- Rotzooi, on 12/31/2007, -3/+50In short: worried about the horrendous content of the tapes, the CIA decided that a little trouble over their destruction was to be preferred over people actually viewing them. Lovely.
- inactive, on 12/31/2007, -5/+50Torture is evil. Always. If they were actually worried about their image, they wouldn't be evil.
- inactive, on 12/31/2007, -4/+42So let me get this straight. The United States does not torture, except when it does. The United States does not destroy evidence of the United States "not torturing",.. except when it does. Yet, what this story essentially says is--- we do, in-fact, torture. (that's a War crime) It was in-fact authorized by the President and his administration. That's an admission of President Bush's involvement in committing a war crime and violating international laws in carrying out that crime. Is there anything that I'm missing here, why has our media and the Congress not gone ballistic over these admissions. Granted, Ted Kennedy has been very vocal against the administration on the issue, but without the rest of the Democrats AND Republicans behind that voice, there is nothing. Get this show on the road, the President isn't going to impeach himself.
- Blakovitch, on 12/31/2007, -3/+41The tapes were originally created because the CIA feared that Americans would make unfair judgments about how the terrorists were treated, thus damaging their image. The tapes were eventually destroyed because the CIA concluded if they were ever released, that would also damage their image.
- ronpaul20008, on 12/31/2007, -7/+36The abu ghraib tapes show our military not only torturing, sodomizing, & raping men, but also women & young children. Usually, in front of each other..(molesting a child in front of his/her father, raping a woman in front of her husband, etc.)
- socialpyramid, on 12/31/2007, -5/+34I've read the Times' headline several times and still can't figure out what they're trying to say.
- Napoleone, on 12/31/2007, -1/+16Starting conspiracies or participating in them?
- inactive, on 12/31/2007, -0/+13Wow this is just sick
- notque, on 12/31/2007, -1/+14And these questions have already been answered in regards to their methods of interrogation like water boarding. If they want that classified as not torture any more then they need to bring a public debate to the people on having it changed before they use it.
It's a clear cut war crime right now. - ubitendo, on 12/31/2007, -1/+13Why do you read it if you hate it?
- Rotzooi, on 12/31/2007, -0/+11The tapes were destroyed, so there is nothing to 'open'.
We will never fully know the extent of the horrors that have been perpetrated in our name. - crimsonryno, on 12/31/2007, -9/+20The CIA --starting conspiracies since 1947
- jake8689, on 12/31/2007, -2/+13think about if you were being tortured you would tell them what they want to know, not whats true. torture only works on TV not in real life
- Groovemaster, on 12/31/2007, -1/+12Yeah when it's so obvious that Iraq is one of the Great American Success Stories... :| *blink blink*
- infinityanant, on 12/31/2007, -1/+11well CIA should open the tapes so that public can know what has happened behind their back.
- ronpaul20008, on 12/31/2007, -0/+10what don't you get? you're a vet and you're pro war? the war is immoral, illegal, and we have no right to be there killing their citizens. They've been living with our death & destruction daily for FIFTEEN YEARS. I have yet to see a soldier , regardless what McCain says (he's lying) that says he wants to be there. For what? What's the mission? How do we win? Here's a list of it looks like 100's of names of veterans who are for Ron Paul, and against the war http://www.ronpaul2008.com/veterans/ Don't you think how we are "perceived" is in direct relation to how many terrorists there are ? If you want to defend the war, and tell me why I'm wrong, I'm listening, maybe I'm missing something...
- kooft, on 12/31/2007, -1/+10Starting and participating in them? Or masterminding and executing them?
- bowens44, on 12/31/2007, -0/+9We have no control over what others do but damn sure have a patriotic to make sure that our people aren't doing it. I am so sick and tired of you neo-cons using the 'what about him?' excuse for every atrocity and crime that was instigated by your idiot president and his anti-American , irresponsible actions over the last 7 years.
- notque, on 12/31/2007, -0/+9We aren't responsibly for Al-Qaedas torture. We are responsible for our own. Watching their beheadings has no moral value whatsoever.
- tsch, on 12/31/2007, -0/+8I want to know who the doctors were that agreed to be in the room when someone was being tortured. The AMA should revoke their licenses.
- notque, on 12/31/2007, -0/+8If we want to talk war crimes, the invasion of Iraq was the supreme war crime of aggression which contains responsibility for all the crimes that occur because of the event.
And we are all responsible for allowing it to continue. - nutzngum, on 12/31/2007, -1/+9oh thank god - i read the headline and thought i had lost my mind...it seemed rather fractured.
- evilpoptart, on 12/31/2007, -2/+9i have a bias against obstruction of justice.
- pmcizhere, on 12/31/2007, -4/+11Revolution? What revolution? I just see people in general getting lazier...
- Jowsley, on 12/31/2007, -0/+7The "but the terrorists did...." is becoming the new "but Clinton did..." argument.
