- GodAImighty, on 05/21/2009, -13/+399wow did he give abortions while snacking on stem cells too?
- Stu8912, on 05/22/2009, -14/+242I'm from San Angelo. Mayor Lown was not "Super Conservative" that's ridiculous. He never concentrated on national issues and in a town of 100k it does not get ideological. Its about whats best for the city, traffic lights, zoning, road construction. The issues are so local there's no chance to be partisan. Even if there was, he is not, he won his fourth term in office with 90% of the vote was the youngest mayor elected to office at his age for this size city and used to serve in the peace corps. Its a conservative area but he was a middle road genuinely nice guy who served for six years for 600 a year and this is coming from a proud liberal-progressive. There definitely are hypocritical social conservatives, this is not the case here. Its just a popular mayor in a conservative city who happened to be gay and leaving a job in an attempt to be happy. This article is just plain wrong.
- RileyCourage, on 05/21/2009, -4/+221This isn't an Onion story?
- Anomaly100, on 05/21/2009, -14/+154Those Conservative closets are packed full aren't they, yet they'll deny every conceivable right to our countrymen in the gay community.
Well, if they keep denying their rights, I'll love seeing them run out of the closet! Hypocrites. - firesphotons, on 05/22/2009, -10/+129Also sponsored by organized religion, teaching people to hate in Jesus's name from tax free monoliths coast to coast.
(this is going to get dug down further than an off shore oil site) - anstice85, on 05/21/2009, -11/+113Being from a border state myself.. I can imagine that the gay affair part is devastating enough. But the addition of him being an ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT will probably send the racists I mean conservatives into a frenzy.
I'm very interested to see the reaction to this one! - ForumDriv, on 05/21/2009, -7/+100But Mr. Mayor, unless your partner has a close family member who can petition for him (and as of now, only the boy-girl type family need apply) or he has a job lined up for which no U.S. citizen or legal resident has been found after a proper search, and your friend is willing to wait a minimum of 7 years for Mexico (depending on who is applying for them and how they are related, so more likely 10-20 years) he can't come legally to this country. Maybe we will learn something about how broken our legal immigration system is and why we need reform out of all of this?
- buckrogers1965, on 05/22/2009, -10/+90Scratch a conservative homophobe, find a flaming gay man.
Why else would someone care about homosexuals unless they were gay themselves?
But don't take my word for it, here is a study that was done:
In 1996, a controlled study of 64 heterosexual men (half claimed to be homophobic by experience and self-reported orientation) at the University of Georgia found that men who were found to be homophobic (as measured by the Index of Homophobia) were considerably more likely to experience more erectile responses when exposed to homoerotic images than non-homophobic men.

Too bad he can't marry his lover and bring the man legally to the US. Way to support policies that come back to bite you in the ass, Mayor. - inactive, on 05/21/2009, -6/+80No doubt. But the Republican Party is doing all they can to push those folks out.
- Chooxo, on 05/22/2009, -0/+52See, first you okay male-male relationships, and next they'll want to make out with aliens.
ALIENS, dammit. - nyxerebos, on 05/22/2009, -2/+52@Pwelborn1: Nope, the rural church I was raised to attend pretty much conformed to the stereotypes.
- BBE1965, on 05/22/2009, -5/+51After reading Stu8912's comment and the blog, it seems the mayor is being maligned as "super conservative" by the title of this digg. Of course, sensationalized titles help sell a submission, but in this case it seems the guy is probably not even a declared member of a political party let alone a super conservative. Either way, good for him. He's doing what he needs to find his happiness. It will be interesting as the blog states to see if San Angelo is big enough to welcome him back.
- WasabiBomb, on 05/22/2009, -0/+46That was my first guess, as well. It's sad when reality out-Onions The Onion.
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -2/+42You know how I know you're gay? You ran off to Mexico with your gay lover.
