/+12Its clear that all you see is a black man. Go back to your trailer park and your sister. No one wants to hear from you.
- archiesteel, on 05/14/2008, -1/+6This is the Scientology approach: charge for your BS, so the people who paid for it won't call you on it (for fear of appearing naive).
Thankfully, StepCousin is here to remind us how idiotic some conservatives can be. - razalas, on 05/14/2008, -2/+8Whats with all the wacky racist and ultra-right wing comments right now?
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -2/+7Pay no attention to chickfaraby's contrived outrage.
- woofers07, on 05/14/2008, -3/+8Barack's middle name is HUSSEIN?? Holy ***** that was Sadam's last name, he's totally a terrorist...
is it redneck or hick? not sure which one to refer to you as. - inactive, on 05/14/2008, -3/+8I'd like to know what is racist about the post as well. I am guessing he doesn't like the "your boy Obama!" phrase.
If you are implying "welfare to third world countries" is inherently racist, you might want to check yourself. - ad33lshahid, on 05/14/2008, -4/+9thank you for looking that up and posting the correct context of that quote.
- photokeith, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5Translation: I didn't actually RTFA
- archiesteel, on 05/14/2008, -1/+6Of course he can't. Baseless accusations are the bread and butter of anti-Obama trolls.
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5why can't liberal talk radio survive? no liberals in the top twenty:
http://www.talkers.com/main/index.php?option=com_c ...
the majority are conservative, they are out working not wasting time on digg like us. - bonmot5, on 04/08/2009, -0/+4Are you suggesting that the citizens of the United States turn our collective backs on our Constitution, forfeit our right to bear arms, and blindly become Global citizens? Only by force!
All of the woes of the alleged "global warming" must be placed at the feet of America? You are naive! How old are you? Twelve? I do agree with you about our Foreign Policy, but frankly, where are these benevolent leaders going to come from, these leaders that will direct and plan for a better world for you and your children? Haven't you heard..."Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." In this wonderful world that you describe, what will become of those that want to opt out? Huh Huh? Take it to the ultimate conclusion. Any of your Utopian ideas. No matter how you look at it, Utopia has no place for murder, and you could not realize your Utopian dream without murdering those that will not cooperate.
Yes, I agree, there is a lot wrong with the United States, but your solution is NOT an option! - JessicaLF77, on 05/14/2008, -3/+7I would honestly like to know what was racist in that post. I didn't see it either.
- swrostmore, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4The latest liberal, progressive idea from Mr. Friedman: Declare Cold war with Iran!
"The next American president will inherit many foreign policy challenges, but surely one of the biggest will be the cold war. Yes, the next president is going to be a cold-war president -- but this cold war is with Iran." - Thomas Friedman May 14, 2008
http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/ - inactive, on 05/14/2008, -1/+7travel to the mid west --- or at least away from the coasts--- pretty obvious
- JoeVet, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6You need to go back to the history books. The northern states, while opposed to slavery, fought to preserve the Union and not to end slavery. The south, according to Confederate Vice President Alexander H. Stephens, fought to keep slavery ( http://members.aol.com/jfepperson/corner.html ). Nobody fought to free the slaves. They were ultimately freed as an act of punishment on the waring states and not as an act of human decency.
- afterlife23, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4shut up
- julianwan, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5you coy little *****.
- dickardwa, on 05/14/2008, -12/+16I felt this was kind of a weak article but it does shed light on what's sure to come: incessant, unfounded and personal attacks against Obama. Remember folks, in 2000 they attacked John McCain for his WAR RECORD. If that ain't crass then crass don't mean what is used to.
http://www.imperfectunion.com - bernlin2000, on 05/14/2008, -1/+4Ah nice sarcasm: are you mocking the fact that the vast majority of diggers are not incompetent? People like Obama because he is likable, because he is what he says he is. The only aura around him is an aura of sincerity, which most politicians simply don't have. But all these logicals arguments will most likely fall flat with you, since you probably prefer to just make snide comments against the popular tide, regardless of whether or not the popular candidate actually "gets it"
- archiesteel, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Actually, Dewhead, he's quoting out of context to give the wrong impression about Obama, which is tantamount to lying.
Do you think lying is an acceptable form of discourse? - SaladCactusKing, on 05/14/2008, -3/+6You live in Seattle.
- dk911, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Finally, someone with some sense on digg! It's election season -- same as open season... The press will be rife with campaign smears. Mark my words... For instance, WTF does someone celebrating their birthday have to do with Katrina?? Should he have been in NO with his arms outstretched screaming "I'LL STOP IT!!"? Well, some diggers seem to think so.
- CeeAyy, on 05/14/2008, -1/+4Inference... guilt by association... fear... racism... fabrication and lies... Tactics that are used against the opposition when your candidate has no positive points to sell.
Go ahead, say it... What exactly are you getting at? What are you suggesting that Sen. Obama did. Why wait? Spell it out now.
Oh, and it's despicable that you are hoping for McCain's death soon. I don't agree with him politically but I don't wish him any harm. What's wrong with you? You probably like the idea of war and death. People like you scare me, really. - inactive, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3ha ha
http://www.talkers.com/main/index.php?option=com_c ... - inactive, on 05/14/2008, -2/+5Where is there a racist slur in his post?
Or, is this one of those "a racist behind every tree" moments?
And, yes. If anybody is struggling it's their own fault. - gknewell, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3I would love to see the day when neocons and their media affliates are completely ignored by the general public. However, until this country makes advanced education more affordable the people who need it the most they will be excluded and will continue to crawl to the exploiters of their ignorance.
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -3/+6Your silly use of capitalization aside, I am a leftist and I have yet to find a reason to support Senator Obama. He hasn't voted for leftist policies. He hasn't supported leftist causes. He's simply not on my side.
Just because a person is not a ***** insane right wing fascist doesn't mean they are a leftist. - inactive, on 05/14/2008, -3/+5"And yet we are still the envy of the world."
According to right wing nuts... - flossdaily, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3that website is pathetic. its just an anti-muslim site
- spiraltri3e, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3A MONSTER. Tee hee.
