- ileftfark, on 02/03/2009, -0/+36If anyone read it, the conclusion of the article is that we should still racially profile, but give it less weight to broaden the scope of perceived risks.
- mu0p, on 02/03/2009, -7/+34But then what are bored racists supposed to do at work all day? :(
- phase64, on 02/03/2009, -4/+25Awesome! Once they implement this, I can grow my beard back and not be afraid of speaking arabic at an airport!
WOO! - publiclurker, on 02/03/2009, -3/+21I'm surprised it's not less effective. Since the people in question are trying not to get caught, they would be trying to avoid the deliberate profiling parameters.
- trevorjez, on 02/03/2009, -1/+17Read an article on Digg? That's crazy talk. The headline tells me everything I need to know.
- Falldog, on 02/03/2009, -7/+22Racial profiling when it comes to random security checks isn't a bad thing. When you have the majority of suspected terrorists being of Arab decent it makes sense to focus on those than some white grandma. Despite this those who get categorized shouldn't have their rights violated or put through any undo process. Unfortunately people in charge (especially the TSA) aren't likely to be so reasonable.
If someone who looks like becomes a murder and is out on the run, and the police come upon me, I'm not going to cry foul as long as they treat me with respect and matters are cleared up quickly. - harrisbradley, on 02/03/2009, -3/+15Whatever... I still don't trust those damn Irish!
- LittleDas, on 02/03/2009, -0/+10Do you believe that a system can be created that will simultaneously assume a group of people are terrorists and treat them with respect?
- dekuscrub, on 02/03/2009, -2/+12The terrorists must be laughing their asses off watching us pull aside little old ladies at the airport just to pretend like we're not profiling.
- zslice, on 02/03/2009, -0/+8The point is that when you make it so that all grannies are never checked, some terrorist will find a granny to do the job.
- Sparkster185, on 02/03/2009, -0/+8Pretty sure a white guy dressed in jeans and a t-shirt with dynamite strapped to him wouldn't get past security.
- Gloony, on 02/03/2009, -1/+9If by common sense you mean xenophobia.
- ZenMojo, on 02/04/2009, -0/+7I'm a black kid from Texas. I'm more afraid of a group of white people coming up behind me in the middle of the night than black people.
- maliath, on 02/03/2009, -1/+8No dogs, no Irish.
/s - inactive, on 02/03/2009, -1/+7Not everyone in America is a racist. Not our fault the media portrays us that way.
- crapolatime, on 02/03/2009, -2/+8Random screen, still as illegal as Profiling.
No evidence of crime? Then don't harass innocent people. - presidentraygun, on 02/03/2009, -1/+6There's always being frighten of people different from yourself. I'd say that takes up most of their day.
- sfasu77, on 02/03/2009, -0/+5What country are you from? America has a far better record assimilating immigrants than any European state. Yea there's racism here, but it pales in comparison to most of the world.
- FLarsen, on 02/03/2009, -0/+5What kind of mind is easily amazed then? Cause that's what amPMAn89 was. He never mentioned amusement.
- SmartButLazy, on 02/03/2009, -2/+7So we should keep checking granny...she's bound to attempt a terrorist attack.
- inactive, on 02/03/2009, -0/+4Well, I'd say most terrorists are MUSLIMS. Some of which are Arab and some are not.
BTW, some Arabs are Christian. Some Arabs are Jews. - ZenMojo, on 02/04/2009, -0/+4My favorite are those idiots who want to profile Arabs as Muslim terrorists even though only 20% of Muslims are Arab.

- PrintScrn12, on 02/04/2009, -0/+3Statistics is rigorous. You aren't and are most likely irrational (like most people and unlike statistics).
- EtherGnat, on 02/03/2009, -2/+6Most terrorist attacks that I can think of on US soil have been carried out by white guys.
/just sayin' - PrintScrn12, on 02/04/2009, -0/+3It isn't launching penii. You'll note I used the correct plural form of penis. Additionally don't forget to capitalise the first word of a sentence. </nitpicking>

^^^BERRIED^^^^ - inactive, on 02/03/2009, -2/+5Fist yourself.
- opticwind, on 02/04/2009, -0/+3Yeah "science". Stop thinking with your head and think with your gut. And my gut tells me this guy is right.
- manogamez, on 02/04/2009, -0/+3Well in this case you think rationally and come to the conclusion that neither the 12 year boy nor the grandmother are capable of commiting the crime. In other words your example has nothing to do with race.
A better example would be
"I have time to search only 1 suspect, but I'm presented with 3 people. A white dude, a black dude, and an Arab dude. History and common scene and a gutfeeling tell me to search the Saudi. But in america you cant do that, you have to be "fair," to every one..."