- novenator, on 05/21/2009, -11/+50Well, I have to give him credit for one thing: while most conservatives are masters at hiding the truth about their past or distracting people away from it, at least this guy is taking credit for it. That only makes him half a douchebag.
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -1/+40or the fact that regardless that they're in love, and if he had been a she, then they could get married and his love could legally enter the country. OH SNAP. Irony at it's best.
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -6/+41There are all kinds of conservatives, I'm sure. But the Republican Party acts as if they're all christian heterosexuals who didn't have sex before marriage. The problem with there being "all kinds of conservatives" is that in a party of millions of people, not everybody is going to fit such an unrealistic party line... leading to well, hypocrisy.
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -1/+34so does he support gay marriage then?
- geauxtig3rs, on 05/22/2009, -3/+34I'm trying to find anywhere where he is super conservative. I like the article, but I have to bury it for the headline. Nowhere are his political views espoused, and if you infer that because he was "in the closet" he must have been conservative, that's simply not the case. I've had several liberal friends that have "come out" so to speak and it wasn't because they were homophobic, it was because they would have been maligned and they thought it better at the time for them to leave well enough alone and not make an issue out of it.
I guarantee you, not all gays feel that an over-the-top display of their sexuality is warranted.
EDIT: In addition, I'm a fiscal conservative, and I am for equal marriage protection regardless of sexual orientation. Seems to me that the only issue is his illegal status, and if he is trying to fix the situation he either (A) was unaware of his status OR (B) sincerely loves him and does not want to be separated due to legal process. Since he can't "marry" him in the state of Texas, you can't give him citizen status the easy way. - COINTELPROAgent, on 05/21/2009, -38/+67Surprise! there are all kinds of conservatives. Some that are pro-immigrant too.
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -5/+32Its our right to deny you yours.
/Conservatives. - seanstuart, on 05/22/2009, -6/+32Before jumping on the hypocrisy train, I'd want to know his (previously) stated views on homosexuality/gay marriage. Being a gay Republican does not automatically make you a hypocrite.
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -4/+27LMAO.
Seriously, LMAO. - s0nicfreak, on 05/22/2009, -2/+21Yes, because they have convinced theirselves that they hate homosexuals, and want to prove it.
- Kelto1, on 05/22/2009, -3/+22Once again, LoneRanger, you're the last to get it. It's ironic that he is a gay conservative when gays are usually bad in the eyes of the conservatives. Stating that as a fact doesn't make me bigoted if it's true. And anorexics and bulimics not having the right to vote?? Seriously? That is the most pathetic attempt to demonize the Dems I have ever seen in my entire life. I'm seriously beginning to wonder if you're just trolling to get more and more people to hate conservatives...that or you just generally love being a douche.
- HakonD, on 05/22/2009, -2/+21People are generally very spiteful. It's always easy to point out flaws in someone else. On certain articles it has become so bad that I've stopped reading the comments all together. For example, I do not want to see creationist bashing on an article about evolution (eg. the recent submissions about the new "missing link".) It's simply not relevant, I'd rather see discussion about the actual article.
Rather than criticise this man, why not support him for breaking out of strict social norms in order to be happy? - DivisibleByZero, on 05/22/2009, -7/+25I have to admit, I'm not the expert on San Angelo's local politics, but did this mayor ever say/do anything to indicate homophobia? If not, you're just a bigot for assuming that everyone in Texas is homophobic.
Hell, who even decided he was "super conservative"? His facebook profile lists his affiliation as "non-partisan" - woodsjransom, on 05/22/2009, -9/+26This is why you have so many people holding their noses when reacting to the republican party. This is too funny and another reason why the republican party in such disarray. The story just continues to get stupid. The cow jumped over the moon, the spoon ran away with the fork and the Cheshire cat yadda, yadda, yadda.
- jhaks, on 05/22/2009, -1/+17I don't think the article said anything about him being homophobic or super conservative. I think it was the submitter that put the "super conservative" label into the story.
