- funhouse1970, on 06/23/2009, -37/+132abortion = planned parenthood = Margaret Sanger = Racist / Eugenicist
Nixon's views were, I'm afraid, mainstream for his time. Margaret Sanger pushed abortion for the poor, especially blacks.
"The most merciful thing that a family does to one of its infant members is to kill it."
Margaret Sanger (editor). The Woman Rebel, Volume I, Number 1. Reprinted in Woman and the New Race. New York: Brentanos Publishers, 1922.
"Birth control must lead ultimately to a cleaner race."
Margaret Sanger. Woman, Morality, and Birth Control. New York: New York Publishing Company, 1922. Page 12.
"We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferably with social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. The most successful educational approach to the Negro is through a religious appeal. We don't want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population. and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members."
Margaret Sanger's December 19, 1939 letter to Dr. Clarence Gamble, 255 Adams Street, Milton, Massachusetts. Original source: Sophia Smith Collection, Smith College, North Hampton, Massachusetts. Also described in Linda Gordon's Woman's Body, Woman's Right: A Social History of Birth Control in America. New York: Grossman Publishers, 1976.
"Eugenic sterilization is an urgent need ... We must prevent multiplication of this bad stock."
Margaret Sanger, April 1933 Birth Control Review.
"Eugenics is … the most adequate and thorough avenue to the solution of racial, political and social problems.
Margaret Sanger. "The Eugenic Value of Birth Control Propaganda." Birth Control Review, October 1921, page 5.
"Birth control itself, often denounced as a violation of natural law, is nothing more or less than the facilitation of the process of weeding out the unfit, of preventing the birth of defectives or of those who will become defectives."

- GorfTron, on 06/24/2009, -1/+82It was too late when her watergate broke.
- shycyberguy, on 06/23/2009, -9/+76 The man seems to have had a loathing for the entire human race. Civilization was lucky to have survived his reign. Hunter S. Thompson always gets the last word where Nixon is concerned. http://www.theatlantic.com/unbound/graffiti/crook. ...
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -6/+68Were the any more conversations about Jews?
Nixon: Newsweek is totally -- it's all run by Jews and dominated by them in their editorial pages. The New York Times, The Washington Post, totally Jewish, too.
Rev. Billy Graham: This stranglehold has got to be broken or the country's going down the drain.
Nixon: You believe that?
Graham: Yes, sir.
Nixon: Oh, boy. So do I. I can't ever say that, but I believe it.

- asnider, on 06/24/2009, -2/+53Your comment seems to imply that Sanger and Nixon were contemporaries, but Nixon wasn't president during the '20s and '30s, so I'm not entirely sure where you're getting the idea that Sanger's comments show that Nixon's beliefs were mainstream during his presidency (1969-1974).
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -8/+58Nixon was a complicated man. He was definitely a bigot, but true hardcore racism that's questionable, for example Nixon constantly railed against the Jews yet Kissinger was his most trusted man. He was sort of the Archie Bunker type of bigot.
- shupy, on 06/24/2009, -5/+53No surprise. And Reagan liberalized abortion in California.
Then he got to the White House and decided that the "pro-life" forces could be easily manipulated as a source for votes for Republicans. - ZenMojo, on 06/24/2009, -4/+49I still remember audio of him asking Kissinger if he could use the nuclear bomb in Vietnam. He pretty much called Kissinger a pussy for not supporting him.
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -1/+44Lincoln was incredibly racist by todays standards...
- cygnus2112, on 06/24/2009, -3/+44In all fairness, most of the old fart white politicians were racists and bigots. Look at Senator Byrd's legacy.

