Oh Texas, how regressive thou are....
- tamothy, on 07/12/2009, -9/+292Was this creationist really appointed, or did this suddenly appear out of nowhere?
- kingofinternet, on 07/11/2009, -28/+302wow, talk about spitting on the graves of our founding fathers.
church and state don't mix. - DouglasQ, on 07/12/2009, -12/+195Reminds me of this one time I hired a pedophile to babysit for me.
-and I expect this will end just as well. - womweasel, on 07/11/2009, -22/+203Article states: Her term will end on Feb. 1, 2002.
Also, I don't like the fact that some of the pronouns are ambiguous in terms of whether they refer to Lowe or Dunbar.
Article was obviously written by a grade schooler or an adult that was educated in a creationism-friendly school district. - inactive, on 07/12/2009, -7/+172As a Texan, I can say I am a bit embarassed right now....
- duggtodeath, on 07/11/2009, -18/+182He should only be paid 6,000 a year.
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -8/+163there is no scientific theory of creationism, from any religion, and no creation HYPOTHESIS belongs in science class because there is no science involved in them.
- NorrisOBE, on 07/12/2009, -7/+159Is Evangelical Christianity the only denomination that truly accepts creationism instead of evolution? I met Catholics, Espicopalians, Anglicans, Methodists and even Mormons that accepts Evolution. All except Evangelicals. WTF?
For ***** sake. Even Islam for that matter accepts evolution. I have a cousin studying biology in the Islamic International University in Malaysia. And the subject of evolution is supported in the university, despite being a truly respected Islamic institution.
For ***** sake Evangelicals, get your ***** back together and just accept evolution (& mainstream science) already! - inactive, on 07/12/2009, -13/+146in Texas, only Jesus can hear you scream.
- masamunecyrus, on 07/12/2009, -1/+115There's nothing wrong with creationism taught in schools. In my middle school, we learnt about Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Taoism, Hinduism, and Shintoism. However, like my old school, it belongs in Social Studies class, not in science class.
- MiddleAmerica, on 07/11/2009, -31/+136
I'm a news junky & recently I thought I'd dig up all of the articles I've seen in the last few years about the seemingly regressive movement in Texas. It took a couple of hours & I ended-up with 50 different stories of Texas regression, again just from the last few years.
So naturally I emailed them to my friend from Texas that thinks its so great (she doesn't follow the news).
- pintomp3, on 07/12/2009, -11/+97Science is not strong among Texan politicians:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JyvkjSKMLw - pintomp3, on 07/12/2009, -10/+94@ Northmass Do you also believe in a combination of round earth and flat earth? How about a combination of gravity and intelligent falling?
Newsflash: The bible is not a science book nor a history book. It is allegory and fable. - billizm, on 07/12/2009, -1/+83It was divine intervention. You'll learn about it in school soon.
- yocouchdigga, on 07/11/2009, -30/+109Stay classy, TX.
- sizzzzlerz, on 07/12/2009, -12/+89Only just now?
- smacksaw, on 07/12/2009, -6/+82How can you tolerate someone whose entire viewpoint is based upon intolerance of the facts?
If your children lie to you, should you tolerate that? If you correct your kids, does that make you an intolerant parent?
You seem to fail to grasp the dichotomy between tolerance and responsibility towards what is actually right.
NEWS FLASH: I am intolerance personified because I am not down with people who hate gays. - inactive, on 07/12/2009, -6/+78Amazingly, the GOP continues to "out-stupid" itself!
- Whackly, on 07/12/2009, -5/+74Actually they did not found it as a Christian nation and went out of their way to let people know that it wasn't a Christian nation. It's just that people who want the "Christian nation" to be true have, for the most part, forgetten how to read or, at the very least, failed history class.
The Treaty of Tripoli is a poplular example of a document that explicitly states that the United States of America is not a Christian nation. It was drafted and signed by many of the same founding fathers that the cannibalistic zombie blood cult followers think were all about the Jesi (plural of Jesus).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Tripoli - pintomp3, on 07/12/2009, -8/+64The people who scream about states rights usually have some religious or bigoted agenda that they can't get done on the federal level. It was used by the pro=slavery crowd, the anti civil rights crowd, the anti interracial marriage crowd, and now the anti-abortion crowd, anti gay marriage crowd, and anti-science crowd.