- SpinningHead, on 05/22/2009, -1/+16You mean the way blacks used to have the right to marry other blacks and whites had the right to marry other whites?
- oldhick, on 05/22/2009, -2/+17Your ignorance is humorous.
- mrfunktastic, on 05/22/2009, -7/+22"Christians are not all stupid, gay-hating, discriminating bigots." Sure, but you claim allegiance to a tribe that votes down gay marriage every chance you can. Get back to us AFTER you guys evolve out of plainly bigoted behavior like that, mmmk?
As long as you wave the symbols of an openly anti-gay collective around, don't be surprised how people tend to sum you up. - inactive, on 05/22/2009, -7/+21... the Republicans are hypocrites because they espouse one policy, and in private live another, as exemplified here. The Democrats don't position themselves as social conservatives, do they? Or perhaps you didn't understand the meaning of the word 'hypocrite'.
- gttim, on 05/22/2009, -1/+15Forbidden love is far sweeter!
"You're sucking a Mexican's dick?! Couldn't you blow a nice white guy?" - Vaiper, on 05/22/2009, -4/+18pssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssh.....really?
Sean Hannity says he is non partisan as well. I guess I should start believing him since everyone tells the truth. - inkubusfan, on 05/22/2009, -0/+13oh right. better he use tiny smart cars to get around, much safer.
and better he take the bus to make 3 or 4 local appearances on earth day.
and using the heater during the winter DEFINITELY means you don't give a ***** about the environment.
*giggle* - Elranzer, on 05/22/2009, -1/+14But... but... but... OBAMA!
- Dubbleyew, on 05/22/2009, -2/+15Pwelborn1 you need to understand many liberal opinions on conservatives. This isn't just a two party bickering contest. What republicans represent these days is the past, and not the good parts about the past. The majority of you are absolutely immovable on certain social issues, like gays marriage, abortion immigrants, not to mention your significant evangelical membership, and don't even get me started on them.
Try to imagine how a liberal sees you guys. We say, gays should be able to marry if they choose. You say, "Never". We say, a woman should be able to get an abortion IF SHE CHOOSES. You say "Never". Are you starting to get the picture here? We say, only use force against our enemies if necessary, you say, "THEY ARE TRYING TO WIPE OUT OUR WHOLE CIVILIZATION, QUICK NUKE THEM, PRE-EMPTIVE STRIKE!!!!!! KIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL.
Your party is ***** psychotic. The left has its problems, most certainly, but conservatives have essentially become the party of say the opposite of what liberals say no matter what it is, even if it means granting more rights to people. THE SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE!! (Even though half of all married people get divorced and there is no religious test to get married.
And on top of all of this, most conservatives are so incredibly stubborn, that they don't even realize how out of touch with the current America they have become.
And then there is your patriotism. You're like a cult chanting "USA!" "USA!". Many of you regard even the slightest comment against america, no matter how justified, as treason or antiamericanism. "Hey if you don't like America, then get out!! Is that how you improve a country? Maintain that everything it does is good? Look at the health care issue!! For a developing country, America has a terrible health care system. You send the message that you don't give a ***** about other people. "Why should I pay for other people's treatment/stupidity/disabilities etc." You just sound like cranky selfish *****. That matters my friend. Look at the people who represent your party at the moment. Look at Bachman, look at Steele, look at LIMBAUGH!! Have you ever just objectively listen to the things they say? They're NUTS!! Look at Coulter!!! These people almost froth at the mouth at times!
All this adds up to a party that is so rife for insults its almost impossible not to. The right needs to soften its image. No single member of any group or party can be said to necvessarily represent the whole, but the above issues, I think it is safe to say, do represent most conservatives.
