- muxaulo, on 07/08/2009, -4/+85They could package up marijuana cigarettes to make a few more dollars.
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -2/+51I just quit smoking this week, 3 days without a single cigarette. I was a smoker for 2 years and quit cold-turkey. 6 USD a pack? Screw that. I'm done.
- algaeturd, on 07/09/2009, -2/+50People seriously ***** themselves good and proper when they get the chance. Basically, here's what will happen:
The majority of smokers are lower and middle classes. As the recession rages on, these people will quit because they can no longer afford it at all. It's a fact that if you don't have money for cigarettes or if they get to a ridiculous price, people will quit.
After that tax money dries up because the percentage of smokers is down drastically, they will look to other things to tax the ***** out of. I predict a lot of fast food taxes at the very least but they'll be coming for something you choose to enjoy next. Beer, liquor...whatever.
Then all those idiots who are cheering these taxes because 'I don't smoke...blah, blah, blah...it kills you, they deserve to pay high prices for it..." will shut the ***** up when they start taxing the ***** out of something they choose to enjoy.
See how that works? It's not about the actual act of smoking...it's about having the freedom to do what you want with your body, your time, etc. Quit cheering on and encouraging these dumb ***** who try to create new taxes out of thin air. - inactive, on 07/08/2009, -4/+46Legalize weed and there can be another even greater source of income.
- yocouchdigga, on 07/08/2009, -4/+43Quit smoking cigarettes, they'll legalize marijuana across the country. I ***** guarantee it.
- scooterbaga, on 07/08/2009, -4/+41You'll be back! Mwa ha ha ha!
...Seriously though, best of luck. - mst3kcrow, on 07/10/2009, -1/+37Sin taxes....because cutting expenditures and balancing the budget is just too tough.
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -3/+38But I thought the high cigarette taxes were to keep people from smoking, because smoking is baaaad for you. Now that it's "working," the state governments are in a panic? Hm. Curious.
- pbd1637, on 07/09/2009, -2/+27If there is not a black market now, there soon will be. Just like alcohol in the 20's.
Hello Mr. Capone. - Zippo, on 07/08/2009, -1/+21If you don't like prices in the US, don't try and buy cigarettes in Canada. Last I checked, a pack of smokes where Iive is between $9-12. Over the course of the five years I worked in retail, cigarette packs rose in price by over $4.
Thank god I don't, and never have, smoke. - ifruit, on 07/10/2009, -0/+19A carton of Marlboro was $6.00 in Iraq. A CARTON
- theNazz, on 07/09/2009, -1/+18Let's go after alcohol too... if we're going for a 'sin tax' bonanza, they might as well rape the drinkers. In this ***** state of the union, drinking is WAY up. Oooh that would up the cost of the politicians three drink lunches...
- shig, on 07/08/2009, -2/+18You never know what to expect from those viper pits. A state legislature is like cornering a wounded animal when the funds start drying up; They'll irrationally attack anything within range. They could prohibit cigarette possession and consumption so they can conceivably recoup their budget deficits using asset forfeiture seizure laws like they do with other illicit substances.
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -1/+17Dude, most of those two years was at least a pack a day. That's 14600 cigarettes. I don't think it's quite as trivial as you make it out to be.
- dtr300, on 07/08/2009, -2/+18I paid $2.35 a pack yesterday. Think it's black market? I'm not asking!
- Deausx, on 07/10/2009, -2/+17This is one way democracy fails. The majority, non-smokers, penalizes the minority, smokers. Its OK to hate smokers because we've been ***** on them, or allowing them to be ***** on for so long. First you cant smoke in government buildings. Then you cant smoke in airports. Then you cant have a smoking section in your restaurant. You cant even smoke in a ***** pool hall or bar in some places. The whole time the price of cigs is going up up up.
Do you realize a pack a day at $6 a pack is $180 a month? THATS A ***** CAR PAYMENT.
This is ***** of the highest order. - rebrad, on 07/10/2009, -1/+16I buy all my cigarettes at the local truck stop. At $10 a carton no one asks where they come from but it sure beats the state price.
- theberlindoctor, on 07/08/2009, -2/+16Is this even legal? Can I grow my own tobacco plants?
- BaseballGuyCAA, on 07/09/2009, -3/+16Meanwhile, several million smokers are unable to support their governments, because their governments irrationally fear the plant they prefer to smoke.
- biogears, on 07/10/2009, -2/+14We should have expected this as the top comment.
- biogears, on 07/10/2009, -0/+12Crazy, our brilliant government is attempting to put themselves in a position of needing smokers.
- DankBuddz, on 07/10/2009, -0/+11Judging by the tax hikes on nicotine, can you imagine how hard the government will tax marijuana?
It should definitely be legalized, but I'll just end up growing anyway. - smmakira, on 07/10/2009, -5/+16I'm a smoker leave me alone. I can't smoke anywhere public anymore anyway. What's your ***** problem?