- smacksaw, on 07/12/2009, -14/+68Texas deserves so much better than this.
- Gemfinder, on 07/11/2009, -17/+68Still for states' rights?
My first thought was "boycott Texas, don't go to the IALHA Nationals" but really, taking my horse to the Nationals won't do anything about this either way. The only classes he'll be enrolled in will be English and Western Pleasure, not biology and zoology. And a big chunk of the money's going to the breed association. The facility's only getting pennies on the dollar.
So Governor Perry is a knuckle-dragging douche-nozzle that hired an addle-pated dickweed. We all know Creationism has no place in the science lab, so just keep countering their ***** with the truth. Kansas shucked off its theocracy, so will Texas. - smacksaw, on 07/12/2009, -5/+54Presbyterian
You're out of your mind if you think that Jar Jar Binks was the best character in Star Wars.
(See, I can not read a comment, either and then come up with a totally irrelevant reply. I see why you do this. It's quite fun!) - Lomstradamus, on 07/12/2009, -1/+49Be careful or you'll drive off the side of the earth.
- lex0nyc, on 07/12/2009, -6/+54And people wonder why rich Texans send their kids to boarding schools in Connecticut...
- bsmang, on 07/12/2009, -1/+47WOW. I hate seeing someone who has totally wasted their mind suggest to someone else that a mind is terrible thing to waste.
It's just plain wrong. - bigbadgoat, on 07/12/2009, -7/+53Scientific theory (like evolution and gravity) can be considered as fact by lay people. Those who aren't scientists and don't understand what a scientific theory is, and how it differs from what is typically thought of as a theory are the problem. These people need to be educated on how undebatable evolution is. This isn't something that has any ambiguity about it.
This isn't something that can be "believed in" any more than me saying that I believe in Canada being a country on earth or that the sky is blue. Evolution has NOTHING to do with how life was created, whatsoever. It explains how every species on this planet got to be the way it is over the course of history. That is it. There is no controversy. There's just ignorant people who choose to ignore science, and even worse, try to bring non-science into a science class. - inactive, on 07/12/2009, -5/+51I am so ***** embarrassed to live here... I understand that politicians pander to constituents, but the mere fact there are enough constituents who believe this malarky to warrant this is a joke.
- joshf52, on 07/12/2009, -2/+48facepalm
- pintomp3, on 07/12/2009, -7/+52You really need to put down the bible and pick up a science book. Evolution wasn't a one time occurrence. It's a process that continues to happen. Perhaps you are thinking about the big bang or to the process that brought forth ***** sapiens. There are modern day examples of evolution:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peppered_moth_evoluti ... - smacksaw, on 07/12/2009, -5/+49Yeah, and considering how many different Christian groups there were and how much they hated each other, they meant to keep religion THA ***** outta politics as well, lest one group gain control and start messing with the others.
Don't cite half of history. - pintomp3, on 07/12/2009, -8/+52Evolution is a fact, just like gravity. What would you say of someone who denied gravity?
- upnortherik, on 07/12/2009, -2/+45Because us atheists are NEVER attacked in this country... /s
"it's easy for them to fight back and they do things like install creationist educators."
For now. - justok, on 07/12/2009, -0/+42Texas has alot of space
- charlie6969, on 07/12/2009, -3/+44That is what Sunday SCHOOL is for.
- Kaegro, on 07/12/2009, -0/+40i don't think he needs to explain...but I will
If you hire a pedo to watch your kids, whats going to happen? If you hire someone who doesnt believe in science to be in charge of the education system, whats going to happen?
best explanation i could come up with with out vulgarity. - FAT_PIGGY, on 07/12/2009, -10/+50Religion is comedy.
- falafelkiosken, on 07/12/2009, -0/+39while he is riding a dinosaur
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -0/+38I feel this pain at this very moment. I got a bill from a toll company recently for 5 bucks, saying that HWY 121 has turned into an 'invisible toll' that there are no booths, but cameras that snap your car and send you the bill. so really people are getting charged and have no idea what is going on, it's really ***** up I have to pay for insurance, yearly inspections, yearly registration, and now to drive my car. makes me sick. so no, he is succeeding slowly but surely.