- sv650touring, on 06/24/2009, -1/+34That was terrible. Dugg.
- MikeOxbigg, on 06/24/2009, -8/+35Cheney's admiration for Nixon is pretty well known. Just saying.
- cygnus2112, on 06/24/2009, -1/+27You should do some reading, schaivosaurus. Lincoln didn't know better, actually. He was very much a racist, one that wanted to deport slaves back to Africa.
But, most of it's forgiven in history due to the times they lived in.
"I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races-that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the 2 races living together on terms of social or political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race." - Abraham Lincoln - Bartboy919, on 06/24/2009, -4/+29Isn't it funny how the "Pro-lifers" are constantly used by Republicans? Conservatives were in a majoriety for 8 years more or less in all three branches of government, yet somehow abortion isnt outlawed. I guess you cant run on a platform that doesn't exists, huh?
This is why abortion will never be outlawed, the conservatives don't have the balls to do it, because they could lose potential votes in future elections. - Lunarparcel, on 06/24/2009, -3/+27This just in.....Nixon still an *****.
- Hetman, on 06/24/2009, -0/+23Edit. He was all about secrecy and privacy.
- donotclickjim, on 06/24/2009, -1/+23You're absolutely right the republicans use the pro-lifers for their own agenda. What really struck me when learning more about Roe v. Wade is that the ruling wasn't about "is a fetus a person" as much as it was about privacy. No supreme court can or will touch overturning Roe v. Wade because it risks threatening other constitutional rights that no American is willing to give up even the most avid pro-lifers.This is their dirty little secret that you won't hear from their leaders.
- acklefutz, on 06/24/2009, -2/+23But the mother should?
- k3rfuffl3, on 06/24/2009, -2/+23Pretty sure O'Reilly would be supporting him actually.
- JonnyOThan, on 06/24/2009, -1/+22Wow. I totally read that as "when you have black and white," as in, if the case is black and white as opposed to a gray area. Two little letters can make a big difference.
- enantiodromia, on 06/24/2009, -0/+20who here can tell me if Nixon used speech writers?
bueller? bueller? - Hetman, on 06/24/2009, -2/+20Have you ever heard of Watergate? Nixon was not all about privacy and secrecy.
- Hetman, on 06/24/2009, -2/+20You do know that Obama is half black and half white. Nixon was saying that interracial children should be aborted. Yes they have a lot in common. One is an interracial child and the other wants to abort interracial children.
- DavidCEisen, on 06/24/2009, -0/+16It also seems to imply that Sanger invented abortion or that abortion didn't exist before Planned Parenthood.
- Conseal, on 06/24/2009, -2/+18“There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that. When you have a black and a white”
That's sort of ironic, isn't it? Look who's in the White House now.. - manlyandy, on 06/24/2009, -5/+20And it is our American right to recognize him as a racist *****. What's your point?
- bonoboho, on 06/24/2009, -0/+14you have to roll a natural 20 to steal a soul, plus the baby gets a saving throw vs charisma.
its the saving throw that would have lost it for him, ever time. - EllimistX, on 06/24/2009, -1/+14Lincoln was racist too, you know.
- richlizard24, on 06/24/2009, -3/+16Lincoln was a big racist and only "freed" the slaves in order to destroy the economy of the South.
- jdames1980, on 06/24/2009, -0/+13Nixon wasn't close to the worst. He actually did SOME good, like creating the EPA.
- TheUngod, on 06/24/2009, -5/+17Of course he's pro choice. He wants to eat the fetus and attempt to regain a soul.
- sv650touring, on 06/24/2009, -1/+13Wait, wait, wait. Are you telling me that politicians have ulterior motives and *aren't* really looking out for my best interests, but rather their own?
- PBRbeer, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1290% of the white population felt the same way in his time, that's right probably your parents, and even more likely your grandparents shared the same exact views, should we vilify them as well.... it was common practice, he was raised in the early centurty, you can't blame the guy for being a product of his environment.
- KahRahTay, on 06/24/2009, -2/+13stay classy Nixon
- enantiodromia, on 06/24/2009, -1/+12of course. shes just a woman, right?
- cygnus2112, on 06/24/2009, -4/+15... in the white house right now.
Sit there for a few seconds, then slap your head. - FredFredrickson, on 06/24/2009, -1/+12Abortions can't be outlawed because it will just lead to thousands more deaths from people getting them illegally.
- TheGreat0ne, on 06/24/2009, -0/+11Sorry I thought we were past basing our policies on myths that sprang up during the bronze age to explain why night and day occur.
- k3rfuffl3, on 06/24/2009, -4/+14Probably because it's not a secret. Republicans are simply delusional. You tell them the truth and none of it will get through. They believe what they want to believe.
- awtripp, on 06/24/2009, -1/+11Slightly disconnected comment.
- HEAVYisSPY, on 06/24/2009, -0/+10what the hell?
- falconear, on 06/24/2009, -1/+11"He was queer in the deepest way. His body should have been burned in a trash can."
Hunter Thompson...my hero. :) - GorfTron, on 06/24/2009, -1/+10This kind of opinion was common in his generation. Some of my older relatives and their friends say stupid things like "even birds flock with their own kind". One is even a judge. His generation was all for the separation of the races. No shock here for me.
- asnider, on 06/24/2009, -0/+9cygnus - Are you suggesting that "All in the Family" was a racist show, rather than a hilarious commentary about people like Archie Bunker?
- DavidCEisen, on 06/24/2009, -2/+11Sanger lived in 1922 and was a product of the time she lived in. She had a racist world view, but she also did a lot of good for women. Eugenics was a widely held belief of many people in the United States of the time and didn't fall out of favor until the 1950's. It's no secret that the United States has a long history of being a racist society
But would you demonize George Washington for having a much worse view of blacks? No, because he was a product of his time.
Nixon made his comment in 1972, which was hardly a perfect time in race relations, but the mainstream view of the time of blacks far exceeding that of 1922. Your false equivocation is silly at best. -