Wrong is wrong, and an eye for an eye will make the world blind. - ronpaul20008, on 12/31/2007, -2/+9http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/node/14864
- JoeVet, on 12/31/2007, -0/+6Torture harms American soldiers, idiot. We used to be protected by the Geneva conventions but now that we are a nation that endorses torture every captured American soldier has no protection. We are at much higher risk because you are so yellow-bellied scared that you can't stand and act like a man. You need to climb out of your basement and into the light. Quit acting like a terrorist yourself.
- RealHyperX, on 12/31/2007, -0/+6Good luck impeaching the president. No one cares if property taxes doubled from last year, but somehow they will get involved in impeaching the president? People in this country stopped caring a long time ago! I guess Americans like to get *****.
- bjornski, on 12/31/2007, -3/+9Dammit, how many names do I have to block this moron under?
- cotaskmemalloc, on 12/31/2007, -2/+8Absolutely retarded headline.
- vertinox, on 12/31/2007, -1/+7Nazi officers got hanged for war crimes even though Hitler declared the French resistance and Soviet partisans fighters did not have the Geneva Conventions didn't apply to them because they weren't wearing uniforms so they could just execute them unlike regular POWs. A crime is still a crime.
- ronpaul20008, on 12/31/2007, -1/+7http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/node/14864
there's the link.. click for yourself...i wonder why i'm getting dugg up so much, maybe because the truth hurts but it needs to be told in order to figure out ways to stop what's going on? laughable? rape torture and murder of innocent people is not that funny. not funny at all , actually. - dinsy, on 12/31/2007, -4/+10Ya got Islamic suicide murdering bombers over at your house Spaz? Or just on tv.
- cococooky, on 12/31/2007, -1/+7Executing them? Or tricking other countries and groups into doing or finishing the job for them...
- NuFadZoo, on 12/31/2007, -2/+8They taped over the torture with wedding footage.
- scottknick, on 12/31/2007, -1/+6Those who believe that torture, brutality, and war crimes are justified when the stakes are high enough are in full agreement with Osama Bin Laden. If we define a class of humans to whom anything might be justifiably done, then the only moral difference between ourselves and Al Qaeda is the color of our jerseys.
- kooft, on 12/31/2007, -2/+7I agree pmcizhere and the epitome of laziness is not flicking your pinkie over and toggling the caps-lock.
- bowens44, on 12/31/2007, -0/+5Just another neo-con bushbot who isn't bright enough to understand that how we are "perceived" in the world has a direct effect on our national security and the safety of US soldiers abroad.
No wonder you guys can't win elections. - ChuckIT, on 12/31/2007, -2/+7caps lock is cruse control for awesome.
- robberry, on 12/31/2007, -0/+5Oh, look, there's another person who thinks that two wrongs make a right....
- shupy, on 12/31/2007, -0/+4UberGeek, you do know that these were suspects. Not yet found guilty. If our government decides suspects can be tortured, how safe is anyone? The legacy of the Iraq debacle is that people can be jailed indefinately without charges, and people can be tortured as "suspects". This stuff is right out of the dark ages.
- DestroyFascism, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4Destroying evidence is admitting guilt....CIA = Worlds biggest terrorist organization....
- shupy, on 12/31/2007, -0/+4The problem here is that these are not terrorists that were tried and convicted of anything. These are suspects that are being interrogated.
This torture is not punishment for a crime, it is seeking evidence of a crime.
The victims of this interrogation may not be guilty of anything other than being in the wrong place, or being related to the wrong person, or being the wrong nationality.
That should weigh heavily on everyone's conscience.
If these people were not terrorists before, you can be sure they and everyone that knows them will have a burning hatred for the US after. - notque, on 12/31/2007, -0/+4Is giving people money called "tricking" these days?
- vertinox, on 12/31/2007, -1/+4Is it OK to gas Jewish people because Hitler did it?
- SLuM, on 12/31/2007, -1/+4The US and Israel make the USSR and China look like chumps when it comes to torture and murders. Don't believe me? Chomsky.info
- shupy, on 01/01/2008, -0/+3A good response to Ubergeek that deserves repeating:
The man is a Canadian citizen traveling with a Canadian passport back to his home in Canada via the US. The 'battlefield' he was captured on was JFK airport in NYC. Why do you think the US decided to send him to Syria instead of his home country, Canada? It couldn't possible be because the Syrians are willing to torture their prisoners and share the results of their 'interrogations' with the CIA, could it? - shupy, on 01/01/2008, -0/+3How many "battlefields" has UberGeek ever been on.
Please provide documentation that those who were waterboarded were suicide bombers or wearing vests loaded with bombs.
Ah, so it is being Islamic that is the crime. Regardless how uncivilized any ethnic group has been historically, it does not give us permission to be as barbaric.
I thought we were better than that. - ronpaul20008, on 12/31/2007, -1/+4I have a sick mind? hey, i'm just the messenger, because the mainstream media refuses to do their duty by not serving the public (don't even get me started on 9/11.....)