- ShempRider, on 07/10/2009, -0/+11Thanks to the last round of tax increases, I quit. Plus, my doctor wanted me to. He's such a dick.
- biogears, on 07/10/2009, -2/+11We should have expected this as the 2nd comment
- algaeturd, on 07/09/2009, -8/+17TWO FULL YEARS!???
You must have the willpower of a magic Cheetah!
Seriously, dude. At two years, you're not even considered a real smoker. I'm glad you quit and all but don't pat yourself on the back too hard. That's like giving up golfing at the 2 year mark. - biogears, on 07/10/2009, -0/+9Yeah, this is really brain dead reasoning. Typical of our Gov these days. They want to setup a system which relies on smokers to fund, then on the other hand scream about the ill effects of smoking. And another example of static analysis. This is the voters fault at the core.
- keysmachine, on 07/10/2009, -0/+9first talks of wanting to look towards legalizing marijuana now they're looking towards cigarettes. pretty soon we're gonna see headlines such as
"States look to god for help against debt relief" - OuijaCat, on 07/10/2009, -0/+9Hydroponic tobacco & secret grow-rooms are the future!
- EVILTHETURTLE, on 07/09/2009, -2/+11Well neither is alcohol.
- scoottie, on 07/10/2009, -0/+8States look at cigarette tax to increase spending so that they dont have to be fiscally reponsible.
- MWeather, on 07/10/2009, -2/+10Well you're dumb, and talk like a fag.
- babalonanon, on 07/09/2009, -1/+9Yeah. Good luck. First 3 days is hardest.
- MWeather, on 07/10/2009, -0/+8I remember my first 14600 cigarettes. God that was a long time ago.
- Import98, on 07/10/2009, -1/+9Keep attacking people for taking part in something that is completely legal. Yet on the other end drunks can get their alcohol with a rare increase. *****.
***** legalize marijuana already, having it illegal does nothing but waste money on a war that cannot and will not ever be won. It only takes a seed and soil and a plant is grown. How are you going to stop that? Dumb ass politicians and government. - BroBillRogers, on 07/09/2009, -0/+7Taxes are about raising money for government to spend to impress voters to vote for them in the next election. 'Nuff sed.
- mrpunman, on 07/10/2009, -1/+8***** you ssaya. People like us pay taxes everyday with our ciggies. That's road pavement, school and hospital for you dickwat.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -2/+9I thought the government was supposed to be your servant, not your master. Those "politicians" are nothing more than organized crime as far as I'm concerned. Taxation is theft.
- DankBuddz, on 07/10/2009, -0/+7I have a serious problem with the government taxing the ***** out of something because its deemed unhealthy, and I don't even smoke cigarettes anymore.
- SystemicThought, on 07/10/2009, -0/+7Tim "No New Taxes P.S. I Have A Huge Deficit" Pawlenty, the unfaithful governor of Minnesota, raised taxes on cigarettes, calling it a "health impact fee" a few years back. They made him say it was really a tax, or he'd have to fork the money over to the tobacco companies, since the result of the huge tobacco settlement said that there couldn't be any more health related suits or fees on behalf of the states.
God I hate him. - Cockslap, on 07/10/2009, -1/+7You can do it, I smoked for 10 years and quit a few years ago..... Get past the first month or so and its cake.
P.S.- steer clear of friends who smoke for the first 30 days. - inactive, on 07/10/2009, -0/+6increased cigarette tax will push more people to cheaper sources...like friends and family in other states or to alternative markets!
The states need to trim spending....it is like trying to fill a bathtub but keeping the drain unplugged! - SpykerSpeed, on 07/10/2009, -1/+7GTFO of my life, government.
The government is like a cruel parent that takes advantage of their children, then when the children grow up and leave they suddenly discover they aren't capable of taking care of themselves. - dtr300, on 07/09/2009, -1/+7Mexico. And you can get prescription drugs cheap while you're there.
- Flynnz, on 07/10/2009, -0/+6hate to say it, but at 2 years I was able to stop for months at a time (also at least a pack a day). Now? it would be pretty damn hard. I had to stop for 3 days after getting a wisdom tooth pulled recently.....I lasted 2.5 days.
Not saying it was easy for you...addiction is different for everyone. But trust me it would have only gotten harder had you not decided to stop when you did....so my hat is off to you sir. - dtr300, on 07/09/2009, -1/+7Congratulations! My quit date is next month.
- MWeather, on 07/10/2009, -1/+6Right now, laying off a bunch of state and federal workers isn't exactly the most unpopular proposition.
- DankBuddz, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5Hah, my dad practically said the same thing.
- DankBuddz, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5The only way it'll happen is from the grass roots up.
Pressure your state politicians. Sooner or later the Feds are going to have to respect states rights. Especially with the ***** going on in California. - meed, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5What the hell are the states going to do after people stop smoking, start growing their own, or buying black market cigarettes?
