- LuaPron, on 11/13/2007, -10/+167Dissent is something all kids should learn. It is far more important for a functioning democratic republic than anything they could learn about math, science, literature, or art. It is the only means by which statism can be effectively opposed.
The big problem we face today in putting a stop to the killing is the LACK of dissent. There are no sustained protests in our streets, just a mostly docile public with a few people that speak out. This is reflected in the cowardice the democratic congress shows every time Bush wants some money to kill more Iraqis with. - inactive, on 11/12/2007, -10/+119It's just sickening how people don't believe in peace. As if there were ever a "bad peace".
- jdb252, on 11/13/2007, -3/+109That's fine, but the entire paradigm is wrong. Peace is not an alternative to war, war is a bad alternative to peace.
The concept of peace should be the "natural" state... War is a state of exception. - Napoleone, on 11/12/2007, -9/+109It's just sickening how neocons never pass up the chance to send other people's children to war.
- spyd3rweb, on 11/13/2007, -6/+85Its never to young to get them learning about peace.
- skippy17, on 11/13/2007, -4/+65I guess protesting isn't on the test for No Child Left Behind.
What's next, no more teaching about Martin Luther King? - LuaPron, on 11/12/2007, -2/+61I'm a conservative leaning libertarian and I consider Bush to be a war criminal. I despise politicians that want war. War should only be fought in self defense.
You don't have to be a liberal to like peace. - Hortnon, on 11/14/2007, -13/+63It's not completely about learning 'alternatives to war'
FTA:"The principal says she's all for free speech, but doesn't think our youngest students are ready yet to hear about war protesting. " - inactive, on 11/13/2007, -4/+52Now remember kids it's "DIE DIE DIE" and "KILL THEM ALL" now one more time from the top. And johnny lets work on thrusting that bayonet a little harder.
- airwalkery2k, on 11/12/2007, -3/+41Exploiting kids means teaching them that war is not the only option out there? And that makes you liberal?
Man, I am glad I don't live your imaginary world. - alekies, on 11/13/2007, -1/+39Brought to you by the Ministry of Love.
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -8/+40"One parent even got on the Rush Limbaugh radio program.
"This is not a hoax?" asked Limbaugh
"No sir, this is true. Kids are making a banner that includes the names of conscientious objectors," answered the caller.
Limbaugh's faithful listeners quickly flooded the school with emails and phone calls.
"It's been difficult since a national entertainer spread it around the world," said principal Betsy Asheim-Dean."
Quick conservatives! Bully and intimidate! - ZenMojo, on 11/12/2007, -3/+34How dare they teach my child about peace!
- luweez90, on 11/13/2007, -1/+30I wasn't aware there was an age limit on peace now.
How can you ever be too young to know that war is rarely the answer? The mind boggles. - hinchb, on 11/12/2007, -3/+32I know the common argument against free speech and protest in school is that it obstructs the learning process, but I fail to see how that is the case in this story. Especially since a teacher did this, and it was just a banner. Lame.
- SuperMoses, on 11/13/2007, -3/+31Kids are too young to learn about peace, but I guess they are never too young to be brainwashed with blind patriotism
- ithejosh, on 11/13/2007, -2/+26When was peace an alternative to war? You make it sound like war is normal.
- Mikesendker, on 11/12/2007, -1/+25Yeah, honestly, it's 1984ish to suggest we can't teach our young to want peace.
- alexforcefive, on 11/12/2007, -3/+24How young were they? Because I learned at a very young age from a project on WW2 how retarded war is. It's not a secret!
- Scruffydan, on 11/12/2007, -0/+21if you are teaching them how to protest peacful then what the issue? Peaceful protest should always be encouraged
- Typhoon2009, on 11/13/2007, -5/+24"No soldier worth his salt would ever hope for war. And still, there are things worth fighting for." -Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf
Translates to us civilians as well. We shouldn't ever want war, but sometimes (e.g. WWII) it's the only thing we can do. - spudhead, on 11/12/2007, -2/+20It's amazing to me how quickly and willingly some adopt the talking points from their party. I guess it avoids the necessity to use one's own thought process.
- Napoleone, on 11/12/2007, -4/+22Peace is too dangerous for the MIC.
- NikoKun, on 11/12/2007, -2/+19LOL Liberals got nothing to do with this *****!
- mocharabbit, on 11/13/2007, -3/+19Is she Klingon?
- Lynxplus, on 11/12/2007, -2/+18sheep. baaaaaaaah.
- moskaudancer, on 11/13/2007, -0/+14Thank you, Thermodynamic Man!
