- Echota, on 04/26/2009, -0/+19Thanks for this books! Some of the photos are heart breaking, especially the little five year old child.
The one of President Obama in the rain says so much! Wish I had a copy of that one. - freedomjoe, on 04/27/2009, -1/+19"garbage"? Is that what you call it when you stalk someone just so you can digg down everything they say or submit on Digg?
It's just sad that you are this angry and have nothing better to do with your time. - woodsjransom, on 04/27/2009, -0/+13No it has a secret thing for Books I think. This is one sic little "thang" hit that "block user" under its worthless handle. I just did. Sometimes negative attention is better than none at all. It makes them feel that they are with the living. Check out its poor profile, sounds ill. Digg will take care of it soon enough.
- SavardAlex, on 04/26/2009, -0/+12I dunno i went around in the galleries and some of the stuff is actually epic.
Check out the album American Youth... at least if your in that demographic - kylemech, on 04/27/2009, -1/+11What the...

People still use bow and arrow to fight wars?! - asgardshill, on 04/27/2009, -0/+10They cut off your clitoris.
- FarOutGrace, on 04/26/2009, -0/+9Amazing, but sad too. Great photos.
- keithnoir, on 04/27/2009, -0/+8The thing that makes some of these photos so powerful is not only the content in the images, but the ability to even capture them. Sometimes i'm sure these images are burned into the photographers heads...
- greenfyre, on 04/27/2009, -0/+8What is your problem? Didn't get what you wanted for your 5th birthday?
- woodsjransom, on 04/27/2009, -1/+8Stunning is putting it mildly. I passed this on to my email bud list. As usual Books, you never disappoint kiddo. Keep 'em coming!!!
- freedomjoe, on 04/27/2009, -1/+8Great submission, books! Thank you!
- jamspt, on 04/27/2009, -0/+6The expression in the man's face who is being held down by a boot is frighteningly animalistic.
Impressive picture to say the least. - inactive, on 04/27/2009, -1/+7Sorry I asked...
- Rain12913, on 04/27/2009, -0/+5and/or labia.
- Rain12913, on 04/27/2009, -0/+5Female Circumcision is not an Islamic tradition, but one that originated in Africa, where it is most commonly practiced. It may have been adopted by practitioners of Islam due to the overlap of Islamic culture with African tribal tradition in certain areas of Africa.
- norman619, on 04/27/2009, -0/+5The Obama photos seem out of place with the others. I feel those whould be put with other good political photos. The femail circumcision phots were surreal to me. How can anyone mutilate a child like that? I kept thinking of my little girl.
- psy333che, on 04/27/2009, -0/+4Love the photos .. They say more then a 1000 words could ever say
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -1/+5Explain a female circumcision to me please.
- asgardshill, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3Number 17 was stunning. They're so casually dressed. They could be any crowd in London or Cleveland at a ball game or at the mall, except for the trying to kill each other part of course.
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3"Modern" just means its done in a more sanitary environment, its still a brutal ritual.
Yet another reason to avoid religion like the plague. - norman619, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3In parts of Africa yes.
- patburke1980, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3Female circumcision? That sounds terribly unnecessary and cruel.
- swicepick, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2The photos of the young girls in Indonesia sent chills down my spine. So did the ones of the children and families after the hurricane. A truly moving set of photos.
- norman619, on 04/27/2009, -1/+3You missed the female circumcision photos. Those people were not black.
- ShiftyBizniss, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2change your username, *****
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2I thought female genital mutilation was only being practiced in Africa, not in 'modern' muslim countries like Indonesia.
- cmuska902, on 04/27/2009, -0/+1No I saw them. But still...of all the events in the world, all the amazing photos, the earthquake in Italy, etc...there is only 2 images of non-black people. Not a complaint just an observation.
- rodley, on 04/27/2009, -0/+1A stark reminder of whats going on in this world around us. We, Americans, can be far too heliocentric to know this suffering is a reality. Thank you Books for pointing us to this wonderful photographer-an artist who captures life as it happens.
- anexanhume, on 04/27/2009, -1/+2Yeah, it's a nasty tradition in some cultures (Islam is the main one AFAIK) where they remove the parts that give the female pleasure during intercourse to ensure she will stay faithful to her husband.
- norman619, on 04/27/2009, -0/+1More people here in the US should travel the world and witness these things for themselves. Maybe then they will appreciate what we have here more than they do. I spent a few years in Russia. When I came back I looked at the US with new and greatful eyes.
- cmuska902, on 04/27/2009, -1/+2Why were all of these of black people? That wasn't in the title, but it took me by surprise that ALL of the best photos of photojournalism were either in Africa, or of Barack Obama. Did I miss something?
- stayathomejobs, on 04/27/2009, -0/+1Amazing what these folks go through to get such fascinating shots ...
- rodley, on 04/27/2009, -0/+1Ditto with my time in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. I came back with different eyes, myself.
- deathcapt, on 04/27/2009, -1/+2Is it like a rule of war they have or something like in Gangs of New York? They schedule fights, and they're only allowed to bring event sanctioned weapons? Are they too poor to afford guns and bullets? What about some Body armor? If that was their tactical formation, I think a couple AKs would clear the field of tangos pretty quick.
- sanguinekane, on 04/28/2009, -0/+1Right, because its up to every photojournalist to personally step in and fix things themselves every time they see something bad! *****.
A journalist's job is to observe and report, not interfere or go on a one-person crusade to fix the world. As much as it is wrong (and I do fully believe that it is an abhorrent, disgusting, unnecessary and cruel practice that should be abolished), one photojournalist is not going to rid the world of female circumcision by himself. It is a socially accepted and encouraged practice in many countries, and this journalist is already doing more by observing and reporting about it. The same goes for the conflicts in Africa, the disaster in Haiti, any of it. There are people trained to give aid to victims, there are soldiers trained to fight wars. Journalists are trained to tell the world about these events, not to take part in them. - Aaronthethird, on 04/27/2009, -0/+1Those are some amazing photos. Truly amazing
- cmuska902, on 04/27/2009, -1/+1No I saw them. But still...of all the events in the world, all the amazing photos, the earthquake in Italy, etc...there is only 2 images of non-black people. Not a complaint just an observation.
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -1/+1Gary Coleman just lit my house on fire!!
- xsecretfiles, on 04/27/2009, -1/+1Why are these photographers getting rewarded??
And when these beating and castrations were happening did they just stood there and watch???
It's sad and sick :( - phantasmagorica, on 04/27/2009, -0/+0I was going to comment the same thing. Wish there were more to see.
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -0/+0Disturbing yet amazing photos. I guess I have it good.. I guess.
- Scottypants, on 04/27/2009, -2/+1ORLY?
- Zoshchenko, on 04/27/2009, -2/+1What a sad, sick world we live in.
- mattfsu, on 04/27/2009, -1/+0Number 7 kills me to look at.
- CoD4, on 04/27/2009, -4/+2I really like the one that's stunning
- orangsalju, on 04/27/2009, -3/+0In Indonesia, when female circumcision is done, it's usually just symbolic, a washing or a scratch at most, sometimes a very small amount of blood is drawn. It's not genital mutilation.
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -7/+0What do urine samples and Canadian beer have in common?
The taste.
