I'm sure we're also doing the same thing we did during the Vietnam war. It was called "backdoor courts" where you went to trial and were offered an option - Join the military and all charges would be dropped, or go to jail. A lot of people arrested on drug charges ended up enlisting rather than going to prison.
- Indyanna, on 05/12/2008, -7/+6Breaking news: the Vietnam War ended more than 30 years ago. The differences between what is happening in Iraq and what happened in Vietnam couldn't be more drastic. In other words, it's not 1969 anymore, the Beatles are either dead or retired, and nobody says "groovy" any more. Welcome to 2008.
- MisterWonderful, on 05/12/2008, -3/+4Yep, you're bound to make any goals when you keep shifting the goalposts. Just like 'Nam! Good analogy Indy!

- these3remain, on 05/12/2008, -3/+4The draft was in effect during the Vietnam War - another major difference between then and now.

- IrishJoe, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3In economically difficult times jobs are more scarce and the US Government is always hiring making the military more attractive to young people facing fewer jobs do to layoffs, hiring freezes and out-sourcing jobs overseas. I don't blame these young people a bit. God bless these young men and women who need jobs badly and are willing to serve in one of the most dangerous jobs on Earth.