- scotticus, on 11/12/2007, -5/+19I'm going to have to call retard based on what you type.
- pat25fire, on 11/12/2007, -0/+14"There was never a good war or a bad peace." Benjamin Franklin
- perogi21, on 11/12/2007, -8/+21"masterm1nd", the more I read your rantings, I can only hope that you were home schooled. There is no way the American educational system can be THAT bad...
- spyd3rweb, on 11/13/2007, -0/+12What the Korean War or the person on a couch?
- brianbennett, on 11/12/2007, -0/+11War is woefully normal. Human history is little else.
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -3/+14Peace is liberal, apparently
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -15/+26This is Veterans Day, honoring those that serve in war. This isn't protest day or conscientious objector day. The people being honored are Veterans, they are not the architects of war, merely those that fight it. You want to make political statements, fine. Pick another day. But don't try to hijack a day that honors those that muck around in the horrors and hell of war.
- Theli, on 11/12/2007, -1/+12"Tell me one time in human history where there was peace."
Right now there is peace where I live. If I look out the window I see no bombs dropping, I see no tanks or armed troops moving through the streets. And this is the case in the great majority of the world. Even during WW2, this was true about most of the world.
"If there is war, then there cannot be peace. If there is peace, then there cannot be war. War cancels out peace, peace cannot cancel out war."
If there is summer, there cannot be winter. Summer cancels out winter, winter cannot cancel out summer. As there is always summer somewhere, it follows that there is always summer everywhere. Thus it is summer here, and I should put on a pair of shorts. And look out for paratroopers of course... - ZenPirate, on 11/12/2007, -6/+16 I'm a veteran and I'm all for the kids learning about peace. If people kept getting along as well as we did when we were small children the world would be a more peaceful place.
- RoboB0b, on 11/12/2007, -2/+12You just have a different outlook on it. You could pretty much swap peace and war/violence in your post and make the same points. You say peace is not real because somewhere in the world there is violence. Well then I say that war is not real because somewhere in the world there is an act of kindness. Can you see how that sounds a bit silly? Peace and war can exist at the same time in the world. You can't give up on trying peaceful solutions just because there isn't absolute peace everywhere.
- KibibyteBrain, on 11/12/2007, -1/+11So are you saying your gunfight your way to work Rambo style? We have peace in much of America, and have for a while: its been the key to success. We basically outsource our woes to a few Americans to deal with.
- mikelieman, on 11/12/2007, -3/+13Not killing any more soldiers and Iraqis is an agenda, and promoting blind obedience to authority isn't?
- tehbored, on 11/12/2007, -0/+8Your name switching game really isn't very funny.
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -1/+10Hooray for public education!
- pintomp3, on 11/12/2007, -4/+13funny how we are taught that the founding fathers were heros for dissenting and committed what these days would be considered terrorism, but now we must be loyal citizens who must not question authority. america was founded on dissent and change. we have stagnated and let the elites convince us that maintaining the status quo is good for us. the american dream is just a dream now.
- Soofi, on 11/12/2007, -4/+13In America you can try to shield your children from even the thought of war, but in places like Iraq - their children do not have this security and are subject to the horrors of the real thing.
Ignorance is bliss. For the time being. - Mikesendker, on 11/12/2007, -1/+9Minilove. Use Newspeak.
- katherynne, on 11/12/2007, -0/+8Right, and small children SHOULD, in fact, be taught to stand up for what they believe in.
- thesmrt12004, on 11/12/2007, -0/+8@ masterm1nd...A double entendre is a figure of speech similar to the pun, in which a spoken phrase can be understood in either of two ways. I don't see an entendre anywhere ....unless I'm am dense
- jaymzdean, on 11/12/2007, -0/+8Wait. China is our enemy? Then why do you buy so much of their *****? Why do you support their buying up the debt created by our fiat currency?
You don't know what the hell you stand for. - bradcrc, on 11/13/2007, -6/+14I'd actually agree with those who say that veterans day is not a time for promoting the names of those people who are objectors. Especially since many of those people were the ones who threw blood/paint on returning viet nam vets and screamed that they were baby-killers. (let us not forget this horrible piece of our history)
As someone who is and has been very against the current "war" in Iraq since we invaded, I think a day to celebrate people who stand up against war, and for us all to remember what free speech was (does it still exist?) would be a great thing. I just think we owe the vets a lot of gratitude, and this day should belong exclusively to them. - KingGorilla, on 11/12/2007, -5/+12Chaos is the natural state of things
- KingGorilla, on 11/12/2007, -1/+8that would be expensive