If you chose your suspect based purely on race then your history, common sense, and gutfeeling are all VERY clouded by racism. - fuse13, on 02/04/2009, -0/+3lol i bet you spend a lot of time accusing liberals of always thinking with their feelings or something. well these are hard numbers, bitch. your gut instinct is demonstrably wrong. maybe some conservatives should stop thinking with their feelings and try to live in reality.
- opticwind, on 02/04/2009, -0/+3Really, I'm getting that alarm too.
- CabesMojo, on 02/03/2009, -1/+4I've been stopped for crimes I had nothing to do with several times because the guy who did it looked similar to me, hell in one case I got stopped several times for the same crime, and the officers were despite the intense situation were very respectful. I wasn't angry at all with the police for it, they were just trying to do their job.
Of course I've also had the exact opposite occur. I think it boils down more to the individual than the process. - onestrawplz, on 02/04/2009, -3/+6No, the reason you see more black people or people of Hispanic descent in prisons is because of our ***** up legal system. A minority man is much more likely than a white man to actually be convicted, even when they are on trial for the same crime. This has to do with the disproportionate number of minorities who can't afford decent lawyers like their wealthier white counterparts, and hidden racism in the legal system. It has nothing to do with the fact that someone is black/Hispanic/white, and has everything to do with the fact that minorities tend to be in a lower socioeconomic class.
- kcp12304, on 02/04/2009, -1/+4and now Israeli is the most safe and freedom loving county in the world...all their problems are now solved!
- kcp12304, on 02/04/2009, -1/+4Your metaphor is flawed because there are white criminals believe it or not. If you're being followed by a creepy white guy in a dark street, would you then feel comfortable because the guy's not black. I'd be ***** my pants if I was in that situation...the color of the guy's skin is irrelevant.
Oh and religious people have a certain kind of crazy among them (i.e abortion clinic bombers)
Common sense can be irrational because its not common sense...its fear. - 48snickers, on 02/03/2009, -1/+4This research seems inline with prior research at MIT a few years ago:
http://tech.mit.edu/V122/N48/48secure.48n.html (summary for the lazy)
http://groups.csail.mit.edu/mac/classes/6.805/stud ... (the paper)
Aside from concluding that racial profiling simply doesn't work in theory, it also discusses how the 9/11 hijackers took specific advantage of this statistical failure (see "case study 1999") to show it doesn't work in practice. - dsfjvhbd, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2OK it is in the ars technica title too, but I still don't know why.
- shadywasabi, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2A group of MIT students wrote a paper on profiling and why it doesn't work. You can find it here:
http://digg.com/security/Why_Profiling_is_Always_W ...
Profiling is hands down less reliable than random searches. Since it's possible to know whether you've been flagged by a profiling system, it's possible to discover what will and will not be flagged by that profiling system through enough testing.
Given a random search system, there is always a fixed chance that you will get flagged for heightened scrutiny, whereas with a profiling system, once you have discovered the profile, you can beat it 100% of the time.
Some would argue that a hybrid system is the best option, but all that does is divert resources to an option that can be beaten 100% of the time, thereby reducing the efficacy of the overall system. - PrintScrn12, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2Common sense is just accumulated prejudices.
- manogamez, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2"certain ethnic groups have been more likely to fly planes into buildings"
A correlation, one point does not make. - dsfjvhbd, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2He doesn't talk about "racial" profiling, he talks about *any* profiling and proved it ineffective.
I have no idea, why the word "racial" is in the Digg title. - dsfjvhbd, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2It gets even worse, if you have a strongly organized terrorist group, which, for one reason or another (or by logical thinking) knows what you are looking for. Then you end up screening harmless citizens only
- Gloony, on 02/03/2009, -1/+3Michael Jackson!?
- dselliott, on 02/03/2009, -1/+3The true reason for racial profiling remains unstated... yet anyone with an iota of sense knows what it is.
- Nodnarb74, on 02/03/2009, -0/+2If you believe in radical Muslims as the source of all terrorism this story makes absolutely no sense. Racial profiling would have to be more accurate
- themadrammer, on 08/18/2009, -0/+2"We should be screening the Muslims of those nationalities - including Americas, I'm horribly sad to say. Al-Qaeda has been recruiting Somalia immigrants for their cause."
So what exactly has Racial Profiling found since 9/11? Not even one criminal convicted of a crime. At the same time, its alienated most of the Non-White world due to its aggresive methods at airports in the US. - fuse13, on 02/04/2009, -1/+3Yeah I am sure the guys who figured out how to destroy the WTC with boxcutters couldnt possibly figure out how to use obvious racial profiling to their advantage.
- manogamez, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2They hate America, so they MUST BE STOPPED!
Dude you should just listen to yourself speak. -