What I have found is that debate is laregely pointless. Liberals tend to me more open minded, yes they are. Conservatives are too rigid. Especially for today when America is more diverse than ever. You can't just pander to the white christians anymore. - inactive, on 05/22/2009, -2/+15"people with self-destructive mental illnesses should not be judged"
Translation: please stop picking on me - inactive, on 05/22/2009, -1/+13I think he loves getting a douche. But yes, he's a troll.
- gnixon70, on 05/22/2009, -1/+13I failed to see that in the actual article as well. In fact I couldn't find anything that stated what his politics were
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -3/+15How come when there is a Republican scandal it always involves gay male sex?
- asgardshill, on 05/22/2009, -3/+15I cry foul. The mayor might have been a conservative, but he wasn't a super conservative unless he lovingly popped his gay male illegal alien lover's cherry in an airport bathroom.
- UglyBunny, on 05/22/2009, -1/+12Those people that supported him probably supported him for his anti-gay, anti-immigrant platform. Now that he has been exposed to be a total hypocrite they probably wouldn't support him. You're right we shouldn't care about how politicians run their personal lives, but it is hard not to when certain politicians promote policies that tell average citizens how to run their personal lives. Comes across as very, "Do as I say, not as I do."
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -1/+12congrats loneranger!
You just might've had the thinnest argument.
like, ever! - asgardshill, on 05/22/2009, -6/+17Out in the west Texas town of San Angelo
I fell in love with a Mexican guy.
Night time would find me in an airport bathroom;
Music would play and my Lupe I'd ride.
Blacker than night were the eyes of my Lupe,
Wicked and evil while casting a spell.
My love was deep for this Mexican fella;
I was in love but in vain, I could tell.
One night a flaming Senator came in,
Wild as the west Texas wind.
Dashing and daring,
A drink he was sharing
With wicked ol' Lupe,
The guy that I loved.
So in anger I
Challenged his right for the love of my heartthrob.
Down went his pants for his gun that he bore.
My challenge was answered in less than a heart-beat;
Senator Craig, he lay swooned on the floor.
Just for a moment I stood there in silence,
Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done.
Many thoughts raced through my mind as I stood there;
I had but one chance and that was to run.
Out through the back door of Rosa's I ran,
Out where the horses were tied.
I caught a good one.
It looked like it could run.
Up on its back
And away I did ride,
Just as fast as I
Could from the west Texas town of San Angelo
Out to the badlands of old Mexico.
Back in San Angelo my life would be worthless.
Everything's gone in life; nothing is left.
It's been so long since I've seen my dear Lupe
My love is stronger than my fear of death.
I saddled up and away I did go,
Riding alone in the dark.
Maybe tomorrow
Fred Phelps he might find me.
Tonight nothing's worse than this
Pain in my heart.
And at last here I
Am on the hill overlooking San Angelo;
I can see Rosa's cantina below.
My love is strong and it pushes me onward.
Down off the hill to my Lupe I go.
Off to my right I see Limbaugh and Glenn Beck;
Off to my left ride Ann Coulter and more.
Shouting and crying I can't let them catch me.
I have to make it to Lupe's back door.
Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel
A deep burning shame in my side.
Though I am trying
To stay in the saddle,
I'm getting weary,
Unable to ride.
But my love for
My Lupe is strong and I rise where I've fallen,
Though I am weary I can't stop to rest.
I see the Christian conservative movement,
I feel their envy go deep in my chest.
From out of nowhere my Lupe has found me,
Kissing my cheek as he kneels by my side.
Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for,
One little kiss and my Lupe, good-bye. - SpinningHead, on 05/22/2009, -2/+13The problem is liberals would allow him to marry his partner, while his own party would deny him the same transfer of property rights and hospital visitation rights the rest of us married people enjoy.
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -0/+10The have these national border things.
- HakonD, on 05/22/2009, -1/+11^ Exactly what do you know about the policies of this mayor? Did you even read the article? It has already been established that he was never "super conservative". This story is about one mayor in a small Texas town. Please take your partisan ***** to a discussion where it belongs.