- sodoh, on 07/12/2009, -7/+45Putting the stupidity of this aside for a moment. This effectively screws over people who are actually learning real science in Texas. Can you imagine a few years down the line trying to apply for a science based job with a CV listing a Texas University?
- InetRoadkill, on 07/12/2009, -1/+39Perry sucks. One of the issues from the special legislative session he just called was to give Texas's highways to private companies so that they can turn them all into toll roads. Fortunately, the legislature walked away from idea this time. But I'm sure Perry will try again. He's determined to turn Texas into a giant toll road.
- r0g3r, on 07/12/2009, -1/+39There are no other religious "theories" to teach, because no other religion is trying to have their religion taught in science class.
Also, a distinction needs to be made regarding "theory." Creationists have no actual scientific theory. A scientific theory is a very specific thing, and pure conjecture such as the creationists engage in does not meet the criteria. No respected scientific journal has ever published a creationism study, because no valid studies have been done by creationists. They are not in the business of science. They don't follow the scientific method. They are in the business of trying to fool people with some nonsensical scientific jargon in order to sneak religion into science class, where it has absolution no place. - brandnewx, on 07/12/2009, -3/+39Dude, next time you're sick, don't bother getting medicines filled with science. Or better yet, stir clear of all modern technologies made possible by science. That includes your computer you used to post this little ignorant comment.
Or are you sir a hypocrite? - pintomp3, on 07/12/2009, -5/+40Same evolution.
- Elsewhere42, on 07/12/2009, -4/+39I'm so embarrassed to be from Texas. :S
- Dipsomaniac, on 07/12/2009, -1/+36Do you really need a definition, or are you trying to make the implication that there is something scientific about intelligent design?
- r0g3r, on 07/12/2009, -1/+35You can be a christian and still accept scientific reality. It's a conflict in places, but some people manage it. You simply have to take some parts of the bible as allegory if you want to make it align with modern scientific knowledge.
It's okay to be a christian in that position, but to be a good educator at that level you certainly need to be aware of proven scientific facts like evolution.... and have the ability to distinguish between science and religion when it comes to science curriculum. - Dubbleyew, on 07/12/2009, -5/+37Earth isn't a circle. It is spheroidal. It bulges at the equator because of it's rotation. So Harvester, you're bible is still completely wrong.
As for you NorthMass, I am deeply concerned about someone like you, who knows, evidently, NOTHING, like, NOTHING about evolution, yet still argues with such conviction.
There was nobody there to video tape the process? Thats just so stupid and infantile. You weren't there to see it happen so it didn't happen? Do you have any conception of the things we know that we don't need to have witnessed first hand?
OK, here is your homework. Firstly, throw out that bible. Throw it in the trash where it belongs. Go out and buy an astronomy textbook. Are you aware that we actually know things about planets that we will never be able to go to? We know what chemicals make up the planets in our solar system, we even know how the sun works. "But....but nobody has been there to videotape the sun converting protons to helium through thermonuclear fusion...." *sigh* I still can't get that comment out of my head, thats just so embarrassing for you to say.
If you truly open your mind, and do some reading, you will discover incredible things. You will have a newfound appreciation for the human race and for some of the minds that have contributed to our body of knowledge. You will truly, truly be amazed at what we know.
The same goes for evolution. You seem to be adament that evolution is probably 99.99999% true but can't be 100% true because "nobody was there" when it happened. This is a standard creationist argument. It is *****. It disregards all the science, it disregards the entire theory of evolution. You aren't even basing your thoughts off of anything rational. You just figure that since nobody "saw" it happen (I assume you mean apes evolving into "man") that we can't be 100% sure.
But just like astronomy, you can't fathom (clearly you are not educated past high school....maybe not even that...) what scientists have already discovered.
Unlike people like you, who think that their mere opinions are enough to debate more educated people (the most frustrating thing about you people, your arrogance) there are scientists who SPEND THEIR LIVES studying these things, painstakingly working, experimenting, publishing, discussing. And you would marginalize their priceless work, because you haven't seen any videotape of an ape turning into a man.
- sokalo, on 07/12/2009, -12/+44So sad, one more reason to stay away from visiting the Formerly great US of A.. your new motto should be : "USA, falling to pieces since 2001; don't come". This is the same country that scientist flocked to in the early 20th century right?, right?...
